Log Cabin Republicans: “We know people don’t ‘choose’ their sexual orientation.”

In an interview with Katie Couric, Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) said that one of her friends who is gay “happens to have made a choice” that Palin would not have made herself. In a statement to ThinkProgress, Scott Tucker, the communications director for the Log Cabin Republicans — a group that endorsed Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) — defended Palin, though he emphasized that his group would have to “continue educating all Republicans” about the fact that homosexuality is not a choice:

In this interview, Gov. Palin expressed her support for a gay friend of 30 years and reiterated that she doesn’t judge people. She said she’s ‘not going to judge Americans and the decisions they make in their adult personal relationships.’ Frankly, I think that’s where most Americans are in their attitude toward gay and lesbian people.

Gov. Palin didn’t ramble uncomfortably about a ‘lifestyle’ or use the opportunity to reiterate her opposition to marriage for gay couples. She didn’t use the opportunity to express opposition to any gay rights legislation. Gay Democrats are pouncing on her use of the word ‘choice’ in talking about gay people. But, when asked the direct question by Charlie Gibson in a previous interview whether people choose to be gay, she said she didn’t know. Again, I think that’s where the vast majority of Americans are on this issue-they simply don’t know whether people choose to be gay.

We know that people don’t ‘choose’ their sexual orientation and we’ll continue educating all Republicans about that issue.

I wonder how many times a person has to sell their soul before they realize they never will be accepted into the club?

    Poor, self-loathing gay conservatives...

    BULLSPIT!

In the same breath, Bible Spice said people choose to be gay the way some people choose to be terrorists. Come on, Tinker Toys! Snap out of it! Listen to the words she's saying, and stop thinking how cute you and your life partner are going to be as the Governor Hatin' and her preggo daughter.

Again, I think that’s where the vast majority of Americans are on this issue-they simply don’t know whether people choose to be gay.

Really? I think if you polled America, they'd be pretty specific - and demonstably vocal - about whether they believed it was a choice or not.

What a bunch of toadying buffoons. As a gay man, these people embarrass the snot out of me.

  7. RUCerious Says:

    Note to veepcandidate Palin:

When you talk, it's obvious that you haven't a clue.

Can you do a debate with mime?

Interesting, because as a not gay man I'm MORE than embarrassed by Republicans

  9. 666lattes Says:

Well, to be fair, there are more important issues for our Nation than that of sexual orientation, but still...

    Their website states:
"The GOP rose to power because it embraced the ideals of equality imagined by our nation's founding fathers and ensured by our Constitution. When Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, a 'new birth of freedom,' was indeed given to our country. Now, more than 150 years later, the GOP has another chance to choose fairness over discrimination, equality over bigotry, hope over fear, and freedom over oppression."

Get a clue... Lincoln would not recognize this party as it exists today.

    Message to gay Republicans...

Your own party is disgusted by you. You're morons for staying in the party. They will end up putting you in prison before they acknowledge that gay people are equal citizens under the eyes of the law.

Are the Log Closet Republicans really gay? Or is it a well-financed farce?

Why do LCR's tolerate hatred from their own Party...
... Or are they kinky in "that way"?

These people are a bunch of self-loathing men who are on the eternal quest for approval from the daddy figure. In this case, the GOP.

  21. HankT27 Says:

I don't get all this "choice" talk.

Who the hell cares if it is a choice? Why would that somehow mean that someone is not entitled to have the same rights as everybody else.

Although, I don't know anyone who looks at someone and says, "Yeah, that's the person I am going to choose to fall madly in love with."

  22. GeeDubs Says:

As a gay man, it's apparent to me the Log Cabin Republicans are in it for only one reason - as is ANYONE who is a Republican. It's the money, stupid. Why would you endorse a mean-spirited temper-fueled rage-aholic that wants to make sure you can never publicly express the love you have for your partner? Why would you vote for a guy that would like to take your adopted kid away from you if he could? Why would you vote for a clueless bimbo who thinks it a choice? You can 'educate' all you want - but these people (if you can call them that) aren't going to listen - EVER.

Republicans and small town values (Jon Stewart)

"Gays have all the rights that they want... all they gotta do is marry a person of the opposite sex."
