McCain on financial bailout: ‘Just like Iraq, I’m not afraid to go it alone.’

new.jpgToday, the Washington Post reveals more details about what happened during the White House meeting on Thursday between President Bush and top lawmakers. Despite indicating that his presence was pivotal in Washington for these bailout negotiations, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) said almost nothing during the meeting with Bush:

Bush turned to McCain, who joked, “The longer I am around here, the more I respect seniority.” McCain then turned to Boehner and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) to speak first.

Boehner was blunt. The plan Paulson laid out would not win the support of the vast majority of House Republicans. It had been improved on the edges, with an oversight board and caps on the compensation of participating executives. But it had to be changed at the core. He did not mention the insurance alternative, but Democrats did. Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.), chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, pressed Boehner hard, asking him if he really intended to scrap the deal and start again.

No, Boehner replied, he just wanted his members to have a voice. Obama then jumped in to turn the question on his rival: “What do you think of the [insurance] plan, John?” he asked repeatedly. McCain did not answer.

McCain reportedly told his Senate colleages: “Just like Iraq, I’m not afraid to go it alone if I need to.”

Update When asked by the Washington Post whether McCain "will be able to spin the idea that he swooped in and saved the bailout bill," House Financial Services Committee Chairman Barney Frank (D-MA) replied:
It depends on whether you guys get fooled or not and write that [bleep]. ... Before McCain came in, we thought we were working. McCain comes in, it gets screwed up, now McCain leaves -- I dunno, it's like Jimmy Piersall.

What a goddamn grandstanding phony McDepends truly is ………….

He isn’t even qualified to balance his own family’s check-book , which is pretty substantial in relative terms , but pales in comparison to the entire US economy.

Someone should slap him upside his dilapidated skull…….

Pugilistic Little Johnny McNumbNuts was trying to play “rope-a-dope”. Should be easy for him since he is just basically road-kill.

I spoke with a friend who is very “inside baseball” where Congress is concerned and deals with representatives and senators on almost a daily basis. He confirmed what I have always thought. McNumbNuts has only two friends in Washington — Graham and Lieberman. The rest of the bunch detest him because he is profane, dismissive, condescending and insulting (as long as there are no cameras or journalists around).

We don’t need four more years of that, either.

  10. Wayne A. Schneider says:

After admitting repeatedly and publicly that he does not understand economics (demonstrating it, too), why would anyone expect McCain to have an opinion on Paulson’s plan, much less read it?

  11. Badmoodman says:

And I’ll bet McCain never ONCE even looked at Obama. Insecure little prig.

Is silence still golden? Or maybe that reference in the debate about McDepends asking if Obama wondered if he thought he hadn’t heard him was a reference to the meeting?

Chris Matthews (yes, Tweety) repeatedly made the point that McCain never once looked at Obama during the debate, even though, ostensibly, the format wasto be interactive.

The information above seems to confirm that McCain hates Obama so intensely that he doesn’t have the decency to respond to him.

    Or he’s just stupid.

Either way, McCain is one sick bastard. His behavior has been so erratic he’s so hot-tempered that there’s no way in hell he should become the President.

Johnny McBombIran suggested last night that a “spending freeze” is in order , save military funding , Vet’s issues , and entitlement programs ; how about a spending freeze on you moronic politicians until you all start doing a semi-credible job representing your constituents like you’re supposed to , instead of your own personal interest(s) ………?

Now, now, you know you can only bring up history if it contains the letters P.O. and W.

Otherwise, as McCain tried to point out last night in ignoring his rush to attack Iraq, history is irrelevant.

  29. impeachcheneythenbush says:

I honestly think McCain wouldn’t look at Obama because he was trying to control his temper. Even then, he almost lost it toward the end. Two other things (among many) that struck me was his almost obsessive focus on Iraq, but he also tied it into Vietnam….the war I think he’s still fighting in his own mind. I found it very strange. Of course, we knew he would, at some point, bring up the POW meme, but it’s not true that they were ALL brought back, and there’s plenty of stories around about his classified information, as well as old videos of the hearings and other testimony at the time.

  30. Bad Eye says:

So McCain suspends his campaign, and the very next morning one of his ads runs on the local CBS station.

Next, McCain swoops into Washington on a white horse to give the impression that he, and only he, can save the bailout deal.

And then J. Mc. suggests that instead he’s going to bail on the debate.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Miss Katie gives Sweet Sarah the chance to clarify on national TV the “I’m neighbors with Russia so I have foreign policy experience” fiasco, but instead confirms that indeed Alaska and Russia are geographically located next to one another.

Folks, it just don’t get any better than this.

  31. flyer66 says:

The comparison of McSwine to Jimmy Piersall is interesting. Piersall was a 1950s and 60s baseball player. He was “crazy”(hospitalized as mentally ill) and not a team player. He is most famous for running around the bases backwards. Crazy, not a team player and running backwards – that seems to sum up McSwine pretty well.

I’m not sure that McCain hates Obama. I think its more that he is scared of him and jealous of his popularity. He sure did come off as a condescending jerk last night. I couldn’t even watch the whole debate. I turned it off in the middle of the foreign policy part. I wanted to jump through the TV and slap that smirk off his face.

i agree. terribly insecure, and so, contemptuous…

i had to switch to bill maher at 10… had enough b.s. for a while… turned back to rachel for the late-latest, then out…

it’s weird, what should be elation for the rising status of obama, is more of a queezy, how-bad-will-it-be? feeling…

i can’t say any more, can’t put the words down…

  42. COProgressive says:

“Just like Iraq, I’m not afraid to going it alone.”

So John, I here you’re a real Maverick, is that so?

SEN. McCAIN: No. No. The fact is that I have agreed with President Bush far more than I have disagreed. And on the transcendent issues, the most important issues of our day, I’ve been totally in agreement and support of President Bush

  43. Anacher Forester says:

If “by going it alone” he’s inferring he’ll let others do all the heavy lifting (and take credit for it), then by all means McCain is “going it alone.”
