Did Gingrich Give Marching Orders To House GOP To Vote Against Bailout?

Now that House Republicans are insisting their vote against the bailout yesterday had nothing to do with Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s supposedly “partisan” speech, some are wondering what in fact turned at least 10 Republican votes Blunt thought he had against the bill.

NBC’s Andrea Mitchell reported this morning that conservatives may have been taking their marching orders from former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who “was whipping against this up until the last minute” — despite issuing a statement supporting the bill as the vote was taking place:

MITCHELL: I’m told reliably by leading Republicans who are close to him, he was whipping against this up until the last minute when he issued that face-saving statement. Newt Gingrich was telling people in the strongest possible language that this was a terrible deal, not only that it was a terrible deal, that it was a disaster, it was the end of democracy as we know it, it was socialism. And then at the last minute comes out with a statement when the vote is already in place.

Watch it:

Reacting to the news, NBC’s Mike Barnicle said he had been told by congressional conservatives that the move was “the opening salvo of Newt Gingrich’s presidential campaign four years hence.” Speaking at the National Press Club today, Gingrich denied Mitchell’s claim, saying MSNBC is wrong and probably “wrong deliberately” because its a “stunningly dishonest network.” “I was actually reluctantly trying to help it get through,” he said.

Even throughout yesterday, Gingrich’s position was nearly impossible to pin down. On Glenn Beck’s radio show, he admitted, “I’m not sure if I were in the Congress I could vote against it” while also declaring that Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson “should be fired” and that the bailout plan “is still a bad bill.” On Fox News last night, he seemed to praise the House’s rejection of the bill: “The vote today indicated that even when they’d worked for five days to try to improve what was really a pretty terrible original plan that [Paulson] sent up, it still couldn’t get a majority in the House.”

Apparently, Gingrich was against the bailout before he was for it — before he was against it again.

Gingrich was also FOR impeaching President Clinton for adultery at the same time as having yet another affair himself…

Gingrich embodies the “It’s OK if you’re a Republican.” mentality.

Can’t imagine this Kermit the Frog as President.

  4. gummitch says:

If that doesn’t give you chills down your backbone, nothing will: Gingrich presidential bid in 2012. Just goes to show, you can’t really get rid of roaches; they keep crawling back out of the dark whenever you turn your back.

EU says U.S. must meet finance crisis responsibility

BRUSSELS (Reuters) – The United States must live up to its special responsibility to resolve the global credit crisis, the European Commission said on Tuesday, calling for swift enactment of a bailout plan for the financial sector.

In an unusually sharp statement, a spokesman for the European Union executive said the EU was disappointed at the U.S. House of Representatives’ rejection of a $700 billion (389 billion pound) rescue package for distressed banks and financial institutions.

“The U.S. must take its responsibility in this situation,” spokesman Johannes Laitenberger told a news conference, adding that Europe expected Congress to act fast.

Just who is the head of the GOP these days? Clearly not McStain, Boner can’t deliver the votes he promised to deliver, the Boy King is drunk in some corner with the blankie, Cheney is, well who ever knows where Cheney is?

If McStain can’t rally his own party, who have been trained to march in lockstep with its leadership year after year after year, who can he lead?

    PEACE

The only good thing about the nastiness of this campaign is people are starting to name names. It’s informative to learn some of the people behind the blue curtain, the ones pulling the strings and kicking in cash.

Gingrich loved his wife before she contracted cancer and became a campaign liability. I believe he abandoned his family who had to seek refuge at their church.

If we keep allowing psychopaths to lead us, we will keep getting the same treatment.

In the absence of true leadership, a vacuum is created. In steps the Newt.

And if Newt is there, can Tom Delay be far behind? (I’ll just bet that ol’ Tom’s reliving the glory days of hammering {blackmailing} people)

  16. GeeDubs says:

Ah…the weasily Republican mindset at work again! Talk out of the both sides of your mouth and present one image to your ‘pals’ and another image to your ‘constituents.’ How terribly convenient. Do these people have absolutely no shame about anything anymore? This self-serving attitude is what got us into this mess and all the lipstick in the world won’t save this pig from looking butt-ugly.

  17. Frosty Cupcake says:

On the other hand, I never thought I’d ever (ever!) agree with Gingrich, but I do agree it was a terrible bill.

Which virtually ensures it will pass, albeit in a slightly different form, on Thursday.

Pray tell, where are all those great up-to-the-minute public opinion polls that might show the massive unpopularity of this $700B armed robbery, aka, the bailout? Or are the ruling classes covering up on this little bit of information?

  20. Game of Life says:

Man, repugs lie without thinking. They were all over tv telling everyone it was pelosi’s fault. They were waving a copy of pelosi’s transcript crying like the bed wetters they are.

Now they find out they look like fiucking crybabies so again they changed their story.

    repugs are dangerous weenies.

I had the same bad dream; the Repug 2012 ticket of Newt/DeLay.

That would be as scary (or more so), than Dubya/Darth has been.

  23. GeeDubs says:

I agree the bill was a mess and was happy they shot it down. But to privately finagle against it and then publicly support it is glaringly opportunistic…but what Republican hasn’t been THAT for 25 years? Talk about hurt feelings – wasn’t Newtie the one who shut down the government because Clinton wouldn’t let him in the front of the plane? Maybe the US needs to hit rock bottom before this predatory capitalism bullcrap is hauled off to the dustbin of history.

  24. barracks9 says:

Didya notice how quickly the language changed back to “bailout” as it failed? No longer is it being phrased as the “rescue” but “blame for the failure of the bailout.”

    Coincidence? I think not.

  25. Leftside Annie says:

I hate Republicans. They are just plain EVIL and must be destroyed.

  26. eyesopen says:

I’m not convinced that Newt is waiting for 2012. I think he may be looking at replacing McCain for 2008 for “health reasons” or whatever other canard proves handy. That’s why he’s polishing his congressional control bona fides by holding the hoop that they jump through.

Replace McCain and hold on to Palin for impeachment insurance, and then we’ll see how authoritarian government is supposed to work, according to the newt. It has the added attraction of not having to appeal to primary voters who would have handed him his hat, but the base will play, intact, especially after the clown college performance McCain has regaled Republicans with to date.

If it’s going to happen, it will have to happen in the next week to two weeks. If it doesn’t happen in that window, it won’t happen.

So, keep your fingers crossed and hope that you don’t have to double down on your revulsion.

  27. Game of Life says:

No bail out for thieves. Help the people who got screwed.

Newt won’t be president matter of fact no repug will be president for a very long time.

    OT-
Did y’all see how daddy mcchimpy had to sit beside plain during Couric’s interview.

Now mcchimpy is using his lame talking point, “gottcha” journalism. How ridiculous is that? Now asking plain a question is a “gottcha.” GMAFB.

A racist is a person who excuses or makes up excuses for white people’s wrongdoings while throwing the book at people of color for WWB (walking while brown.)

  28. tombaker says:

Newton, a man of great conceit, must believe current conditions provide him an opening to stage a “comeback”

That’s sad for him, and sadder still for the R’s in Congress whose ship has no rudder and no sail.

That party of theirs must be abolished, it’s already destroyed.

Next, the dems who won’t prosecute repugs’ blatant crimes must go. If the dems act too slowly or write too many beggin letters or talk too much about taking act…bye-bye.

I hate to say this – Gingrich was right – this Bill sucks.

Unfortunately, Republicans and Democrats (the ones you see on TV) work for the same outfit. They wear different jerseys but go to the same school.

Nothing will change until we demand it. Throwing the bums out and gaining control of our election process (diebold) would be a good first start.

  36. MapleStreet says:

And of course, don’t forget to blame the democrats for the bill not passing. The dems are to blame for the market loosing 10% in one day. In fact, I’m sure this is some sort of fallout from Bill Clinton.

  37. triciawal says:

Why doesn’t Mrs. Greenspan keep her lib bias mouth shut when it comes to this despicable bill that everyone is happy it did not pass?(except Paulsen and Bush. She makes me want to slap her upside the head when she starts with her know-it-all imperial attitude. She’s quite comfortable on the Obama channel. Watch Fox and learn something.
