AIG cancels post-bailout party in California, says it will have no more.

Earlier this week, the House Oversight Committee revealed that just one week receiving an $85 billion bailout, AIG executives went on a retreat to a luxury resort, spending nearly $500,000 on manicures, facials, pedicures, and massages, among other things. After being ridiculed for the vacation, AIG announced today that the parties are over. From an announcement they issued this afternoon:

234ga.jpgEarlier today, AIG announced an important policy change – one that we wanted to be sure you knew about. A short time ago, our Chairman and CEO Ed Liddy said that he has ordered the immediate cancellation of all outside meetings, conferences, and recognition events across AIG, except those that are required by law or that are deemed absolutely critical to sustain our ongoing business needs.

Today, AIG canceled a specific party, originally scheduled for next week at the Ritz-Carlton in California’s Half Moon Bay, “after a re- evaluation of the costs under the new circumstances,” according to spokesman Joe Norton.

Does this mean homeowners will get bailed out?
    … I didn’t think so.

  2. tettes says:

What a joke. They had to get caught with their hands in the cookie jar before they changed their practices.

    Amazing.

    – - Whoa, I’ve been there. We taxpayers sure know how to be GREAT hosts.

  4. Mr Blifil says:

Such is the power of Obama. He says timeline in Iraq for withdrawal, damned if they don’t draw one up. He says “AIG execs should be fired,” they call off the perks. I can’t remember a single politician in my lifetime who was singlehandedly able to influence policies on the basis of his powers of argumentation.

  5. Jim Wolf359 says:

Fine and dandy. Now, how about giving $500,000.00 of your Bailout back to the Treasury?

  6. Doc Rock says:

They ought to start saving for lawyers’ fees.

  7. Another Joe says:

Shouldn’t surprise anyone – the bastards haven’t seen the light though. What do you want to bet they decided to plough that money into mcinsane’s campaign instead.

Does anyone believe this group has anything more than contempt for the masses that are bailing them out?

  8. Zooey says:

I say we keep an eye on the bastids — can’t trust ‘em as far as we could kick ‘em.

  9. enough says:

No. There’s one party still to come. It’s the BYOB BLAST at my place when the AIG execs go to jail.

I’m a VERY ANGRY old lady who needs to retire but will have to get an electric wheel chair and keep going to work because AIG blew my lifetime saving.

    My anger burns.

  10. tarazan says:

What are these executives at AIG celebrating anyway?
Stockholders lost most of their money.
Bond holders did not see any yet.
    The company went under.
AIG is using bailout money paid by taxpayers
These people should be held accountable to people for what they did.

  11. pete says:

Sorry about the OT but, this is too good not to share. Certain persons are “outraged” because Newsweek didn’t retouch a photo of Bible Spice. Funny. I don’t recall hearing any “outrage” over various demeaning caricatures of prominant Dems including Hillary and Sen. Obama.

Reminds me of one of Lewis Lapham’s stories. During the Great Depression, while hordes of people stood in bread lines, the super-rich threw a party. They flooded the Ritz in NYC, so they could float around on gondolas while mingling.

Never are you so rich, than when so many others are so poor.

    Rat bastards.

Gee, couldn’t one of the multi-millionaire AIG chief executives fork over the money to fund the AIG festivities? C’mon guys, pony up. But don’t use any taxpayer “bail-out” funds. Dig into your own golden parachute nest egg and pay. It’d only be fair.

Brother can you spare another $700 Billion?

  15. SP Biloxi says:

Plain ridiculous. First, AIG uses bailout money to party on our dime in California and now they cancel their what? Post-bailout party? AIG is a piece of work. The biggest pimp financial institution.

  17. Another Joe says:

SP Biloxi, they may be the biggest pimp but their biggets whore is the bush family. Next looks like mcinsane, but don’t kid yourself, we haven’t seen the last of them yet.

  18. Another Joe says:

MCMetal, well at least they appear to have given up MORE parties – chimpy still golfs and never actually quit.

  19. MCMetal says:

They’ll figure out how to get around this edict ………..Guaranteed

  20. katy says:

of course they did “the right thing”…
fortunately, the RITZ can probably suffer the loss of business…
i do worry about the many vendors who will lose out…
but “times is tough all over”…

  21. RUCerious says:

What! No $100 bills to light cigars with! How uncivilized!

  22. had enough says:

Did the administration beg the public for these bailouts to avoid bankruptcy to keep this out of the public eye… to avoid EXPOSING just how bad the financial status is in bankruptcy court for all to see? Did the plugged dike break before bush could leave, not after as he had hoped? And will the Homeland Brigade be enough to control the masses in the event on uncontrollable mayhem?

I am beyond angry and hold out no hope in seeing any of these criminals get what is coming to them … legally that is. One has to wonder just how bad it is going to get as at one time no one could imagine what we have now. At this point, I only hope for a peaceful turnaround in our economy, government and well being.

  25. Kane says:

    The party is over.

  26. MrSquirrel says:

    How magnanimous of them.

  27. SP Biloxi says:

Another Joe, you are right. The Bush family are the best little Whorehouse in Texas. As George W. Bush’s legacy goes up in flames, there may be another Bush relative to surface in the future. Very sad that capitol hill for 8 years was Sex in the City version.

  29. wiley says:

Wow. The Alaskan Supreme Court just decided that there’s no reason not to go on with the investigation, so they’re just going to file their own pre-emptive report.

Damn. I’m running out of adjectives here.

  30. Gregor Samsa says:

    Yeah, that’s the Republican way:

When under suspicion, clear all doubt on your ethical standing by clearing yourself of any wrongdoing, all the while accusing everyone else of “playing politics”, and “smears and innuendos”.

Oh, and don’t forget of accusing your opponents of “palling around with terrorists”. Needless to say, you need not provide any evidence for *your* smears and innuendos…

  31. Another Joe says:

You are right, SP Biloxi, whorehouse, but we need to get real here too. THIS IS NOT ABOUT THE BUSHES. They are not actually an elite family that is in control of America or the world.

Real change will demand looking past the morons in front of the cameras.

People need to look past simple answers – do you know who the bush family really is? Please watch Hidden in Plain Sight: Meet the Bush Family

But that’s not all, please go to your favorite video service – google does rank from many sources, and look for more on this family and the interests they represent. HERE’S another interesting perspective.

  32. Another Joe says:

Gregor Samsa – exactly. Of course, only possible because the mighty wurlitzer “catapults the propaganda”. These charades only work because of the media echo-chamber.

Which is proof that this is not really just about repugs – others are actually responsible for the fact that they get away with this.

Too many assume that the morons in front of the cameras are responsible for all the treason, war crimes, crimes against humanity, and looting of the federal treasury.

In reality, other interests are behind the success of these tactics. And I am not talking about kkkarl either – small players really.

It is laughable on its face that an AWOL abusive alcoholic/cocaine addict was fraudulently hoisted into the White House via 2 stolen elections because of how well he, rove, and cheney duped the mainstream media.

  33. upnorth says:

So much integrity here. Now that ya caught me I will stop being bad! When do the trials start for defrauding the American people and government? The evidence is there! Oh sorry I forgot the rule of law was abolished by the current Republican Admin!

  34. vinylspear says:

I hope they had cake at their party.
Can’t have a really fun party without cake…

While the masses contemplate rioting…(they should anyway)

  36. ealvarez12 says:

This is almost as bad a terrorist activity as far as I’m concerned given the current financial catastrophe. I think these executives should be placed in Guantanamo Bay and stripped of their assets, which would then be reinvested into dropped loans. This wouldn’t solve the financial crisis but I would love to read about it the newspaper.
