McCain Flack Inadvertently Accuses McCain Of A ‘100 Percent Lie’ On Health Care Tax Increase

On Sunday, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) admitted that his health care plan raises taxes. “[O]nly those with the Cadillac gold-plated health insurance policies today are the ones who might suffer from it,” he claimed. Today, McCain spokesperson Tucker Bounds, however, contradicted McCain, claiming that it is a “100 percent lie” to say that McCain’s health care plan would be a tax increase:

First of all, is John McCain’s health care plan actually effectively would do wonders for the middle class. … Health care would get better. It would be more accessible to middle class families … What is campaign is doing is advertising in complete falsehoods. They’ve said that John McCain wants to tax health care. It is a 100 percent lie.

Watch it:

Bounds claimed that the McCain plan would do “wonders for the middle class.” But, because McCain’s tax credits are indexed to inflation — and not the faster growing cost of health care — his initial $5,000 offering depreciates every year, forcing families to pay more for their health insurance. As a recent CAPAF report states, the largest tax hike falls on the middle class.

For a couple earning $40,000 and paying $13,800 for insurance, “McCain’s new tax credit would cut their taxes by $50 in 2009, but because the credit quickly falls behind rising premiums that are the basis of the current tax break, the family would pay $1,169 more in taxes in 2013…[and] would pay $2,809 more in taxes by 2018”:

Perhaps this is yet another case of McCain not speaking for the McCain campaign.

McCain and Bounds are cut from the same cloth. Let’s hope they’re both toast on November 4.

  2. tokin librul says:

One would think that Tucker Bounds might have concern about his future when speaking with forked tongue every day?

Interestingly, if you parse the (translated) text hermeneutically, the 8th (or 9th, depending) Commandment doesn’t forbid “lying” per se. It forbids “bearing false witness against a neighbor.” Not “lying,” but “slander” is what prohibited by the Lord. Everybody knows (even “God” apparently) that sometimes ya gotta lie to cover your ass…

  3. martymartymarty says:

Bounds certainly does his job very well. His task is a combination of parroting back every talking point to support the McCain campaign perspective and to project every fault they are accused of onto Obama and his campaign, basically claiming that Obama is doing exactly what McCain is criticized for. He has been hired to argue from only that perspective, and I actually think he could argue for any perspective he is hired to espouse just as effectively and stubbornly. That, of course, makes him nothing more than a hack for hire, but I bet his price goes up after this campaign due to his tireless efforts whether they get McCain into office or not.

  4. pbg says:

Do they really propose to write into their policy a dollar amount? $5,000? It’s inadequate now, but in two or three years it would be inadequate for anybody. Non-group premium have been doubling roughly two years.
And their sneering reference to people with those ‘gold-plated, Cadillac’ insurance coverage,” as if that’s an elitist thing, is just incomprehensible. ‘Look! They have adequate health insurance! Get ‘em!”
    Mcain/Palin 08? You can’t afford it.

    something’s lost in translation?

    i don’t get it, TP.

what i hear is bounds saying “it is a 100 percent lie” that obama’s ["is"?] campaign “said that john mccain wants to tax health care”…

he can say that if he wants…

what is “inadvertently” about any of this?

argh! maybe it’s too early for me…

Even if you interpret it the way that you do, it is still making McCain out to be a liar. Bounds is saying that the Obama campaign says that McCain wants to tax health care and that is a lie (that McCain won’t tax health care). But it isn’t a lie because McCain admitted that it would end up in a tax increase for some people.

You know it’s over for the McCain campaign when the biggest on going debates over flip-flopping are all occuring from within.

Palin contradicts McCain weekly, and doesn’t seem to care that she disagrees with him. She acts like she’s the top of the ticket, and it’s okay for her to change little Johnny’s mind (diaper)…

Everything that Tucker Bounds says is one of three things:

    Ignorant;
    Stupid;
    or a complete Lie.

It just doesn’t get any more ridiculous than Tucker Bounds. This guy is going to be selling umbrellas on the sidewalk in a couple of years because his ignorance, stupidity, and mendacity are absolutely toxic to those in whose employ he serves.

To John McSame… drop this guy like a bad habit.

  17. stateofthedivision says:

Tax policy and accounting rules are tools used by business leaders to get their way.

The big money boys loved “mark to market” accounting when everything was going up. It allowed them to borrow more. Now that things flipped, they want to dump it.

Now with estimating hold to maturity values and off balance sheet accounting, a firm’s financial statements could be way off.

There was no sign of SemGroup’s sudden failure. One might expect an oil and natural gas pipeline company to have solid financials, but hedging took them down, virtually overnight.

HCA, the largest for-profit hospital company, has $1.6 billion in investment junk on their books.

Companies just got their bailout. Whether they buy SemGroup’s underwater forward looking contracts or HCA’s auction rate securities remains to be seen.

But the Chamber of Commerce wants to jettison that pesky health insurance benefit and McCain is their best friend. If the employee gets the credit, they’ll soon pay the freight. Employers want to ditch the burden of the benefit so they can compete in a global economy.

It also will boost non-retiring CEO incentive compensation. The poison of greed remains in the system. The bailout bill did nothing structural. It is a one time sloughing off bad risk to the public. Health insurance is the next dump.

  19. unbelievable says:

In the end, this is the result of these kinds of internal conflicts:

“It means the road for McCain to 270 is narrowing, whereas for Obama there are still several paths,” said Dante Scala, professor of political science at the University of New Hampshire. “McCain can now win by holding the states George Bush won in 2004, but playing defense won’t be that easy because Obama is doing well in a number of those states. The fact that states like Indiana and Missouri are still on the table spells trouble for McCain.”

    – - Uhhh, no, he didn’t. He accused the Obama campaign of lying. Geeze.

  21. unbelievable says:

    Also from the linked article:

Of Obama’s 82 events, 62 have been in states that Bush won in 2004 and 20 have been in states won by Kerry.

Conversely, of 97 McCain events since June, 59 have been defending states Bush won and 38 were on offense, in states taken by Kerry.

Pay for your largest expenses ( Insurance, rent/mortgage, bills)out of pocket, as much as possible; then, charge your day to day living expenses( food, gas, etc.) while paying the minimum on your credit cards.

I wonder how many KoolAide trucks it takes to spin these HACKS up every morning?? THAT’S got to cost a bunch and may explain why McSame pulled out of Michigan… (only one MINOR reason)..

It’s been clear for weeks that Tucker Bounds has got the IQ of a bag of hammers and is barely able to be a puppet much less a marketeer for these fools.. Hopefully they have no day job left when this campaign is done…

With this nutbag and Nancy Pfotenhauer on Maddow’s show last night the scum is quickly getting REAL deep…

  27. madstork123 says:

    I’m confused here.

Has John McCain ever spoken for the McCain campaign?

It seems like at least once a week someone comes out and tells us that what John said wasn’t exactly what the campaign is about. Call me foolish, but it is the McCain campaign and John is the “McCain” in the McCain campaign.

Is this going to turn out to be like an episode of the old British spy program “The Prisoner” where #6 wins the campaign to be #2 then finds out it was all a lie and his assistant is actually in charge?

I really don’t want to find Palin in charge. Not enough note cards for her to handle everything with a talking point.

Sieg Heil! Go Brownshirts! (my reaction, to myself… other wise, speechless)
