On Sunday, top McCain economic adviser Douglas Holtz-Eakin admitted that in order to pay for his health care plan, McCain would slash $1.3 trillion from Medicare and Medicaid over 10 years. But McCain’s running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, appears to be unaware of the proposed cuts. At a rally in Florida today, Palin delcared that McCain will “protect the entitlement programs that Americans depend on”:
And John McCain and I will protect the entitlement programs that Americans depend on - and above all, Social Security. No presidential election cycle is complete without the Democratic candidate coming down here to Florida to try to stir up fear and panic on this issue. And if you expected any better from the guy who promised to get rid of “old-style politics,” you’re in for a disappointment - because Barack Obama has exploited this issue the way he exploits so many others.
So, let there be no misunderstanding: John McCain has always kept his promises to America, and as president, he will keep America’s promise to our senior citizens.
According to the Wonk Room, McCain’s radical cuts to Medicaid and Medicare would put “affordable health care out of reach for millions of seniors, people with disabilities, and low-income families.” Hardly keeping “America’s promise to our senior citizens,” McCain’s proposal would cut $882 billion from the Medicare program and would require cuts in benefits, eligibility or both.
Additionally, Palin’s claim that she and McCain will “protect the entitlement programs” contrasts sharply with her claim last month that she would look for “efficiencies” to cut in the entitlement programs. Also, as Marc Ambinder notes, if McCain and Palin are going to follow through on their pledge to balance the budget, entitlement cuts “would have to be deep.” Palin reiterated the balanced budget promise earlier today.
Does Sarah realize that the federal government is running a half a trillion deficit?
And she still wants to make the Bush tax cuts permanent and cut more corporate taxes and taxes on the wealthiest Americans?
How does she and her running mate plan to balance the budget?
Something's not connecting there, Sarah. Why don't you check your figures again and get back to us, m'kay?
October 7th, 2008 at 6:04 pmJust like McCain, Sarah is such a Maverick that she does not speak for the McCain/Palin campaign!

October 7th, 2008 at 6:12 pmI sure hope that McNumbNuts has gotten a nice piece off Failin' Palin -- or at least copped a feel or two.
She has certainly been a worthless running mate in all other respects.
October 7th, 2008 at 6:18 pmJohn McCain has always kept his promises to America, and as president, he will keep America’s promise to our senior citizens.
Um. His public record, dating back to his first days in the Senate, wold disagree. His entire effing "maverick" image is the result of his habitual habit of claiming a position and then voting against it. He lies to his constituents, the press, his colleagues and the entire country, if anyone happens to be watching.
While some of his more recent lies may be attributable to age and health, HE'S A LIAR! PERIOD!
October 7th, 2008 at 6:25 pmOh gosh darn TP, these clowns contradict themselves from one sentence to the next. You betcha can't expect Sarah of the North to know what Uncle McNutzi's advisors are telling the press. Besides, the crew of rabid savages she has been playing to in Florida aren't real big on rational thought in case you didn't notice.
October 7th, 2008 at 6:26 pmHe ;couldn't even keep his promise to the country not to spill his guts as a POW. He didn't meet his obligation to the men who died on on the Forestal. They all fought the fire and tried to save lives and he sat in a room watching on TV, after he saved himself, and then as soon as he could got himself out of there. He's an egomaniacal selfish pr*ck. And it looks like that pitbull running mate of his is worse.
October 7th, 2008 at 6:30 pmYOU mean the mccain camp is haveing ANOTHER dwiddle dumb and dwiddle dumber moment?? will miracles never cease ...not with these two clowns

Cindy McCain: Obama's Waged "Dirtiest Campaign" in U.S. History
The Tennessean | October 7, 2008 05:14 PM
Cindy McCain said today that she expects her husband to clear the record at tonight's debate and let America know where he truly stands.
McCain, who stopped to visit a half-dozen children at the Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt today, said the presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama has "waged the dirtiest campaign in American history," and her husband Sen. John McCain will use tonight's debate to correct the distortions.

October 7th, 2008 at 6:33 pmIt would hardly matter if Palin knew what McCain's actual plan is. She (along with the entire campaign) would not tell the truth about it. What amazes me is that Douglas Holtz-Eakin would say it.

October 7th, 2008 at 6:35 pmIs it just me or does the plunging stock market make the credit crunch worse? Which makes the stock market go lower? Which makes the credit crunch worse?
Is there a way out of this?
October 7th, 2008 at 6:36 pmFunny - as though we don't all know what Cindy is high on.
October 7th, 2008 at 6:36 pmshayne - i read it in the comments at C&L, the "obama should respond" thread... too many now to sort through... i do think it was a link to a news blog... maybe obscure, local... i didn't go there.
October 7th, 2008 at 6:37 pmSarah Palin is a political whore who will say anything to gain more power (in her small little gold digging mind). The only people who pay her attention are the reichwingnut morons and troglodytes. They are haters who will vote for the sleaziest the Gop can throw at them.
October 7th, 2008 at 6:40 pmMan can she open her mouth. Gape size is an important measure of potential predatory capacity
October 7th, 2008 at 6:40 pmAnd again, I will say that Palin was selected 1) because she's a woman (trying to strip Clinton voters away from Obama), and because she's on the right on cultural issues (attracting those that McCain can't. It doesn't hurt that she's attractive. But she was NOT selected because she is qualified, in any way, for VP. Let alone President if McCain dies or becomes unable to carry out the responsibilities of that office in the first four years. And just as McCain isn't the mastermind behind the Palin selection, neither is McCain the mastermind of his own campaign and governing agenda.
October 7th, 2008 at 6:42 pmKaty, that's not delusion. I believe the clinical name for it is psychological projection.
It's a malady frequently found among the conservative.
October 7th, 2008 at 6:43 pmlooking at google news, didn't find that story, yet, but did see this:
Fla. Sheriff Plays The “Hussein” Card At Palin Event; Campaign Calls Remark “Inappropriate”
From CBS News' Scott Conroy:
Lee County Sheriff Mike Scott took the stage moments ago as one of the introductory speakers at a rally here for Sarah Palin. After delivering brief remarks in support of Palin, Sheriff Scott flipped the switch and used Barack Obama’s middle name in order to incite the crowd of thousands of people who have already gathered here.
“On Nov. 4, let’s leave Barack Hussein Obama wondering what happened,” the law enforcement officer said.
UPDATE: Palin campaign spokesperson Tracey Schmitt issued the following statement on Sherriff Scott’s remarks: “We do not condone this inappropriate rhetoric which distracts from the real questions of judgment, character, and experience that voters will base their decisions on this November.”

Feds investigating sheriff after 'Hussein' remark

LEE COUNTY: Lee County Sheriff Mike Scott may have more to worry about than just the court of public opinion. Federal investigators are now looking into whether Scott broke the law by campaigning for John McCain.
Officials with the U.S. Office of Special Counsel say they have received so many phone calls from the public that they launched an investigation into Sheriff Scott on Tuesday.
The question is - did he use his position as sheriff to influence an election? If so, he could be in violation of a federal election law called the Hatch Act.

Which promise would that be, Sarah! The one he made yesterday, or the opposite one he made today? How long til she gets a clue? This woman must have the longest learning curve, ever! When is she going to get that it isn't enough to just memorize this mornings' official talking points? She has to read (and comprehend) a couple of national newspapers every day-The front page and business sections, not just the "Style" section and the comics- and she has to find out what both McCain and other campaign advisors said to the media yesterday, that she's going to have to respond to, and be in line with today. I supposed it's possible that it's not entirely her fault that she can't keep up. If her staff is as inept as the rest of the McSame campaign. But you'd think that "Sarah Barracuda" would be tough enough to demand superlative staffing and prep. Nah... I think she's just a mean dingbat who doesn't know when she's in over her head.

and under his breath, "Neither do we condemn this rhetoric."
October 7th, 2008 at 6:51 pmHmm, so Cindy, this means that pointing out McCain's documented record in the Keating Five scandal is dirtier than Karl Rove telling people your husband had fathered an illegitimate Black child? Or maybe the drugs made you forget all about 2000.
October 7th, 2008 at 6:54 pmsorry for the extended OT, last one:
Lee County Sheriff Mike Scott, sometimes sarcastic and always outspoken, vows he will not apologize for calling Barack Hussein Obama by his middle name during a rally Monday for vice presidential hopeful Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. Here’s a bit of Scott’s interview with The News-Press and news-press.com columnist Sam Cook on Tuesday:
[...]
• Motivation: “There was no motivation. That was it. That’s his name. Instead of saying Sen. Obama, I said Barack Hussein Obama. There wasn’t really an intent or motive. That’s his name. To me, it seems simple, but it’s become so complicated.’’

you're correct, ralph... i was posting faster than thinking...
but, could it be BOTH?
October 7th, 2008 at 6:58 pmPaul Krugman, on Countdown last night, said a better measurement of the credit markets was NOT the stock market but the yield on U.S. Treasury bonds and securities. The stock market volatility certainly results in large sell offs of equities and putting the money in the "full faith of the U.S. government," because investors have a tendency to panic. Naturally, this leads to an on-going downward spiral of value of either equities or yields. The real issue is lack of confidence and trust...in the financial system and in the government. It doesn't help when you see Paulson and Bernanke in panic mode and the talking heads on all news programs in panic mode too. And the "boy who yelled wolf" is still President and still telling us all that "it's going to be alright."
There's only one way this can be helped, and that's jobs and people able to pay their mortgages and spend to support the rest of the economy. It's called a jobs program and would have been far better, probably even in the short term, in saving us, than throwing $700B away + the previous $350B to buy junk from the investment bankers.
October 7th, 2008 at 6:59 pmDespite the Palin-McCain campaign's most recent mendacious commercials, it is THEY who are making a campaign of lies and innuendos. They are shameless and unprincipled opportunists.

“What I have found is that it’s necessary to make sure the American people understand what we have to say, what we stand for as a husband and wife, and what we will do for the American people if we’re lucky enough to be elected,” Cindy McCain said.

Since when in the hell is the presidency ever considered a husband-wife endeavor ?
October 7th, 2008 at 7:00 pmKaty - glad to hear that Sheriff Scott is going to be investigated for a "possible" violation of the Hatch Act. This guy is the sheriff of MY county. And I was one of those folks that called to inquire about the legality of this. His rationale that he's on duty 24/7, 365 days per year doesn't mean do-do. He isn't allowed to do what he did. Needless to say, he was up there, bigger than life, wearing his uniform and badge. He can't even say he was speaking as an ordinary American citizen.
