Cindy McCain: Vietnam vets with PTSD were 18-year-olds who didn’t know what they were doing.

During a recent interview with Marie Claire, Sen. John McCain’s (R-AZ) wife Cindy suggested that her husband has never had PTSD symptoms because “he was trained.” She also added that symptoms such as “cold sweats in the middle of the night” are reserved for the “the 18-year-olds who were drafted”:

cindy2web2.jpgQ: You met your husband after his POW days. To what extent is that still with you – or is it a part of history?

McCAIN: My husband will be the first one to tell you that that’s in the past. Certainly it’s a part of who he is, but he doesn’t dwell on it. It’s not part of a daily experience that we experience or anything like that. But it has shaped him. It has made him the leader that he is.

Q: But no cold sweats in the middle of the night?

McCAIN: Oh, no, no, no, no, no. My husband, he’d be the first one to tell you that he was trained to do what he was doing. The guys who had the trouble were the 18-year-olds who were drafted. He was trained, he went to the Naval Academy, he was a trained United States naval officer, and so he knew what he was doing.

Digg It!

    – - Rick Davis’ campaign genius at work! Thanks, Rick!

Btw, Cindy, your hubby finished 884 out of 889 in his Naval Academy class, so those drafted 18-year olds weren’t far behind him.

  4. RantingTommy says:

Look, all this silliness is just that.

It comes down to a simple choice between economic models.

Democrats believe an economy should be built from the bottom up because they know that when the people that live paycheck to paycheck get more, THEY SPEND IT. IMMEDIATELY.

Republicans believe an economy is built from the top down and that giving rich people more money will create jobs. The last 8 years are THE FINAL PROOF that this does not work.

My husband… He was trained, he went to the Naval Academy, he was a trained United States naval officer, and so he knew what he was doing.

Is that why he crashed so many planes? He knew what he was doing? NO PTSD, eh? Is that why he referred to American citizens as “my fellow prisoners”?

  13. jpopphan says:

First, let’s all remember that Cindy McCain is a prescription drug addict, so it is difficult to know if she’s telling the truth or not. Maybe she’s craving some oxycontin or something.

Many Vietnam veterans, regardless of how young they may have been when they served in Vietnam, have PTSD and mental health issues as a consequence of their service.

Do I believe that John McCain has never had any issues with PTSD? Hell no. Anyone who can survive as long in a North Vietnamese POW camp as McCain did simply cannot come out of that experience unscathed.

Cindy McCain is a LIAR. John McCain is a LIAR. Sarah Palin is a LIAR. George W. Bush is a LIAR. NONE of these people deserve to be taken at their word. Show us the medical records, McCain, that show you never had PTSD issues. Given how angry McCain is all the time, can he really expect us to swallow that claim? I don’t think so.

  14. raynman says:

Maybe they should have trained McCain on how to be a better student and pilot rather then on avoiding PTSD…..

  15. JMOHR says:

Yes, my husband was a true believer and could not suffer from PTSD…the affliction was saved for those 18 year old draftees who were really traitorous, left wing radicals. It was their punishment from God for hating America.

  16. I. B. Leary says:

  20. Tired of being lied to says:

He was trained, he went to the Naval Academy, he was a trained United States naval officer, and so he knew what he was doing.

And dang proud to have graduated 894th in a class of 899!

Just how well did he learn that “training”?

  21. citizen_pain says:

Most PTSD cases are a result of combat. Ground fighting. Killing, and having your buddies killed before your eyes.

McCain dropped bombs from thousands of feet. Actually got shot down as a direct result of hot-dogging it (by his own admission). Then spent years in a POW camp as the trophy prisoner of the Viet Cong who’s dad was an Admiral. His injuries were due to his crash. he rolled and became a pawn for the enemy.

No wonder he has no PTSD, or any feelings of remorse, and shows a total lack of empathy. Most sociopaths are like this.

    raynman Says:

You take that back! Cindy’s not a Stepford Wife. Just ask her.

Cindy McCain, meanwhile, chafes at characterizations of her as a “Stepford wife.” “That couldn’t be further from the truth,” she said. ” I think my husband would say that too. I have very distinct opinions. Just because I choose to be a little less overt out on the campaign doesn’t mean I’m anything less than very opinionated and very intelligent.”

“They just hate me because I’m prettier and smarter than they are!”

  23. Hussein McCain says:

He doesn’t wake up in the middle of the night with the cold sweats, just a stinky dipey.

  24. wiley says:

The best protection from PTSD from combat is being a sociopath. If that isn’t the case, then maybe Songbird McCain wasn’t really roughed up that much. I’ve noticed that his problems with his limbs are being attributed to torture, when they were the result of his (third? fourth?) plane crash.

As a veteran, I give McMilitaryMan a grade of F.U.

  30. MapleStreet says:

She’s telling the truth. As PTSD occurs only among the poorly trained, we then have to ask why the military isn’t training our soldiers sufficiently to prevent this.

Or is this just a nudge away from PTSD doesn’t exist ?

    Right.

PS. I wasn’t drafted. I enlisted two weeks out of high school in the summer of 67. And I got my share of PSTD, including a twenty year alcohol addiction trying to erase the memories.

Wow, that brings up a whole new set of questions.

I mean, the US hasn’t had a draft since the Vietnam War ended, so that means all the PTSD diagnoses from the Gulf War, Afghanistan and Iraq were wrong.

Our entire military is composed of professionally trained soldiers; and if they’re trained, they would be no more susceptible to PTSD than cindy’s husband–right?

Why is mccain allowing such sub-par medical training and education to be used in the field for our troops?

So if there’s no PTSD, what’s all the anger and rage about? As for him being trained, trained for what? So, apparently, she wasn’t talking about pilot training. Cindy, the decision to stay in your abusive relationship is certainly yours to make, however, please don’t think that 300,000,000 Americans want to share that with you.

Listen to me! Cindy McCain has no right to criticize anything. Some 30 odd years ago she was committing adultery with John McCain in Hawaii while his wife Carole here at home was awaiting his return. Cindy know about her and still put a whole new meaning on “going to the john”. To me she needs to stay in a real john and shut up.
By the way. Did you know that she voted as conservator of her family’s huge Anheuser Busch stock holdings to all the company to be sold to a foreign owner in Belgium. Many “Bud” workers here at home are losing their jobs. So much for her views on our economy….
Another closing note. John McCain ditched more planes than any other Navy pilot that I know of.

    Been there, haven’t done that.

But Cindy was making the point that his “training” was so effective, he doesn’t suffer psychologically from the effects of his captivity – but his training admittedly failed him in the area of revealing detailed information – something many others had actually died for – so it’s reasonable to presume that this near-drop-out from the Naval Academy probably wasn’t taking this training any more seriously than “Wet-Start”’s other regimentation.

  77. Greytdog says:

Cindy McCain is the last person who would recognize PTSD even if McCain slapped her upside the head. I’m sure the APA will be glad to know that trained officers don’t suffer from PTSD – and since we all know that Cindy is never wrong, then all veterans who were officers and are claiming PTSD should be denied. Then the real soldiers with PTSD can finally be treated by the VA.
Cindy McCain is proof that natures abhors a vacuum.

And that’s pretty much what the Republicans said at the prospect of Kitty Dukakis (an alcoholic) being First Lady in 1988. It seems to be just fine when it’s one of their own, though…

Personally, I don’t think that alone should be a deal breaker. When Betty Ford was First Lady, she was both alcoholic and addicted to prescription drugs. And she still managed to be an inspiring First Lady (and an even more inspiring ex-First Lady). It’s dumb remarks like this that pretty much remove Cindy McCain from Betty Ford’s league.

Them workin’ poor. They had the trouble of war. So maladjusted.

My officer husband, who volunteered, used imprisonment to sharpen his leadership skills. When life gives you lemons…

See how special we are. Magical really. I can eat glass, you know.

  94. Rutabaga says:

Good God, Cindy, what color is the sky in your world?

  95. SKdeA says:

    She’s the Borg Queen.

  96. kasinca says:

Johnnies was not on the ground in Vietnam. He flew jets over North Vietnam and dropped bombs. This woman is a drug addict.

  97. christopher wiwi says:

Th veterans`s are going to flock over to Mcwars camp I can see it know,NOT!

  98. DallasNE says:

Oh, my. It is the 18-year olds fault that they did not get proper training but that macho guy McCain did. Cindy McCain just showed that she has been perched in that ivory tower for far too long.

  99. 49erDem says:

Okay, okay, we’ve finally found something John McCain was right about. She really IS a c*nt.

  100. reh says:

Why haven’t these ignorant comments gathered more media attention?

  101. kennybee says:

Unbelievable the comments made by “the elite”! I do not think Mrs. Mccain has had to stress about anthing except tax time, how to hide her INHERITED Millions from the federal government!! To make such an ignorant statement about vets and PTSD. I am a 20 year combat vet and I was hurt in a fall off the deck of a ship 25 feet drop in a combat zone and I still have nightmares, mood swings and agitated states. I feel insulted by this woman and Senator McCain should talk to his wife and correct her!!Thank God he was not elected president otherwise all vets with PTSD would be in a colony like lepers!!
