Our guest blogger is Dr. Clark Newhall, MD/JD of Salt Lake City, UT, one of over 2,700 doctors from around the country who signed an open letter calling on John McCain to release his medical records.
In a time of increasingly complex and difficult issues both here and abroad, it is imperative for Americans to know the health of the candidates. Yet John McCain has never released his full medical records and he has severely restricted the public’s ability to judge his health. When McCain publicly “disclosed” his medical history, what he really did was provide a carefully selected set of medical records (1,173 pages in all) to 20 carefully selected reporters who were allowed three hours to review that massive pile of paper. They were not allowed to make copies and not allowed to consult with medical experts during the review. With this kind of pseudo-review, it is certain that we cannot know much about McCain’s health.
What we do know is concerning: The Armed Forces Institute of Pathology reviewed the cancer taken off McCain’s head in 2000 and found it to be “highly suggestive of a metastasis of malignant melanoma and may represent a satellite metastasis.” Even with the most optimistic scenario, if McCain has a metastatic malignant melanoma, he has only a 38% chance of surviving past 2010.
McCain had a melanoma taken off his head in 2000 but he has had several other melanoma cancers removed before that. It is not difficult to believe that a previous melanoma could have been the metastasis to the temple that was removed in 2000. If John McCain has a recurrence of melanoma, the attendant surgery with the possibility of chemotherapy is likely to be debilitating.
For these reasons, it is imperative that Americans demand the full and unconditional release of John McCain’s medical records.
Amen! If John McCain wants to truly serve this country, he'll release his medical records. Basic, fundamental honesty is another service that he truly owes this nation. That being said, McWorse will kindly remind us that there was a time he didn't have medical records (POW!), now get off my lawn!
October 1st, 2008 at 5:25 pmImpeach Pelosi, Cheney and Bush and Save the Constitution!
My money is on McCain actually having already succumbed to cancer, and what we're seeing now is a grotesque "weekend at bernies" meets "the manchurian candidate" collision brought to you by the fine folks at the CIA's artificial intelligence division...palin is obviously one of the primitive models as seen in Halloween 3...
October 1st, 2008 at 5:26 pmCome on john. The election is damn near over anyway. Release your health records.

What's it going to take, McCain falling over in a coma, or dead, for these records to be released?
His left eye has been drooping, his speech has been slurred (not in the "I'm drunk" way we've come to expect from Bush) his thoughts seem muddled, and it looks like his blood pressure jumps up and down in interviews.
No, I'm not Dr. Frist, diagnosing from a video, but I do think questions that warrent answers have been raised.

October 1st, 2008 at 5:31 pmGood luck. He won't release his full military record either, and he's based his whole political career on his military 'experience'.

What he doesn't have is a defense for his candidate so he has to change the subject.

October 1st, 2008 at 5:40 pmIf the Republican machines said the Republicans won again and the odds are correct on him not making it through 2010, then we would have the beginnings of a theocracy in the US. At least the executive branch.
October 1st, 2008 at 5:43 pmUh, Annie? I think you don't know what "strawman" means. Perhaps you should google it.
To livelongandprosper, who said,
what does all that have to do with McCain’s health records?
Nothing, per se. But the suggestion that McCain is "hiding" something, which is (allegedly) proved by the fact that he has not disclosed his medical records cuts both ways. To wit, the fact that Mr. Obama refuses to disclose much of his own personal information "proves" that he is hiding something as well.
Perhaps his grades were worse than Mr. Bush's? Perhaps he got an "F" in Remedial Basket Weaving 101? Perhaps he was expelled from Occidental?
Oh, will the speculation never end?????

We have a lot fewer trolls than we used to, but the ones we do have are extraordinarily stupid.
October 1st, 2008 at 5:46 pmOur right to privacy as far as our medical history is concerned is valued by virtually all Americans. Whenever we go to the doctor, we are even required to read a booklet outlining our right to privacy and what that means concerning the disposition of our medical records.
However, if I get sick or have a chronic medical condition, that really doesn't affect that many people. The President of the United States is another matter. The people have the right to know if their President is likely to survive his term in office, or if he has any condition that's likely to affect his ability to make decisions or carry out his duties.
For this reason, McCain (AND Obama, AND Biden, AND Palin) must release their medical records to the public and allow us to judge for ourselves. Yes, we know that nobody has "perfect" health. Everybody is going to have a few dings on their medical records. I doubt that minor medical conditions are going to sway too many people. But we deserve to know and make our own decisions.
October 1st, 2008 at 5:47 pmOh, I'm so sure Obama's grades were worse than Legacy Admission Bush. That's how he got into Harvard Law, and that's why he was elected President of the Harvard Law Review.
But now that you mention it, we do know that McStain ranked 894th of 899. How did Palin do? Let's see her transcripts. Granted, it will take quite some time to gather them, as she went to 6 schools in 5 years, or 5 schools in 6 years, none of them impressive.
Next?

October 1st, 2008 at 5:51 pmGreat idea Scalper, Obama should release his full education records and so should McCain and Paling and Biden. Love to see how well McCain did before he ended up at the bottom of his class at the naval academy and to find out why Palin had to change schools 5 times before she allegedly received her undergraduate degree. Obama already released his full medical records as has Biden. I'd love to see Sarah's with full details on that last supposed pregnancy.
October 1st, 2008 at 5:51 pmScaliger, I think everyone can agree that Obama was president of the Harvard Law Review and that McCain finished 894th out of 899 at Annapolis (and only was admitted as a legacy).
October 1st, 2008 at 5:52 pmSo far, I don't think they have found anyone who remembers Palin attending any of the four schools it took her to get a BA in communications. But the question was health and I have seen Obama play bball with UNC. Go Heels.
FINALLY, TP... THANK YOU!
October 1st, 2008 at 5:52 pmScaliger,
I have no problems requesting that Obama release his college transcripts. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Harvard and was the editor of the Harvard Law Review. That means he can probably name more than one Supreme Court decision. His client list would be protected under attorney-client privilege, and therefore should not be released. The State Senate schedule is a matter of public record and his Selective Service info could most likely be gained through a FOIA - though I don't see where it would matter. McCain on the other hand is hiding information that is very relevant as to how well he would be able to complete his term as president. He also graduated 894 out of 899 in his class at the Naval Academy. Palin went to 6 colleges in 6 years - none of them with the prestige of Harvard or Columbia. The press would love to ask her about her records, but they aren't allowed to talk to her.

October 1st, 2008 at 6:01 pmAP Poll: Obama pulls away to 7-point lead
By LIZ SIDOTI (Associated Press Writer)

October 01, 2008 3:54 PM EDT
WASHINGTON - Barack Obama has surged to a seven-point lead over John McCain one month before the presidential election, lifted by voters who think the Democrat is better suited to lead America through its sudden financial crisis, according to an Associated Press-GfK poll that underscores the mounting concerns of some McCain backers.
Likely voters now back Obama 48-41 percent over McCain, a dramatic shift from an AP-GfK survey that gave the Republican a slight edge nearly three weeks ago, before Wall Street collapsed and sent ripples across worldwide markets. On top of that, unrelated surveys show Obama beating McCain in Ohio, Florida and Pennsylvania - three states critical in the state-by-state fight for the presidency.

McCain Voted Against Adding More Than $400 Million for Veterans' Care. McCain was one of 13 Republicans to vote against providing an additional $430 million to the Department of Veterans Affairs for outpatient care and treatment for veterans. (S.Amdt. 3642 to H.R. 4939, Vote 98, 4/26/06)
McCain Supported Outsourcing VA Jobs. McCain opposed an amendment that would have prevented the Department of Veterans Affairs from outsourcing jobs, many held by blue-collar veterans, without first giving the workers a chance to compete. (S.Amdt. 2673 to H.R. 2642, Vote 315, 9/6/07)

The increase would be offset by a reduction in tax cuts for the wealthy. (S.Amdt. 324 to S.C.R. 23, Vote 81, 3/25/03)

He was absolutely livid after reading how McCain has been systematically voting against veteran's rights and benefits his whole career and pissed at the media for not reporting on his record.
He was even more so when I showed him how all the veteran groups have rated McCain.
Funny how the truth wakes people up.
The more people and veterans that know McCain's real record, the better.
October 1st, 2008 at 6:24 pmI'd like to thank "Scaliger" for giving us a nice snapshot of the current state of pro-McCain argument. It ain't pretty, folks. In fact, if "Scaliger" is any measure, all they've got left is a huge, steaming pile of nonsense.
Yes, by all means, let's compare college transcripts and everyone should release their health records. You've got to release your health records to get a job as a fricking security guard for crissakes. That someone has the glaring cluelessness to argue that a 72-year old man with a history of melanoma and four cancer operations under his belt just shows how around the bend they've gone.

October 1st, 2008 at 10:58 pmI guess I am in the minority here. I actually think releasing medical records should only be done on a voluntary basis. This is a slippery slope issue for me. The only jobs I know where you need to show medical records are those in which person literally has another's life in their hands (e.g. pilots). While the Pres. obviously must make sound judgements that affect people's lives and may indirectly lead to death, a stroke, heart attack, etc. is not going to lead to certain death of others. There are also mechanisms to remove a president if their judgement becomes an issue and an explicit procedure for replacing the president. While such a process may exact a toll on the country, I have a hard time imagining how a serious medical condition would result in physical harm to the citizenry.
If we require presidential candidates to disclose their medical records, why shouldn't any employer demand them from job candidates? Shouldn't bankers, stock brokers, judges, lawyers, etc. demonstrate that they have no medical condition that impairs their judgement? What about medical histories of the family? Do we have a right to know if mental disorders run in the family?
McCain is 72 with a history of skin cancer. The average male life expectancy in the US is 75-76. Doesn't that say enough? Doctors can estimate the probability he will survive to a given age, but that doesn't mean he won't live that long or longer. As genetic screening becomes more prominent we are going to be confronted with this type of issue more frequently and with serious consequences. If insurance companies and employers can exclude job candidates based on medical conditions or genetic tendencies, I think that would be a horrible mistake. In my opinion, forcing the President to release records would be a big step in the wrong direction.
Just my $0.02.

Polls: Obama leads in critical trio of states
By LIZ SIDOTI (Associated Press Writer)
From Associated Press
October 01, 2008 6:52 AM EDT
WASHINGTON - Recently trailing or tied, Democrat Barack Obama now leads Republican John McCain in a trio of the most critical, vote-rich states five weeks before the election, according to presidential poll results released Wednesday.
The Democrat's support jumped to 50 percent or above in Ohio, Florida and Pennsylvania in Quinnipiac University surveys taken during the weekend - after the opening presidential debate and during Monday's dramatic stock market plunge as the House rejected a $700 billion financial bailout plan.
Pollsters attributed Obama's improved standing to the public's general approval of his debate performance, antipathy toward GOP vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin and heightened confidence in the Illinois senator's ability to handle the economic crisis.
The fresh polling is the latest troublesome turn for McCain, the Arizona senator who is trying to regain control of the campaign conversation amid increasingly difficult circumstances for Republicans. It comes on the eve of a debate between Palin and her Democratic counterpart, Joe Biden, and as the financial crisis shapes the presidential race in unpredictable ways.
For now and probably for the next month, the race will be entirely about who can best handle an economy in peril.
October 1st, 2008 at 11:57 pmAnd electoral-vote.com says Barack 280-190 over McCain
fivethirtyeight.com says odds are about 5-1 against McCain winning.
