Palin: Our family struggled financially ‘until Todd and I got a couple of good union jobs.’

Last night on his radio show, conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt asked Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) if she and her husband “ever faced tough economic times.” Palin responded saying that her family struggled to get health insurance “until Todd and I both landed a couple of good union jobs.” She said further that she could identify with Americans who are suffering as a result of the economic downturn because her family is “going through that right now — even as we speak.” Listen here:

Palin is right to credit her and her husband’s “good union jobs” with securing her family health insurance coverage. In fact, as SEIU notes, “workers in unions…are 63 percent more likely to have employer-provided health insurance” than non-union workers. Further, “union families pay 43% less for family coverage than nonunion families” and the coverage that union workers receive is “far more comprehensive.” Too bad Palin has done nothing to actually represent union interests.

Palins’ wealth FAR exceeds her Wasilla neighbors’:

    http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2008/sep/30/wealth-makes-palins-no-ordinary-alaskans/

“Their combined income of nearly a quarter-million dollars last year was five times the median household income for Wasilla’s 7,000 residents. They own a single-engine plane, two boats, two personal watercraft and a half-million-dollar, custom-built home on a lake that is worth three times the average of other homes in town.”

  2. unbelievable says:

I guess Sarah hasn’t gotten to the “Unions are bad” talking point in her Republican VP training manual yet….

  3. Crusty Old Bastard says:

  4. Fred says:

Just like all republicans, they take advantage of existing socialist programs while denouncing them as evil.

  5. christopher wiwi says:

Didn`t she represent unions and union worker with a fake pro- union backer or two and their signs, once again America needs to know all about this women and her stands on the issues of which we know nothing. If she is so pro-union why doesn`t she acknowledge them and what they mean to her and her party,ha ha.The only thing we know about her is that she amd the old man will pander to anyone who will listen.

“And I am the Republican Party’s VP candidate. Huh? What contradiction are you talking about?” – Gov. Sarah Palin

  7. paleolib says:

That should go over well with the Republican-voting Chamber of Commerce crowd that is already pissed at the House Republicans for Monday’s vote. I am greatly enjoying watching the unholy alliance between the hedonistic Wall Street millionaires and the rural/suburban fundies unzip.

  8. Taguba says:

Hard to believe that she has no idea what her own party’s platform is on Unions. Never mind, its Sarah palin.

Oh what a show we are going to get on Thursday.

  9. citizen_pain says:

Seems like this is an appropriate time to remember good ‘ole Joe Republican, as Palin (and the rest of them for that matter) seem to fall into that category:

Joe gets up at 6 a.m. and fills his coffeepot with water to prepare his morning coffee. The water is clean and good because some tree-hugging liberal fought for minimum water-quality standards. With his first swallow of water, he takes his daily medication. His medications are safe to take because some stupid commie liberal fought to ensure their safety and that they work as advertised.

All but $10 of his medications are paid for by his employer’s medical plan because some liberal union workers fought their employers for paid medical insurance – now Joe gets it too.

He prepares his morning breakfast, bacon and eggs. Joe’s bacon is safe to eat because some girly-man liberal fought for laws to regulate the meat packing industry.

In the morning shower, Joe reaches for his shampoo. His bottle is properly labeled with each ingredient and its amount in the total contents because some crybaby liberal fought for his right to know what he was putting on his body and how much it contained.

Joe dresses, walks outside and takes a deep breath. The air he breathes is clean because some environmentalist wacko liberal fought for the laws to stop industries from polluting our air.

He walks on the government-provided sidewalk to subway station for his government-subsidized ride to work. It saves him considerable money in parking and transportation fees because some fancy-pants liberal fought for affordable public transportation, which gives everyone the opportunity to be a contributor.

Joe begins his work day. He has a good job with excellent pay, medical benefits, retirement, paid holidays and vacation because some lazy liberal union members fought and died for these working standards. Joe’s employer pays these standards because Joe’s employer doesn’t want his employees to call the union.

If Joe is hurt on the job or becomes unemployed, he’ll get a worker compensation or unemployment check because some stupid liberal didn’t think he should lose his home because of his temporary misfortune.

It is noontime and Joe needs to make a bank deposit so he can pay some bills. Joe’s deposit is federally insured by the FSLIC because some godless liberal wanted to protect Joe’s money from unscrupulous bankers who ruined the banking system before the Great Depression.

Joe has to pay his Fannie Mae-underwritten mortgage and his below-market federal student loan because some elitist liberal decided that Joe and the government would be better off if he was educated and earned more money over his lifetime. Joe also forgets that his in addition to his federally subsidized student loans, he attended a state funded university.

Joe is home from work. He plans to visit his father this evening at his farm home in the country. He gets in his car for the drive. His car is among the safest in the world because some America-hating liberal fought for car safety standards to go along with the tax-payer funded roads.

He arrives at his boyhood home. His was the third generation to live in the house financed by Farmers’ Home Administration because bankers didn’t want to make rural loans.

The house didn’t have electricity until some big-government liberal stuck his nose where it didn’t belong and demanded rural electrification.

He is happy to see his father, who is now retired. His father lives on Social Security and a union pension because some wine-drinking, cheese-eating liberal made sure he could take care of himself so Joe wouldn’t have to.

Joe gets back in his car for the ride home, and turns on a radio talk show. The radio host keeps saying that liberals are bad and conservatives are good. He doesn’t mention that the beloved Republicans have fought against every protection and benefit Joe enjoys throughout his day. Joe agrees: “We don’t need those big-government liberals ruining our lives! After all, I’m a self-made man who believes everyone should take care of themselves, just like I have.”

Fred Says: Just like all republicans, they take advantage of existing socialist programs while denouncing them as evil.

Ah, their “do as say not as I do” ideology… Seems to apply to their sense of morality as well (drugs, affairs, prostitutes, etc.)

My former boss, a teacher turned Principal once denounced socialism from the office of the publically funded school where we worked. I had to bite my lip to keep from laughing at her.

  11. spencers mom says:

Palin was knocked up when she and the First Dud eloped. Wonder if Medicaid paid for Track’s delivery?

    That would be interesting…

    PEACE

  12. misshusseinmolly says:

So Sarah’s “solution” for anybody who’s having difficulty with getting decent health insurance or having to cope with high medical bills is to get a union job?

Well, thanks to her party, getting a union job is harder than ever because there just aren’t that many of them anymore. What other “solutions” does she have?

  13. Tired of being lied to says:

    Jeesh, there she goes again.

Maybe if she read a paper or two she would know that Republicans and unions don’t really get along. Republicans have been undermining and attempting to dismantle unions since forever.

So she credits her survival to one of the things which her party despises.

“Free food?!? I’ll have another helping (even though I hate the cook).”

  14. conniptionfit says:

    Good ol’ Joe!
OT- I have a question, maybe it’s already been answered and I missed it, but–does anybody here know in what way will raising the FDIC insured limit from $100,000 to $250,000 change, well, anything?? Who does it help? How does it make any difference in the bailout crisis?

  15. unbelievable says:

Tired of being lied to Says: Maybe if she read a paper or two

In her Couric interview, when asked which papers she reads, Palin said that she reads ‘all of ‘em’. LOL

I read an article that said that she’s helped Obama more than McCain.

  16. Keith says:

I read somewhere that the Palin family income is about $250,000—so I don’t really sympathize for them.

Reagan used to say that FDR was a hero and saved his family and the country in the 30’s. Funny how there is disconnect with conservatives.

  17. Keith says:

conniptionfit, I know that it’s currently $200,000 for couples and $250,000 for retirees—if anyone was wondering about those.

  18. Michael Lafferty says:

    @14

Adjusting the insurance threshold for individuals is relatively meaningless, but it is being touted as a necessary step to promote the protection of small business asset banking.

Of course, my small business has earned annual gross rates exceeding two million dollars in some years, and probably never had a balance of more than ten thousand dollars in the bank at any time in the seventeen years it has existed. So how meaningful is the proposal? That’s hard to say. But then, Senator McCain might be inclined to support such a change, because it would protect ‘middle class’ account holders: apparently anyone who earns less than three million dollars per year, wasn’t it?

And, why do Republicans hate unions? Or, health care reform? The inconsistencies in Governor Palin’s public remarks are enough to make anyone’s head explode!

  19. Artemis says:

You just can’t buy this sound-byte spouting, cut-off from reality thought from anywhere but the Bullshit Express. Women like myself are so angry with this person who claims to represent them, and Christians are ready to tear down the temple because she dares to act like she is one.

Stone GOP supporters in real life are so angry they are voting AGAINST McCain. That should tell them something, but they keep spouting the party gospel like it is still meaningful in the face of their lies.

  20. McWars says:

I’ve got mine libruls, TO HELL WITH YOU! TIME TO SHUT DOWN THIS PROGRAM ‘CAUSE I’M DONE USING IT!

  21. getplaning says:

Can you imagine the collective gasp from the McCain team when that one came out? They must be thinking of ways to get rid of her by now. Hunting accident? Plane crash? She gets pregnant again?

  22. conniptionfit says:

Thanks Keith. But I’m wondering about the basic issue that everyone, from Obama to McCain to Bair ,and all of the Repub and Dem leadership advocating for this change in response to the Crisis- and particularly as a measure that wasn’t included in the original House bill, but that is expected to sweeten the deal enough to get some of those no votes back on board. My question is: why? I can’t see how this changes anything.

  23. conniptionfit says:

Michael- so it’s just more of the typical repub posturing on supporting “small businesses” without actually doing anything meaningful? But how does this fit in with the fact that the bailout bill is about the BIG businesses that are looking for a hand out? And why was it originally Obama’s idea?

  24. Fred says:

    conniptionfit Says:

You seem to be having a coniptionfit.

  25. ralph the wonder llama says:

    Hmm…

…a female candidate who is anti-feminist…

… a union member who is also a leader of the anti-union Republican Party…

what’s next? Are we going to discover that Sarah, an avid book-burner, is also a librarian?

  26. McWars says:

    Jiff
    Online PRivacy when it Counts

    PLEASE don’t start this again.

  27. MapleStreet says:

I’m confused here. My experience has been that the state repubs tend to write bills that are anti-union.

  28. Leftside Annie says:

And that, my friends, is called “irony.”

    ——————————————————————————–

As you can see, Gov. Palin is not an elitist like Hussein. Also, you Democrats need to stop overly critcizing her. She is quickly learning about our government

Three of the stupidist things I’ve ever heard a human say followed by the rest of your ridiculous claims.

How do you remember to breath?

    excellent post
I will keep a couple of copies of it at my desk to hand to my a$$hat buddies when they say something stupid, ( most of the time they open their mouths )

    thank you

  33. cargod says:

    RR @ 30

    I truly hope that’s snark

    But I suspect it isn’t

  34. Pseudonym says:

The hypocrisy is greater than that. Her running mate wants to TAX THAT EMPLOYER PROVIDED HEALTH INSURANCE AS IF IT WERE INCOME in order to force people out of employer-based and into the open market.

Can you imagine having to shop for health insurance on the open market with a pregnant dependent and a baby with a genetic disease? Good thing she’s a public servant who gets all that great state-provided health insurance now. Just like John McCain who has had government provided health insurance HIS ENTIRE LIFE. But it’s not good enough for the rest of us…..

  35. LibertyLover says:

    RR @ 30 —

Didn’t Jesus clear the house of worship of the moneychangers? And Since The Republicans are the party of Moneychangers… isn’t Sarah P. Sinning against herself and Jesus? I’m just wondering…

  36. lurker says:

Hey raptureturd the Muslims don’t worship idols the
Christians do “Jesus on a stick” ring any bells? I don’t
have anything against Christians because I relies that
that were brainwashed since they were born to “Believe”.
