Schwarzenegger vetoes bill honoring LGBT icon Harvey Milk.»

harvey_milk.jpgYesterday, California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed a bill that “would have made the birthday of gay political icon Harvey Milk a statewide ‘day of significance.’” Schwarzenegger, who opposes efforts to ban same-sex marriage in the state, explained his veto by saying that he believes Milk should “be recognized at the local level.” But the AP notes that conservative groups had lobbied the governor to oppose the measure:

In his veto message issued Tuesday, the governor said that while he respected the measure’s intent, he thinks Milk’s “contributions should continue to be recognized at the local level.”

Conservative groups had lobbied Schwarzenegger not to sign the legislation, sponsored by Assemblyman Mark Leno of San Francisco.

Milk, who was the first openly gay man to hold a prominent political office in America, was assassinated in 1978. Watch the trailer of Gus Van Sant’s upcoming biopic of Milk.

Methinks Arnold has spent too much time looking at his muscles in the mirror. He’s afraid teh gay might rub off on him.

Didn’t the first six read the story?

He OPPOSES a ban on same-sex marriage.
He also opposed a statewide day for a city official.

What is more important to you people?

Ahnold is trying to pander to too many people at the same time. He should have stuck to acting.

    Such as it was….

Dudes, why aren’t you covering the Senate bailout vote today? Don’t want to take a position? Don’t want to be on the record as saying “tell your senators to vote for/against this bill” so if it turns out you’re wrong, you won’t get called on it?

That’s certainly one valid possibilty. Here’s another one — he might have decided that removing Harvey Milk from the canvas was necessary to prevent an anti-gay backlash that could have made it more difficult to defeat Proposition 8 in November. I think even Harvey would agree that given the choice, giving gays equal rights is more important than giving him a special day.

Arnold, underneath it all, a little insecure in masculinity? A closeted log cabin repuglican?

  15. deebaser Says:

Voting on a statewide ‘day of signifigance’ is first of all not legislative business and frankly a waste of time.

However, vetoing a statewide ‘day of signifigance’ that the majority of the state leg voted for is equally foolish.

Is it too much to ask that we have our reps on all level of government focused on actually governing?

    way to go, arnie! (as*hole)….

hey, there’s my ‘hood in that gus van zant trailer! yeah castro!

  17. Anacher Forester Says:

In the grand scheme of things, it is more important that Arnold is against the gay marriage ban. I have no idea what the heck “a statewide ‘day of significance’” means. But, especially in California, what harm would come to anyone (Governator included) to recognize Harvey Milk in this way?

Go figures he would pander to the conservative base he is planning to run for US Senate as the incumbent will probably be running for his spot (Go DIANE )!
