Senate approves $700 billion economic bailout.

The Senate voted 74-25 tonight to approve a $700 billion plan to stabilize U.S. financial markets. The plan gained additional support with the inclusion of an “increase in Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation coverage of bank deposits, from $100,000 to $250,000, as well as extensions of popular tax credits and a freeze on the expansion of the Alternative Minimum Tax.” The issue now goes back to the House, which failed to pass the bailout on Monday.

UpdateBoth Sens. Obama and McCain voted for the legislation.

The a**holes. I will say this: I've never seen Congress so darned concerned about Main Street. They can make laws so it's easier to ship jobs overseas, but they've just been so gosh-darned worried about the working men and women. I'd like to take them to Main Street in Baghdad and drop them off. After all, most of them voted for the mess there, too.

I can't find the roll call on this, but the 25 who voted "No" to me are real Americans, regardless of party. My congressman, Donald Payne, voted No, and his aide told me to give Pelosi a piece of my mind.

I think we should all vote third party, and send a clear and loud message that we are not getting duped anymore, as you said. There are some "Pie in the sky" people who keep saying, "Who's worse, McCain or Obama?" They both stink. Besides, Progressives have McKinney or Nader, and Conservatives have Bob Barr, who will probably get more votes than McKinney and Nader together. Third party is going to be equally divided, and it is simply time to vote with your conscience instead of this absurd "lesser of two evils"

What happens to the estimated 53 trillion credit (unregulated) credit default swaps out there? We are just throwing gas on a fire.

    <em>Obama Makes McCain Very Uncomfortable

    By David Nather | October 1, 2008 8:40 PM | Permalink | Comments (1)

Let the record reflect that Barack Obama made the approach to John McCain tonight.

As the two shared the Senate floor tonight for the first time since they won their party nominations, Obama stood chatting with Democrats on his side of the aisle, and McCain stood on the Republican side of the aisle.

So Obama crossed over into enemy territory.

He walked over to where McCain was chatting with Republican Sen. Mel Martinez of Florida and Independent Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman of Connecticut. And he stretched out his arm and offered his hand to McCain.

McCain shook it, but with a “go away” look that no one could miss. He tried his best not to even look at Obama.

Finally, with a tight smile, McCain managed a greeting: “Good to see you.”

Obama got the message. He shook hands with Martinez and Lieberman — both of whom greeted him more warmly — and quickly beat a retreat back to the Democratic side.

Personally, I don't see how Obama and Biden had any other choice but a reluctant yes. And there's no guarantee that the bill would have failed had they come out strongly against it. If they had succeeded in stopping the bill, and the economy collapsed further, they would lose by a landslide. Voting with McSpin was the prudent move and takes it out of play.

Er...I think he means anyone who screwed us royally over the telecom immunity...FISA...off-shore drilling....

  26. Another Joe Says:

barfly - obama does not support universal healthcare, actually just has a plan to give money to insurance companies and providers.

He is now talking about endless wars in the middle east. Despite his rhetoric on how he opposed Iraq war, he now talks about keeping us there and starting new ones.

He sold out many of his constituents in Chicago too, but don't take my word for it, hear what they have to say about Obama's Shameful Housing Record in Chicago.

He has already indicated he will start the Social Security bamboozle tour again by promoting the lie that it is in "crisis"

Instead of providing any meaningful leadership or answers to high concentrations of poverty and dysfunctional schools in urban communities with large populations of African Americans, he place the "personal responsibility" card, blaming victems of structural poverty

You call it "pragmatism" - your choice, but don't get up on your high horse and give me that crap that progressives have to support candidates that talk out of both sides of their mouths, don't live by their own rhetoric, and don't support progressive ideas.

Who is really throwing away their vote - people that hold candidates accountable for their actions or those that vote for charlatans.

  27. Another Joe Says:

pete - don't kid yourself, obama did not do this "reluctantly". We won't see change until we hold candidates accountable for their rhetoric.

Pete, I think McStain voted with Obama/Biden, not the other way around. If he could have been convinced that voting against this bill would help him, he would have, so that when the shiit hits, he can say only he had the wisdom and experience to see the best way forward.

With McStain, it's all about him. Nothing he does is designed to help anyone but himself.

  30. pete Says:

It's politics Joe. Nothing is as it seems. What I mean is that his public spin will be a "reluctant yes". And I don't feel betrayed in any way because I knew going in that Obama, who wasn't on my short list at the start of the primaries, is a career opportunist. He's careful, calculating, and noncommittal.

Those traits don't make great reformers but, they do make good managers. And I happen to think that they are important traits in a President who is handed as big a disaster as he will inherit.

  31. pete Says:

Very true Spencers Mom. I just don't think either one would have been wise to vote no and be marked for letting the last scraps of American wealth evaporate.

Don't get me wrong, I don't like the bill any more than the circumstances leading to it's necessity. And there are many people I would rather see running for President. But, at this stage of the campaign, I don't see how either one would be able to justify bucking the herd.

  32. Another Joe Says:

yeah - sure pete - we need rhetoric instead of action... In fact, real action is bad, better to go along with the herd and capitulate to the most unpopular president in US history.

  35. tbone Says:

Well, I don't know enough about the financial world to judge whether or not this was a good move. My gut tells me it is not, but we all know from the past 8 years how that goes. From what I can tell, reasonable people differ in their opinion as to whether this will work. That being the case, I can't come down too hard on either candidate for doing their best with the information at hand.

In response to Brain from Planet Arous, I am curious as to whether you really think Obama is the same as McCain on all issues except abortion and torture? While I recognize that Obama is an imperfect candidate (as ALL of them are), I think we have a far better chance of getting a return of checks and balances, scholarly fair-minded and just SC justices, and less bellicose, more respectful foreign policy if Obama is President. Those things are very important in my mind, and justify my vote. From where I sit, Bush blew any arguments about whether the party of the president in office matters right out the window.

  36. hanshiro Says:

Welcome to the United States of Escher, where if your criticize Obama for not, y'know, doing what he promised or for screwing us up one side and down the other with telecom immunity and FISA, you're labeled a "purist."

There is no "Obama Secret Plan" where he'll get into office by "appearing to" sell us out (simultaneously capturing the magical 'conservative vote block' with his wily subterfuge,) and transform into Captain Justice, smiting the evil republicans and pulling our Constitution out of the flames of 'campaign sacrifice-necessity.'

People been readin' too many comic books. We need to act as if there is no hero to yank us off the railroad tracks, just the same people running around in costumes..pretending.

    40. tbone Says: Hanshiro: I’m not sure if I’m among the comic book readers you allude to, but I have no delusions that Obama is Captain Justice.

My allusion was in response to the cadre of naif followers who republicanize any criticism of Obama by pulling the tired "don't throw out the good 'cuz it isn't perfect," meme. I and others have every justification to call Obama on flip-flopping, lying and screwing us when he, in fact, does.

He blatantly lied about his stance on offshore drilling, FISA and telecom immunity. Lest you think I'm being harsh by using the "L" word, we on the progressive left would do no less if Cranky McGoo did (and does) the same thing...he'd be slapped as the flip-flopping sell-out that he is.

How'd you like those AT&T totebags from the dem convention? Hmmm?

Wrapping the dems in some sort of, "we suck less than republicans" toilet paper isn't exactly the rallying cry I had in mind. Neither is, "We'll sell-out America slower then the conservatives," while blindly handing over a mind-staggering $700 billion dollars to fleecing criminals. Thanks Obama. For nothing.

At least Feingold and Kucinich retained their spines and remembered why they were elected. Unlike the dem nominee.

I would've voted for Kucinich in the primary, but he wasn't on the ballot by the time I got to vote. Although I agree with many of Nader's positions, I am not likely to vote for him. I did that twice already, and while it made me feel good to stand on principles, it didn't feel too good when every principle of the rule of law was being thrown aside by Bush. So, as much as I may disagree with some of Obama's positions, I don't think his behavior as President would be criminal. I am sure Nader or McKinney would be upright people in office as well, but I don't think either will win (whether I vote for them or not). That being the case, I am at least going to try to eliminate the chance of retaining a party in power that I know to be criminals. Am I setting the bar low? Yes, probably, but that is the highest I can put it and expect to get anywhere.

This is one of the things bin Laden has as a central goal of his terrorist ideals, is to destabilize the world economy. But we just lended him and his buddies a big hand with our own self-inflicted wounds. We've worried that they'll kill us with planes and suitcases that our own petty differences and need to support them couldn't be our chief undoing.

Our society is failing because we're self-destructing and everyone else sees it, but we think waving a flag and pouncing on our past glories and proclaiming future greatness is what will heal our present problems. We don't look to solve our problems, only cover them up and pretend they aren't there...left for someone else to take care of later on.

Who has that kind of fake money? Where is this money coming from? What country?

    WTF is going on?

Where is the pre-paperwork about needing that much money, guck what they would do with it afterward.

I'm going to the bank and say gimme me...5 million bucks (amount pulled from air) with no guarantees. I may give you back some, if not all your money. At the very least you will loose some of your money.

  67. Game of Life Says:

How fast can they push for healthcare?

Faster than a speeding scam, more powerful than a repug glare. Look up on the floor. It's a bird, no it's a plain. No it's...No it's superpockets.

So does this mean repugs have enough for their war?

  68. Wayne Says:

    Game of Life Says:

Who has that kind of fake money? Where is this money coming from? What country?

    WTF is going on?

They are just dropping another trillion on the deficit. They will get it back, from you, me, our children, their children and so on..... eventually.

The Corporate tax cuts rather than real breaks for the people getting hurt, so that the Republican House will squeal in joy at more corporate welfare, so they might vote for it stinks, bad.

    The whole thing stinks.

They may lose Democratic House votes with this one though.
    Still might fail.

  69. Wayne Says:

    This is a Bush Bailout.
When they should be impeaching him for a crime.
    The Rape of America

  70. Doc Rock Says:

Reid & Pelosi, Pelosi & Reid--how much less do we need?

  71. barfly Says:

    Max-1 Says:

I’m sorry barfly but I have to take exception with what you’re saying here…
… THE ONLY WASTED VOTE IS A VOTE NOT CAST!

That is if you didn’t mean to imply that the only votes that mean anything are the votes cast for your guy…
… Which of course can lead to extremely UNDEMOCRATIC ends.

Unless that’s what you’re suggesting, but then I’d have to question your patriotism… NO?

Question my patriotism all you like; you don't know me, and if you can construct a strawman from such meager resources as my last post, it is a good try, but not very accurate. Your assertion is a little off: the votes cast for Gore in '00 were wasted votes were they not? And doesn't that fact invalidate your whole assertion?

  72. Dr. Hussein Matt Says:

    Oops

Only 37% of Americans say Palin is qualified to serve as president

  73. the Lone Voice of Reason Says:

Who are the dumbas**es who think she's qualified--the same ones who are responsible for the mess of the bailout?

    I wouldn't doubt it

Who are the dumbas**es who think she’s qualified–the same ones who are responsible for the mess of the bailout?

They are the same idiots that approve of herr dubyah and dead-eye dick cheney

  75. the Lone Voice of Reason Says:

I thought they had just crawled out from under some slimy rock in some abysmal hell hole like the Satan spawn they are.

Really looking forward to tonight's debate-bet Fox says she wins

    idiots that they are

  76. the Lone Voice of Reason Says:

They are already saying tonight's debate moderator cannot be fair to stupid Moose Lips because she's "sidin' with Biden"

More propaganda to sweep the sheeple away

  77. Dr. Hussein Matt Says:

The damage is done. She had proved to America that she is nothing but a lazy fool. McGRampa is finished. The bar is so low for Silly Sarah that all she has to do is blink her eyes and she'll win tonight.

  78. Goldstandard Says:

Maybe I'm wrong, but the last time I checked, it was un-constitutional for our government to bailout public enterprise with tax payer funds. Oh, I forgot. According to the boy king the Constitution is just a piece of paper.

  79. Kay Says:

    a passage from-
"Grand Theft America: Financial Crime of the Century" by Stephen Lendman:

Yet on September 24, the president addressed the nation audaciously. Callously dismissing public pain and anger. Deceitfully stating outright lies. A typical performance. Demanded that Congress give the treasury secretary carte blanche authority over $700 billion to address "a serious financial crisis." Asked taxpayers to pay for corporate fraud. Reward criminals and ignore their crimes. Said nothing about the root cause. The effect on ordinary people, or how Paulson's scheme will help them. Ignored growing public opposition. Large numbers of credible observers believing the proposed solution is worse than the problem. The most honest of them saying it will enrich fraudsters and offer no help for homeowners.

Yet Bush concluded that "democratic capitalism (is the) best system the world has ever devised" in spite of clear evidence that it's broken and corrupted. Exploits people for profit. Enriches the few at the expense of the many. Rewards criminals for their crimes. Protects the rich from beneficial social change.

Ahead of the president's address on September 24, The New York Times showed a rare display of candor in a critical Timothy Egan opinion piece. About "nearly nationalizing the banking system and giving the treasury secretary more power than a king....whose decisions may not be reviewed by any court of law or any administrative agency." He asked readers to remember "where the biggest heist took place, and how Wall Street dragged down the rest of the country once before," referring to the Great Depression but leaving out everything in between.

He stressed, however, "how Wall Street brought down main street," and things have now come full circle. Deregulation unleashed casino capitalism, and bankers made a killing. Now they're in trouble and Bush demands "the biggest bailout in American history....or the world will crumble. He said the a similar thing in the run-up to war" so who can believe him now. Egan quotes a dirt farmer asking why not the same "concerns (for) average Americans." Because "we the people" Bush speaks for are them, not us.

  80. the Lone Voice of Reason Says:

"Kay says--Because “we the people” Bush speaks for are them, not us."

I'd like to be "them" except I'd really like my soul intact

  81. the Lone Voice of Reason Says:

I actually had someone tell me yesterday that they had issues with Obama because of his refusal to wear a flag pin and that fact that he is black (why aren't they focused on the half-white part I don't know)

All you can do is shake your head in puzzled wonderment at the stupidity. Really, there are no words to describe such profound idiocy

  82. Kay Says:

The MO with BushCO have been Lies,Lies,Lies.
We cannot beieve him now. He and his Wall St. buddies, Pentagon Contractos have been raping this country for 8 years. There's practically nothing left. It's going to take at least 4 generations to get this country back. This make me incredibilly angry and sad.

  83. Alejandro Says:

    Biden (D-DE), Yea
    Clinton (D-NY), Yea
    McCain (R-AZ), Yea
    Obama (D-IL), Yea

    YAY?

Here, Obama, let me show you how it's done:
    Feingold (D-WI), Nay
    Was that so hard?

  84. CageyCretin Says:

This junk better NOT pass the House this time, either. Can the neo-cons and Corporate Lords of America completely ruin this country before the year is out? Pass this Wall Street Welfare and that just might be the case. The proper designation of this "plan" is WELFARE, not rescue and not bailout. It is Wall Street Welfare and nothing else. All you so-called conservatives just love some WELFARE, dontcha?

  85. Alejandro Says:

Well, the corporate welfare is bad enough. But, handing the keys to the economy over to a few insiders is really the scary part.

  86. Another Joe Says:

It is a disgrace when on a progressive blog a person gets accused of being a troll because they point out that a candidate on EITHER side says one thing and does another.

Think Progress is a great site - I would say one of the best. I know we don't agree on everything, but this isn't atrios, kos, or c&l where everyone is expected to parrot the same lines and blindly accept the shenanigans.

Obama lied on Friday night and he is spending a lot of money catapulting the lie that somehow selling out to the financial thugs behind dur chimpfurher is "good for main street."

  87. Another Joe Says:

All of our votes are wasted if we do not have free, fair, open, and verifiable elections.

Chimpy did not win in 2000 or 2004. The democrats sat down. "Get over it" is not the answer to election fraud.

Until we reform the system, the only real vote we have that is surely counted is the dollars we spend with the corpocracy that underwrite the major candidates, always favoring repugs.

  88. tarazan Says:

After few days of trying to have a bill to rescue the economy, as they say...the Senate after meeting for so many days behind doors, they came with this bill of 700 billion dollars, which I pray it will work...but the bill to rescue the markets seems to have more pork and tax breaks in it for businesses.
The Senate with the power it has and working with the House should end this prolonged Iraqi war immediatly or in a short period of time...
The war in Iraq alone is costing us about 4.5 billion dollars a week.
    when,
    Saddam is no longer there
No WMDS was found , or still exist in Iraq.
But this administration is doing the opposite, it is pressuring the Iraqis for a long term military plans for our troops to stay in Iraq.
We pay billions on the government debt every month. The 700 billions dollars we do not have...meaning adding more govenrment debt.
Our national Debt Ceiling will be over 10 trillion dollars coming at a time when business conditions are getting worse.
We should egt out of the business of starting financing unnecessary wars.

  89. bs Says:

obama.... like i have always said it's not about change he's the lesser of two evils.

    sen. tester(nay)

    pretty easy obama.....

  90. Brain From Planet Arous Says:

    1. Game of Life Says:
I don’t understand you repugs. If you don’t see a difference between and dems and repugs, then you are a repug.
First you taunt with your silly bs about dems being lemmings or robots.
Now you don’t see a difference bs, classic repug psycho tricks.
Ain’t no f9cking way would dems jeopardize our country with the likes of a chickenhead like plain.
Don’t think too hard about it.

Now Game of Life, I understand you loathe Bush and his administration. I do too. However, as I said, I judge a person by their actions, and not their words. It is a given that Palin is an idiot, and McCain is nuts. Lots of people were expecting Obama is be the next Savior, but his ACTIONS are proving otherwise. If 90% of the American public did not want this Extortion Rescue Bailout Scam, yet Biden and Obama voted for it. He took massive amounts of Telecom money and broke his promise on a filibuster, and went 180 degrees and gave them immunity. He voted to allow offshore drilling. He lied about the Russia-Georgia conflict. To say he is doing these things to prevent the Right Wing from fueling criticism, as hacks Ed Schultz and Ron Kuby say, is beyond ridiculous. He advocates eternal war with Pakistan and Afghanistan, but I will wait to see how he votes on it. Again, actions count. Speaking of actions, did you know that Joe Biden prevented Hans Blix and Scott Ritter from testifying about WMDs in Iraq prior to the occupation? In fact, he was gung ho for that invasion BEFORE George W Bush. But, but, but…..He is a Democrat!!!

What will it take for Obama supporters to see that you are being hoodwinked? What bill will he vote for or against that will make you think twice? How much kissing corporate and Republican butt will it take? What is that straw that breaks the back?

This sounds a lot like Bush, “You are either for Obama, or you are a Republican”. Kind of like, “You are either with us, or with the Terrorists”.

  91. bs Says:

    EXTORTION

  92. Brain From Planet Arous Says:

    EXTORTION

Yep, "You pay up or we breaka you legs (economy)"

  93. Max-1 Says:

    Barfly,
That really depends on your use of the word "WASTED".

Again, I stand by what I say...
Why is voting for third party a wasted vote? How was voting for Gore in 2000, wasted votes?

The process may be flawed with miscounts or rigged or what have you, but the ONLY votes wasted in a Democracy are the ones NOT cast. Now, if we were in a totalitarian society and ONLY allowed to vote for ONE person, then I could see how voting for other people would be considered wasted votes, but if done in protest in that society, Id even argue that they weren't wasted. But America isn't supposed to be a totalitarian society but instead a Democracy, and that the principle I support... YOU?

Why do you consider my vote "WASTED" if I vote third party?

    .

  94. EugeneDebs Says:

    Max-1 Says:

Why do you consider my vote “WASTED” if I vote third party >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

The only vote I WASTE is the one I cast for someone I dont believe in

  95. AlphaMack Says:

The Obamabots over at C&L are comical.

Point out that Obama sold them down the river yet again will get you labeled a Redstate troll.

    Let's see:
    - He voted for FISA.
    - He lied about the Russia/Georgia conflict at the debate (claimed Russia attacked first).
    - He wants more wars (Pakistan).

And now he voted for this garbage.

"But...but who are you going to vote for???"

We have Ralph Nader, Cynthia McKinney, Chuck Baldwin, Bob Barr, and Ron Paul. We can even write in Dennis Kucinich or anyone else we please.

But that's ok; I must be spouting lies and hail from the McPOW camp.

The DOW drop today amounts to economic terrorism: Pass this bill or else we'll tank the market further. Folks, we're screwed either way. If this bill does pass? Think Weimar Republic on a grander scale.
