During a recent interview with Marie Claire, Sen. John McCain’s (R-AZ) wife Cindy suggested that her husband has never had PTSD symptoms because “he was trained.” She also added that symptoms such as “cold sweats in the middle of the night” are reserved for the “the 18-year-olds who were drafted”:
Q: You met your husband after his POW days. To what extent is that still with you – or is it a part of history?
McCAIN: My husband will be the first one to tell you that that’s in the past. Certainly it’s a part of who he is, but he doesn’t dwell on it. It’s not part of a daily experience that we experience or anything like that. But it has shaped him. It has made him the leader that he is.
Q: But no cold sweats in the middle of the night?
McCAIN: Oh, no, no, no, no, no. My husband, he’d be the first one to tell you that he was trained to do what he was doing. The guys who had the trouble were the 18-year-olds who were drafted. He was trained, he went to the Naval Academy, he was a trained United States naval officer, and so he knew what he was doing.
Wow! Hazing of underclassmen in the Naval Academy must be really rough!
October 9th, 2008 at 5:19 pmIn my experience, “the first one to tell you” is usually the one who’s telling a lie.
October 9th, 2008 at 5:19 pmCindy McCain: Vietnam vets with PTSD were 18-year-olds who didn’t know what they were doing.
– - Rick Davis’ campaign genius at work! Thanks, Rick!
Btw, Cindy, your hubby finished 884 out of 889 in his Naval Academy class, so those drafted 18-year olds weren’t far behind him.
October 9th, 2008 at 5:19 pmLook, all this silliness is just that.
It comes down to a simple choice between economic models.
Democrats believe an economy should be built from the bottom up because they know that when the people that live paycheck to paycheck get more, THEY SPEND IT. IMMEDIATELY.
Republicans believe an economy is built from the top down and that giving rich people more money will create jobs. The last 8 years are THE FINAL PROOF that this does not work.
October 9th, 2008 at 5:21 pm“The guys who had the trouble were the 18-year-olds who were drafted.”
Memo to Cindy: Lay off the pain killer. It’s fogging your brain.
October 9th, 2008 at 5:22 pmIt’s not part of a daily experience that we experience or anything like that.
It’s just that every so often he calls me the C word and a trollop.
And that ’s another thing… I think they put an extra o in the “country first” signs…
October 9th, 2008 at 5:22 pmWhere do these women come from?
I thought the Stepford Wifes was fiction.
October 9th, 2008 at 5:24 pmCindy: My husband will be the first one to tell you that that’s (POW experience) in the past.
– - Cindy’s stealing pills again.
October 9th, 2008 at 5:27 pmMcCAIN: Oh, no, no, no, no, no.
Classic case of denial.
My husband… He was trained, he went to the Naval Academy, he was a trained United States naval officer, and so he knew what he was doing.
Is that why he crashed so many planes? He knew what he was doing? NO PTSD, eh? Is that why he referred to American citizens as “my fellow prisoners”?
October 9th, 2008 at 5:27 pmHe was such a poor student maybe that accounts for it?

You must have missed the part where they said “Based on a true story.” ;)
October 9th, 2008 at 5:28 pmI can’t figure out what would be worse – a Manchurian candidate as president, or a stepford wife as first lady.
October 9th, 2008 at 5:29 pmFirst, let’s all remember that Cindy McCain is a prescription drug addict, so it is difficult to know if she’s telling the truth or not. Maybe she’s craving some oxycontin or something.
Many Vietnam veterans, regardless of how young they may have been when they served in Vietnam, have PTSD and mental health issues as a consequence of their service.
Do I believe that John McCain has never had any issues with PTSD? Hell no. Anyone who can survive as long in a North Vietnamese POW camp as McCain did simply cannot come out of that experience unscathed.
Cindy McCain is a LIAR. John McCain is a LIAR. Sarah Palin is a LIAR. George W. Bush is a LIAR. NONE of these people deserve to be taken at their word. Show us the medical records, McCain, that show you never had PTSD issues. Given how angry McCain is all the time, can he really expect us to swallow that claim? I don’t think so.
October 9th, 2008 at 5:30 pmMaybe they should have trained McCain on how to be a better student and pilot rather then on avoiding PTSD…..
October 9th, 2008 at 5:31 pmYes, my husband was a true believer and could not suffer from PTSD…the affliction was saved for those 18 year old draftees who were really traitorous, left wing radicals. It was their punishment from God for hating America.
October 9th, 2008 at 5:32 pmI still say when McCain was a POW, Chinese special ops goons did the Cha Cha Cha on his brain.
Quote: “My fellow prisoners”
Strait Talk? You betcha.
October 9th, 2008 at 5:32 pmWell, there goes the rest of the military vote, Johnny Boy. I am sure all those returning Iraq/Afghan vets and us Vietnam vets appreciate your condescending bullshit.
Keep it up and there won’t be anything left but your ‘base’, just like the 22%ers still supporting Dubya.
October 9th, 2008 at 5:33 pmBullshit.
October 9th, 2008 at 5:34 pmHe was trained, he went to the Naval Academy, he was a trained United States naval officer, and so he knew what he was doing…
….guess that means he knew what he was doing when he sang like a bird and made 30 propaganda films for the VC for better treatment…right….RIGHT???
October 9th, 2008 at 5:34 pmHe was trained, he went to the Naval Academy, he was a trained United States naval officer, and so he knew what he was doing.
And dang proud to have graduated 894th in a class of 899!
Just how well did he learn that “training”?
October 9th, 2008 at 5:35 pmMost PTSD cases are a result of combat. Ground fighting. Killing, and having your buddies killed before your eyes.
McCain dropped bombs from thousands of feet. Actually got shot down as a direct result of hot-dogging it (by his own admission). Then spent years in a POW camp as the trophy prisoner of the Viet Cong who’s dad was an Admiral. His injuries were due to his crash. he rolled and became a pawn for the enemy.
No wonder he has no PTSD, or any feelings of remorse, and shows a total lack of empathy. Most sociopaths are like this.
October 9th, 2008 at 5:36 pmraynman Says:
Where do these women come from?
I thought the Stepford Wifes was fiction.
You take that back! Cindy’s not a Stepford Wife. Just ask her.
“They just hate me because I’m prettier and smarter than they are!”
October 9th, 2008 at 5:36 pmHe doesn’t wake up in the middle of the night with the cold sweats, just a stinky dipey.
October 9th, 2008 at 5:39 pmThe best protection from PTSD from combat is being a sociopath. If that isn’t the case, then maybe Songbird McCain wasn’t really roughed up that much. I’ve noticed that his problems with his limbs are being attributed to torture, when they were the result of his (third? fourth?) plane crash.
As a veteran, I give McMilitaryMan a grade of F.U.
October 9th, 2008 at 5:39 pmHe has some serious PTSD. Watch him. I wonder what drugs he’s really on. Depacote and sometimes missing a dose? Could well be.
And she’s just a run-of-the-mill moron. Nothing special about her. Probably has a servant to wipe her ass because she can’t manage it on her own. way too complicated.
October 9th, 2008 at 5:40 pmChrist, she looks like Isma from the Emperor’s New Groove. It’s all Disney from hell, isn’t it?
October 9th, 2008 at 5:40 pmToo stupid to know he should be scared. Too arrogant to know he could be killed. Too far away from the actual fighting to see his buddies die. Too unimaginative to understand what others were going through. Too uncaring to give a damn. What a prick.
October 9th, 2008 at 5:42 pmAh, the old officer/enlisted man divide rears its ugly head. And where did Mrs. McCain get her medical degree?
October 9th, 2008 at 5:43 pmShe also added that symptoms such as “cold sweats in the middle of the night” are reserved for the “the 18-year-olds who were drafted”
Yeah, Johnny just dips into her stash of tranquilizers…or is on Ambien, driving around in his sleep….
(insert Twilight Zone theme…..)
October 9th, 2008 at 5:43 pmShe’s telling the truth. As PTSD occurs only among the poorly trained, we then have to ask why the military isn’t training our soldiers sufficiently to prevent this.
Or is this just a nudge away from PTSD doesn’t exist ?
October 9th, 2008 at 5:47 pmPull String on Cindy McCain and she says:
Oh, no, no, no, no, no. My husband, he’d be the first one to tell you that he was trained to do what he was doing. The guys who had the trouble were the 18-year-olds who were drafted. He was trained, he went to the Naval Academy, he was a trained United States naval officer, and so he knew what he was doing.
She says this because she was programed to say this by John. Says a lot about her husband and his loathing of anyone – even fellow soldiers – who are not him.
October 9th, 2008 at 5:53 pmI take no pleasure in losing the man who was John McCain to the creature Flippy McSpin. If he has not, indeed, lost his mind; I think he’ll regret some of what he’s done. But…
the garbage that comes out of his own mouth is disgusting enough. He really has to get control of his trollops before he becomes the most hated person in the Western Hemisphere.
Between Pfountainfluffer, McCindy, and the Bimbo Borealis? I’ve had to replace pop and beer with Pepto-Bismal. They’re worse than Cinderella’s stepsisters.
October 9th, 2008 at 5:53 pmHe was trained, he went to the Naval Academy, he was a trained United States naval officer, and so he knew what he was doing.
PTSD apparently was just for those who didn’t know what they were doing.
nice one, Cindy.
October 9th, 2008 at 5:54 pmWhat a complete piece of shit this woman is.
Tell me, Mrs McIIIrd, was your husband also trained, that when he saw he was locked on in a SAM radar signal, that he should continue to follow his bombing run and get shot down, or perhaps his training was to break up and right or left, release his counter SAM measure chaff and twist until he lost the incoming missile?
Right.
PS. I wasn’t drafted. I enlisted two weeks out of high school in the summer of 67. And I got my share of PSTD, including a twenty year alcohol addiction trying to erase the memories.

Just her husband.
October 9th, 2008 at 6:13 pm#12 – JimboSlice – what’s worse? The combination.
I’m gonna LOVE hearing the backlash from that one – draftees didn’t know what they were doing because they didn’t go to the academy, so they suffer from PTSD.
….And the “volunteers” currently in combat situations – what makes them prone to PTSD?
October 9th, 2008 at 6:13 pmMcCAIN: Oh, no, no, no, no, no. My husband, he’d be the first one to tell you that he was trained to do what he was doing.
Since when has the Naval Academy been teaching specialized lying ?

October 9th, 2008 at 6:18 pmgaaa, that hurt…
So the military needs to train people to be indifferent to severe human suffering and horror? Maybe a chip in the brain to disable that empathy thingy?

Mazal tov!!
October 9th, 2008 at 6:22 pmWow, that brings up a whole new set of questions.
I mean, the US hasn’t had a draft since the Vietnam War ended, so that means all the PTSD diagnoses from the Gulf War, Afghanistan and Iraq were wrong.
Our entire military is composed of professionally trained soldiers; and if they’re trained, they would be no more susceptible to PTSD than cindy’s husband–right?
Why is mccain allowing such sub-par medical training and education to be used in the field for our troops?
/snark
As her husband would say: what a c**t.
October 9th, 2008 at 6:23 pmSkinny Cindy & Scarah bloviate like bovines.
Air head twins, separated at birth.
Troops, are you listening? Think about this the next time you hear incoming…and the only reason you will get PTSD is that the Army didn’t train you…but the Navy does.
Bullshit!
October 9th, 2008 at 6:25 pmSo if there’s no PTSD, what’s all the anger and rage about? As for him being trained, trained for what? Cindy neglected to tell us how many fighter jets he actually destroyed before being shot down by the enemy (I believe it was two) – three, counting the shoot down. So, apparently, she wasn’t talking about pilot training. Cindy, the decision to stay in your abusive relationship is certainly yours to make, however, please don’t think that 300,000,000 Americans want to share that with you.
October 9th, 2008 at 6:26 pmMcCAIN: My husband will be the first one to tell you that that’s in the past. Certainly it’s a part of who he is, but he doesn’t dwell on it.
Certainly
Everyone I know “jokes” about randomly and wantonly bombing Iran without provocation …………….It’s what every normal person would do , isn’t it ?
What a fu(king retard this useless adulteress twit is…….
October 9th, 2008 at 6:34 pmi should think she’d be happy to go along with that diagnosis…

October 9th, 2008 at 7:01 pmI really suspect that McCain’s injuries while ejecting were caused by his inattention to detail while in ejection training, or maybe he just cut the classes because he could, being the son of an admiral.
October 9th, 2008 at 7:02 pmMost who ejected did not suffer any injuries like McLiar.
Zooey, katy, have you seen this picture?
Forget about the fact that the site is a McCain supporter’s. Just look at the great picture of Grampy and Palin.
October 9th, 2008 at 7:03 pmMr. POW didn’t “dwell on it” ?????????
YEAH!!
October 9th, 2008 at 7:10 pm“He was trained, he went to the Naval Academy, he was a trained United States naval officer, and so he knew what he was doing.
Yup! A stone-cold, clear-eyed baby-killer, that Bombin’ Johnnie. Nuthin bothered him. He’d drop bombs wherever he was told, and if he couldn’t get there, he’d drop ‘em anywhere. He was a farouking ace: killed more than 5 water-buffalo…
October 9th, 2008 at 7:10 pmBeing properly trained has nothing to do with having PTSD. You can’t train someone to not have mental disorders. Cindy is an idiot.
October 9th, 2008 at 7:18 pmListen to me! Cindy McCain has no right to criticize anything. Some 30 odd years ago she was committing adultery with John McCain in Hawaii while his wife Carole here at home was awaiting his return. Cindy know about her and still put a whole new meaning on “going to the john”. To me she needs to stay in a real john and shut up.
October 9th, 2008 at 7:20 pmBy the way. Did you know that she voted as conservator of her family’s huge Anheuser Busch stock holdings to all the company to be sold to a foreign owner in Belgium. Many “Bud” workers here at home are losing their jobs. So much for her views on our economy….
Another closing note. John McCain ditched more planes than any other Navy pilot that I know of.
I’m guessing the reason they have so many houses, is because when Johnny starts seeing “gooks” in the wallpaper, Cindy want the kids to be as far away as possible.
October 9th, 2008 at 7:22 pmWhy does that old coot surround himself with such idiotic women?? Geezus!! It scares me that people will actually vote for this jerk. Hero? Maverick? Yeah righ, from what I read, he sold out the US while behind enemy lines. More like a coward if you ask me. Well at least he wasn’t AWOL like the jerk in office now.

October 9th, 2008 at 7:29 pmI’m not sure when it was started but, all aircrew members go through “SERE” school to learn how to deal with being captured.
When I was a Nave aircrew member (74-79) I didn’t have to
go because the squadron (vxe6) was exempt because we deployed to Antartica to fly missions for the NSF. If i had transfered to another unit I would have had to go trough it and from
what I heard they even did some waterboarding!

Except he admitted telling the North Vietnamese details under torture. That seems to say his SERE training wasn’t so well ingrained.
October 9th, 2008 at 7:32 pmOr does SERE training include telling prospective prisoners it’s OK to reveal intel to stop torture?
October 9th, 2008 at 7:35 pmSpread the word about their adulterous past and her voting to sell Anheuser Busch to a foreign ownership.
October 9th, 2008 at 7:38 pmSarah Palin doesn’t think John McCain will live out the first term if elected and she would then be the first woman president. What a frightening thought. However, she could be right about McCain’s lifespan. If you will notice the side of his face where the cancer is supposed to have been cured is growing larger as the campaign goes on.

October 9th, 2008 at 7:44 pmI don’t condone JM’s actions while he was a POW just that
he would have had more training than the “regular” ground pounder and getting PTSD has nothing to do with having gone
through SERE school. People who have been subject to tornado’s
can suffer from PTSD.

October 9th, 2008 at 7:48 pmThat would be no.
I was a SeaBee in Nam doing two tours. One tour took a bullet in the foot and one in the shin. Second tour I lost an eye which ended a planned military career. However, it could have been worse if John McCain was a “ground pounder” anywhere near me. Thank God we had Marine perimeter protection. Just remember how many planes he crashed…..
October 9th, 2008 at 7:49 pmHey Cindy! If I promise to switch my vote will you comp me a few cases of beer?
(I can tell she wants to live in the White House real bad. Like she doesn’t have enough houses…)

October 9th, 2008 at 7:58 pmPeople who have been subject to tornado’s
can suffer from PTSD.
Been there, haven’t done that.
But Cindy was making the point that his “training” was so effective, he doesn’t suffer psychologically from the effects of his captivity – but his training admittedly failed him in the area of revealing detailed information – something many others had actually died for – so it’s reasonable to presume that this near-drop-out from the Naval Academy probably wasn’t taking this training any more seriously than “Wet-Start”’s other regimentation.
October 9th, 2008 at 8:02 pmCindy McCain is the last person who would recognize PTSD even if McCain slapped her upside the head. I’m sure the APA will be glad to know that trained officers don’t suffer from PTSD – and since we all know that Cindy is never wrong, then all veterans who were officers and are claiming PTSD should be denied. Then the real soldiers with PTSD can finally be treated by the VA.
October 9th, 2008 at 8:09 pmCindy McCain is proof that natures abhors a vacuum.
John McSame is insane. How he got that way is classified.
October 9th, 2008 at 8:15 pmCindy McCain should be talking about PMS instead of PTSD from the Viet Nam war. At her age both probably happened at the same time. Some call her a “Barbie”. If Barbie ever looked that bad they would never have sold any. Besides, the real Barbie never was a druggie. One Day At A Time lady. Not One Lie At A Time…
October 9th, 2008 at 8:29 pmAll that training Cindy and your husband still carries his burdens from that war to this day? I’d say you’re the one with PTSD (Post Trained Socialite Disorder). Go back to John’s side and keep your mouth shut, you horrible malcontent! Real people sacrifice for this nation, she doesn’t care nor respect them and all she cares about is how much she can distort relevant views to fit her own and the parties machinations when it comes to the military and military service.
There is a word for a person like that. Starts with c rhymes with runt. And I don’t mean it as a term of endearment.

And that’s pretty much what the Republicans said at the prospect of Kitty Dukakis (an alcoholic) being First Lady in 1988. It seems to be just fine when it’s one of their own, though…
Personally, I don’t think that alone should be a deal breaker. When Betty Ford was First Lady, she was both alcoholic and addicted to prescription drugs. And she still managed to be an inspiring First Lady (and an even more inspiring ex-First Lady). It’s dumb remarks like this that pretty much remove Cindy McCain from Betty Ford’s league.
October 9th, 2008 at 8:36 pmThom
Nah, it’s a C. Though, we can use that K…since a K in baseball is an abbreviation for a strikeout. And man, it took less than three pitches for Cindy to go down in flames with that zinger!

I would submit that the carnage of combat, watching your buddies get blown to hell, trying to patch up a sucking chest wound with your bandana, shit like that might get you some PTSD.

I do not think Mrs. Mccain has had to stress about anthing except tax time, how to hide her INHERITED Millions from the federal government!! To make such an ignorant statement about vets and PTSD. I am a 20 year combat vet and I was hurt in a fall off the deck of a ship 25 feet drop in a combat zone and I still have nightmares, mood swings and agitated states. I feel insulted by this woman and Senator McCain should talk to his wife and correct her!!Thank God he was not elected president otherwise all vets with PTSD would be in a colony like lepers!!
