Fox News: Palin Won VP Debate Because She Had A Bigger Flag Pin

This morning, the hosts of Fox and Friends discussed last night’s vice presidential debate, concluding that Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) was the “big winner.” As evidence, they said that she looked “relaxed.” “You saw somebody who was talking to you like she was just sitting at the kitchen table,” concluded Gretchen Carlson. “She seemed to want to be there,” said Brian Kilmeade, before adding that “Joe Biden did well.”

Steve Doocy then jumped in by pointing out the fact that although both Biden and Palin were wearing flag pins, Palin’s was “about three times the size of his.” “So I would say flag-pin wise, she is a hands-down winner,” said Doocy. Carlson noted that her pin had “a few more jewels” too. Watch it:

Although Fox and Friends may have been trying to imply that the greater the size of the pin, the greater one’s patriotism, the real reason Palin’s pin was big and sparkly is because she was wearing a brooch. They are often ornamented with gemstones and more typically worn by women, explaining why Biden did not wear the same item.

Additionally, during the first presidential debate, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) wasn’t wearing a flag pin at all, whereas Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) was:

Of course the day after that debate, Fox and Friends never declared Obama the “hands-down winner,” nor did they note the absence of McCain’s flag pin. In the past, Doocy has attacked Obama for “kick[ing] his American flag pin to the curb.” (HT: Raw Replay)

Transcript:

DOOCY: There is a clear winner this morning and it is completely subjective. Take a look. We’ve got a side by side comparison. Examine the flag pins. Joe Biden had a flag pin. Sarah Palin had a flag pin. As you can see, hers is screen right. His is screen left. Hers is about three times the size of his. So I would say flag-pin wise, she is a hands-down winner.

CARLSON: She has a few more jewels on hers, too.

DOOCY: Yes, she does.

And Steve Doocy is an idiot who likely struggles to spell his own name. There's also that.

  2. darladooner Says:

"let's do a side-by-side with obama and mccain.....OOPS, i guess mccain doesn't have one.....oh well....i guess obama won that one..."

  3. dbadass Says:

I think not. I don't know what it is but she has something over the flag. Nothing is ever to be flown above the Stars and Stripe thus she loses big time on the failure to comprehend the rules

  4. Abu Ben Hussein Leporello Says:

Attention, Faux Nooze, the Alaskan flag pin is above the American flag pin. That's a Really, Really big No-No, unless she's still backing Alaska seceding from the Union.
    Will November 4th Never arrive?
Impeach Pelosi, Cheney and Bush and Save the Constitution!

  5. JBaddo Says:

THROW THE F**KING FLAG PINS OUT !!!! WOULD YOU CONCENTRATE ON THE PROBLEMS THAT UNLESS ACTED ON WILL MAKE THE STARS AND STRIPES DISAPPEAR.

  6. mk3872 Says:

They said she looked "relaxed"? Really? Did anyone else notice how thrown-off she was after Biden was choked-up talking about his family tragedy? Or when she tried to talk about McCain's "maverick" credentials? I won't argue that she recited her lines well. But she did not appear relaxed. And yes, she hands-down wins the flag trophy!

  7. MCMetal Says:

“You saw somebody who was talking to you like she was just sitting at the kitchen table,” concluded Gretchen Carlson.

So does my mother and different ladies I've dated ; doesn't mean any of them can or should be VP , dummy.....

  8. Zooey Says:

    This is absolutely ridiculous.

  9. ralph the wonder llama Says:

Damn! I was going to point out that technically sarah 'Cuda was wearing a flag brooch, but TP took care of that already.

  10. Bob Says:

I was wondering before the debate how they would justify her 'win'. I'm still amazed how relentless her defenders, supporters, and surrogates are, but I guess you can't waver and leave room for reasonable doubt.

  11. notanumber Says:

I am looking forward to Flavor Flav type rappers wearing some major billboard type flag bling very soon. Flags as big as his clock!

  12. dbadass Says:

What is that friggin' thing being flown above my flag!! Is she some sort of commie?

  13. RUCerious Says:

WTF? Could faux find a more ridiculous standard to judge on?

    Prolly naught.

  14. spillersgirl Says:

OMG -- great stuff for SNL. This is a new low for the news!

  15. RUCerious Says:

Was her pin made of genuine jeweled moose antler?

    Inquiring minds...

    Could care less.

  16. Count Istvan Says:

And Steve Doocy is an idiot who likely struggles to spell his own name. There’s also that.

And yet with Kilmeade in the same room he may not be the dumbest man on set.

If AK doesn't want her back, perhaps she should get a job with Fox. Perfect fit!

She winked and said you betcha and a shout out to Todd....WHOA what a tool!

  20. McWars Says:

Gwen Ifill didn't end up in the tank for Obama, but Faux News has always been in the tank for stupidity.

  21. had enough Says:

    can still vote on time.com:

    Who won the vice-presidential debate?

    86% Joe Biden

    14% Sarah Palin

    Total: 19772

Very interesting 'View Results by Region' as Palin did not carry one state, not even Alaska.

  22. dasm Says:

And the fact that McCain didn't wear any flag pin??
Does that mean he's disqualified from running for president? You'd think so, according to this crap.

  23. Bob Says:

She didn't win because there was no bathing suit or evening gown segment, and that's what really counts in those things she's qualified for.

  24. dasm Says:

Fox "news" could not be more pathetic & off-base if they btried. They are such losers. They have no substance whatsoever. It's all tripe.

  25. McWars Says:

Oh Looky Doocy, Bush quickly signed the No Fascist Left Behind Act. Don't worry, no unfunded mandates - $700 billion is included.

  26. konchster Says:

The fact that this group fans of limpbizkit is still worrying the flag pin thing is amazing Palin proved herself a really good reader and she hammered those frequently read talking points Personally I was convinced that valley girl plays bad in Alaska Wink Wink

  27. Nat Says:

She didn't look relaxed; she looked rehearsed. She stuck to talking points and rarely answered a question.

  28. fletc3her Says:

I just want to know why John McCain hates America so much he won't wear a lapel pin.

  34. galmud Says:

Steve Idioocy is right. Palin won with her supersized display of American patriotism. Why didnt Obama pick Captain America instead?

  35. Ralphbama Says:

This clip better appear in the Daily Show with Jon Stewart.

Last time Doocy said something idiotic was when he claimed that Palin had foreign policy experience because Alaska is close to Russia. Jon coughed "You're a moron"

Better ready more cough drops for Stewart.

It should also appear in the Colbert Report, too.

  36. DallasNE Says:

For about the first 3 days after the Palin's were introduced to the public they all wore the flag pin incorrectly in the right lapel rather than in the left lapel. My guess is that if you looked at old photos you would find that Sarah Palin never wore a flag lapel pin.

  37. pete Says:

Aside from FAUX, Drudge, and other haunts of the insane, Biden out-polled Bible Spice by 15% to 80%. If it had been the park league softball game she's qualified for? It would have been stopped when Biden shoved her "Mavericks" down her throat if not sooner.

Sane commentators are saying very similar things ranging from "she didn't answer a single question" to "she failed to stay on topic in a single comment". The consensus seems to be that her "answers" would not have been different if she had not even heard the questions which, considering the fact that she appeared to be reading most of the time she wasn't talking, might be the case.

  38. Mr. Evil Says:

I think the Obama camp should contact Flavor Flav's management and see if they can have a giant American flag clock for Obama and Biden to wear whenever they appear with republicans. Lets see 'em top that!

    snark/off

  39. joe cantwell Says:

    this clip is the best

  41. Mr. Evil Says:

Has Chris Matthews recently experienced an epiphany?

  42. liberalinaredstate Says:

Sarah Palin would make a great game show host. Or how about one of the models...... stylishly standing and pointing at what's behind the curtain.....
Actually she screams Roller Derby Queen

  43. The Dogfather Says:

That's not an American flag pin (or brooch) she's wearing -- it has far too few stripes. It appears closer to the flag of Cuba.

Why does John McCain want someone wearing a Cuban flag brooch to help him ru(i)n our country?

  44. Buckie Boy Says:

She used crib notes, her wink was irritating, she was snarky, most of the time she never answered the question and left you wondering what the hell she said, mispronounced nuclear as GWB does, which was driving my wife nuts, she is the grammar police, big time, and the use of "also" was excessive, also drove my wife nuts.

But on the nation stage, Biden won...sorry Fox viewers a sparkly shinny object does not win the debate, but we know how shinny objects distract you neanderthals.

  45. Wayne Says:

“So I would say flag-pin wise, she is a hands-down winner,” said Doocy

    geebus.
Duncey seems to set new boundaries for STUPID every time he opens he opens any of his orifices.

  46. Styve Says:

I thought that it was an artistic impression of the US Flag, with only 3 pair of R and W stripes, and then I noticed the rope, which seemed similar to the snake on the "Don't Tread On Me" Gadsen Flag. I am wondering if there is any connection with the Alaskan Independence Party.

Wayne Madsen has been covering the Palins' involvement with the secessionist, white supremacist movement...

On September 10, 2008, WMR reported: "The AIP is part of a network of extreme right-wing secessionists around the country, many of whom are linked to white supremacist causes. In 2006, the AIP participated in the first North American Secessionist Convention in Burlington, Vermont. Also attracted to the convention were a number of Southern secessionist movements, including the League of the South; the Southern Caucus; the Southern National Congress; and Christian Exodus, which advocates the secession of South Carolina as an independent republic governed by the Ten Commandments as the foundation of law."

Palin's and her husband's Todd's connections to the AIP are all the more worrisome when it is pointed out that the AIP's founder, Joe Vogler, who ran for governor of Alaska in 1986. Vogler's running mate was Al Rowe, a former Alaska state trooper. Vogler disappeared in 1993 after he attempted to buy plastic explosives. Vogler's remains were discovered in a gravel pit near Fairbanks in 1994. A petty criminal identified himself as Vogler's murderer in a very mysterious case.

    News Breaker!!
What I haven't seen or I over looked it, but what about the law? Yes you know flag laws? We still have laws in this nation, right? Look:

Gotcha! The media storm starts now!

  50. Fool Zero Says:

So I would say flag-pin wise, she is a hands-down winner,” said Doocy. Carlson noted that her pin had “a few more jewels” too.

Two things this reminded me of:

    1. The scene in The Great Dictator where Chaplin's and Oakie's characters (parody versions of Hitler and Mussolini) pump their barber chairs higher and higher in an effort to outdo each other (more here).

    2. The Korean truce negotiations at Panmunjom, where

... both sides had flags of equal size on the table during their meetings. One day, a flag was brought in that was slightly larger than the other. Thereafter, each alternate day brought a new flag, each one a little bit bigger than the largest from the day before. Eventually the flags got so big that neither side could get them through the door.

Sounds like the kind of stuff Fox thrives on.

Sheesh, what happens to that link? All right then, the bare URL should've been:

  53. the Lone Voice of Reason Says:

McGrampy lost his debate then since he did not have a flag pin on, THE STUPID LITTLE TRAITOR. HOW DARE HE! :)

  54. Dogger Says:

That make Tina Fey even more patriotic. She had three flag pins on last weeks SNL.

  55. Klem Kiddilehopper Says:

I don't think that the pin above the so-called American flag pin is the State Flag of Alaska. The state flag of Alaska has 8 yellow colored stars on a blue background, the stars represent the Big Dipper!

  56. Morgan423 Says:

I suppose she also won parent of the year, considering how she plopped a baby down on top of that giant flag pin post-debate. *sigh*

  57. 1984 Says:

Flag pins are beyond silly season if I'm asked about it. It doesn't actually tell anything, anyone can put it on.

  58. MrSquirrel Says:

Since when does the American flag have seven stripes? I'm pretty sure there was always thirteen original colonies.

Why does Sarah Palin hate America so much that she wants to get rid of six of the original colonies?

  59. ohplease Says:

I pray for the apocalypse. Americans are morons.

  60. burningra Says:

Some of you guys are pretty retarded lol. Obviously they weren't being serious about giving her some kind of win in the debate all because she had on a bigger flag pin. I swear, some people on the internet will post articles about absolutely anything if they possibly think it will in some way demean the persons they are in opposite views with.

And Fox News is about the only one I'll even watch as far as national broadcasts on television. The others like CBS News and especially NBC news are blatantly bias towards the Obama campaign so much that it just makes you almost wanna slap them sometime. NBC is the worst. To be honest I'm almost confused as to why Brian Williams hasn't put an Obama shrine up on his desk yet lol.

They will literally go on air and tell lies half the time if they have to in order to keep from saying very much negatively about Obama all while they will focus on any little tiny thing negative they can find about McCain. Kinda like somehow here posting an article trashing Fox News which is one of few ones actually telling it like it is all because someone made a comment about Palin wearing a larger pin lol.

The guy on the Fox radio news show goes on every day trashing the other media stations like NBC and showing all they're choosing to ignore and lie about with Obama. He's the guy that Obama said he was gonna send his man after so he could "tear him up" lol. Yeah he store him up alright. It was more like completely the other way around with who got tore up. It's just the fact that very few are going after Obama in interviews like they go after McCain. The Obama compain has been on the offensive for almost the whole run while McCain has has been more on the defensive. Palin for the first time took it back and went on the offensive against a lot of the fud the Obama comapain has been spewing about and that's what McCain ought to be doing all the way up to the election.

I have nothing against a media station being honest and focusing on both campaigns as both should be heard. But that's definitely not the case with a lot of what's going on right now in the media. Americans really should wake up and realize that the media is controlled by personal agendas and anyone that believes otherwise is a fool. The media only tells you what they want you to hear. Very few tell the real truth.

  61. MrSquirrel Says:

Hopefully nobody who watched this, didn't realize they were joking.

But, as pointed out in the post, during the initial flag pin uproar, he said such things as:

(From the October 23 edition of Fox News' Fox & Friends):

DOOCY: First he kicked his American flag pin to the curb. Now Barack Obama has a new round of patriotism problems. Wait until you hear what the White House hopeful didn't do during the singing of the national anthem.

So the point of it is, Doocy has become a parody of himself. He now light-heartedly plays a game of "mine is bigger than yours", flag-pin version... when earlier in the campaign, he helped perpetuate the silly notion that Obama was unpatriotic for not wearing one.

I suppose for Doocy, it's funny because he feels vindicated that he and all the other flag-wavers have now made it a de facto requirement for all candidates to wear a flag pin.

  62. EugeneDebs Says:

    burningra Says:

IF you really only watch Fox you are WAAAAAYYYY stupid. I mean you must be left over from the first primordial ooooze of stupid. We understand that ignorant hivemind morons like you LOVE to be lied to by Fox but they arent news they are PROPAGANDA. Morons like you want to be LIED to, you want to be told anything that conforms to the delusional fantasies that you have A) made up in your head, and B) Have been instructed to believe by your hivemind screechmonkey masters. The thing is that YOU being a moron doesnt mean we are retarded. The fact is WE understand the things that require the higher brain function that you will ever be far too stupid to accomplish

  63. sporky Says:

@burningra: I don't understand why people come up with this utterly idiotic "argument". Here's the statement that I think is stupid. See if you agree with me.

"Twinkies are unhealthy. I don't like the unhealthiness of Twinkies. Therefore instead I eat deep fried Snickers bars coated in honey."

Stupid, right? That's you in a nutshell though. Twinkies being other news outlets. Unhealthy (or in this case, biased). Your response is to head to an even MORE unhealthy (biased) media. C'mon! Seriously. If you hated biased news media, you wouldn't watch ANY news media. Especially not FOX. Try watch the BBC or something; they're probably less biased towards political parties. So yes, while I'll agree with your assertion, I think your reaction is plain old stupid.
