Minister delivers divisive invocation at McCain event. (Updated with audio)»

The Iowa Independent reports that a minister who spoke at John McCain’s rally in Davenport, IA today injected a divisive statement into his invocation. Here’s what Pastor Arnold Conrad said:

I would also add, Lord, that your reputation is involved in all that happens between now and November, because there are millions of people around this world praying to their god — whether it’s Hindu, Buddha, Allah — that his opponent wins, for a variety of reasons. And Lord, I pray that you will guard your own reputation, because they’re going to think that their god is bigger than you, if that happens. So I pray that you will step forward and honor your own name with all that happens between now and election day.

UPDATE: Listen to Conrad’s remarks here:

Hindu is a god? Bad enough he’s confused about the Buddah, but “Hindu”? Who’s that?

  2. galmud Says:

First of all Buddha and “Hindu” (??) are not gods. Second Allah is just the Arabic word for God. Third pastor Conrad, you’re a God damn idiot

I never realized that the Christian God was so insecure, that it was worried about its size or reputation. My inbox is full of offers to increase one’s potency that I could forward to the Lord if that would help.

Why do these people hate our country? The Founders wanted a seperation of church and state, and yet these freaks want to create a theocracy.

  5. Gregor Samsa Says:

I didn’t realise the Christian god was a Republican, and that he cared so deeply about the outcome of the elections in the US.

With an entire universe to keep track of, you’d think the Christian god would have bigger things to worry about.

Petty gods are for petty people.

From “The War Prayer” by Mark Twain in 1904. Nothing’s changed, apparently.

…help us to turn them out roofless with their little children to wander unfriended the wastes of their desolated land in rags and hunger and thirst, sports of the sun flames of summer and the icy winds of winter, broken in spirit, worn with travail, imploring Thee for the refuge of the grave and denied it – for our sakes who adore Thee, Lord, blast their hopes, blight their lives, protract their bitter pilgrimage, make heavy their steps, water their way with tears, stain the white snow with the blood of their wounded feet! We ask it, in the spirit of love, of Him Who is the Source of Love, and Who is the ever-faithful refuge and friend of all that are sore beset and seek His aid with humble and contrite hearts. Amen.”

Oh, and help my football team make the playoffs…

    _____________

Because they’re frightened, ignorant people who’ve convinced themselves they’ll be kept safe by appealing to the mythological character of their choice. There’s always been a strain of this in American politics… the Know-Nothings are back.

    http://ap.grolier.com/article?assetid=0233110-00

    Know-Nothing Movement

Know-Nothing Movement, a nativist political movement in the United States in the 1850s. It was organized to oppose the great wave of immigrants who entered the United States after 1846. Know-Nothings claimed that the immigrants—who were principally Irish and Roman Catholic—threatened to destroy the American experiment. The Roman Catholic church, they charged, was subservient to a foreign prince (the pope), it was growing in power, and it potentially could exert political control over a large group of people. Such nativist sentiments had long existed among many Americans, but they had never before been expressed in such powerful form.

I’ve said this before and I will say it again: If the destiny of a nation (from the election of its leaders, to the decisions made by said leaders) is determined not by its people but by a god, what is the point of having elections at all?

What is the point of experience, when all a leader-to-be needs is to have the favor of the gods?

Better let the gods make all the important decisions, while we sit in front of our TV sets, watching American Idol -or some other mind-numbing show.

ChristoFascists are such a medieval, superstitious, self-centered lot.

I have some bad news for them:
Liberal. –In the King James version of the bible, “liberal” is a good word. The word “conservative” appears nowhere in the bible.
“The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself.” (Proverbs 11:25) “The vile person shall be no more called liberal, nor the churl said to be bountiful.” (Isaiah 32:5) “But the liberal deviseth liberal things; and by liberal things shall he stand.” (Isaiah 32:8) “Whiles by the experiment of this ministration they glorify God for your professed subjection unto the gospel of Christ, and for your liberal distribution unto them, and unto all men . . . Thanks be to God for his unspeakable gift.” (II Corinthians 9:13-15)

What kind of “god” has to worry about its reputation?
What kind of utter fuuking stupidity is going on here?
I give you Epicurus of Samos, circa 300, BCE:

Is “god” willing to prevent evil, but not able?
    Then he is not omnipotent.
Is he able, but not willing?
    Then he is malevolent.
Is he both able and willing?
    Then whence cometh evil?
Is he neither able nor willing?
    Then why call him “god?”

As far as I can tell, kind of… I know anyone who’s really, really studied theology will prolly roast me for that, but… as far as I’ve figured out, Christianity, Judaism, and Islam all use the same five books from the Old testament as a starting point. The Pentateuch?

Apparently one of the divisive issues is how each religion sees Jesus. to Christians, he’s the One, the Son of God. Muslims say yeah, he was a prophet, but just one of many, going back all the way to Abraham. And as far as jews are concerned, Jesus was just a pretentious nobody…

Why such silly distinctions are considered a valid reason for CENTURIES of bloody religious warfare is beyond me.

Hoooookay, having said all that, let the throwing of the stones begin!

  29. Gregor Samsa Says:

And methinks this pastor ought to be asking his god to allow people to stay in their homes -rather than lose them to foreclosure, and for those who have already lost their houses and jobs, to find a way to put food on their tables, and a roof over their heads, for themselves and their families.

But this “minister” is more concerned about what other people may think if his candidate doesn’t win the election. What an arrogant, fatuous moron.

Interesting story of how tax money was used by Palin as governor for religious activities, including charging the state for travel and per diem expense for a religious speech.

WASILLA, Alaska (AP) — The camera closes in on Sarah Palin speaking to young missionaries, vowing from the pulpit to do her part to implement God’s will from the governor’s office.

What she didn’t tell worshippers gathered at the Wasilla Assembly of God church in her hometown was that her appearance that day came courtesy of Alaskan taxpayers, who picked up the $639.50 tab for her airplane tickets and per diem fees.

This is a thinly-veiled attempt by a crazed right-wing pastor to say that Barack Obama is a Muslim, is different, is not one of us, not an American citizen, not Christian.

Notice how he left out Europe and the vast majority of Christians in Europe who are hoping and praying that Barack Obama is elected president.

So, this pastor is being lying and deceitful, and if you asked him if his “God” is lying and deceitful, he’d sputter and say “No, it’s the anti-God that is lying and deceitful,” which would actually help pinpoint which “God” he is really following, for it certainly isn’t the “God” that was taught about by Jesus Christ, who was hardly lying and deceitful.

  74. pete Says:

    lurcker:

I fear that all that was once honorable about John McCain has been lost in his transformation into Flippy McSpin. And he’s always made a habit of talking like a moderate while voting as a lockstep Reichwhiner.

I really have to wonder if the “Maverick” image would have survived if he had been nominated in 2000. Perhaps the movers and shakers of the GOP knew what a rotten candidate he would be? Lord knows he has a history of “cracking” under pressure.

I’m beginning to see his nomination as a complete sham. The GOP cons McSpin into selling his soul for an unsupportable nomination. They saddle him with the Bimbo Borealis as a running mate. And they structure the entire platform to appeal to the fringe fanatics.

They keep the sheeple in a frightened flock and rid themselves of the often embarrassing “Maverick” in one move. Then, they have the option of taking the position that McSpin wasn’t radical enough, or Bible Spice was too radical, when they run a “real” campaign in 2012. The hardcore 20%er morons won’t care.

  75. gooderservice Says:

[Note that he said “And Lord, I pray that you will guard your own reputation, because they’re going to think that their god is bigger than you, if that happens,” and not that “there is no other God than you…”]

When the hell has the Christian god even worried about his rep? I mean com’on. Between pillars of stone, global flooding, and eternal hellfire, why would any Christian think that god had to protect his rep?

Boy, these folks are losing it faster than a cow let loose in a stool softener factory.

Tell me about, Ralph… I’m beginning to feel a bit like that guy who goes sport fishing and ends up having his picture taken holding up a 5″ bass…

“Gee, is that the best ya can do, pardner?”

Here’s a theory, boys… ‘member back a couple o’ months ago, when the RNC “discovered” belatedly, very, very belatedly, that one of the Party officials had cleaned them out?

Perhaps, more specifically, he absconded w/ the RNC’s dedicated Trolling Funds… hence, the severe cost-cutting measures we’ve all commented on of late… less trolls, and of a decidedly lower quality.

Or perhaps… the poor li’l fellers are just too dispirited to come out and try anymore. I mean, would YOU voluntarily identify yourself as a GOOPer these days? If you didn’t have to?

  86. mmanion Says:

So we know McCain/Palin’s strategy for next week now. Palin’s backed off of her violence-inciting terrorist rhetoric and is out riling up the mob about abortion because heaven knows THAT topic doesn’t set off violent fanatics, and McCain is going to try to appeal to the last remaining vestige of rightwingy support he can muster–the enraptured rapturists and their illiterate shepherds. Me thinks it is time to take away some tax exempt statuses.

I thought these people were anxiously awaiting the Last Days. If they’re so sure Obama is going to bring them on and they see the fulfillment of (make believe) prophecy in his candidacy, shouldn’t they be voting for him?

  87. pete Says:

I wonder. Will the sick freaks start a 70 week “Rapture clock” when, if my little faith pans out, Obama is elected?

So does mean that if Obama wins the good Pastor will give up since his reputation is ruined and he is just a wuss?

  90. pete Says:

One can’t help but ask, “how many of the good pastors parishioners, whipped into a frenzy by his blather, have committed violent acts of domestic terrorism”?

For that matter. When are radical Christian Fundamentalists going to be held to the same “hate-speech” standard as other faiths? How many mindless thugs, programmed for violence by their preachers, wander our streets? How long will good, caring, rational, Christians tolerate the perversion of Christ as a Warrior God?

    ___________

    It’s called “projection”…

From our good friends at Wiki:

In psychology, psychological projection (or projection bias) is a defense mechanism in which one attributes one’s own unacceptable or unwanted thoughts or/and emotions to others. Projection reduces anxiety by allowing the expression of the unwanted subconscious impulses/desires without letting the conscious mind recognize them.

This is also why GOOPers fear and hate “teh gay” soooo acutely.

  94. leftcoast Says:

McCain is responsible for the rhetorical tone being set by his campaign and the threats being made at Obama at McCain rallies.
Repeated statements in news interviews, like, “We don’t want a negative campaign that’s why we don’t talk about the terrorists that maybe Obama hangs out, we don’t know what he’s up to.”
These statements on the Senate floor would cause censure.
Therefore the senate needs to begin Censure Hearings. I heard calls to Feinstein’s office calling for hearings have been enormous.

The vitriol in the comments on that odious “What Will You Do…” site leads me to clean my pistolas…

I somehow ended up on a Fox News blog site where they were discussing how we were going to steal the election thanks to ACORN. Apparently they believe that ACORN can register the same guy 72 times and get away with it and then that guy is going to vote 72 times. Anyway, I read some of the comments there. I felt immediately like I needed to take a shower to wash off the stench.

Do they even read the bible?

Unfortunately even the King James Bible was not immune to liberal bias…It must suck being a conservative, seeing that even the book they adore is against them…/snark

God don’t show up in court. God has no place in the government. Everywhere else, believe and do what thou wilt, so long as it doesn’t interfere with the liberties of others. Secular government—is that really such a tall order?

I think we need to give the credit to TP. I have no idea how they did it, and they’ve been mighty quiet about it, but they appear to have virtually ended troll infestations here.

I don’t think that’s it. I have noticed a lack of trolls at other sites like the Huffington Post. I think that the trolls are just really tired and discouraged. The fun has gone out of it. And, then, they aren’t getting paid any longer so why should they waste their time?

I’m wondering when Obama will announce his take for September. It must be awesome if he is buying up 30 minute blocks of time on many stations.

I don’t think I will ever understand how they can be assured in their Faith if they are so paranoid. A logical person, looking at how they operate, would be forced to think that they are convinced Jebus will kill them (by mistake?) if they don’t hate unbelievers enough.

And, it would seem, that “unbelievers” are anyone who doesn’t buy the crap a particular insane preacher is pushing. Though I’m sure there are more than a few who sit in genuine churches holding hate in their hearts without the benefit of an overtly xenophobic dogma.

  105. MrSquirrel Says:

I found an email address for Rev. Conrad at InterimPastors.com and sent him the following message, using language he might understand:

Great idea. I sent him one too:

    Dear Pastor Conrad,

I must say that as a Christian, I found your invocation in Davenport today offensive.

What did you mean, when you said, “There are plenty of people around the world who are praying to their god, be they Hindu, Buddah, or Allah, that his opponent wins. I pray that you step forward and honor your own name.”?

It seems to imply that you think God is, or should be, on the side of Mr. McCain, while only people of other religions think otherwise. Your words make it sound as if the non-Christian world is praying to their god for Mr. Obama to win, against God’s wishes.

Your words not only insult millions of devout and faithful Christians, including Mr. Obama and myself, but they insult Christianity as a whole. They make God seem like some petty arbiter of your personal wishes. Your appeals to God’s “reputation” (?) , and the honor of His name, clearly imply that you believe that these are questions upon which He would need your advice.

The concept that God would need your urging to protect His own honor and reputation by bestowing victory upon your chosen political candidate borders on sacrilege. Perhaps I have misinterpreted your words, but those are the strong impressions they convey, even upon serious reflection. I without doubt would be ashamed to be associated with any sect of Christianity that would impel me to endorse such words.

    Sincerely,
    A fellow Christian

  106. wolfsinger Says:

This Conrad fella prays to his God with a threat saying basically,

“Your reputation is on the line here Buddy Jesus and I don’t know if I can believe in you if those OTHER Gods let Obama win so you BETTER get on the ball or else! ‘Cause if I find out HIS GOD is BIGGER than you, well, I’m just gonna to take my hypocritical ass of a self home and get me a hooker or 6 just like Falwell, Baker and Haggart! You hear me Jesus!?!? Don’t make me, Jesus! Don’t make me!”

  109. blogoffanddie Says:

Christian soldiers believe if you pray hard enough, god will kill your enemies for you - even if they’re Christians (of one of the lesser denominations).
God also accepts prayers for lottery numbers, football scores and other sporting events.

The Democratic Party is a lot like a box of chocolates; you’re never sure where the nuts are - whereas the Republican Party is a lot like a chocolate fudge sundae, they tend to put the biggest nuts on top.

    What galmud said (#3).

Any clergyperson who thinks that Muslims and Christians pray to different Gods needs to return to seminary for a lil refresher.

  111. bitblt Says:

Jefferson’s words inscribe on his memorial:

“And can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are the gift of God? That they are not to be violated but with his wrath? Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just: that his justice cannot sleep for ever. …”

Do TPers agree with Jefferson and agree these liberties are a gift of God?

If these liberties aren’t a gift from God, from where do they originate and what are we, U.S. Citizens, doing to insure these liberties are passed to our posterity?
