McCain Voted To Protect Domestic Terrorists Who Carry Out Violence At Abortion Clinics»

This morning on CBS’s Early Show, McCain-Palin campaign spokesperson Nancy Pfotenhauer attempted to defend Gov. Sarah Palin’s (R-AK) debunked claims that Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) has been “palling around” with former radical William Ayers. Referencing a recent New York Times article, Pfotenhauer claimed that if McCain “hung out with somebody who had bombed abortion clinics” it would be a legitimate topic of discussion. She explained:

PFOTENHAUER: The article also concluded is that if Senator McCain had hung out with somebody who had bombed abortion clinics, no one would consider [raising the issue] illegitimate.

Watch it:

Pfotenhauer’s invocation of abortion clinic bombers in defense of McCain is ironic given that McCain has repeatedly voted against protecting Americans from domestic terrorists in the anti-choice movement. On multiple occasions throughout his career, McCain sought to limit the government’s ability to punish violent anti-choice fanatics by:

Voting against making anti-choice violence a federal crime. As the Jed Report notes, McCain voted in 1993 and 1994 against making “bombings, arson and blockades at abortion clinics, and shootings and threats of violence against doctors and nurses who perform abortions” federal crimes.

Opposing Colorado’s “Bubble Law.” McCain said he opposed Colorado’s “Bubble Law,” which prohibited abortion protesters from getting within 8 feet of women entering clinics [Denver Post, 2/27/00]. The law was later upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Voting to allow those fined for violence at clinics to avoid penalties by declaring bankruptcy. NARAL Pro-Chioce America notes that McCain “voted to allow perpetrators of violence or harassment at reproductive-health clinics to avoid paying the fines assessed against them for their illegal acts by declaring bankruptcy.”

Digg It!

Well, there’s ‘hanging around with’ terrorists, and then there is tacitly supporting their activities.

Obviously, having an association with a terrorist is far more damning then allowing them to operate with virtual impunity.

    snark off

  2. ralph the wonder llama Says:

The disinterment of the William Ayres story is clear evidence of how bankrupt of ideas the McSame campaign finds itself.

Is this really the best shot they got?

Americans might be stupid sometimes, but they’re not right-wing stupid.

Suddenly, Carly Fiorina magically appears in a golden parachute to dispel any rumors SHE was a domestic terrorist.

Folks, Obama was about 4 when Bill Ayres was a 60’s radical…how old was McCain during the McKeating 5 scandal?…

    over 50.

Who probably, at that age, had a better understanding of right & wrong?

    Barak Obama

  7. paleolib Says:

Damaging admission by Baroness Pfotenhauer. At this point the Palin/McCain ticket’s support appears to rest mainly with those who approve of abortion clinic bombing.

  8. Mark @ News Corpse Says:

When you see all of the common sense things that McCain voted against, it makes you feel better to know that in a few short weeks America will be voting against him.

At this point, I think ThinkProgress is spending way too much time attacking McCain. Oblivious to the fact that the economy is crashing.

    WAKE UP!

Amanda, while I applaud your moniker’s humor and agree with you that America is pretty much F–ked economically, and yes I also heard about Sherman and the lawmakers who were pretty much threatend with martial law if the bailout were not passed, I would hardly say that TP is “Oblivious” to any of these facts. There have been plenty of stories here about the current crisis. “Attacking” McCain (i.e. pointing out his lies and those of his surrogates) is also important.

    Thank-you, that is all.

  15. jpopphan Says:

Thank you for calling these people what they are: terrorists.

Free speech is one thing, but allowing people to harass women on their way in or out of a health clinic is absurd. How would these people feel if their right to attend the church of their choice were challenged? How would they react to angry cries and shouts at them for exercising their civil rights?

Anti-abortion protesters who hound and harass women are TERRORISTS. Anti-abortion MURDERERS who target and kill doctors are TERRORISTS. Randall Terry and “Operation Rescue” are TERRORISTS.

Keep that up. Right now most Americans believe that all terrorists are Muslims. Far from the truth! Those who sicced dogs and used firehoses on civil rights protesters during the 1960’s were terrorists. The KKK is a terrorist organization. The lynchers and others who went along with them were and are TERRORISTS. America has had more than its fair share of them, to be sure.

Nah, he just recognizes that his base is made up of people who listen to Ann Coulter, O’Reilly, Hannity, Savage and the like and think that domestic terrorism is PERFECTLY acceptable as long as it is only perpetrated against Liberals, Democrats, and people who disagree with them because we clearly deserve it, we’re unAmerican.

Except for that whole Tim McVeigh thing…but we don’t talk about that.

  20. jpopphan Says:

Hey, Amanda @ #16: It is not “attacking” McCain to point out his many lies, obfuscations and spinning of reality. It is a little something called JOURNALISM. Once upon a time, asking a serious question of a presidential or vice-presidential candidate would not have been out of bounds.

If anything, the corporate media has gone out of its way to be friendly to McCain and especially to Palin. Do you think that a Democrat would have received the deference and compassion that the McCain campaign has demanded for Palin? Give me a break.

    “Liberal media”, my ass.

It’s the Obama Family right? Cause I heard from this email that Uncle Joe-Bob sent to me that that Obama is really an A-Rab Muz-Lem in Disguise.

So, how are these fanatical Christian abortion clinic bombers different than the fanatical Muslim bombers…?

  23. jpopphan Says:

Evil Spaniard @ #22…. Why that would be the BIN LADEN family! Long time buds and business partners of the Bush family.

    Here’s another one for ya:

  25. The Dogfather Says:

Oh, no, TP, say it ain’t so — there you go again, pointing the finger backwards to all the things John McSame did in the past that, doggone it, appeared to be appeasing domestic terrorists. But that wasn’t it at all — instead, while the rest of the country was trying to prevent domestic terrorism, John McCain was being his mavericky self by protecting domestic terrorists.

    You betcha.

  26. Evil Spaniard Says:

But thinking of it, second degree association is mean, what about first degree?

At least that’s what their Reader’s Digest abridged Bible tells them.

Sarah Palin has now attacked Barack Obama over his association with Reverend Wright — even though John McCain himself explicitly said this spring that Wright was off limits…
Palin made her comments about Wright in a new interview with columnist Bill Kristol, after he asked her whether Wright was a legit issue.

So, that means Rev. Muthee, the witchhunter, is fair also, right? Where are you, msm?

    F. Von Schiller stated it quite well, “Against stupidity, the Gods themselves struggle in vain”. The descent of McWorse from stupidity to ever greater stupidity is truly pathetic to behold. “They’re god feerin Kristchuns whose love of country spurs them to take corrective action against baby killers.”

    Good one…

We could argue the same for Ayers. After all he was protesting the Vietnam war and 53K civillians were killed during Operation Rolling Thunder alone (the operation during which McCain was shot down and captured). Who needs guilt by association, we have real guilt… McCain is in fact himself a baby killer!

  35. nanlichi Says:

    RUCerious,

Better late than never I guess for my response to the Obsession thread, I had to attend to the funeral of my 401k. Maybe Bro Daryll realized somewhere along the line that the supposed “job” he has is worth too much to risk spending company time disseminating hate.

Or maybe somewhere there’s another bunk bed with a corpse in tennis shoes.

And he left while all of his fellow airmen were putting out the fire, pushing planes off the ship to keep more bombs from going off and administering to the wounded and taking care of the dead. Apparently McCain watched all of it in a safe place and then left the scene with a reporter who became a life-long McCain shill. While his buddies were mopping up after the worst naval disaster in history, McCain was at his buddy’s villa.

Everyone really does need to read the Rolling Stone article. It’s a real eye opener. I learned some things I didn’t know and I thought I knew pretty much everything about McCain.

  44. wegugin Says:

What do you think Ayres was protesting? What was he aiming to stop with his terrorism? The bombing of Vietnam. The killing of innocent civilians including babies. How many millions were killed? raped? maimed?
Did Obama protect him? No. When was Obama in touch with him? 20 years after this activity at least. Where’s the connect? Which is worse?
Oh, that’s right, McCain is better than Obama because he was fighting a just war… hey wait, McCain was killing them too… yeah, that’s right.
Let’s see, how many people has Obama killed?

    G. Gordon Liddy: John McCain Finds His Own Radical

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/ 2008/ 05/ 05/ g-gordon-liddy-john-mccai_n_100134.html

Liddy, advising Branch Davidians how to defend themselves from ATF agents during a radio show:

“If the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms insists upon a firefight, give them a firefight. Just remember, they’re wearing flak jackets and you’re better off shooting for the head.”

Liddy, on the impact Adolf Hitler had on him as a child:

When he listened to Hitler on the radio, it “made me feel a strength inside I had never known before,” he explains. “Hitler’s sheer animal confidence and power of will [entranced me]. He sent an electric current through my body.”

oh wait, im sorry, if your right wing, advising people on how to kill federal agents, and admiring hitler, are just part of the resume..

  46. wiley Says:

Most young people have no idea who Gordon Liddy is and what a truly vile and bizarre character he is. Most young people aren’t going to vote for McCain anyway, but it would be nice to see a synopsis of McCain associations in video—spreading like a virus til it hits the msm. No one could expose Liddy for lunacy better than he himself.

Don’t want to see the alternative press be blinded by the “outsider” mantra (or hypnotic suggestion). McCain has been INSIDE for a long time and surely has far more associations than Obama could rack up in his years (even if he had gotten radical at the age of eight (which is highly unlikely)).

  47. BlacknRight12 Says:

Give me a break-when is the last time you heard of an abortion clinic being bombed! Never mind, most of these people bomb buildings and abortionists kill people! Never mind, most so called bombers actually make sure no one is in the building as not to destroy life, a building can be rebuilt-a human life can’t. I don’t condone bombing buildigs-of course Obama’s buddy does and he killed 7 people! But let’s not worry about that-after all he is only going to run the country. 60 percent of Blacks have been assassinated by abortion upwards of 17 million Blacks! But do you care about that? 7 people have been killed by “pro-lifers” but 50 million have been killed by pro-choicers. Who do you think is more deadly?
