“John McCain would pay for his health plan with major reductions to Medicare and Medicaid, a top aide said,” a move that could result in cuts of $1.3 trillion over 10 years to the programs. McCain “has said little about the proposed cuts, but they are needed to keep his health-care plan ‘budget neutral,’ as he has promised.

Lobbyists are angling to play a greater role as Treasury implements the bailout and Congress debates “how best to strengthen financial market oversight,” The Hill reports. Several law and lobbying firms “announced the creation of financial services task forces that they are marketing to clients and potential clients as multi-disciplinary, one-stop shops for legislative, regulatory and legal advice.”

Over the weekend, both Bill Maher’s film “Religulous” and David Zucker’s right-wing “An American Carol” opened up at the box office. Although “An American Carol” was playing on three times as many screens as “Religulous,” three times as many people went to see Maher’s film, and box office receipts were roughly the same.

The Supreme Court opens a new term today, with one of the first orders of business hearing arguments about limiting lawsuits against tobacco companies. The “business-friendly” Court has so far agreed to hear 41 cases for the 2008-2009 term, with “at least 16 of these as business cases.”

On the trail today: Barack Obama will be in Asheville, NC. John McCain campaigns in Albuquerque, NM, and Sarah Palin hosts a fundraiser in Naples, FL. Due to the death of his mother-in-law, Joe Biden will be off the campaign trail until at least Tuesday.

A “record-breaking season for voter registration drives” ends today with Democrats adding over 800,000 voters to the rolls and Republicans losing 300,000 “in eight of the most tightly fought states in the presidential race: Florida, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Colorado, Iowa, Nevada, New Mexico and New Hampshire.”

Seven aides to Sarah Palin “will now honor subpoenas to testify in the legislative investigation of the Troopergate affair.” The aides had previously challenged the summons but “[a]fter a judge rejected the challenge last week, they decided to testify, Alaska Atty. Gen. Talis J. Colberg said Sunday.”

House Republicans are defending deregulation in a new report, as the House Oversight Committee prepares to examine the causes of the financial crisis. “In the midst of the most serious financial crisis in a generation, some claim that deregulation is entirely to blame,” the report says. “This is simply not true.”

“Cowed by the financial crisis, American consumers are pulling back on their spending, all but guaranteeing that the economic situation will get worse before it gets better. … When the final tally is in, consumer spending for the quarter just ended will almost certainly shrink, the first quarterly decline in nearly two decades.”

Stocks tumbled in Europe and Asia today, a day after Germany and Belgium were “left scrambling to prevent the collapse of two lenders.” “Trading on banking shares were halted in Iceland and Russia suspended both of its exchanges after indexes fell more than 14 percent.”

And finally: Although Congress had been working around the clock on bailout legislation, “some Senators clearly tried to sneak in some fun amid all the pressures of meetings, briefings and cable news appearances.” Roll Call reports that Sen. Johnny Isakson (R-GA) “was spotted stocking up on celebratory libations” at a Capitol Hill bar, and on Thursday morning, Sen. Judd Gregg (R-NH) managed to get in some golfing.

EPA: Rocket Fuel Contaminant Safe for Nation’s Drinking Water

The nation’s top environmental enforcement agency has decided against regulating perchlorate, a component of solid rocket fuel that has been found in the drinking water of millions of Americans.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), employing the age-old D.C. practice of releasing bad news on a Friday afternoon, announced its decision not to implement federal safety standards for the ubiquitous thyroid toxin, which has been found in the bodies of almost every American tested. It has also been found in breast milk, often at levels that may be unsafe for babies.

“The health and well-being of millions of breast-fed babies are being ignored by EPA so the defense industry and their agents in the Pentagon can avoid cleaning up the mess they’ve made,” said Dr. Anila Jacob, MD, MPH, Senior Scientist at EWG.

Perchlorate interferes with the body’s ability to produce thyroid hormones. Inadequate levels of thyroid hormones interfere with normal brain development and growth in babies.

EPA has been under pressure from the Pentagon to overlook the potential health threats posed by perchlorate in order to help defense contractors avoid spending hundreds of millions of dollars to clean up sites contaminated by improper disposal of millions of gallons of perchlorate at rocket test sites, fuel storage facilities and chemical plants.

Perchlorate has leaked from military bases and defense and aerospace contractors’ plants in at least 22 states, contaminating drinking water for millions of Americans. The chemical has also been found in breast milk, dairy milk, produce and many other foods and plants.

    Commondreams

Another complete failure to add to Bush’s ever growing list. He deregulated the EPA to the point they no longer even protect babies….

John McCain’s health plan is all smoke and mirrors. But anybody who can see past the illusion (and it’s really not that difficult) will see that the winners are the for-profit health insurance companies and the losers are the people who can afford to lose the least. Pretty much like all his plans.

If he gets elected, and if he gets his way with his health plan, I look for more bankruptcies, more people squeezed out of the insurance system, and more people using the emergency room as their only source of health care.

I’m wondering how many more people have to be uninsured before the American people overwhelmingly demand universal health care in a voice too loud to ignore.

FYI Religiolus and An American Carol were seen by roughly the same # of people, the receipts were $3.5 and $3.8 mill respectively. But, since Carol opened on 1,639 screens and Religulos only opened on 502 it did roughly 3x the $$ per theater, and one can only imagine what it would have done on more screens!

Americans bent over Friday, allowing Congress to stick a $700 Billion fiasco up it’s collective ass.

Credit Derivative Options, CDO’s, have been a big part of the ‘Wall St Shadow Banking’ market. These ‘hot swaps’ were high risk transactions & the market knew it. They continued to play this fool’s game & made billions. Consumers were never a part of the process, but now are expected to cover the market’s behind while the folks that made the real money are nowhere to be found.

Why should we pay for financiers’ game of risk? Banks & insurance companies have made untold billions betting profits could be made through risk. That’s what they do. Now, they want us to eliminate the risk they found so attractive.
Risky business losses should go to those betting against risk, not those of us who weren’t involved.

Wall Street & Washington…America’s greed personified.

Why the hell should he even look at the common man or care about him and his family?

    __________________________________________________________

And every single one of those eight states is either polling blue right now or is trending that way. And of those eight, only Pennsylvania and New Hampshire went blue in 2004. The GOP will be showing their desperation even more.

Furthermore, if one is to assume that the 300,000 voters lost by the GOP switched their party to Dem, then that means the balance of the new Dem voters (500,000) are new voters — ones who won’t be represented in the mainstream polls. We know that, and I’m sure the GOP does, too.

The trolls are already hard-pressed to come up with new ways to convince people that McCain has this election in the bag. But we can’t get over-confident, even though it looks like people are leaving the McCain/Palin ship like it’s the Titanic. There is still voter caging, Diebold mischief, and other election-stealing dirty tricks to worry about. That — and the Rove smear machine will be working overtime for the next four weeks.

McCain is shaping up to wear the mantle of Hood Robbin’–robbing the poor to give to the middle class and rich. Plundering Medicare and Medicaid to fund his health care plan is genius unless you’re sick and can’t afford health care! By the way, ever pay attention to your medical bills? If you have insurance, doctors accept pay for their bills at steep discounts, but if you have no insurance, you are saddled with the full bill! Now what genius worked that system out? Must have been Hood Robbin’ riding to the rescue of the well-heeled!

  47. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

missmolly..There is still voter caging, Diebold mischief, and other election-stealing dirty tricks to worry about. That — and the Rove smear machine will be working overtime for the next four weeks.

This worries me greatly because according to Brad Friedman (bradblog.com) the Democrats are doing pretty much nothing to prevent this from happening.

I like the idea of some independent organization offering a large reward to anyone who turns in evidence of voting machine mischief. The caging is already a done deal and there isn’t much we can do about it now since most states have closed voter registration. I’m betting there are right wing operatives who would be happy to make some money for reporting on the people who will be programming the voting machines to flip elections. I would be happy to contribute to a fund for rewards.

I discovered that scam when I was without health insurance for a short while. I take three prescriptions on a regular basis. Under my health plan I pay $27.00 for all three. Since my plan has a copay of $20.00 for prescriptions and each of my prescriptions is under that amount, that means I am paying what they cost the pharmacy. But, when I had no health insurance those three prescriptions cost me $67.00. It is ridiculous that they charge the people who can least afford it more for pharmaceuticals and doctor’s visits.

Paul Krugman did a nice job in his column today discussing the McCain “health plan.” It is, in fact, the exact opposite of what we need. Personally. McCain’s, on the other hand, will bring further woes.

The Thai baht has been about staying even with the dollar.
A student of mine, from S. Korea, told me that the dollar is going up, in South Korea. He gets his pay in dollars, here, and he says he kind of wishes he was getting paid in dollars in S. Korea, instead.

How would McCain get any of this crap through Congress? I know there are blue dogs but enough to gut Medicare?

We are being robbed America, right in front of our eyes and we watch in silence. Our new Great Depression will be like nothing we have ever seen, brought to us by the Bu$hCo criminal cabal. They are stealing the silver while walking out the door with smiles on their faces. Take care — and be good to each other.

“An American Carol” is wowing the critics:

David Zucker, who delights in slaughtering sacred cinematic cows, has been involved in some memorable comic spoofs.

“An American Carol” is not one of them. Not even close.

The veteran filmmaker partially responsible (along with brother Jerry Zucker and Jim Abrahams) for “Airplane!” (1980), the greatest silly lampoon of all time, rolls out an absolute, sad-to-experience dud.

Word-of-mouth may get a round a bit on this stinker. But not to the benefit of Voight, Zucker, et al.

Rotten Tomatoes gives it a big splat (although there seems to be some Freeping by the wingers in the reader ratings tab). Director David Zucker seems to have lost his marbles post-9/11 (and his sense of humour in the process, but given the shallowness, not too surprising that dried up….)

    Cheers,

The WSJ reported on the government’s use of satellite surveillance for domestic purposes. The date coincides with the mobilization of the first combat brigade for homeland security purposes. October 1, 2008, the day Freedom died.

Israel is rebranding itself. Let’s hope they don’t go after the Republican’s melamine tainted dog food label.

Despite the bailout package, credit shrinkage is spreading to the stock exchanges. They’re worried about the other party making good on the trade.

None of the root causes of the financial mess have changed.
