This afternoon on CNN, Wolf Blitzer replayed a portion of Sen. John McCain’s (R-AZ) speech from Sept. 23 announcing the conditions under which he would support a bailout package. McCain said that a bill with “any kind of earmarks” would be “unacceptable” and “simply cannot happen.” Watch it:
Of course, despite the fact that the bill was loaded with special earmarked tax breaks, McCain voted for it — and then suggested that President Bush should veto the bill because of the “insanity and obscenity” of the pork. Conservative commentator Glenn Beck told Blitzer that with McCain’s vote, “he lost the election.”
Conservative commentator Glenn Beck told Blitzer that with McCain’s vote, “he lost the election.”
Really?
‘Cause I thought he lost it when he picked Sarah Palin as his running mate.
Shows what i know.
October 2nd, 2008 at 5:15 pmWhy should we expect McNutzi to be consistent about anything other than his disdain for anyone who disagrees with him?
OTOH: Wolf Blitzer + Glenn Beck = two good reasons to change the channel.
October 2nd, 2008 at 5:18 pmWell, obviously McCrazy was against earmarks before he was for earmarks after he was against them even before before he was for them again after he was against them before!
Yep.
October 2nd, 2008 at 5:21 pmSo, if Palin surpasses all expectations by stringing together a coherent sentence, the “spectacular success” won’t make a difference on McCain’s chances?
For once, Beck, I hope you’re right. Just once.
October 2nd, 2008 at 5:21 pmAll legit points, but…
OBAMA LIED TOO AND SOLD US OUT AGAIN
Funny how some are quick to jump on mcinsane but obama gets a “free pass”.
October 2nd, 2008 at 5:22 pmSome of the pork is for new NASCAR tracks, and if I heard correctly, the ?Rum? industry.
Well, the Natural-Ice-Drinking-Good-Old-Boys-NASCAR-Fan-Network(IOWs, the base)needs to watch a pack of 45 men burn fossil fuel at a ridiculous rate while they do their Captain Morgan poses.
October 2nd, 2008 at 5:24 pmWho Lied Today?
NASCAR recently announced that NASCAR teams would switch to unleaded racing fuel by the start of the 2008 season. This is a significant development for NASCAR teams as they have long been the target of environmental groups. This change is possible because of a partnership between the Environmental Protection Agency, Sunoco and NASCAR.
Gee, with that kind of “environmental friendly” attitude, nascar is practically a bastion of enlightenment.
But obama voted for all this pork too…
October 2nd, 2008 at 5:26 pmCredit where it’s due?
At least it had been a week. His record as of late has been quite unimpressive; blasting democrats for partisan ship in a speech to express the need for unity.
October 2nd, 2008 at 5:26 pmYou people assume that McCain speaks for the McCain campaign
That’s right……. I said ‘you people’!
/snark
October 2nd, 2008 at 5:27 pmOT, but way too hellaciously funny to pass up:
http://freelevi.org/Real_Time_with_Bill_Maher.html
October 2nd, 2008 at 5:28 pmWhat? The bill had to be juiced. There wasn’t enough stimulation for Corporafornication.
The CorporaWhorehouses on the Washington Mall aim to please…
October 2nd, 2008 at 5:29 pmWhen someone is drowing, you throw something in the water that can help them float until they can be rescued, you don’t worry about whether its the ‘perfect’ lifesaver, just as long as it works long enough. The Bailout/Rescue Bill isn’t perfect, and there are a lot of things in it that people from both sides of the aisle can disagree with, but something had to happen quickly.
Now, that’s not to say that there aren’t issues with the entire bailout to begin with….
October 2nd, 2008 at 5:29 pmAnother Joe Says:
All legit points, but…
OBAMA LIED TOO AND SOLD US OUT AGAIN
You going to offer some evidence there joe, or does the use of bold all-caps font qualify as proof in your world?
October 2nd, 2008 at 5:30 pmThey call him Flipper, Flipper, faster than lightning,
October 2nd, 2008 at 5:32 pmNo-one you see, is smarter than he,
And we know Flipper, lives in a world full of wonder,
Flying there-under, under the sea!
Everyone loves the king of the sea,
Ever so kind and gentle is he,
Tricks he will do when children appear,
And how they laugh when he’s near!
They call him Flipper, Flipper, faster than lightning,
No-one you see, is smarter than he,
And we know Flipper, lives in a world full of wonder,
Flying there-under, under the sea!

I think we have the first “clinton did it” of the Obama presidency. Well done Joe, well done.
October 2nd, 2008 at 5:33 pmnow make yourself famous dipshit.
October 2nd, 2008 at 5:36 pmI was going to make a decisively indecisive clever remark about this lunacy, but Leftside Annie (in #3) beat me to it. If credibility were dollar bills, McNutso couldn’t buy a bowl of soup.
October 2nd, 2008 at 5:37 pmTwo-faced string of expletives.
October 2nd, 2008 at 5:37 pmBob
Did you watch the debate? Have you seen the commercials about “main street”?
Did you hear what he said about pork on Fri?
Hey – have you seen this great service on the tubes? Let’s you find Web pages, videos, even downloadable, printible pdf files.
Check it out – http:///www.google.com
But if you ain’t payin’ attention and can’t check with your favorite newsites or search engines, then I not your monkey.
October 2nd, 2008 at 5:38 pmSounds like dementia praecox!
October 2nd, 2008 at 5:41 pmMcSame doesn’t really have a good grasp of what is going on. The guy is not in control of his mind.
October 2nd, 2008 at 5:41 pmAnother Joe Says:
Concern troll.
October 2nd, 2008 at 5:42 pmMcCancer is a smarmy, condescending, vulgar, creepy, smart a$$, if you are actually voting for this puke then you have very poor judgement of character.
October 2nd, 2008 at 5:44 pmHey joe, I know you’re not my monkey, you’re mccain’s. It’s up to you to support your argument idiot, not mine. idiot.
Hey, how about this, MCCAIN EATS LIVE PUPPIES!!!! it’s up to you to disprove that statement, becuase I used caps and bold font. idiot.
October 2nd, 2008 at 5:44 pmSince Glenn Beck is always wrong that means that McCurmudgeon still has a chance.
October 2nd, 2008 at 5:45 pmanother joe isn’t a concern troll, he’s a monkey troll. I don’t know what debate he watched, but the one I watched had Obama being resonable, thoughtful and throuaghl. It had mccain spouting talkingpoints and glaring fury because he had to share the stage with that “punk”.
October 2nd, 2008 at 5:47 pmSo why can’t you point out when obama sells us out too – didn’t know this was atrios, c&l, or fdl
Oh that’s right, obama may sell out progressive ideas with fisa and corporate bail outs, despite promising filibusters on the former and not bailing out cororations on the latter.
Oh yeah – he is our lying liar…
October 2nd, 2008 at 5:47 pmThe problem with assuming an absolute position, or thrusting such a position on another, is that said position makes it impossible to compromise without looking like a deceitful idiot.
When one compounds the problem by changing absolute positions on a daily basis? One becomes incapable of recognizing the truth when it’s staring one in the face.
October 2nd, 2008 at 5:48 pmMcCurmudgeon’s many votes agains the MLK Jr. holiday, his condescending attitude toward Obama evinced by never looking at him in the debate has me wondering if he is a racist.
October 2nd, 2008 at 5:50 pmsatirev Says:
You know you’re in deep dookey when Glenn Beck throws you to the wolves.
that’s what I was thinking, what’s left pirate klan radio? michelle malkin?
October 2nd, 2008 at 5:51 pmaparently monkeyboy joe isn’t sure about his last post, he didnt’ cap everything. this is his nuanced arugment.
October 2nd, 2008 at 5:53 pm$110 billion in earmarks. Why do we give money to NASCAR and Hollywood? Aren’t they doing fine? They don’t need welfare! Joe, McCain has been constantly saying how the greatest problem domestically was earmarks. It’s called ‘hypocrisy’.
McCain, if the Senate votes NO, that is quicker than the Senate passing it, the prez vetoing it, and then having it come back to the Senate. See?
Instead of the Dems trying to be so dang bipartisan with the Repubs, why don’t they try to accomodate the left side of their party and let the Repubs be blamed if it does not pass. Why do Dems always act like they are in the minority when they are in the majority?
October 2nd, 2008 at 5:53 pmhey joe, monkey want a banana?
October 2nd, 2008 at 5:54 pmpete – is that obama’s excuse or mclames?
October 2nd, 2008 at 5:54 pmWhat’s the matter bob – you can’t provide the “evidence” that you demand from others?
Are you denying that obama proclaimed he would filibuster retro telecom immunity?
Are you denying that Friday night he said no corporate welfare?
Are you denying that he said no more pork?
Are you denying that even up until he capitulated to the most unpopular president in US history on the bailout, he was running ads talkin’ tuff on taking a stand against bailing out corporations?
Are you denying he spews all of the “main street” rhetoric, but that reasonable people can question his actions?
October 2nd, 2008 at 5:55 pmre 38-
October 2nd, 2008 at 5:56 pmyeah, at some point this has to stop. let the rethugs whine they had their chance and they blew it.
Obama is smart enough to know what is and is not capable of passing both houses and being signed by the AWOL in chief.
There’ll be time enough for reapairing this in his first three months.
October 2nd, 2008 at 5:57 pmBeck said last night’s vote cost McCain the election—when he was 150 electoral votes behind BEFORE he voted.
October 2nd, 2008 at 5:57 pmanother joe, proof you can train a monkey to type
October 2nd, 2008 at 5:57 pmIt’s not an excuse. It’s an observation.
October 2nd, 2008 at 5:57 pmWhy do Dems always act like they are in the minority when they are in the majority?
And why do some self-proclaimed progressives shoot snark at those that don’t want to see candidates use us for netroots support and fund raising and then sell us out on everything.
In this case, continuing to capitulate to the most unpopular president in US history?
October 2nd, 2008 at 5:59 pmBob, keyboarding is a psychomotor skill that is learned through careful practice and combinations of different keystrokes.
Eventually the fingers learn their place, first letter by letter, then short word by word, and then short phrases. This is called “chaining”
It is usually taught with careful repetitions of carefully selected text.
Eventually, Bob, one has to learn how to put some thought into what one keys! Of course, I am sure that mommy limits the amount of time you get to spend on the computer each day.
But don’t worry, most here understand that folks like you are learning to crawl before you walk and then perhaps even run.
October 2nd, 2008 at 6:00 pmI agree it is capitulation by the Dems. They should send a progressive bill to Bush and it’s his fault if he vetoes it.
October 2nd, 2008 at 6:02 pmKeith – problem is that they are not really progressive. They expect our support and beg for our money. They ran on “accountability” in 2004 and then proclaimed impeachment was “off the table.”
The investigations have all been shames and when people refuse to show up when subpoenaed, they get free passes. They even stood down when Don Siegelman, one of their own, was railroaded into prison by a partisan justice department.
Oh yeah, after the friday news dump, conyers sends nasty letters.
And this is all for the most unpopular president in US history.
October 2nd, 2008 at 6:07 pmoops, meant to put this upstairs…
October 2nd, 2008 at 6:11 pmIf you think this is hypocrisy to the extreme, check out what the RNC is pullin’ in Milwaukee”
An official with the Republican National Committee said today a group involved with voter registration drives in Milwaukee is “engaged in systematic fraud and attempts to undermine our electoral system.”
The comments came from Sean Cairncross, the party’s chief lawyer, during a conference call with reporters in the wake of a report that the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now had hired at least seven felons as voter registration workers in the city.
The Journal Sentinel has reported extensively on problems with voter registration cards submitted to the city by workers for the group and another liberal group, the Community Voters Project.
The newspaper reported on similar registration problems in 2004, which led to charges against some voter registration workers, as well as state reforms that bar groups from paying workers based on the number of signatures collected.
So far this year, Milwaukee election officials have referred 49 cases of people who submitted potentially fraudulent registration cards to the Milwaukee County district attorney’s office. In some cases, the groups flagged the problems for the city.
On Monday, a 21-year-old Community Voters Project worker became the first charged in the matter. Authorities say they expect more charges but note in some cases cited by the city that charges will not be filed.
In a statement, state Democratic Party chairman Joe Wineke accused Republicans of “fabricating stories about widespread voter fraud in attempts to scare voters and divert attention away from the financial crisis that marks the final verdict on the disastrous Bush-McCain economic policies.”
From the party that stole 2 presidential election, has ushered in unverifiable black-box voting, and continues to illegal strike HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of legal voters off the rolls in OH alone.
October 2nd, 2008 at 6:11 pmAnother observation is that Sen. Obama is a careful, cautious, thoughtful speaker, candidate, and legislator. And I certainly haven’t heard him take such absolute positions as have been claimed.
Perhaps Joe is upset because Sen. Obama doesn’t match his fantasies? That’s one of the worst things in the world, finding out that someone is more complicated than one’s understanding.
And, for the record. I’m not a “liberal”, “progressive” or member of any party or movement. I identify myself as “independent” or “the opposition” depending on who’s asking. So, if you are looking to get a feeling of betrayal from me? It ain’t gonna work.
And I don’t mind Sen. Obama bowing to political necessity in the least. His job is to get elected and that’s not possible without getting dirty. 20 or so years ago I could manage some outrage about political give-n-take but now I welcome a return from Bushco’s divide and smash tactics.
Heck! One could view the action on the bailout as a return to “normal” bipartisan relations. It’s just been so long that we’ve forgotten what it looks like. As unpopular as the bill is, I find it refreshing that the Senate managed to function at all.
October 2nd, 2008 at 6:12 pmpete – you are either lying or not paying attention. Here is just one example, he has proclaimed he will do things and immediately capitulated to the most unpopular president in US history:
October 2nd, 2008 at 6:13 pmYup, great thing, pete, when the reach across the aisle and agree to give the criminal cabal behind dur chimpfurher a blank check for up to a trillion or more dollars….
So great they work together.

October 2nd, 2008 at 6:21 pmKinda like when LA State Rep. John LaBruzzo advised the governor to veto for legislative pay raises that he himself voted for. It’s so refreshing when Republicans are open-minded enough to take both sides of an issue simultaneously.
October 2nd, 2008 at 6:25 pmI’m neither unobservant nor dishonest you simple tit. I just have a different outlook than you. Perhaps you would be better off at a site populated by people as ignorant and narrow-minded as yourself?
Either way, if I’m talking to you, I’ll address you. If not? You may assume my thoughts were meant for those who can actually understand a diverse viewpoint.
October 2nd, 2008 at 6:34 pmI’m gonna laugh when Obama wins the election, and the trolls show up here and elsewhere claiming that McCain/Palin really won.
October 2nd, 2008 at 6:35 pmI see that Another Joe isn’t a concern troll, he is an RNC-trained troll. The strategy is clear: try to divide and confuse Democrats, or outright scare them away from the polls. With the 23%er voting bloc sewn up, Rove’s team still hopes they can win a slim majority.
October 2nd, 2008 at 6:38 pmI do believe that Another Joe and a lot of others are now realizing the folly of having allowed the Bush administration to usurp powers to the executive branch.
I expect the Obama administration along with Democratic majorities in the House and Senate to rescind and repeal many of the Bush administration’s actions to return the rule of law to government, including prosecution of those that so flagrantly misused their positions that got the country in the mess it is now wallowing in.
In other words, they are scared!
October 2nd, 2008 at 6:46 pmThat’s why I enjoy opportunities to tell them I’m not a Democrat, VerbalKint. Their poor little authoritarian minds can’t seem to get over the fact that I agree that the GOP needs to be dismantled but have no great love for, or expectations of, the Democrats.
October 2nd, 2008 at 6:46 pmMcCain – this is unacceptable but I will still vote for it.
October 2nd, 2008 at 7:10 pmSaint Augustine – you don’t get it at all.
Reasonable people can disagree on what it means to be progressive, but it certainly does NOT mean:
*Throwing out the bill or rights and the 4th ammendment
*Paying off the wealthy and the corpocracy while letting middle class and average Americans lose their houses.
Some find the rhetoric that implies change and even some progressive ideals offensive because it is not backed by action.
In other words – our money is good enough for them, they know we are a significant voting block, often representing the majority of the nation.
They say what they need to say and then continue to support the same folks that brought us dur chinmpfurher.
And folks like you want to dump on anyone that says that we need to hold ALL politicians accountable for their public proclamations.
Do you use the same handle at atrios, fdl, c&l, carpet bagger, or any of the other faux progressive blogs?
October 2nd, 2008 at 7:19 pmJoe: You are certainly bouncing all over the political spectrum here. What I’m saying is that Obama is smart enough to know the battles that must be fought to win this election and the battles that must be avoided in order to win the election.
I believe that once he is in office he will use his powers, in conjunction with a Democratic Congress to rescind, repeal or rewrite the laws to conform with the Constitution.
However, I do like to think of how scared those who are on their out must be now, now that they realize their permanent majority is not to be despite all their illegal activities to get there. It makes me think that those on the right are really stupid to have blown their chance of the Fourth Reich.
October 2nd, 2008 at 7:34 pm@AnotherJoe:
Even if I concede all of your points, a candidate cannot meet every expectation of every citizen of this country let alone his party. Everyone has shortcomings. Unfortunately there is a game that has to be played. Given all of that, I am infinitely more confident in Senator Obama’s capability to lead the country, all things being considered.
October 2nd, 2008 at 8:43 pmSaint Augustine, no I am not – you are reading into things what you want. Just like you are reading into obama’s motives. You cannot possibly be in a position to make proclamations like that.
But whatever – after a chronic and pathetic liar/dry drunk (maybe active alcoholic), I am not willing to blindly support anyone that consistently sells out real progressive ideals.
Maybe you are – but you are kidding yourself if you think you have any meaningful insight as to whether or not these are political compromises or represent what obama really stands for.
In fact, you are flat out wrong.
