McCain: ‘It’s not my style to simply phone it in.’

At a rally in Ohio today, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) touted his decision to come back to Washington last week to work on the financial bailout:

Remarkably, some people have criticized my decision to put my country first, but I’ll never be a president who sits on the sidelines when this country faces a crisis. I’ll never do that. I know that many of you have noticed it’s not my style to simply phone it in. I’m a Teddy Roosevelt Republican. I believe our leaders belong in the arena — in the arena — when your country faces a challenge. Not on the road in a campaign. I’ve never been afraid of stepping in to solve problems for the American people and I’m not going to stop now.

Watch it:

However, phoning it in is exactly what McCain did do. Explaining why McCain never went to Capitol Hill on Friday or Saturday after rushing back to Washington after the debate, top aide Mark Salter explained that McCain “can effectively do what he needs to do by phone.”

John McCain has a bracelet, was a POW, and is a maverick!

    Top that Sen. Obama!

  2. upside99 Says:

You mean McDepends knows how to use a telephone????????

    Who'da thunk!

  3. paleolib Says:

Give it up McNutzi. Aside from having been born the same year you have nothing in common with Teddy Roosevelt.

  4. the Lone Voice of Reason Says:

    Yeah, upside99--Jitterbug

  5. BuckarooBanzai Says:

Too bad his audience is a bunch of ill-informed mouth breathers that have no idea he is lying to them. The republicans depend on the ignorant. That's their base.

  6. larkohio Says:

Give me a break! He accomplished nothing but to piss of David Letterman.

  7. hussein toasterhead Says:

You know, McCain - I'm pretty sure Teddy Roosevelt was capable of doing more than one thing at a time.

That's just one of many ways in which you bear absolutely no resemblance to Teddy Roosevelt.

  8. BearCountry Says:

Every day leaves me totally confused. No two people in mccain's campaign say the same thing about anything. Every statement has to be reworked or buried. mccain himself is least likely to say the same thing about any point within the same speech or "town meeting." How does he continue to have more support than w at this time? Is it the "scary" appearance of Obama?

  9. Leftside Annie Says:

Jebus. What a blithering, babbling IDIOT!

  10. DidHeJustSayThat Says:

    Hypocrisy? No, not a republican!

The stunt was meant to delay the Palin debate, pure and simple. Get the first Pres debate moved to Thursday and reschedule the VP debate for never.

The suspension was seen by everyone not affiliated with the McCain camp as ridiculous.

"I believe our leaders belong in the arena — in the arena — when your country faces a challenge."

"Mute, but in the arena for a photo op." - McCurmudgeon

  12. upside99 Says:

As we all have posted before in different forms but it does bear a constant repeating:

McCain: "The Perfect 20th Century Man for a 21st Century Job"

And, BTW, we all know that he is a "non-Miss Congeniality". Now that makes me feel SOOOO much better!

  13. Michael Lafferty Says:

"I believe our leaders belong in the arena—in the arena—when your country faces a challenge."

Reportedly in the arena, just sitting on the sidelines. Way to go, 'Johnnie Reb!' You maverick, you…

  14. the Lone Voice of Reason Says:

"I believe our leaders belong in the arena"

Arena-an enclosed area used to present spectacles
Spectacle-make a spectacle of oneself, to call attention to one's unseemly behavior; behave foolishly or badly in public

McDepends definitely belongs in an arena-I'm thinking it has three rings

  15. Shayne Says:

McCain hasn't been able to "phone" anybody since they stopped making phones with rotary dials. Who is he kidding?

  16. Cappy Says:

Since he did not have to call long distance, McCain considers that not phoning it in.

  17. Jackie Says:

I guess openly lying is now common with the GOP. McCain saw his low poll numbers and his campaign manager who is still getting money from Fannie Mae, Palin seen for the idiot she is so he closed down shop. As for his so called concern for the Economy, he was having dinner with friends while others were busy working on a deal. Yes he did call to see what was happening but it really didn't have time as he was entertaining at the time.

  18. Bobwurst Says:

Mccain, "It's not my style to phone it in, I use the telegraph!"

  19. RUCerious Says:

Howwza bout stepping in to sit in meetings and say not a godamn word?

I've read a lot about Theodore Roosevelt, McIIIrd, and your no rough rider, just a poseur.

  20. SnowCritter Says:

Teddy Roosevelt fought against the "malefactors of great wealth". John McCain has been in their front man for years.

John McCain is not in the same set as T.R.

  21. ralph the wonder llama Says:

    "A Teddy Roosevelt Republican"???

Isn't that reference a bit too topical for his base?

  22. tombaker Says:

Which is why he had NOTHING TO ADD in his meeting with principals at the White House.

    Sad, old, desperate LIAR.

  23. MCMetal Says:

McCain: ‘It’s not my style to simply phone it in.’

But it is your 'style' to bullshit constantly ...........

    .

    So,
Johnny has enough dexterity to actually use a phone...
... But his war injuries prevent him from using a keyboard?

    .

  26. Leftside Annie Says:

    A "Teddy Roosevelt Republican"...?

Hardly. But - I can say with all sincerity that McLoser *IS* a "bully."

    And there ends the resemblence.

  27. Doc Rock Says:

Let's send McCain back to work for his old boss, Joe Biden, when Biden becomes President of the Senate.

  28. stateofthedivision Says:

Sometimes John can just wish it, so the phone isn't necessary!

What's your wish on interest rates, John? Since Wall Street didn't adequately price credit for the last 6 years, where might they reset? No leader's talking about it, but these is not unreasonable:

30 year fixed mortgage 15%Credit card APR 29%CCC rated corporate debt 20%

Wish hard, John. The fundamentals of our economy are strong...

  29. katy Says:

the AP radio news report, about this rally, ended with a comment that mcSPIN told his audience that it all comes down to: country first or obama first.

    how ridiculous is that?

and what the hell does it even mean?

  30. Oval12345678 aka James K. Sayre Says:

Me, my, I: McCain puts himself first, his lobbyists/campaign staff second, the GOP third and America about 5th or 6th in his personal priority rankings.

  31. JMOHR Says:

Sounds like a good attack ad. Where is the media on this? Another example of outright lies and manipulation by the McCain camp. This goes far beyond merely favoring one candidate over another. This gets to the very basis of democracy, free press and national survival. Obviously the concentrated, corporate media has absolutely no desire to put the interests of this nation first.

  32. tombaker Says:

32 - Katy - it means that, because he can't speak to any of the issues coherently without using Obama's positions as his own, all that John McCain can do is launch smear after smear after smear, and cynically hope that enough Americans are mean enough and stupid enough to be persuaded.

McCain First - "Because all you non-pow bastards OWE IT TO ME"

  33. katy Says:

hey! which one of you are from columbia mo?!

(noted from the count at oldhack's site - don't freak)

i lived there a few years, mid 70s... just curious...

  34. Max-1 Says:

    .

    To be fair,
    Johnny was phoning a friend...

    .

  35. Wayne Says:

    JMOHR Says:

Where is the media on this?

The Corporate owned media is trying to figure out how to keep the "poll" numbers even so they can still play this as a head to head horse race, so people won't revolt when the Diabold numbers come in declaring McCain the winner of Bush's third term.

They declared the debate a "tie" and those silly poll numbers are just not agreeing with them. Shame on those poll takers for not skewing the numbers the right way...

  36. misshusseinmolly Says:

McCain: "I’m a Teddy Roosevelt Republican."
    _________________________________________________________

Not even close. Teddy Roosevelt was a progressive. You, sir, are no progressive. You aren't even a maverick anymore. You're just a reactionary obstructionist Republican hack.

Which is a pity. You could have taken your party back and given it a soul. But instead, you surrendered your soul to it.

  37. Art Says:

Did you all happen to know he was a POW? :)

  38. Buckie Boy Says:

Did he phone it in on the Blackberry that he invented?

Have you guys heard the news, that McGonnaDieSoon is a Maverick and a POW???

Wow, I'm gonna have to vote for that kind of credentials....

    .....NOT.

  39. celtic cynic Says:

Maybe McCain was there in spirit - NOT, or maybe he dreamed about it.

  40. BuckarooBanzai Says:

I didn't win Miss Congeniality = my colleagues all think I'm a flaming a**hole and would rather not work with me.

Just the type of guy we need in the White House. Like the current flaming a**hole in residence.

  41. BuckarooBanzai Says:

I like this definition of maverick: "an unbranded range animial, owned by the first person to put their brand on it."

    Yep, that's McCain.

  42. 5th Estate Says:

"I’ve never been afraid of stepping in to solve problems for the American people and I’m not going to stop now."

Well the bailout bill just failed, the DOW dropped 630 points.

So John...are you going to step in?

  43. An Outhouse Says:

    Teddy Roosevelt?

I thought he was a Chester Arthur Republican:

    # When Chester Arthur moved to White House, he was dumbstruck by the huge amount of furniture that was piled up in the place. He got the entire furniture removed in 26 wagons and sold them for just $8000, including many invaluable furnitures.

    # President Arthur Chester was a skilled fisherman and even went out fishing in his leisure time.
