McCain jokes: ‘I’m not a rich man.’

This morning on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, Sen. John McCain talked baseball with Joe Scarborough. Scarborough, calling McCain a “gambling man,” asked which baseball team would make it to the World Series. McCain said the Dodgers have potential, jokingly adding, “But that shows why I’m not a rich man”:

I think the Dodgers are not to be underestimated given the fact that they’ve got some pretty strong pitching. So I think it’s very possible that both of those teams, both the Dodgers and Red Sox, could surprise everybody. But that shows why I’m not a rich man. (Laughter)

Watch it:

Of course, McCain — who owns roughly eight homes and 13 cars — has always had a bizarre definition of rich. When Pastor Rick Warren asked him to “define rich,” McCain responded with a joke, asking, “How about $5 million?” In August, McCain said he defines rich “in other ways beside income.” He added that some people “are poor if they’re billionaires.”

Digg It!

In spirit, he’s one of the poorest on the planet.

  2. VerbalKint says:

“Hell, I’m not rich. Quick, look over there!”

  3. hussein toasterhead says:

Why is it that I first read that title as McCain jokes: ‘I’m not a smart man’ in a Forrest Gump voice?

  4. Zooey says:

He added that some people “are poor if they’re billionaires.”

Looking at it like that, McCain is poverty stricken.

  5. stefan says:

Well, considering he’s gambled away his soul, by that definition of wealth he’d be poor indeed.

    _______

This is exactly what I’ve heard patronizing rich people say when they encounter people surviving under crushing poverty. “Oh, those kids with no shoes playing soccer with a rusty can may not have money or food or clothing, but look how happy they are!”

    Disgusting.

  9. JimboSlice says:

When he says “my diamondbacks” he ain’t kidding, his wife owns a stake in the Arizona Diamondbacks … yeah, he’s not a rich man ahahhaahahahha

  10. RUCerious says:

On my Christmas wish list is for Cindy to dump his ass. It’d take him about a month to wind up in the gutter.

  11. Keith says:

I like the Dodgers, but don’t they have the worst record in the playoffs at 51%?

John, you know your married-into and inherited wealth makes the voters think you are out of touch with their problems. That’s why you refuse to say how many homes you have, what car you drive, or release Cindy’s finances.

  12. larkohio says:

He’s not funny. He is so out of touch with the way most Americans live that he cannot even fathom what we go through.
I doubt if he is worried about his heating bills this winter.

  13. A Patriot Acting says:

He has more knowledge when discussing baseball than he does when discussing foreign affairs and the financial crisis. TURN OFF ESPN AND READ THE FRONT END OF A NEWSPAPER ONCE IN A WHILE JOHNNY! WHEN YOU’RE FINISHED, LEAVE IT IN THE MCCRAPPER FOR SARAH! Yeah lurker, his wife IS rich. So he’s just a welfare case traveling on Cyndy’s private jet wearing $500 shoes, huh?

This is on Cindy’s side; but, wasn’t his grandfather on his mother’s side quite a gambler and rascal in Oklahoma?

    Birds of a feather…

  16. Zimzone says:

I think, in context, he meant he wasn’t rich due to gambling.

America, let’s keep this man poor. He’s gambling on winning this election by any means necessary, including ‘breaking the bank’.

Go back to the casino, McPalin, you’re money’s no good here.

  17. Marie says:

In terms of financial wealth, McCain’s statement is ludicrous on its face – as Americans are seeing their savings, their pensions, their jobs and their futures evaporate – his statement moves to another level of disconnect and disinterest.
In general terms, McCain is right – he is not a rich man; he has no integrity, no honesty, no principles, no morality, no ethic code — he has compromised, traded, sold and otherwise abandoned any semblance of human traits that make up an authentic and compassionate being.

  18. Kay says:

McWorse is right: He is not a rich man. He is poor in spirit.
    He is poor in self-awareness.

It’s gonna be a horrible day when he meets his maker.

He’s already there, has been for a while.

  20. stewarjt says:

Why is this guy always joking about serious topics? E.g., Bomb, bomb, bomb; dictatorships; rape.

  21. Keith H. says:

    Right on Marie.

This government has allowed our country to be so owned and controlled by corporate interest that unless that problem is somehow reined in, you may as well forget about anything improving until we take to the streets, in a very angry with nothing to lose kind of way.

  26. ralph the wonder llama says:

I think lurker got it right.

McCain’s not rich; his wife is. He’s a kept man, as the righties used to say about John Kerry (the REAL John Kerry, not the Troll John Kerry.)

  27. unbelievable says:

Do you think the parts of his medical records that he won’t release include some form of dementia?

Clearly the guy is losing touch with reality, and not just in the normal Republican sort of way…

This was really the best the Republicans could do? Really?

  30. Leftside Annie says:

    Well, isn’t that just …special?

That arrogant POS asshat should try living in my 600sq ft apartment and scrounging for money at the end of every pay period – and then let’s see how he defines “rich.”

    *grumble, grumble*

  31. Leftside Annie says:

    He’s not a “rich man”…?

Well, he ain’t a smart man, either.

  32. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

How rich John McCain is depends on how his prenup with Cindy was worded. But, even if she kept everything she owned before she married him, anything they have earned since they were married is half his since Arizona is a community property state.

That brings up an interesting question. What if they moved to a state that did not have community property laws? Which state would apply to a divorce?

I really do wish that the MSM would print stuff like this. It would really show the people on Main Street who and what McCain is all about. Unfortunately things like this will only be known to anyone who watched that particular show and people on blogs.

McCain’s not rich; his wife is. He’s a kept man, as the righties used to say about John Kerry (the REAL John Kerry, not the Troll John Kerry.)

Actually that’s not true. Anything they have earned or purchased since they got married is community property. So, at this point McCain is a very rich man even though most of his riches are due to his Sugar Mama.

  34. SP Biloxi says:

“McCain jokes: ‘I’m not a rich man.’”

And Gramps got that part right. He is not a rich man. But, he married into wealth. Thurston McCain III is a well kept man all brought and paid for by his Sugarmama wife, Lovey Cindy.

  35. squidbilly says:

Somebody should tell Johnny Mac that his jokes are really bad and come off extremely poorly. The guy doesn’t seem to have a sense of humor.

He shouldn’t speak like that in public!!!???

    Keep it up!!!
