Barnes: ‘I don’t care about mental health parity.’

Included in the massive $700 billion bailout bill Congress passed and President Bush signed today is a bipartisan mental health parity provision that gives employees the same treatment rights for mental illness as for other physical ailments. “Congress has given hope to the millions of Americans and their families who live with mental illness,” said Sen. Chris Dodd (D-CT). But last night on Fox News, the Weekly Standard’s Fred Barnes coldly dismissed the measure, saying “it doesn’t belong” in the bill:

BARNES: I don’t care about the mental health parity, and some of the other things that don’t belong in there. On the other hand, we have a crisis, and we need to do something.

    Conservatives are mentally ill.

Fred Barnes and FOX is proof. Denial is a sure symptom.

  5. paleolib says:

Fred’s mental imbalance is the only reason Fox “News” pays him to appear on the air.

  6. McWars says:

Fred’s insurance company will contact him with the great news: You’re covered!

My youngest daughter has mental health issues and we are so thankful that her employeer allows her to take leave for her extended treatments. One of the many tradegies of mental illness is that most people do not realize that it’s causes are physical in nature making it no different than any other illness. So F you Fred.

    That’s worth a repeat, samsuncle.

The social stigma against mental illness is abhorrent. No one condemns or shuns someone with cancer or a broken leg.

  9. gummitch says:

Oregon passed a law like this that went into effect last January. It was long overdue.

Fred Barnes could just as easily have said, “I don’t care about poor people, or sick people or any people but MY people, and we’re all too wealthy to give a damn about the rest of you.”

  10. Doc Rock says:

Barnes doesn’t need mental health care, he’s just dumb. Never showed a flash of brilliance–just a foot soldier inthe Conservative army of spin merchants.

Because most everyone assumes the stereotype and believes that a ‘crazy’ person will pull out a machete will start hacking away at them. This country is so full of indifferent, chickenshit morons.

  12. Count Istvan says:

Conservatives do not want to cure mental health. That would erode their fan base.

Barnes is a detestable little rat, but the Pelosi-Reid response to Bush’s ultimatum of destroying the world if the United States failed to give him $1 trillion in small bills, was not to stand up on their hind legs and for once in their truly worthless lives defy the odious little dictator, but rather to add a few riders and then disgustingly champion bush’s extortion as essential to the survival of the country and without which a catastrophe of biblical proportions will befall us. Absolutely no justification for any bailout has been given other than pure fear-mongering since bush made his original threat. Pelosi, Reid, Obama and all the dem leadership have simply reiterated bush’s threats. It’s insane. I applaud those dems and repubs who stood up to the madness and actually listened to their constituents instead of dear leader, the wall street fat cats, or their party ‘leadership’. Pelosi is garbage. And those dems who circle the wagons around this utterly gutless and corrupt leader are to be spit upon.

Barnes, do you think being schizophrenic, constantly hearing voices, and having hallucinations is not as bad as a sore throat? Or do you think such people are just faking it?

In every other developed country in the world, mental/behavorial, dental, and optometric are always covered. And they spend one-half or less per capita what we spend—including the 47 million Americans who spend zero.
