McCain admits health plan increases taxes.

Today, during an interview on ABC’s This Week, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) finally admitted that his health care tax credits would not cover the costs of a comprehensive health insurance plan:

Actually, my position is that it will be, it will give people actually more money to go out and purchase tax - health insurance on their own and only those with the Cadillac gold-plated health insurance policies today are the ones who might suffer from it.

Watch it:

Ironically, McCain’s health care plan raises taxes for families whose yearly income just barely covers the cost of a Cadillac. The Wonk Room has a detailed explanation here.

Wake up, Rip van McCain! Lower benefits and increased premium sharing is a twenty year trend in America.

Quit passing around that tired old Al Hubbard line about “gold plated insurance”. Only CEO’s have it, and maybe a few retirees.

Oh yeah, and your bait & switch on tax credits? I see through the huge dump onto the employee. Employers will shed that pesky benefit like a used condom, should the McCain Health Care Pain pass. (And I don’t mean plan, McCain’s initiative will cause widespread pain.)

This is a legitimate "catch" and concern, but nowhere near as problematic as he recent statements that he plans on doing the same for healthcare what deregulation has done for the financial sector.

He made this proclamation even when it was clear a trillion-dollar taxpayer bailout was going to be needed.

This is one of three boosts to CEO pay in a McCain administration.

    1) Tranfer the cost of health insurance to the employee (since they get the tax credit)

    2) Corporate tax cut

    3) Financial firms get the benefit of the $700 billion bailout. Offloading their junk should improve profits, and thus, CEO pay.

I'm certain the plan gives pittance and one is expected to purchase healthcare that currently has outrageous premiums and limited coverage.

Got a question for ya, Johnny Mac:

Will the "Cadillac" health care benefits provided to government employees also be subject to this new program?

I am quite familiar with these elite benefit plans, and I know that the government uses their bulk-buying power to negotiate highly discounted rates with providers of care.

If the government plans were in the "private" sector, family coverage would exceed $1,000/month in premiums, and would probably be closer to $1,200/month.

So these government employee's families would be paying at least $12,000 for benefits annually, then receive a $5,000 tax credit? Do I have that right, McStain?

And, just like Big Oil, watch the for-profit health plans inflate premiums to account for the rebate.

Yes, in the eyes of those opposed to it, it interferes in the worship of the god, Profit. Both the health insurance and pharmaceutical industries are strongly opposed to it...just as they wrote the Medicare Part D bill to benefit themselves and that unholy god. But the spin of course is: it's socialized medicine (well, yes...and so what's wrong with that?). Also...do you want the government to chose your doctor and determine your care (vs. the number crunchers in the group and private insurance companies)? The pharmaceutical companies will tell us that it will destroy research and innovation. No...but it WILL destroy the profit motive. Medicine has devolved into protecting the shareholders and fat cats of upper management in those organizations, not the health and welfare of the American people. And those who claim that "competition" will improve care and reduce costs have been saying that for 30 years or more, and it does, in fact, accomplish the opposite. I spent the majority of my working career in both the healthcare and pharma industries, and saw many of these problems as they evolved and grew.

  23. spencers mom Says:

You know, it's interesting how history changes one's perspective.

When Universal Healthcare, called Socialized Medicine, was floated in the early 1980's, the physicians were the ones who balked the most. They looked at how physicians were paid in countries with a nationalized program, and saw how it impacted their bottom lines.

Then came the HMOs. Many of the first HMOs were financed and owned by physicians. They saw this as a way to keep premiums affordable, and keep the profits for themselves rather than the insurance industry.

Then the insurance giants bought out these homegrown HMOs, the handful of physician owners got rich, and suddenly everything changed.

"Medical Management" was implemented... preauthorization for services. Then along came the contract negotiators. In small and medium sized communities, these negotiators were successful in closing down hospitals and physician coalitions who wouldn't drop their fees to the $.30 - $.35 on the dollar.

As providers of care evaporated, those who still played with Big Insurance were held captive. They either agreed with the rates offered, or they closed their practices.

Yes, it is time for a single-payor, national health care system. Listening to Obama mention how Big Ins. is profiting by $15 billion/year to "manage" Medicare plans, he's indicating that the days of Big Insurance are nearing an end.

    Good riddance to bad players.

Will someone please tell me what’s wrong with single-payer Universal Comprehensive Healthcare?

After all it would be cheaper than the current scam perpetrated by the “Pirate Sector” .

The problem is the corporate health care insurance industry would go broke. No more profits/bonuses for the CEO's.

The way I understand it is if we went single payer, ex: medicare for all the payer pool would be huge therefore cutting the cost of premiums and the cost of over head as private insurance take in 20 to 30 % profit while medicare over head is only 3%. Also unlike the private insurance industry, those with pre existing conditions or acquire an illness needing expensive tX would not be rejected or dropped resulting in death.

With medicare, the average person pays around $100 per month plus another $50 to $100 more for the premium plans. I would think with a larger payer pool these numbers would go down. And folks would not be forced into bankruptcy or financial ruin as medicare would cover all costs.

With the private plans a family pays $1000+ a month, that is if they can get the insurance as pre existing conditions are weeded out. Also, even with these plans, many are forced into bankruptcy or financial ruin.

Single payer IS the only way to go, but we have to get through the big money corporatist and hate America radio who convince and lie to the people that single payer health care is government run health care, (not what it is: government run health insurance).... therefore the health care quality would be cut drastically.

So if you go out and get a real cheap plan; you would have to hope that you never get ill because the deductible would put you in the poor house and filing bankrupcy before you even leave the hospital.

Obama has beaten all the other democrats in the primary race.
Obama has beaten McCain on substance at every turn.
Obama draws record crowds; McCain was moribund before he took Palin.
Palin has been found to be more an albatross than an aid, putting her own credibility as well as McCain's judgment into question. However, she has created $$ for the media industry.

If, however, the media should report that Obama is winning (despite the percentage of racists) the contest would be less interesting, less viewers/readers and less revenue.
So, they keep the pot boiling for their own purposes.

Obama is careful of his statements and he did state back in April:

Obama said that as president he would indeed ask his new Attorney General and his deputies to "immediately review the information that's already there" and determine if an inquiry is warranted -- but he also tread carefully on the issue, in line with his reputation for seeking to bridge the partisan divide. He worried that such a probe could be spun as "a partisan witch hunt." However, he said that equation changes if there was willful criminality, because "nobody is above the law."

If Mccain thinks this way about heath coverage, then let him lead the way and give up his tax payer paid health coverage.

Tax payers can give McCain and Lindsy Graham $100 a year and they can "chip" in the rest for their coverage.

Historical fact, from the day McCain was born on tax payer money, he lived his entire life on tax payer's money. Why doesn't John go out and get one of those great republican private sector jobs? Johnny might find out he is not that knowledgable to suvive the private sector let alone being popular with the private sector once he is not a Senator anymore.
