McCain Campaign Says Black Is White: Claims Troopergate Investigation Found No Wrongdoing

On Friday, the bipartisan Alaskan Legislative Council voted unanimously to release the findings of its “Troopergate” investigation. The report stated unequivocally that “Sarah Palin abused her power” by violating a statute of the Alaska Executive Branch Ethics Act. As the report emphasized, “Compliance with the code of ethics is not optional.”

The McCain campaign has decided to simply turn the finding on its head. On Fox News Sunday this morning, campaign manager Rick Davis claimed the investigation absolved Palin of any wrongdoing:

DAVIS: Let me tell you, this whole thing has been a kangaroo court form day one. … The reality is there was absolutely no wrongdoing found in the report. 1,000 pages, an enormous waste of time and the best that they could come up with was no violation of any laws or ethics rules, but –

WALLACE: Wait wait. It said she violated the state ethics board.

DAVIS: But that she acted within her power and scope of authority as governor to do exactly as she did. … It was a great public circus.

Watch it:

Davis’s claim that the investigation was a partisan hit job is laughable. The investigation was originally authorized by a unanimous, bipartisan vote of the Legislative Council; a bipartisan majority voted to subpoena key witnesses, including Todd Palin; and its findings were released Friday under unanimous, bipartisan agreement.

Yesterday, Palin similarly reversed the report’s findings, telling Alaskan reporters yesterday she was “very very pleased to be cleared of any legal wrongdoing,” or “any hint of any kind of unethical activity there”:

ADN: Governor, finding No.1 on the report was that you abused your power by violating state law. Do you think you did anything wrong at all in this Troopergate case?

PALIN: Not at all and I’ll tell you, it, I think that you’re always going to ruffle feathers as you do what you believe is in the best interest of the people whom you are serving.

Perhaps Palin’s complete misunderstanding of the report’s findings is rooted in the fact that she apparently still hasn’t actually read it:

ADN: Have you read the whole report? (No response; Stapleton invites question from KTVA reporter).

The reality is there was absolutely no wrongdoing found in the report. 1,000 pages, an enormous waste of time and the best that they could come up with was no violation of any laws or ethics rules...

Clearly Rick Davis didn't read the 263-page report, either.

On the other hand, Republicans do not feel that abusing power is "doing anything wrong". Davis is either lying or delusional.

  3. vinylspear Says:

Not my quote but it bears repeating: "This is what 1984 looks and sounds like when it's used as an instruction manual."

  4. tarazan Says:

Davis and Sarah are simply questioning our English language abilities, questioning the integrity of the report by claiming it was partisan biased report.
Yet they claim there is nothing in the report, according to Sarah Palin.
How can the report be biased on one hand...and there is nothing in it on the other hand ?

  5. Iolair Says:

What you need to understand is, for Republicans, ethics violations by Republicans are not wrong. Indeed, they're expected, perhaps even a pre-requisite to holding public office.

  6. spencers mom Says:

It's one thing to try to revise history when it's more than, oh let's pick a timeframe, a few days old, but Prick Davis has emerged from his Freddie Timeout to go on FuxNews and rewrite a report issues Friday night!

This may play well with "The Base", which is now better described as the lowest of the low rather than the foundation of the Republican party.

I wrote this to a family friend who is considering Obama which would be a first in a lifetime's Dem vote:

"Palin stood smiling in front of huge, energized crowds and told them that it was not only okay, but patriotic, to release their inner bigot and racist.

And McCain either directed these activities or was aware of them and did nothing for days. He condoned these statements when he thought they would benefit him personally, and only after seeing the polls drop further and the pundits scold his campaign did he attempt to change course and try to take the high road.

This country needs to come together on November 5th. We've had eight years of a disgracefully divisive administration, and McCain/Palin seem to want it to continue if they don't emerge the victors.

    Shame on both of them!"

    PEACE

  7. tom Says:

The Unstable/Unable ticket is historic. We have here the first duo who have both been found in violation of ethics standards before election day -- Unstable for Keating 5; Palin for Troopergate.

I think the real strategy behind Davis' brutish, abhorrent performance this morning on FoxSnooze was to set up the "excuse" for Obama's landslide election next month.

It won't be because McNumbNuts made a cynical, desperate, political, un-vetted selection of an airhead as a running mate.

It won't be because McNumbNuts has no substance, no vision, no control over his temper or no leadership skills.

It will be all Steve Davis' fault. He was officially thrown under the bus this morning.

According to an article in the ADN, apparently Commissioner Monegan was fired for his "rogue mentality", and "outright subordination" and working to get funding for a project the Gov had vetoed. In other words... he was fired for being a MAVERICK! lol

I always laugh when McCain or Pailin says they'll work as a "team of mavericks". Do they not see the irony in that? The whole point of being "mavericky" is that you refuse to work with anybody as a team. It would be bad enough to elect one of them, but two would be a disaster. Thankfully, the polls are looking better, so maybe things can turn around over the next 8 years!

  10. the Lone Voice of Reason Says:

So all the news reports about her violating ethics are wrong? What a load of bs! Desperate and sad.

  11. Scalcar Says:

The day they announced her, I heard from Ed Schultz that this scandal was underway, and I predicted when she gets convicted it will almost literally kill the GOP ticket.

Now, The Columbus Dispatch only prints the story in the tiny bottom corner, and the McCain camp is telling conservatives she did nothing wrong.

    UN-believable.

  12. scytherius Says:

And just WHO do they think is stupid enough to believe their spin. Oh I know we talk about "the stupid people" out there. And there are a lot of them. But the people they need to sway aren't that group. And this type of approach pisses them off. The "stupid people" are running the McCain/Palin campaign.

  14. VerbalKint Says:

I don't think these lies will help the shameless liars one bit. Even the MSM has digested and accepted the fact that the report clearly and concisely states that Palin violated the ethics statute. The only people swallowing these lies anymore are the koolaid-drunk freaks who are going to vote McCain/Palin no matter what. It is clear that their latest barrage of extreme lying and race-baiting is backfiring on them big time.

  15. impeachcheneythenbush Says:

Rick Davis is very reptilian-looking. I keep expecting him to flick out a long, split tongue. Certainly, he lies enough to have one (as Native Americans would define lying).

LOL! The short answer is no, but I suspect irony and subtlety are lost on this pair "casual thinkers".

I also laugh when McCain claims he's been branded the Maverick of the Senate, when, of course, a maverick was anything that remained unbranded.

    Finding Number One:

For the reasons explained in section IV of this report, I find that Governor Sarah Palin abused her power by violating Alaska Statute 39.52.110(a) of the Alaska Executive Branch Ethics Act. Alaska Statute 39.52.110(a) provides

“The legislature reaffirms that each public officer holds office as a public trust, and any effort to benefit a personal or financial interest through official action is a violation of that trust.”

PALIN: Not at all and I’ll tell you, it, I think that you’re always going to ruffle feathers as you do what you believe is in the best interest of the people whom you are serving.

    Sarah you lie.

Palin is falling back on the same distinction which Bush, Cheney, Ashcroft Rumsfield, Craig, etc. all use when they are accused of wrongdoing. It wasn't against the law.

My friends, I believe that the American people deserve leadership in office who acts professionally and ethically, going beyond what is merely legal to restore honor and integrity to the offices they hold.

In the Bush White House professional standard which staffers are held to is that if they are caught, convicted, and jailed for their crimes then they will be removed from office. We have vivid examples that anything less than actual incarceration will be defended by the White House.

  20. unbelievable Says:

    Exactly.

Look what Bush has been allowed to get away with. Of course they will follow in his footsteps as long as they can get away with it. These are very unethical people, and they've taken over the Republican Party. Notice how many former Republicans are now Independents now?

How's it going to look when her own supposedly unbiased report on her actions also nails her to the wall for violating Alaska statute? Poetic.

I think the scariest point of all of these reich-wingers is that they truly believe in what they atr saying. They have no beliefs in ethics — that all is fair in politics — therefore they are telling the truth. My “former” pastor used to tell me that if someone (in this case my son) does not think he is lying, then he isn’t. He went on to tell me I was a n al for keeping track of those occassions “when he wasn’t lying!” These people have no souls! They find nothing wrong with anything they do if their goals are achieved. That's exactly what will happen on November 4. It is now looking like the Democrats will have 59 Senate seats. That pretty much will stop filibusters. If it doesn't, then the Democrats need to make them stand there and read the phone book for days if they want to filibuster.

Oh, does that 59 count Lieberman? I don't think he is a registered Democrat any longer, so it might not.

CORRECTION. Here's how this post should read:

"On Friday the bipartisan Alaskan Legislative Council, made up of 13 Republicans and 2 Democrats, voted unanimously 12-0 (with three Republican no-shows) to release its ‘Troopergate’ findings."

    And:

"Davis’s claim that the investigation was a partisan hit job is laughable, given that Republicans outnumber Democrats on the Council by approximately 6 to 1."

It is not enough to describe Alaska’s Joint Legislative Council as simply bi-partisan to describe the McCainiacs claims of a partisan witch-hunt as simply “laughable”. The point and counter point explains nothing—it’s just the same old “he said--she said” game of abstract equivalency.
Michael Isikoff in Newsweek writes: “McCain campaign spokeswoman Meg Stapleton dismissed the report as the product of "a partisan-led inquiry run by Obama supporters." But there could be more land mines ahead.”
Isikoff doesn’t even attempt to offer even a cursory dismissal Stapeleton;s partisan charge, he just blows right past it.
KTVA writes: “ On Monday afternoon, the Joint Legislative Council, filled with Republicans and Democrats, voted 12 to 0 to formally call for an investigation against Governor Palin in a manner—that they are stressing—will be unbiased and done in a timely fashion.”
At least KTVA substantiates that the JLC is bipartisan, but even this misses the major point that the ‘partisan’ claim is an absolute LIE.
Fact: The Joint Legislative Council has 15 members of which 13 are Republicans and only two are Democrats Bettye Davis and Ethan Berkowitz.
Fact: The Council needed 8 votes to release the report.
Fact: The vote was 12-0 to release the report.
Fact: 10 Republicans voted to release the report
Fact: 3 Republicans didn’t show up to vote; Rep. Ralph Samuels, Rep. John Harris and Sen. Gary Wilken.
Fact: McCain has operatives running Palin’s office whilst she is out inciting racial violence. They must be well aware of the political make-up of the JLC.

As long as everyone reports that the JLC is simply “bipartisan” then the Mc Cain camp can keep saying the opposite and get-away by virtue of unchallenged repetition of the LIE .

McCain/Palin have been demonstrating that they embrace risky 'end justifies the means' method of problem solving by the way they embrace Rovian politics steeped in lies, innuendo and now with racist born hate. Blaming the financial crisis on minorities, especially the 'black kind', and arousing suspicion of those who are different and encouraging fear of anyone who thinks about politics or religion in a way that may be strange to them is a typical way for fascism to grow like a cancer.

Hate is evil; it always has been. The loyal followers of all things Neocon are deceiving themselves that they are doing God’s will while calling evil good. Bravado driven nationalism that disguises hate in an illusion of the defense of mom and apple pie does not improve its immorality.

They frighten me and I worry how they will attempt to use their frenzied mobs to push us further into fascism (their crowds sure look and sound like those who have rabidly embraced it's propaganda). The, McPalin's angry hooligans, behave very much as a fascist driven torrent looking to wash away everything that doesn't fit into their tiny ideological mindset. I have serious worries, if they are unsuccessful at stealing the election, how they will behave in the months and years to follow. I have many more worries if they do steal it!!!

But no, in John McCain’s mission here, in taking the high road, as you’re going to see too with a lot of unfair shots he has taken in this campaign with some of his opponents’ supporters, McCain and I taking the high road, being positive. They may not have to.

In a barely noticed development last week, the Army stationed an active unit inside the United States. The Infantry Division's 1st Brigade Team is back from Iraq, now training for domestic operations under the control of U.S. Army North, the Army service component of Northern Command. The unit will serve as an on-call federal response for large-scale emergencies and disasters. It's being called the Consequence Management Response Force, CCMRF, or "sea-smurf" for short.

An initial news report in the Army Times newspaper last month noted, in addition to emergency response, the force "may be called upon to help with civil unrest and crowd control."

    Here's the link.
October (or November) surprise? I wouldn't put it past Bush/Cheney to pull some kind of BS to declare a state of emergency and suspend the election. Who knows---paranoid, maybe. But perhaps something to be aware before these fascists' time is up.
