White House Press Corps Fails To Ask A Single Question On U.S. Attorney Investigation

Today, the Office of Public Responsibility and the Department of Justice Inspector General released the culmination of an 18-month investigation: a report finding that the firing process of the nine U.S. Attorneys was “fundamentally flawed” and in some cases, governed by politics. The investigation also found that former attorney general Alberto Gonzales, Justice Department aide Kyle Sampson, and other Justice officials made “inconsistent, misleading, and inaccurate” statements about their reasons for firing the attorneys.

The investigators also noted that its report was in many ways incomplete, due to the White House’s stonewalling:

[T]here are gaps in our investigation because of the refusal of certain key witnesses to be interviewed by us, including former White House officials Karl Rove, Harriet Miers, and William Kelley, former Department of Justice White House Liaison Monica Goodling, Senator Pete Domenici, and his Chief of Staff. In addition, the White House would not provide us internal documents related to the removals of the U.S. Attorneys.

Today, Attorney General Michael Mukasey appointed a special prosecutor to continue the investigation into Gonzales and other officials “to determine whether any prosecutable offense” was committed in the attorney firings. Despite this action, the White House press corps made no mention of the investigation during the 40-minute briefing with spokesman Tony Fratto.

Reacting to the report today, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-VT) said the abuses documented in the report “are corrosive to the very foundations of our system of justice.” He also warned President Bush that “any misuse of the pardon power” to the benefit of administration officials involved will be seen “as an admission of wrongdoing and misuse of power.” Watch it:

The media rats are trained to get Perino/Fratto pellets. That, or other nefarious behavior rated higher on their list of questions.

Either scenario is sad for our country.

    Well, duh!

The White House “can’t comment on an ongoing investigation”.

I’m surprised you guys didn’t know that.

Business as usual for the White House Press Corpse.

  6. sectionop92 says:

This economic crisis has opened the door for Gonzales to get away, free and clear of any substantial punishment(s).

Unless there is a explosive surprise still out there, Alberto the Terrible will be a hero of the neocons like Oliver North is.

Why should the White House Press Corpses, after 8 phucking years, start asking relevant questions now?

  11. MrSquirrel says:

Did that Gonzales guy lie about 50 times to Congress? And he wasn’t even good at it. He would have forgotten what he had for breakfast that morning, if he thought the answer was incriminating.

  12. tokin librul says:

THE one, single, most pertinent question I’ve never heard articulated is:

“What did the 93 US ATTORNEYs who DIDN’T get fired have to do to KEEP their sinecure gigs?”

On or about Nov. 3, and thereafter, I suspect some–though not all–of those will be illuminated…

  14. Another Joe says:

Why should the press corp care when the DEMOCRATS don’t care. One of their own was arrested and railroaded into prison for purely political reasons.

They have not done a thing about it – rove was subpoena and did not show up. That was the end of it – rove isn’t the only one to thumb his nose at the Dems and defy subpoenas.

Please folks – we can’t see change as long as the self-proclaimed “opposition” takes impeachment off the table and does nothing more than send nasty letter.

I know this will not be popular with some, but it needs to be said – the Dems have sold us out too, they even sold out one of their own, Don Siegelman.

And you think the press should ask questions? Give me a break.

Thanks again for Muckasey Di_Fi and Schumer. We need new leaders!

White House Press Corps fail?? So, what else is new? Or perhaps Black Mondays have become the new document dump Friday.

  18. TheRadicalRightisRadicallyWrong says:

C’mon, you can’t possibly expect them to ask questions on matters unrelated to the Wall St. melt-down. They can only concentrate on one scare story at a time. Sheesh.

    Snark/on full!

Completely off topic, Sorry I’ve been away for so long but neither of my computers allow me access to this sight. I think I have a malware but Spybot can’t find it. Any thoughts on how to fix it?

  19. tokin librul says:

Pajama Pete Domenici WAS DEFINITELY to blame for the firing of NM US Atty, David Iglesias, last year.

Domenici’s a dirty, bushevik, corpoRat slag who’s retiring to die of an incurable brain disease. B-bye Pete…See ya in hell…

  20. Another Joe says:

TheRadicalRightisRadicallyWrong, are you also now on the “no fly list”?

Maybe it all gets held up at the at&t intercept center – you know, obama helped give the telecoms a “free pass” to monitor you for any reason at all (or no reason) and there is not a thing you can do about it.

Which relates to the topic – sure, the MSM is horrible. But that is what lying liars do – they lie and obfuscate. That shouldn’t surprise anyone – dur chimpfurher and his criminal cabal have been enabled by these lies and obfuscations.

Now what it the excuse for the dem party being part of it all?

  21. acv says:

    To Another Joe:
I agree with you – the Democrats have sold us out. It’s shameful.

Part of authority is enforcing it! They’ve just watched the rule of law made into a joke by Fox News commentators. Our Congressional leaders don’t have the will to fight a bully. I’m furious they have not enforced the subpoena (a lawfully issued subpoena) against a respected “fair and balanced” commentator.

After they finish the bailout they should draft a bill introducing legislation for a “No Accountability Day.” This will help remove any lingering stigma associated with violating the rule of law or using the justice system to further political and religious ideology.

  22. TheRadicalRightisRadicallyWrong says:

    Joe, Thanks for not helping…

    Any one?

Is there a fix for finding this malware. When I try to connect to this sight from either of my machines it says done on the bottom left corner of my screen but the window is BLANK. It never loads even though it says it has? Help! Please!

  23. Mr. Evil says:

Because the latest in neocon smokescreens is working as planned. You have the Great American Economic Meltdown of 2008 vs. Improperly Fired Attorneys. Watch this closely because as soon as Wall Street gets what it wants (lots of free money to further squander) you’ll hear nothing more about it. Then maybe you’ll hear about the attorney firings. But with the presidential campaigns, debates, Sarah Palin’s lunacy, we might have to wait even longer.

  24. Mr. Evil says:

    TheRadicalRightisRadicallyWrong Says: #18

Check your internet settings to see if somehow TP got on the block list. Delete all your cookies too just in case some crappy neocon site you may have visited dropped one in your system that may conflict with you wanting to go to well known progressive sites. Also, download Spyware Blaster from Javacools. It prevents any malware, spyware, ad bots, etc. from installing in your system. It works in the background and all you have to do is download updates about once a week then close it. It works very well. Extremely easy to use. Hope any of this helps.

RRRW see Mr Evil # 24.

I used Spybot for a couple of years to about a year ago but I haven’t needed it since.
Is your browser version up to date?
I have IE 7.0.5730.13 and Firefox 3.0.3 ( now preferred) and no problems with either.

  27. Doc Rock says:

And what charges was Clinton impeached for?

    5th estate,
One ALWAYS needs protection when browsing.

  29. Another Joe says:

And what charges was Clinton impeached for?

Doesn’t matter – pelosi took it off the table anyhow. Too bad, you know there was some hanky panking when a homosexual prostitute with fake press credentials (gannon/guckert) comes and goes as he pleases repeatedly at the WH at beddy-time.

  30. DallasNE says:

This is not a special prosecutor. That law expired. This is a staff attorney. Another example of putting the fox in charge of the hen house.

  31. TheRadicalRightisRadicallyWrong says:

    Mr. Evil Says:

    Thanks!

I have Spybot running and I’ve cleared cookies but still nothing and the weird thing is that it’s not redirecting my browser, it looks as if I’m at TP but the window is completely blank and it says “done” at the bottom as if the page is fully loaded?

  32. TheRadicalRightisRadicallyWrong says:

    5th Estate Says:

    Thanks!

I think so? But my antivirus says I’ve got a Trojan horse that it’s quarantained but can’t fix?

  33. republicanSScareme says:

The fact that Barney Frank and Rham Emanuel put together this “compromise” bailout bill makes it dead on arrival in my book. Why are Zionists allowed to run America?
