Palin Responds To Troopergate Report, Dodges Issue Of Whether She Abused Power

While Sarah Palin was boarding her campaign bus this morning, a reporter seeking comment on the new Troopergate report shouted out to her, “Governor, did you abuse your power?” She responded:

If you read the report, you’ll see that there’s nothing unlawful or unethical about replacing a cabinet member. You’ve got to read the report, sir.

Watch it:

As Jake Tapper notes, Palin is dodging the question and parsing her answer. “It’s true that there’s nothing ‘unlawful or unethical about replacing a cabinet member’ in principle,” he writes, “but the report is not as Gov. Palin is presenting it.” The report explicitly states that she did abuse her power and acted unethically:

For the reasons explained in section IV of this report, I find that Governor Sarah Palin abused her power by violating Alaska Statute 2952.110(a) of the Alaska Executive Branch Ethics Act.

Moreover, the report states that compliance with this Act “is not optional,” and that her conduct violated the Ethics Act.

You’ve got to read the report, Governor Palin.

UpdateSteve Benen comments, "If the first question is 'Governor, did you abuse your power?' maybe the second should be, 'Governor, when do you plan on reading the report about your ethics scandal?'"

I'm sure McFalin read the report just like she reads every and any newspaper in the country.

Uh, I know you're not very honest, or bright, but violating a statue or law is unlawful, Sarah.

  6. pax Says:

It is ok if she violated ethics laws.....afterall, she is a republican!

  7. Dr. Hussein Matt Says:

McCain and the GOPigs just released the following ad:

"Barack Obama fired the Alaskan Chief of Police because he wouldn't bow to portraits of Osama bin Laden and then he blamed Sarah Palin and then had baby kitten stew for supper. Can you trust Barack Obama?"

  8. upside99 Says:

WOW!!! Flailin could end up being a heartbeat away from being POTUS.

I am sure relieved she has the morals and integrity for the job.

    SHUDDER!

  9. galmud Says:

    "Governor Palin is speaking out"??

Shes running for her bus to avoid questions. The reporters kept away at such a distance they have to shout to even get her attention

The only thing Palin wants to speak out about is Obama "palling around with terrorists"

  10. unbelievable Says:

The verdict on this, by the way, was a bypartisan 12-0.

So much for the evil Democratic conspiracy theory...

  11. upside99 Says:

  14. ArtZ Says:

To a republican, violating an ethics statute is merely a consequence of doing business. It's not like "breaking a law" or anything!

    Wait...?

  15. Badmoodman Says:

You’ve got to read the report, Governor Palin.

    - - Look, it's a non-story. No legal action can be taken against her and the report said Palin was within her rights to reassign Monegan.

No doubt though that she's PathologicAlLyIN'

  16. normalasf Says:

This just reaffirms McCain's superior decision making skills. Who but a mavericky Maverick would tap an ethically-challenged genius to be his replacement?

I could just kick myself for having already voted for that pal of terrorists, Barack Hussein Obama.

  17. superid Says:

I like how she tries to hind behind the folders she's carrying. Guilty about something? Why is FOX having to ambush her anyway? And where were Sean and Greta last night? Inquiring minds want to know.

And Sarah is still demanding the truth from Obama speaking to her crowds.
In fact this morning she was saying:" It is not negative, it is not mean spirited when you talk about his record(Obama's record)".
A record that does not exist. A record she is selling to the crowd that Obama is linked to terrorism.
How can anybody vote for someone who was found abusing his power as a governor.
We had enough of Nixon and other abusers of power.
In her debate with Biden she showed lust for more power when she was hinting that VP duties can be and should be expanded.

  28. mocha Says:

What I think is funny is that McCain has spent the past two weeks trying desperately trying to tie Obamba to people with apparent "ethics issues." Now, Palin is that exact type of person.

I hope Obama blasts McCain for dealing with Palin.

Nah, her new look is probably due to the Newsweek photos Foxy News was whining about. Ya know, so she can help the posture of those couch potato idiots who like to watch her.

  33. Bilbo Hussein Baggins Says:

I don't believe that her right to fire someone was ever in question. She has the right to fire someone if she doesn't like the color of his tie. The issues were did she abuse her power in the process of firing and also that she lied about her reasons for the firing.

  34. Bilbo Hussein Baggins Says:

You gotta love Fox. The reporter says "meanwhile the report does not recommend any sanctions or criminal charges".

The report doesn't mention either of those. So I guess by their reasoning since it was not part of the report, they are "not recommending" something. All they were charged with was the investigation. They were not charged with determining whether or not she should be punished. That will be up to the full Alaskan legislature.

  35. barfly Says:

I'll forgo the snark, for an observation that the McCain campaign made some pretty strong, as-yet-unsubstantiated charges, regarding Trooper Wooten's emotional state.

Since he's still to be considered a private citizen, it appears the campaign has put themselves in a very tenuous position. If he sues, they're pretty much on the hook for this defamatory statement.

Send any hate-filled chain mail slurs to this url and the “perpetrators of these crimes” will be immediately investigated by the Feds.

Oh come on. You don't really believe that Homeland Security is going to investigate anything that has to do with Obama, do you?

  37. Shayne Says:

It's going to be difficult for Tina Fey to play Palin ducking camera and covering her face in shame. Good thing Sarah did all that race baiting and inciting to violence earlier in the week.

  38. Great Frybread King Says:

One question I would like to ask her is what she is going to do when she returns to Alaska after McCain loses the election. Will she apologize to the Alaskan people for disgracing the governorship, or will she remain defiant despite violating ethics laws?

  39. SP Biloxi Says:

Betty Boop "wink, wink" Palin wouldn't know the word " Alaska Executive Branch Ethics Act" if it bit her in the butt. But then again, she made a total fool of herself to Charlie Gibson when she didn't know what the Bush Doctrine was.

Palin got caught and she simply can't get out of this. And what made matters worse for Palin was that 12-0 and dominated GOP panel found that she abused her power in office. That is a hard pill to swallow for Sarracuda.

Absolutely amazing how her audience falls for her empty speeches.

Has there ever been another politician that could dish out this kind of crap in this manner to this many people?

You have to admit - she is good at this.

This only enhances her appeal to republicans.

  44. wizard2000 Says:

If Sarah Palin is unwilling to admit that she abused her power as Alaska's governor by letting her husband use her office to launch a vendetta against her sister's ex-husband, then she will no doubt do the same if elected vice-president (a heartbeat away from the presidency).

Based on what the Palins have been doing up in Alaska, voting for the McCain/Palin ticket will amount to putting Todd Palin a heartbeat away from the presidency, too...Forget It.

  45. LibertyLover Says:

'Governor, when do you plan on reading the report about your ethics scandal?'"

Probably when it makes its way onto a cup of Starbucks coffee...

  46. wizard2000 Says:

The Troopergate report was just released yesterday.

Based on the finding that Gov. Sarah Palin had violated Alaska's Ethics Act by letting her husband, Todd Palin, use her office to launch a personal, family-feud vendetta against her sister's ex-husband, is anyone ready for Todd Palin (if his wife is elected vice-president) to be a heartbeat away from the presidency?

This is my take on what a McCain/Palin presidency would mean.

That Todd Palin, who has numerous connections to far, right-wing militia groups, would have a very high platform from which to push the interests of all these groups (Timothy McVeigh would be soooo evnious) if his wife ends up being vice-president (a heartbeat away from the presidency)...just as Sarah Palin herself would have a very high platform, too, from which to push her hardcore, anti-U.S. Constitution religious bigotries and biases, with her witch doctor pastor friend no doubt being called upon by her to exorcise all the "witches" from our nation and drive out the "liberal devil"...which would be the death-knell for our freedom-loving, liberal democracy.

(Remember, Jesus Christ was a LIBERAL, whom the Republi...er, conservatives of his day hated, saying that he was a blasphemer and a heretic, and that Jesus was "doing the work of the devil." Sound familiar?).

    Obama/Biden '08.

  47. Chocolate Jesus Says:

Someone needs to do a Freedom of INformation request on other 1000 pages of the report which wernt publicly released. They claim they contain "confidential personal information" but I'm not buying it. I say this is as much of a whitewash as such aggregious behaviour would allow. Apparently there was evidence that Palin bribed an oganization to try and help prevent the trooper from getting disability benefits, but somehow this never made it into the report, at least not the public one.

Does anyone know if a a Freedom of INformation request has been made? anyone can make one...someone should..

  48. Chocolate Jesus Says:

I dont watch Tv much, the only news I can stand to watch is the daily show, does anyone who watches much TV know how much airplay this Troopergate report is getting?

  49. SICKOF IT ALL Says:

Maybe a touch off topic but Sad how we can let one race in a nation of many, claim racism against themselves in every situation they don't agree with, especially now with a half black senator running for president, its funny how only whites are racist these days, its also funny how I dont know of any white neigborhoods that one would be scared to walk through for fear of a ganged beating or being robbed, also were is the WET channel, ohhh thats right we would be racist if we had one of those, if barack hussein muhammed obama the black muslim doesnt get elected as president for whatever reason there will be a race war in america.....ultimatly being because the ballots were rigged because of "ethical and racist reasons, makes me SICK!!!
