During the vice presidential debate on Thursday, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin announced that she “may not answer the questions that either the moderator or you want to hear.” In fact, “On at least 10 occasions, Palin gave answers that were nonspecific, completely generic, pivoted away from the question at hand, or simply ignored it.” On NBC’s Meet The Press today, debate moderator Gwen Ifill said that Palin “more than ignored” her questions. “Blew me off I think is the technical term,” said Ifill. Watch it:
LOL Palin was coached to say certain things. She clearly does not have the ability to go outside that.
October 5th, 2008 at 11:41 amFor weeks we've heard Palin claim to have empathy for the average American, but during the debate when Biden talked about his own moving story of struggle, she was cold and unsympathetic.
Her actions should speak louder than her words, America.
October 5th, 2008 at 11:42 amWoman up and own up to your failure. Why didn't you follow up, Gwen?
Someone wrote that all you did was throw out topics for discussion, not moderate.
October 5th, 2008 at 11:42 amThat's alright, Gwen. Rich Lowry is thinking Palin blew him off, too.
October 5th, 2008 at 11:43 amstewarjt Says: Someone wrote that all you did was throw out topics for discussion, not moderate.
That was the only format to which the McCain camp would agree for the VP debate. Unfortunately, Ifill had little to do with that - although, to her credit, she did challenge Palin on more than one occasion when the Govenor didn't answer the question.
October 5th, 2008 at 11:45 amI watched the debate at a bar. I was sitting next to “joe six-pack ” Let me say from the bottom of my heart I don’t want that a**hole anywhere near the White House let alone a 72 year old heartbeat away from the presidency Like Palin he had no understanding of one of the main purposes of debate It’s to demonstrate the ability of the candidate to think on their feet by answering a question Not as Palin did supply the question and then answer it with your prepared text Fear of offending this monster keeps anyone from calling her on her lack of understanding the process or the job
October 5th, 2008 at 11:46 amOf course Palin blew Ifill off. And Ifill let her get away with it. Her performance as a moderator was pitiful. All she needed to do was to say "Governor, you didn't answer the question I asked, now do you want to answer the question that was put forth?"
October 5th, 2008 at 11:47 amYeah, but Palin had a providential revelation via Starbuck's that those women who don't support her are doomed to hell.
October 5th, 2008 at 11:50 amShort Palin: "I will tick to my talking points regardless of the topic being discussed. I am a debate troll, if you will..."
October 5th, 2008 at 11:50 amSomeone pointed out the other day, that when you watch the real deal and the SNL skits, its difficult to tell them apart; how sad. Even sadder is when she loses on Election Day, we will have to put up with her sh*t here in Alaska. Palin is an embarassment to the people of the State of Alaska, I sure hope impeachment is on the table when she returns.
October 5th, 2008 at 11:50 amOops... make that "stick to my talking points..."
October 5th, 2008 at 11:51 amhttp://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/10/05/palin-misquotes-albright_n_131967.html
October 5th, 2008 at 11:53 amOopse, that link doesn't work because I don't know what the hell I'm doing.
October 5th, 2008 at 11:55 amYes Gwen, she did blow you off...and you did NOTHING to stop it. What a failure Ifill was. Hope we never see her "moderate" again.
October 5th, 2008 at 11:55 amHussein McCain Says: Yeah, but Palin had a providential revelation via Starbuck’s that those women who don’t support her are doomed to hell.
Oh, yeah, like that really scared me into voting for her...
As a professional woman, the thing that appalls me the most about Palin, aside from her sheer lack of qualifications, is how she flirts and acts all giddy-school-girly. Very, very unprofessional.
October 5th, 2008 at 11:57 amAre you saying Joe six-pack said that, or you said that?
October 5th, 2008 at 11:58 am“Blew me off i think is the technical term,” said Ifill.
- - Ya think, Gwen Awful? You were cowed from the get go and an embarrassment to yourself, PBS and almost as big an embarrassment to women as Palin was.
Next time, let's just use Queen Latifah and at ;east get some laughs out of it.
October 5th, 2008 at 12:01 pmI think Gov. Palin's Debate performance will Backfire with Independents.
If the Questions were fair ( which they were) and Pertinent (which they were), then deserved a Considered Answer.
Gov. Palin not only Blew off Ms. Iffil, she blew off the millions of American Voters who tuned in for some Answers.
For Example: http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/10/5/7520/71415/807/620582
from davidikc's diary....
Yesterday I called up a friend from my days in Kansas City, just to catch up. His wife's family lives in rural Missouri, and they are all rabid Republicans. They are low-income folks, hate everything liberal (at least as far as they define "liberal"), hate the gays, hate the blacks, you get the picture. In other words, they are those small-town, working-class, white voters who are supposed to be John McCain's bread and butter.
"What did they think?" I eventually asked him to break the silence.
"They hated her," my friend responded.
"It turns out that they really, really, really, really did not like the fact that Palin flat out did not answer many of the questions. They found that to be outrageous. After all, the entire reason they were watching the debate was to see her answer questions, doggone it."
October 5th, 2008 at 12:04 pmYeah Ifill was a huge disappointment.
October 5th, 2008 at 12:04 pmPalin could take over Fey's work at SNL -at least when it comes to Palin's impersonations.
I doubt anyone would notice the difference. But I guarantee you everyone would think Fey is doing a fantastic job.
Worst thing is, I actually know someone who believes Palin is quite the pick, while Obama is a fraud. Even after watching the debates and the interview (interviews?) with Couric. Go figure...
October 5th, 2008 at 12:05 pmthis is encouraging, given that the day after the debate the narrative seemed to be about how charismatic and wonderful Palin was. The MSM must have read the polls and determined it was ok to state the obvious
October 5th, 2008 at 12:06 pmGregor Samsa Says: Worst thing is, I actually know someone who believes Palin is quite the pick, while Obama is a fraud. Even after watching the debates and the interview (interviews?) with Couric. Go figure…
Unfortunately, me too. I've decided to never ever be a passenger in a moving vehicle car with these people. Clearly, even sober their judgment is too badly impaired... I often wonder how they manage to breathe.
October 5th, 2008 at 12:10 pmThat entire debate was scripted.
The best that can be said for Palin is she remembered her lines (although she had notes--and did she have a teleprompter?) and didn't miss a camera cue. Wink wink...Doggonnit...!
Although, she did mispronounce nuclear as "nuke-u-lar" in the fine time-tested George Dubya tradition.
But maybe she thinks that will play for her as just plain folksy with Mr. Joe Six-Pack and Mrs. Hockey Mom...
October 5th, 2008 at 12:11 pmJust a friendly piece of advice for our republiscum friends:
the next time you decide to run a woman for vice president in a vain effort to appear modern, if you decide to go with an aging beauty queen, go with someone like diane sawyer. this artic slope trollop you found has susan b anthony doing backflips in her grave.
October 5th, 2008 at 12:16 pmPutin/Palin blew off their own media mouthpiece (Ifill). Tells me she is idiot!
October 5th, 2008 at 12:17 pmFrom the debate transcript:
October 5th, 2008 at 12:17 pm
Palin got away with murder so let’s blame Ifill? Don’t forget that Ifill was the moderator of a debate between an elder statesman and a hockey mom. Think how much debate time would have been eaten up just trying to get Caribou Barbie to answer a question. (Don’t forget this woman speaks gibberish AND in tongues.) Besides if The Snow Queen of Alaska didn’t answer a frigging question, it means she didn’t know the frigging answer. Jeebus.
October 5th, 2008 at 12:19 pmlet's face it, palin is out of her league. Palin knew she was sunk once gwen ifill refused to sleep with her like the judges of miss wasilla.
October 5th, 2008 at 12:23 pmYeah think?
You should have stopped her mid-bullshit-sentence and told her to please stick to the question.
And that is what kind of president she will be also, one that blows off what anyone thinks and pushes the RED BUTTON anyway to bring about the religious nut jobs "END TIMES"
This Nazi Dictatoris is very, very dangerous.
October 5th, 2008 at 12:23 pmGregor Samsa Says:
Palin could take over Fey’s work at SNL -at least when it comes to Palin’s impersonations.
Apparently Tina Fey would love that since she has said she hates playing Palin. I think she feels dirty when she is done playing that bimbo.
October 5th, 2008 at 12:26 pmi would give my liver to have someone say to eskimo barbie in an interview just once, "and exactly how does being a hockey mom qualify you to be vice president. you seem to think it's one of the qualifications so, please explain."
October 5th, 2008 at 12:26 pmSorry, Gwen, she didn't blow you off! She blew off the American voters!
October 5th, 2008 at 12:27 pmOn top of everything else, there's also this:
October 5th, 2008 at 12:36 pm
Poor Gwen. Wasn't this debate supposed to HELP her sell more copies of her book about her idol, Obama? I feel so bad everyone did not keep that in mind during the debate. After all, aren't we ALL in the Obama camp?
October 5th, 2008 at 12:36 pmYou can make a high school girl do the same thing Sarah did in what's called a debate.
October 5th, 2008 at 12:38 pmThis was not a debate.
Sarah came to this so called debate with so many notes written to her by her handlers and she was in reality looking down, sorting them out ,reading them and giving her answers.
What's difficult about that after 3 days of practicing and coaching by McCain's staff?!!
Just imagine what Sarah's answers would be if she was not allowed to have her written notes with her.
She did not give direct answers to questions given to her ,and some of her answers were not honest.
When she was linking drilling with our US dependency on foreign oil ,someone should have asked her..
why then oil companies in Alaska are drilling and selling oil and gas to Japan..?
Her answer about the power of Vice president should make people think twice about seeing this woman in the White House.
Chicagobluesgirl, Palin for VP! Let's make America cute again! P.S. Have you ever heard Obama DENY he is the anti-cripes?
October 5th, 2008 at 12:40 pmThe media's take, is that it was Biden's job to pin her down - completely ignoring the fact that if Biden did go after her for refusing to answer the questions, they'd all pile on him for being disrespectful.
In that sense, he couldn't win. Damned if he did, or didn't attack her
October 5th, 2008 at 12:44 pmGiven Bush's abysmal approval rate, Wilson implied that a majority of Americans are unpatriotic.
Question #1: How can one be so dumb?
October 5th, 2008 at 12:47 pmQuestion #2: Why is the media letting this twit get away with her nonsense?
Biden DID win, by letting Gov. Palin Lose all on her own.
October 5th, 2008 at 12:49 pmGiven Bush’s abysmal approval rate, Wilson implied that a majority of Americans are unpatriotic.
Woodrow, or Flip?
October 5th, 2008 at 12:49 pmI'm glad Gwen Ifill is saying this now, but I really wish she'd done something about it during the debate.
October 5th, 2008 at 1:00 pmPalin blew off Gwen and the American people all in one narrowly scripted breath: that was all she was capable of doing. Now instead of addressing the problems she & McCain want to avoid, they are out on the smear & fear trail linking Obama to terrorists again. sigh
October 5th, 2008 at 1:02 pmPalin's mental development stopped around age 14. That would mean that she has been in neutral for about thirty years now. Winking Palin is just another Bush with lipstick, as far as we know. She is the world's oldest (and the world's dumbest) teenybopper. She is a terraist from the tundra.
October 5th, 2008 at 1:04 pmTypical MSM bull***. Palin ignores Ifill, walks all over her, doesn't answer her questions, Gwen does nothing about it until it's over, then complains about it when the damage has already been done.
October 5th, 2008 at 1:07 pmThe Bush administration has been "blowing off" the American public for 8 years so it's just more of the same.
October 5th, 2008 at 1:11 pmNo wonder little johnny mcinsane is so grumpy and snarky lately - he thought he was the one that was gonna be blown.
Did you see the videos from the convention of him leering at her ass?
October 5th, 2008 at 1:50 pmThen why the HELL didn't you follow up?
October 5th, 2008 at 2:06 pmbeltman713 Says
October 5th, 2008 at 2:10 pmNo I said that. He said he thought she would be a great VP and he would like to feel those lips on the head of his (member) my word not his
In the end, Sarah Mascara relied on her skills and "moxie" as a pageant participant/celebrity, not her knowledge or experience as an elected official, to fake her way thru this debate and probably most things in her life. I keep hearing that she is an "energy expert" too...what exactly IS that? Does that mean she has a not of energy, she understands energy regulations, or that she is just full of hot gas?
At this point it's both funny and sad that she still must be considered relevant to the discussion, but until November comes and goes she will remain a part of the scenery...I just hope she smiles and turns for the judges on her way to disappearing back into the Arctic after that...god help us all otherwise!
October 5th, 2008 at 2:16 pmGwen might not have been the best, but what worries me is the moderator in the next Obama and McCain debate. Tom Brokaw has been "shuttling" between NBC and the McCain campaign, trying to please McCain's people. Brokaw has been a huge dissapointment for a guy who seemed at one time to be liberal.
October 5th, 2008 at 2:22 pmSo why didn't Ifill simply say "We're done here" after Palin's statement, and call the whole thing off? Seems to me by showing up the candidates agreed to participate. Palin stated outright she wasn't going to answer questions. So why not call the whole thing off? Would have been a hell of a television moment...
October 5th, 2008 at 2:41 pmIf you got blown off and you did not do anything about it shame on you. Unfortunately, shame on us for you not doing your JOB properly!
http://comedianforpresident.com
October 5th, 2008 at 2:48 pmOne of the many problems with Gwen Ifils performance was the fact that she did not state her questions in a clear and concise manner. Gwen Ifil sometimes stumbled over her awkwardly structured questions. In doing so it was easy for the viewer to quickly forget the original question since it was never clearly enunciated in the first place. Making matters worse is the fact that when it came Palins time to answer - the “Moderator” did not restate the question instead she simply turned to Palin a stated "Governor". It was a perfect situation for Palin to exploit. On at least half of her responses she could easily "Pivot" to her scripted talking points since the question at hand was no longer clear to many.
The ONLY time that Ifil took Palin to task for not answering a question is when Ifil asserted that NEITHER candidate had answered a question (“Governor, Senator, neither of you really answered that last question about what you would do as vice president. I’m going to come back to that…”)
Clearly Gwen Ifil was not prepared to admonish Palin UNLESS she could admonish Biden at the same time. Clearly Ifil was bending over backwards to appear “fair” to Palin and in doing so was unfair to Biden.
Another big problem was the choice of questions. They were far too predicable. Gwen Ifil did not ask one question that could not be easily answered by flipping through the lists of standard talking points.
As noted by others Palin did not “blow-off” Gwen Ifil – she blew-off the American people and Gwen Ifil ALLOWED this to happen.
As a side note - the next day in an interview with FOX Palin made reference to the term “PIVOT” in response to a question about the Katie Couric interview. By this slip it is clear that Palin has been coached by her programmers on this avoidance technique which we saw on display during the “debate”
The fact is Gwen Ifil had NO business being on that stage. She is writing a book with “Obama” in the title and as such there is, at least, a perceived conflict of interest. She should have addressed this with both campaigns at the time that she was selected as moderator. She did not do that and when it came to light in the 11th. Hour she should have stepped down since she could no longer be fair and objective to EITHER side of the debate.
October 5th, 2008 at 2:49 pmGwen is just another Bush crime family apologist.
October 5th, 2008 at 2:56 pm#55 kevinbrown
October 5th, 2008 at 2:59 pmyour job description (see head of nail and hit it) exactly on target
Tawdry Says:

Tom Brokaw is approaching the end of his career as a talking head. As such, he has pivoted to the right so he can line up a cushy job in his retirement. The right will reward him by giving him a well paid job sitting on some board where he only has to show up a couple of times a month.
But, Brokaw has the same problem that Ifill did. If he is blatantly pro McCain, it's not going to help McCain's cause at all.
But, since Brokaw is moderating the "town hall" debate, there won't be a lot of potential for him to play favorites.
October 5th, 2008 at 3:04 pmThe transcript appears to be incorrect; she actually said: "I may not answer the questions THE WAY that either the moderator or you want to hear".
I have no doubt that ThinkProgress will immediately verify that and provide a prominent correction.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
It is true and should be corrected. It also however changes NOTHING. IF Caribou Barbie had in fact ANSWERED the questions but in a way she didnt think Ifill liked that would be one thing. In fact she didnt answer the questions AT ALL. She also had that little meme ready to go because she KNEW she wasnt going to answer the questions. She was going to give her stump speech in soundbite form no matter WHAT the questions were and she knew that going in. If Ifill had asked what the color of the sky was or what her favorite flaover or Moosejerkey was Sarahcudda would have given the same answers. That is WE are mavericks wink, wink
October 5th, 2008 at 3:41 pmgee, whiz, gwen, if you had more gravitas than a hatcheck girl, maybe YOU could have controlled the situation.
October 5th, 2008 at 3:45 pmWhen you think about it, the debate is essentially a job interview. If the public thinks the candidate is worth hiring, we vote for them.
Now, if you go into a job interview and say that you aren't going to answer the questions, but just talk about what you want to, how can you expect to get that job?

October 5th, 2008 at 4:21 pmI have a seared tuna steak with wasabi mayo and I am prepping the grill for cobia and sword. I figure you will be too busy to stick around but you are sure welcome as always. We have so much to talk of...
John Kerry Says:
Nothing as usual. Here is some more breaking news JK, YOU are a moronic depraved troll with the intellectual capacity of a kiwi fruit
October 5th, 2008 at 4:25 pmSarah did not participate in a debate. She breezed in thinking it an opportunity for photo ops of her making a series of talking points. This is simple. You dont answer the questions you arent debating
October 5th, 2008 at 4:27 pmSarah Palin demonstrated that she is an excellent reader.
So says http://4art2.wordpress.com/
October 5th, 2008 at 5:38 pmAre these actual debates or repugs' debacles?
plain is rude, cocky, ridiculous, unfocused, petty, cheesey, silly, a tv ho, and a liar. Innately these are repugs' traits. It's burned in their DNA.
It's very obvious to me and 99.999% of most truthful blogs that the repugs look stupid as all hell. It's as if I'm watching chimpy all over again. The pancake lies, the bragging, the ridiculously magically off-topic answers, the smirks, her**gag**good old girl pollywad gone-with-the-wind, cookie-cutter, fakeass repug woman-type.
Please woman enough with you toting your fertile, dysfunctional, silly, family around.
Is this your first time yall been out the woods? Yall are like the Beverly Hillbillies...no, the Beverly Hillbillies were smarter and honest.
October 5th, 2008 at 5:49 pmJohn McCain "blew off" Sen. Barack Obama during their debate, apparently not willing to even look Obama in the eye, to show some respect, to acknowledge his existence.
Sarah Palin "blew off" Gwen Ifill in the VP debate, ignoring the questions asked her by Ifill, with Palin reading extensively from cue cards, talking to the television camera while also ignoring Sen. Joe Biden except when she looked down her nose and made some snooty comment.
But it was the hostile attitude displayed by John McCain toward Sen. Barack Obama and a similar hostile attitude shown by Sarah Palin toward Gwen Ifill that makes me wonder just how RACIST the Republicans really are, when they can't seem to show even a little common decency and common courtesy to their fellow Americans citizens.
Jesus Christ would weep at the racist attitude of some Republicans.
October 5th, 2008 at 5:54 pmPeople knew when she wasn't answering the question. She won, what, a max of 37% in the polls? That's about the percent that can rationalize voting GOP for president.
Ifill wasn't that bad. You don't need to pull over a swerving car that's going into the ditch anyway.
October 5th, 2008 at 6:11 pmBiden will be off the trail for a few days -- his m-in-law died.
October 5th, 2008 at 6:17 pmNo, shame on PALIN for not doing HER job properly and answering to the American people.

She did stutter a lot only because missy ann was all over the place with her answers. You can tell Ifill was trying to put some questions another way to grasp plain's illogically yacking. I couldn't believe plain's lack of debate skills. I too wasn't sure this woman wouldn't be so bold as to disrespect the debate rules.
plain told Ms. Ifill she understood her questions but she has her agenda to fullfil. Whose heard of that shqte before?
October 5th, 2008 at 9:48 pmaurorasurferinak we feel your pain.
And Ifill, she blew you off because that's what the popular kids in high school did to the more intelligent "nerds" and she seems to not have outgrown that awful trait.
Reality--she's too stupid to worry about, let's tank McDepends.
I heard that the Obama campaign is finally going to start an ad campaign that spells out McIdiot's Keating Five relationships on Monday. Since they want to stretch the truth on anyone who has ever met Obama as being closely tied to him, I think it's high time McIdiot got an eyeful of that mud he's slinging around.

October 5th, 2008 at 1:00 pm
_______
Was she even allowed to? For all we know, challenging the candidates to answer the questions may have been against the rules dictated by the corporate cabal that runs our presidential "debates."
October 6th, 2008 at 8:03 amMorning hussein toasterhead --hope you are having a good day today. I think you are right that there were rules to the debate about Ifill being unable to challenge the candidates answers.
I gotta get to work--keep pounding the trollies into the ground :)
October 6th, 2008 at 8:18 amToo late to cry about it now, Ifill. You should have called Palin on her antics DURING the debate, or at least point out that she's obliged to answer the questions that are ASKED, not the ones that she wants to answer. Otherwise, what is the purpose of having a moderator anyway? If the moderator can't control the debate, then why do we need one?
October 6th, 2008 at 1:15 pmThe DNC should have never excepted that there would be no follow up questions and Ifill should have anticipated that Palin was going to slither away from direct questioning, that's why she needed to ask tough and legitimate questions, such as How being investigated for ABUSE of POWER will effect her campaigning and her continuance of the race .
October 6th, 2008 at 2:15 pmIt's appalling that this show biz queen can run away from her numerous false and misleading statements, i.e. " sold the plane on ebay" ..." rejected the bridge to no where" Abuse of Power investigation" approved by BOTH parties in Alaska .
Somehow all of those ethical questions are forgotten and swept under the carpet by the complicit media, at the same time complicit NBC keeps reporting The phony Aires and Obama connection , providing pictures while regurgitating the same bogus allegations . Now CNN is happy parroting Palin/Cheney's Weather Underground connections , w/ plenty of pics and video .
I thought Palin's attitude was disgusting. Condescending, rude and snarky throughout. I hated her.
I was embarrassed for Gwen Ifill; it was obvious she was warned not to rein Sarah in at all, well, because that would show her "bias." Another stupid Repuke cheat.
As for Sarah, she recited memorized talking points, cueing off "key" words, with pre-written phrases to turn the questions to her memorized talking points.
As a stage actor, I've memorized dialogue/entire scripts in a week's time - it's not that difficult.
October 6th, 2008 at 2:30 pmThey cornered her with the accusations of conflict of interest, and she reacted by being overly afraid of having her integrity attacked. To her credit, I bet she also was concerned that she not make her supposed partiality into an issue for the McCain side. They suckered her into being the ref who "lets 'em play".
October 6th, 2008 at 8:53 pmGovernor Palin simply side stepped you Liberal bias Gwen and spoke directly to the people. Do you people honestly think Ifill was impartial? Do you think Obama or Biden would answer questions directly that were posed by Sean Hannity....no they would not. Oh and by the way how many times did Biden side step Ifills questions? And the ones he did answer directly he lied about.
OBAMA IS A MARXIST
October 7th, 2008 at 12:17 pmYou should be embarrased of Ifill, Ifill should have recused herself as the moderator. Liberals in the media have for a long time masked thier true leanings but now they simply cannot help themselves and they are tired of trying to appear objective when in fact they are not. Regardless of what happens in the election the real good that has come of all this is that the American people now realize that they cant trust anything they hear on the major brodcast news, PBS, CNN etc...
OBAMA IS A MARXIST
