Palin Says She Will Seek Some Authority Over Legislative And Judicial Branches (Updated)

UPDATE: The Fox News transcript misquoted Gov. Palin. In the video of the interview, she actually said, “we won’t be bleeding our authority.” We apologize for the mistake.

During the vice presidential debate last night, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin said that she agreed with Vice President Cheney’s belief that there is “a lot of flexibility” in the Office of the Vice President and that she was “thankful the Constitution would allow a bit more authority given to the vice president.” Watch it:

In an interview with Fox News’ Carl Cameron this morning, Palin attempted to explain what she meant about “the flexibility of the vice presidency.” “The vice president, of course, is not a member — or a part of the legislative branch, except to oversee the Senate,” said Palin. “That alone provides a tremendous amount of flexibility and authority if that vice president so chose to use it.”

She then claimed that she did not intend on “bleeding” her “authority over to the Legislative or Judicial branch” in order to push McCain’s agenda:

CAMERON: Would you change any of that, (INAUDIBLE) than the Bush/Cheney administration in terms of the power of the executive?

PALIN: Well, again, as I tried to explain last night, our executive branch will know what our job is. We have the three very distinct branches of government. You know, we might won’t be bleeding our authority over to the Legislative or Judicial branch to do our job in the Executive branch as administers.

Palin’s fuzzy answers on the power of the Office of the Vice President do not inspire confidence, considering that she has a record of Cheney-like secrecy and has refused to say whether her office will legally be part of the Executive branch. As the LA Times’ Jim Newton notes, Article 2, Section 1 of “the Constitution makes it clear to most scholars that the vice president is part of the executive branch.”

Palin’s views of the office appear to be so in line with Cheney’s that during her interview with Katie Couric, the only bad thing that Palin could say Cheney had done in office was accidentally shooting his friend in the face.

The cockroaches behind the scenes dig these people up that are such narcissists and sociopaths, that they will allow themselves to be controlled just for the appearance of power. And she couldn’t even get that right. She called it a “duck-hunting accident”, when it was quail he claimed to be shooting. She never mentioned the fact that he had been drinking, that he had his friend go out to the press and lie about the fact that he had been drinking, that he refused to cooperate with the local police later that night when they wanted to question him, and that he didn’t even tell Bush (his alleged “boss”) until the next day.

You know, we all bring different strengths ‘to the table.’ Try as I might, however, I cannot fathom what she brings. Honestly.

This morning, in a debate followup interview with infamous ‘partisan hack cum journalist’ Carl Cameron of FOX News, she blathered on about the role of the administrative branch versus the legislative and judicial branches. And, at one point stated that she and Senator McCain would do their “…jobs in the executive branch as adminsters.” I swear she said that: not administRATORS!

Dumb as a box of rocks. I mean, seriously – what else can you term her breathtakingly shallow command of any subject? Of the English language? This, a journalism graduate?

She went on to babble about Senator Obama claiming that we “…air-raided villages” in Afghanistan. Dear God: she is shallow, simplistic and stupid.

  22. Another Joe says:

BuckarooBanzai – but does that have to be done by getting the folks like chimpy, cheney, mclame, and palin out of the picture by defeating them at the poll or do we actually need to start a dialog and peaceful organized action (probably boycotts) against the economic/political interests that put these buffoons in front of us.

And what about obama – chimpy is signing his bailout today and I don’t see how “main street” got anything out of this.

The most unpopular president in US history has steamrolled the dems on retro telecom immunity (essentially eliminating the 4th ammendment) and now on the bailout.

Will electing obama in any way “cleanse”?

  24. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

    Buckie Boy Says:
    Can you say Dictatoris?

Obama really does need to run an ad with Bush saying what he said about being a dictator and then morph into McCain and what he said in his interview at the Register the other day about being a dictator. Then end with McCain = Bush and ask “is this what you want”.

Besides, I thought that the constitution gave the VP the ability to break a tie and no other powers to the VP.

  25. Another Joe says:

“This person” doesn’t have to read the constitution. This is not about what they do or do not read. This is not about whether they are “competent” or not. This isn’t even about if they are honest.

This is about how our democracy is being stolen and people are talking about the circus instead of the real criminals.

  26. Michael Lafferty says:

Earlier, I sought the wise counsel of the dictionary, as I searched through it looking for the face of Governor Palin.

I expected to find it adjacent to the term vapid, but alas, it was not there. Instead, I actually found it next to the term stupid.

    As defined, stupid is…

    1. Slow to learn or understand; obtuse
    2. Tending to make poor decisions or careless mistakes
    3. Marked by a lack of intelligence or care; foolish or careless
    4. Dazed, stunned, or stupefied
    5. Pointless; worthless

Feel free to pick your favorite label. They all strike me as a good fit.

  27. Another Joe says:

and obama led the way – someone will soon post that he is just caputulating to the criminality so he can then become a progressive candidate and lead change.

Not a rational argument when the public overwhelmingly DID NOT support retro immunity nor this bailout.

And some think that “progressives” have to send him money and give him unquestioning support so that they can continue to believe their fairy tale.

  28. Wayne says:

Palin: We have the three very distinct branches of government. You know, we might be bleeding our authority over to the Legislative or Judicial branch to do our job in the Executive branch as administers.

The only thing bleeding are the ears of rational people who happened to listen to this blathering idiot string this nonsense together in a sentence.

She is was trying to sound smarter than her low level of intelligence will allow and it comes off as so stupid, it hurts.

  29. Bob says:

This is the most important thing to come up with regard to Palin.

I don’t think she was joking when she said she didn’t know what the VP did, but, whether or not that is true, her role model would be cheney. The difference, I believe, is that cheney knew what he was doing, but she won’t. She may have an agenda, but she doesn’t have the experience to be able to use the office as cheney did.

This is the fundamental reason republicans must not retain the Office of the President. Exactly the reason cheney should have been impeached: abuse of power. He clearly crossed the line umerous times and we cannot continue to expand powers of any office.

  30. Another Joe says:

Chocolate Jesus – fewer people believe that then you think, though it is a meme that gets hammered over and over again in the MSM.

In reality, most Americans are against chimpy/obama’s bailout, retro immunity, unitary exectuives, and the war in Iraq.

Most want universal healthcare and support Social Security.

The real myth is that the politicians somehow represent us and that we can elect a different group of fools and not change the underlying special interests and criminal cabal that brought us dur chimpfurher via 2 stolen elections.

  31. Another Joe says:

wayne, her intelligence has nothing to do with this – she is in the position she is in because she can stand in front of the cameras and be the public face of a criminal cabal that knows they have to be very quiet when they steal.

  32. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

    Another Joe Says:
The most unpopular president in US history has steamrolled the dems on retro telecom immunity (essentially eliminating the 4th ammendment) and now on the bailout.

So Another Joe, what would you have had Obama do? There really was no choice here. The Republicans would not have gone along with anything that the Democrats wanted to do, so this bailout was the only option. Should we have just sat back and watched our economy tank completely and see millions of Americans lose their 401K’s and maybe even their job.

Obama is trying to keep the economy from crashing completely so when he takes over he will have something to work with. He has already said that it is now time to do something for the homeowners so they can keep their homes.

I am GD sick and tired of hearing you all b i t c h about this bailout and the fact that Obama supported it. And yet not one of you can come up with an alternative that Obama could have taken and made work.

more palin ignorance – just heard on rachel/AAR:

CONTEXT MATTERS…. In her closing statement last night, Palin relied on a pleasant sounding quote from Reagan:

“It was Ronald Reagan who said that freedom is always just one generation away from extinction.[...]”

Jonathan Chait noted the context of Reagan’s quote.

In fact, Reagan was not warning about a general lack of vigilance about freedom, he was warning what would happen if Medicare was enacted.

To think that any thinking individual could even consider her, or McCain for pimping (and that is EXACTLY what he is doing) her for public office is down-right frightening. @ 37:

Speaking of FOX and [American] Idol…

Last night, following the debate, I accepted NBC’s invitation to text the identity of the perceived winner of the debate to them. I swear, I have never done anything like that before, and have never spent a moment watching anything so dumb as American Idol. Or, any beauty pagent or awards show. But, I digress…

Interestingly enough, I received a response today, which said:

    “…here are the results:
Which candidate helped their ticket the most?
    77% Biden
    23% Palin”

Obviously, it’s not the least bit scientific. I don’t really know how accurate a measure of viewer and voter attitudes those values are. But, the split surprised me. For an electorate supposedly struggling to make up its mind, and poised to deliver a near statistical tie a month from now, the gap express in those numbers is huge.

Senators Obama and Biden take it. I’m just sayin’…

He continued: “She did a magnificent job. She’s the news for the big-spending, smooth-talking, me-first, country-second crowd in Washington and Wall Street. We’ve got a message, we’ve got a message, Sarah Palin and I: Change is coming. … They’re not going to like it, my friends.”

She couldn’t think of way out of a wet paper bag. Jeez…U Betcha…dog gone it…how the heck du u get out of this gosh darn thingee.

Dealing with Putin…”Gosh darn Putin…you gotta stop that warring with Georgia…those southerners don’t like that!”
