Last month, MSNBC reported that up until the last minute, former Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich was telling GOP lawmakers “in the strongest possible language” to vote against the $700 billion bailout legislation. Speaking at the National Press Club later that same day, Gingrich took umbrage at the charge, saying, “I was actually reluctantly trying to help it get through.”
Gingrich’s claim now seems to be less than honest. In a new piece on Human Events, Gingrich actually urges Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) to distance himself from the bailout that he allegedly helped push through:
If Senator McCain is not prepared to separate himself from the Bush-Paulson economic program, he has no opportunity to win.
The country is deeply fed up with the Bush presidency and angry about the Paulson bailout. If McCain is confused or uncertain about how bad this economic performance is, he will never get the country to listen to him.
Gingrich’s views have been practically impossible to pin down on this issue. Some of his past positions on the bailout:
– Sept. 29: “I’m not sure if I were in the Congress I could vote against it.”
– Sept. 29: “The vote today indicated that even when they’d worked for five days to try to improve what was really a pretty terrible original plan that [Paulson] sent up, it still couldn’t get a majority in the House.”
– Sept. 23: At a press conference Tuesday, Gingrich said the bailout proposal is a “watershed event” that puts the credibility of the GOP presidential nominee on the line. If McCain plays the maverick card, Gingrich said, the bailout will become the “Obama-Bush plan.”
So, to summarize: Gingrich was against the bailout, and then for it, and then against it, and then for it, and now against it again. According to congressional conservatives, all of this is “the opening salvo of Newt Gingrich’s presidential campaign four years hence.”
Don't you have a sick wife to divorce, Newtie?
October 8th, 2008 at 3:54 pmNewt has been making himself highly visible lately. Did he get tired of being under that rock where he belongs?
October 8th, 2008 at 3:55 pmNewt is a total tool.
The bailout plan was a complete ripoff of the American people.
Somehow these two things go hand in hand.

October 8th, 2008 at 3:56 pmUncle Ho: The snark, it rises...

It's like a Republican MO, isn't it? Weird how the "family values" group is always full of divorce, alcoholism, and teen pregnancy.
October 8th, 2008 at 3:59 pmNewt is part of the current problem. He was one of the deregulating champions back in the 90's. McSame needs more than telling another big fat lie about the rescue plan to get his old senile self elected.
October 8th, 2008 at 4:00 pmNewtie is such weenee.
Sorry I don't have any more pithy thing to say about this scum.
October 8th, 2008 at 4:01 pmSo the newt has flip-flopped?
Word is that he is considering a run for prez in 2012 -- sad fact is: many people will vote for the morally bereft, ethically challenged liar.
Also -- Thom Hartmann just reported that Rush Lintball is suggesting the meme for conservatives on 11/5 and ging forward -- that Obama won because the election was "stolen."
We fool ourselves if we think the sh!t is ending when Obama wins -- we should expect relentless second guessing, criticism, if not an outright conspiracy lies to haunt Obama throughout his term.
October 8th, 2008 at 4:02 pmThe sad thing about Gingrich is that he still thinks that he is relevant.
October 8th, 2008 at 4:03 pmMy guess is Grinchrich hoped to make, or save money with the original bailout. When he lost money he got mad and claimed to be against it all along.
October 8th, 2008 at 4:07 pmMarie, this isn't the first time Limbot has made a proclamation like this. Remember this one?
Limbot claimed that Obama got the nomination because the Democrats were afraid to say no to the Black guy.
October 8th, 2008 at 4:08 pmNewt coudn't get elected for dog catcher.
October 8th, 2008 at 4:09 pmCaption - Hehehe, they can't see this invisible joint...sheya!!!
October 8th, 2008 at 4:10 pmNewt and Songbird Johny are cut from the same cloth. They will say whatever is necessary to win and the truth or past positions be damned. It would ordinarily take a free and fair press to inform the public and protect our democracy. However, the press has become nothing more than lap dogs to their corporate masters and incapable of fulfilling their role. Indeed, given what happened at Palin's rally yesterday, I am sure that we will see Brown Shirts clubbing any truth out of the press.
This is the state of our public, political discourse. George Orwell could not have written the script better.
October 8th, 2008 at 4:16 pmHere come Newt Cottontail, flippity floppy down the campaign train, hippety hoppity happily looking to run in 2012.
October 8th, 2008 at 4:19 pmNewter is gearing himself up (again) for a run at the White House, probably fantasizing about Palin on the ticket with him in 2012. Conservatives still seem to think he's a brainiac and all he needs to do is provide a moving target for everyone else. He can selectively quote from anything he said previously depending on the audience. And he's not really letting anyone pin him down about whether the bailout was a good thing or not.
Heck, he's probably fantasizing about Palin being the next Mrs. Gingrinch and running as the first married ticket. The current Mrs. G better start watching her health; if she gets sick, bam! She's outta there, dontcha know?
October 8th, 2008 at 4:20 pmA proven liar and hypocrite on both sides of an issue: aka a former republican leader. Someone should tell these moths balls that their expiration date is long past.
October 8th, 2008 at 4:28 pmNewt running for 2012? Might as well dig up Ronnie. It's a bad time to be (R) when all you have are has-beens, no up-and-comers, the Grumpy Old Party.
October 8th, 2008 at 4:35 pmAhhhh. Welcome back, to one of our great friends from the '90s. No, not Newt, but Paul Begala's favorite example of the loose (to be charitable) relationship between Republican leaders and reality: BizarroNewt. You know, the guy who railed against gov't regulation of the pharmaceutical industry by blaming the FDA for the deaths of thousands of Americans annually because they held up approval of a life-saving new heart pump from Europe. Two problems with this: 1) No one had ever submitted said pump for FDA approval because, 2) Studies in Europe had shown it to be totally useless, if not down-right dangerous when compared to traditional CPR.
Did this stop BizarroNewt? Of course not. Facts about lives not saved were far less important than having a shocking (and it would be...if it were in any way true) anecdote about the big, evil government stifling the life-saving and altruistic efforts of Corporate America.
Why won't this nut just go away?
October 8th, 2008 at 4:36 pmThe payoff is a bad plan,
paulson has the audacity to tell other countries what to do, advising other countries on "Wednesday urged intensified global cooperation to stabilize financial markets and said countries must be careful not to harm one another while they guard their own interests."
Then this little ditty, "Paulson recited the numerous measures that members of the G7 -- the United States, Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan -- and others have taken to try to halt plunging stock prices and rebuild confidence, but said more was needed."
Is this the same as the G8?
October 8th, 2008 at 4:41 pmSo, what does he expect McCain to do? He can't go on the next debate and say "I suspended my campaign to help pass a bill I don't like." He has already been taking credit for its passage.
October 8th, 2008 at 4:43 pmWhy does this guy even matter? He's not exactly anyone that's very electable these days. His opinion doesn't mean sqwat. He's past history.
October 8th, 2008 at 4:43 pmThe fed cut interest rates by 1.5% today. That means that the interest I currently get on my MMA is gonna drop as well. I would just like to take a moment and thank Newt for having a hand in causing the current melt down we are in because I really didn't need that extra income anyways. Thanks again, Newt.
October 8th, 2008 at 4:54 pmLoop holes in the payoff plan.
October 8th, 2008 at 4:57 pmSo, if I have this straight, nailing down Newt's position on the bailout is like trying to nail jello to a wall.
Or something like that one...

Actually, it was .5%, along with the European Central Bank, the Bank of England and the central banks of Canada and Sweden. And perhaps we can better understand the protests against globalization, including the economic power of the the WTO or the World Bank or the International Monetary Fund. Brings to mind some interesting theories about the New World Order. I'm posting a link only because I think they are interesting; not necessarily that I believe any or all of the ideas. On the other hand, who knows for sure?

October 8th, 2008 at 5:24 pmWho elected Newton to speak for them. Oh that's right, NOBODY.
October 8th, 2008 at 5:47 pm#27
October 8th, 2008 at 5:48 pmNaomi Klein speaks about the WTO and the World Bank in her book The Shock Doctrine -- and yes, it sheds some light on understanding world wide protests we have witnessed in the past.
suprise, suprise...
the AIG executives used your bailout money for an excursion, or an escape, at a posh spa, at $400,000 to california..
how do you like that?
where is the accountability, who is following the money to see how and when they are going to bail out the US government out of the 10 trillion dollar deficit??? The taxpayers are being screwed, royally..on bush and cheney's way out..speaking of cheney...that guy disappeared?..out of sight, out of mind? whats he up to?
follow the money
October 8th, 2008 at 7:14 pmNewt was for the bailout before he was against it and/or he was against it before he was for it. This is all a big shock.
Be sure to visit his campaign website at nochance2012.org.
