Has John McCain ever spoken for the McCain campaign?

It seems like at least once a week someone comes out and tells us that what John said wasn’t exactly what the campaign is about. Call me foolish, but it is the McCain campaign and John is the “McCain” in the McCain campaign.

Is this going to turn out to be like an episode of the old British spy program “The Prisoner” where #6 wins the campaign to be #2 then finds out it was all a lie and his assistant is actually in charge?
