Lieberman: ‘I Worry About’ Whether Obama Has ‘The Right Stuff To Bomb Iran’

In an interview with the right-wing magazine Newsmax yesterday, Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) called Sen. Barack Obama’s worldview “naive.” Asked if Obama had “the right stuff to bomb Iran if it came to that level,” Lieberman replied, “I worry about that“:

ASHLEY MARTELLA: Alirght, Iran has sworn to exterminate Israel as well as attack the United States. Does Barack Obama have the right stuff to bomb Iran if it came to that level?

SEN. JOE LIEBERMAN: Well, I worry about that. I worry that Sen. Obama’s world view is naive. Sen. McCain has been around awhile. He’s learned some things. I’ve traveled the world with him a lot. He’s, he will be the kind of president who our allies will trust, but who our enemies will fear. And in a dangerous world, al Qaeda, Iran, Iran trying to get a nuclear weapons, we want a president who our enemies will fear. I don’t believe that Sen. Obama will be that kind of president. I believe he’s naive to think that people like Ahmadinejad and Tehran Iran will somehow become America’s friend just by…

MARTELLA: Talking to them unilaterally.

LIEBERMAN: Talking to them in a warm embrace and a cup of tea. It’s not going to work that way. Sen. McCain knows there’s evil as well good in the world and he’ll confront evil directly in order to protect our security and that of our allies.

Watch it (starts around 4:45):

Lieberman has never been shy about how the prospect of bombing Iran is a major issue for him. In June 2007, he declared that “we have to be prepared to take aggressive military action against the Iranians.” In May 2008, he said that airstrikes against Iran were “a distinct possibility.”

As for McCain, in April 2007, he sang, “Bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran.”

Digg It!

Actually, the last thing this country needs right now is a President who our enemies will fear. Instead, what we need is a President who our enemies will respect, which we haven't had in 8 years and which Grampy McMoron wouldn't be either.

Come to think of it, I'd settle for having a President who our enemies wouldn't ridicule; haven't had one of them in 8 years either...

Well, I believe you're literally insane to think that we will get what we want by not talking to them. I'll take the chance of naivete over complete insanity any day; however, Iran was working with the Bush Administration early on with Afghanistan and they have been giving every indication that they want to talk to us, so how naive is it really?

It makes me sick that kids growing up today may only know of our country as being in constant war and starting world war (whatever # we're on) is not exactly helpful to anyone except the war profiteers.

Lieberman's ideal vision of the Middle East is a vast expanse of scorched earth, leaving only Israel and Saudi Arabia untouched. If he's looking for a presidential candidate who shares that view, he's found it in McCain.

Obama's vision is far more realistic, and has the best LONG-TERM interests of the United States in mind (not that bombing and destruction has done anything for us in the short-term). Something that neither Lieberman nor McCain can understand.

    Damn straight!!!

We really need to start taking all these stupid memes and throwing them right back in right-wingers' faces!

Obama, naive on Iran? You know what I think is naive? The belief that every problem or adversary can be dealt with militarily.

Obama, not supportive of the troops? You know who I don't think supports the troops? Someone who gets a "D" on his report card from the IAVA, like McCain.

Obama, poor judgement? You know who I think has poor judgement? Someone who has supported George W. Bush 95% of the time in the last 2 years, like McCain.

Obama, hates America? You know who I think hates America? Someone who supports a foreign policy and a war strategy in Iraq that is opposed by over 70% of America's citizens, like McCain.

Obama, lives like an elitist celebrity? You know who I think resembles an elitist celebrity? Someone who cannot refer to their opponent by name ("that one"), who dumps his sick wife and marries a beer heiress a month later, whose beer heiress wife is addicted to pills of various types, someone who owns 7 homes and 12 cars (or however many there are), someone whose personal wealth (through their marriage) is around $100m, someone who vacations in exotic locales and hob-knobs with the rich and famous, someone whose economic advisor refers to ordinary Americans struggling economically as "whiners," someone who assumes an average citizen in the audience "has never heard of Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac before," someone who assumes the average American's grasp of geography is as poor as his own (Pakistan-Iraq border)...like MCCAIN.

Anyone else have some more to add?

AFAIK the only "proof" of this is a widespread mistranslation where Ahmadinejad was translated to have said "Israel must be wiped off the map".

But what he really said was "The Imam [Khomeini] said this regime occupying Jerusalem must vanish from the page of time" and he said it while speaking of other regimes vanishing from the page of time like Soviet Union and the Shah. Hes not a big fan of the state of Israel but hes not talking about annihilating Israel with nuclear weapons.

I dont know of any other instances where Ahmadinejad or any other Iranian person of importance is said to have threatened to exterminate Israel.

  60. kevinbrown Says:

What Joe LIEberman does not mention – in fact NO ONE in American politics and media ever ever mention - is the FACT that Israel does not need the US to bomb Iran since Israel possesses enough NUCLEAR weapons to vaporize Iran. Why is this FACT never ever mentioned in the discussions about Iran and Nuclear weapons? Could the FACT that Israel is the 4th. largest NUCLEAR power in the world be the reason why Iran is trying to acquire Nuclear weapons?? Why is this such a taboo subject in America? Only 2 American Presidents have ever acknowledged the FACT that Israel possesses Nuclear weapons; Jimmy Carter - who was labelled a “traitor” for doing so - and John F Kennedy who – at the time of his assassination – was quietly working to stop Israeli nuclear proliferation. All other Presidents have denied knowledge of Israel’s Nuclear weapons and in doing so have lied to the American people about a fundamental Middle East fact.

As Nalogous said. I am more worried the next Pres has the right stuff to NOT be stampeded into another ill advised miliatary catastrophe because power wants another war. The Iranians dont HAVE to be a military problem. They are not Arabs and feel isolated in a middle east where racial politics is huge. They would LOVE to have decent relations with us as a hedge against another racial war like the Iran/Iraq war of the 80s. A huge portion of their population are young people that love our movies and have no problem with Western culture. If we engage them diplomatically, give a diplomatic presence in their country and let it be known we wouldnt allow the Iranian military to slaughter the Iranian people, if we dial down the rhetoric so their populace is no longer terrified we are going to invade them because of stupid irresponsible rhetoric like Liebermans. The natural course for their country as the population becomse bolder and the demographics work themselves out is a much more moderate Iran. If the people think we wont let their military slaughter them and if THEIR MILITARY thinks we wont let their people be slaughtered we will almost certainly see a natural democratic upwelling. We should remember IRAN had the first realy democratic country in the Islamic middle east before WE overthrew it. This is a problem that hostile belligerance has a much higher probability of making worse than of solving

As a Jew I've listened to Lieberman’s ravings about Palin. This is for him.

As you attend Yom Kipper services, the Day of Atonement, the day Jews stand before God to ask forgive for our transgressions, start searching your soul. In our faith, God can forgive all transgressions against God but not for wrongful acts against other people. You, Mr. Lieberman, you have committed transgressions against every Jew. You have sold yourself to the CNP, the ultra conservative Right who’s only purpose for Jews is to convert them to Evangelical theology or have them burn in hell. Supporting Palin confirms that you have embraced this theology. Standing next to her as she smiles amid shouts of “Terrorist” and “Kill Him”, you sheepishly shout that “God willing, this is our next Vice President”. Whose God are you referring to? Certainly not the God of Abraham? Who are you Joe Lieberman? How can you, the husband of a wife of holocaust survivors, look in the mirror or face your wife, your children, and your family? You are no more a Jew than Dobson, Hagey, LaFay and all the rest of them. There were Jews during the Holocaust that sided with Nazis, "Hitler's Jewish Soldiers". You, Mr. Lieberman are a foot soldier for the CNP.

As the gates are closing and God has determined who will be written this year in the book of life, don't look for Joe Lieberman. You are no longer a Jew; not yet a Christian. You are no longer a Democrate or Independent ; not yet formally a Republican. You have sold your soul, integrity, and everything that is important to our faith. Listen to the sound of the Shofar. Open your ears and your heart Mr. Lieberman. Start doing the right thing. Not the RIGHT thing!

  76. EndAllWars Says:

I know the way Lieberman and all neocons operate is based on FEAR. Fear at home. Fear abroad. Creating enemies. Fear fear fear.

I particularly don't care about the way these chicken hawks try to act manly, which is, they flex their muscles alot for tiny little countris, but bag it when it comes to powers that can fight back. It's like bullies who push women and children around and then shut up when they see a big guy. These people are not particularly tough or smart. Case in point is Bush. Neither tough, nor smart.

Bush tried to be that man whom the world, and the enemies he created, "fear". Guess what. With his bellicose, bull in a china shop approach, he has turned this country into a paper tiger whom nobody fears nor respects anymore. This sort of medival thinking has been extremely harmful to the country.

Lastly, if I am someone like Ahmadinejad, I'd be a lot more wary in the presence of someone like Obama who looks bigger, tougher, younger, smarter, more nimble than washed up, shriveled up fools like McCain who collaborated with the Vietnamese or the recovering alcoholic Bush.

  77. ShorelineCT Says:

Connecticut voters have soured on Sens. Joseph I. Lieberman...

..The telephone survey of 500 people was conducted Sept. 19-23 by Pulsar Research and Consulting. MOE of plus or minus 4.4%.

When asked to rate the jobs they are doing as senator, Lieberman and Dodd each drew higher negatives than
positives, with Lieberman faring the worst...

44% of residents rated Lieberman negatively, saying he is doing a fair (26%) or poor (28%) job. Thirty-seven percent viewed him positively, giving an excellent (10%) or good (27%) rating.

The poll found that Lieberman, a registered Democrat who relied on Republicans and unaffiliated voters for
his re-election in 2006, has lost much of his independent base.

61% of Republicans viewed him favorably, compared with 23% of Democrats and 37% of independents.

He was viewed unfavorably by 30% of Republicans, 69% Democrats and 53% of independents.

"He's really polling as a weak Republican, rather than a wounded Democrat," said Barnes

  78. Doc Rock Says:

I worry about Lieberman having a brain tumor.

  79. leoeris Says:

Hey Joe, just MAYBE we won't have to Bomb Iran! Think of that! A diplomatic solution?? Wow. Crazy talk these days, but you know, it just might work!

  80. wiley Says:

Iran isn't a threat to U.S. or Israel.People who think that if they don't, at every point, have an advantage, they they are victims at a supreme disadvantage have got some screws they need to tighten. Iran is competition for a pipeline from the Caspian Sea. Iran might be able to defend itself from an Israeli attack. They might be able to produce an atomic bomb. This somehow constitutes unmitigated evil that must be crushed.

What creating enmity where there is none and ordering the dropping of bombs from high flying aircraft has got to do with "having balls" escapes me. Lieberman is a raving coward.

  81. vanron100 Says:

    Leiberman is one 'scary dude'.

John McCain wants him as his future Secretary of State( 'war', in leiberman's case).

Over 80% of the people of Israel want an actual peace settlement throughout the Middle East. Leiberman, the powerful Israel Lobby group here in the US, and most of the 'older' politicians in Israel do not - they actually like it the way it is (the military/industrial machine that has become increasingly more and more powerful starting in the 1950's - President Ike warned of this in his last address to the nation).

We need a new generation of politicians, like the newly elected PM in Israel, who along with Obama can affect real 'Changes' - away from a military solution to a peaceful/diplomatic one.

  82. enough Says:

With regard to Obama and bombing, I worry only that Obama has courage enough to NOT bomb anyone. But I hardly worry at all on that front.

What I really fear that some October surprise will give the Republicans an opportunity to start some dreadful conflagration.

  83. Winski Says:

One can also question whether Liberwoky has the brains to STFU since he sounds dumber and dumber by the minute...

  84. scobra Says:

I could really care less what LIEBERMAN has to say. I have always found him repulsive and I seriously wonder where his loyalties really lie. Probably with Joe LIEBERMAN!! Ahmadinejad is always pretty darn straightforward and honest when he talks. When dealing with this whole subject - the worst thing one can be is honest and tell the truth. Israel stole the land of Palestine and became a mean-spirited apartheid state and Ahmadinejad calls them out on it. Iraq attacked Iran with US support. In our stupidity, we decide to not even talk to them as the criminal bankers call for more war so they can become that much more wealthy and they spread all kinds of lies and deceit. We should all be ashamed.

  85. republicanSScareme Says:

Everyone I know wants to try Joe Lieberman for treason. Many are willing to skip the trial.

  86. lowsalteen Says:

Who is sen. joe lieberman, representing in conecticut? dems, independents, or repubs. I worry that he has lost the people trust in just who in conecticut is his base?
