McCain Makes The Case Against Himself: Next President ‘Won’t Have The Luxury Of Studying Up On The Issues’

During a campaign rally this afternoon, John McCain made this observation:

The next President won’t have time to get used to the office. He won’t have the luxury of studying up on the issues before he acts.

“We cannot spend the next four years as we have spent much of the last eight, waiting for our luck to change,” McCain added. “The hour is late. Our troubles are getting worse. Our enemies watch.” Watch it:

McCain’s statement could not be a more damaging indictment of himself. As he has acknowledged repeatedly, he doesn’t know much about the economy and “still needs to be educated” on it:

– “I’m going to be honest: I know a lot less about economics than I do about military and foreign policy issues. I still need to be educated.” [Wall Street Journal, 11/26/05]

– “The issue of economics is not something I’ve understood as well as I should…I’ve got Greenspan’s book.” [Boston Globe, 12/18/07]

– “In the interest of full disclosure, I didn’t pay nearly the attention to those issues in the past…I was probably a ’supply-sider’ based on the fact that I really didn’t jump into the issue.” [The New Republic, 1/31/00

Just last month, McCain proposed a plan to outsource dealing with the economy. The Washington Post reported, “Sen. John McCain on Tuesday proposed a commission to study the economic crisis along the lines of the one that investigated the Sept. 11 attacks.”

More recently, the McCain campaign has tried to “turn the page” on the economy and has stated, “If we keep talking about the economic crisis, we’re going to lose.”

This new found Economic Crisis act is already stale. John McCain doesn’t think there is much of a problem with the economy. LOOK at his economic proposals, just look at them. If he believed there were serious issues, would he be putting forth a corporate agenda?

I truly believe the only person who can be “ready to be President on Day One” is somebody who either already is or already has been POTUS. EVERY new President we have ever had has experienced some kind of learning curve — although it’s been shorter for some than for others.

When McCain talks about how “ready” he is, he only looks like a fool (where I come from, we call that “ignorance on fire”). Augmented by his choice of a running mate, who needs more studying on the issues than most average people I know.

  20. Alejandro says:

Actually, this may add up to less than 10 percent in total because some number of people are in both the “upper economic” and “lower intellectual” groups.

  22. margerine says:

I would like to believe that a president would make informed choices even in a crunch. We all have to in our day to day jobs or we’d be fired. Apparently the risk for the President is, well, nothing if Bush is any indication.

This doesn’t mean spending 3 months on something, but having a “plan” within a few hours that’s impossible and makes you look stupid is hardly a good thing to do either. Sometimes a few days can make a big difference…

But I think more than anything, a lot of the American people want a president who is forthright with them and instills confidence. Things might not always be perfect, but this is what is happening and we’re fixing it now. Instead, we have a meek President who runs up to podiums for 5 minute press conferences, blaming everyone but himself and then quickly scurries back into his White House.

I don’t want that again. I’m done with people who think acting smartly with what is provided is some sort of liability.

  23. fletc3her says:

At this moment in time we might want to go with the guy with a doctorate from Harvard who taught Constitutional Law. At this time of economic challenges, why not put the smartest guy in the race in charge of the country?

we have a meek President who runs up to podiums for 5 minute press conferences, blaming everyone but himself and then quickly scurries back into his White House.

  25. tom says:

“Next President ‘Won’t Have The Luxury Of Studying Up On The Issues’”

This is even more ironic in view of the fact that Obama has a full-fledged transition group making preparations and plans for his potential presidency.

Meantime, McCain says that’s premature and he has “all hands on deck” working on his campaign.

Which one of these candidates would you have more confidence in being ready to assume the presidency?

  26. Keltoi says:

Hey All, I’ve been away a long while.

A couple weeks ago I was saying the only person who could win this for McCain was Bin Laden ala 2004, but with the DOW losing half its value…a McCain win is virtually inconceivable. Even the “Bradley Effect” won’t cover this margin. I expect Obama will break 300 electoral votes.

Oh, it is too hilarious. McCain is up 30 points in Idaho – I have seen one sign for him, and only bumper stickers for Obama. Neither one of them covets our mighty four electoral votes enough to fight over them, apparently.

But y’know the strangest thing? All of the campaign signs are Blue, no matter what the party. And none of the Campaign signs for Republicans say “Republican”. You know the Dems are at flood tide when the R’s are hiding their party affiliation in the Ruby Red Potato state!

  35. gummitch says:

    Zooey Says:

Portland is, of course, hardly typical of the rest of the country but yesterday I did see my first McCain/Palin lawn sign. Appropriately, it was on the front lawn of a Georgian mansion up on Mt Tabor. I live on the very (affordable) edge of one of the city’s more exclusive neighborhoods — huge beautiful homes built early in the 20th century. Every other yard, at least, has an Obama lawn sign and there are stickers on all the cars and signs in windows.

I’ve noticed this in tv commercials for the Oregon legislature and other offices. No affiliation is mentioned at all.

And, of course, the Democratic Senate committee is spending resources in the state to prop up Jeff Merkley’s campaign against Gordon Smith. It’s way too early to call, and way too close, but Merkley is polling higher than Smith for the first time and Obama’s coattails could be huge in this state.

Funny you should mention signs. Here in North Carolina, there have been a lot of Obama signs for a long time — since before our primary election last May. Obama and Hillary both spent a fair amount of time and money here.

I expected to see some McCain signs along with the Obama signs at some point, but as time passed, they were still few and far between. The McCain campaign took it for granted that North Carolina would vote red, so they didn’t spend any of their resources here.

But about two or three weeks ago, I started seeing McCain signs popping up on lawns like mushrooms. They are still outnumbered by the Obama signs, but the difference is hard to miss. The McCain crew has been spending more time here, their volunteers have been making sure their marketing materials are visible, I see their ads on TV, and the McCain and Palin themselves have even started making visits here.

However, Obama is now leading in NC (although not by much). I think by taking us for granted, McCain lost NC.

I have noticed that this year around Austin Texas. Republicans with blue signs and not stating their party.

Also I have seen one McCain bumpersticker, on a Humvee. Obama stickers and signs are everywhere though. But this is Austin, the oasis of blue and the red desert of Texas.

I have noticed that blue seems to be the magic color for everybody, with red and white accents, for the past several presidential elections (McCain is a bit unusual in that red isn’t a prominent accent color on his signage). It’s as if it’s the kiss of death to not go with something along the red white and blue theme.

I wish some day a candidate would go with something different — green, orange, yellow…ANYTHING that would stand out from the field of sameness. But they’d probably be labeled “unpatriotic” if they deviated.

And I’ve noticed (here in NC, anyway), that candidates for all offices and from both parties tend to avoid putting their party on their signs. The only reason I can figure is that the signs are marketing to the independents — the partisan voters who care about party tend to vote straight ticket anyway.

  45. galmud says:

Barack Obama is more ready and prepared to be president than McCain has ever been or ever will be.

McCain calls Obamas extensive preparations for the transition presumptuous and then in the next breath he says Obama is naive and irresponsible.

Whats recklessly presumptuous and irresponsible is thinking you dont need to prepare to be president. That you dont need to go through a steep learning curve first few months in office. That you dont need to study and learn new things.

Back in June, Gordon Smith got in trouble for using green & yellow, but not for being unpatriotic.

    Keltoi, gummitch & Miss Molly,

I have only seen a few McCain sign in my town. They are far outnumbered by Obama signs.

Saturday I was in Clearwater County, which is a very red part of the state, and I only saw two McCain signs. I was proud to see my Dad’s street chock full of Obama signs.

The strange thing is, that the two McCain signs I saw in Clearwater County had the name “Sarah” in big letters, and McCain/Palin underneath in smaller lettering.

There were way more signs for Sali, which is sad because he’s a f ucking dumbass.

I think you are all reading too much into this. As I remember back, almost all the signs I see have nothing more on them than the name of the candidate and the office they are running for. That’s pretty much the way it has always been, as far as I remember. Probably has to do with wanting your name to be big on the sign and not waste real estate with something like party affiliation.

Shows how classy McCain supporters are, and how desperate. I’m betting every one of those Obama lawn signs are replaced by the end of day today. But…maybe not. My Obama headquarters keeps running out of lawn signs. They fly out the door as quickly as the campaign workers can get them in.

It’s possible someone is speaking something about party affiliation, but I’ve been struck several times that after all the sincere images and thoughtful faces, there is no “Democrat for State House”. Given the absolutely miserable financial condition of the state Republican party, maybe they just aren’t running any ads at all.

That’s certainly not true with Gordon Smith. I see 10 times more Gordon Smith commercials than Jeff Merkley commercials. That’s why I find it amazing that Merkley is probably going to win. Today they are tied. Smith’s negative ad campaign is backfiring on him the same way McCain’s is. Merkley has come up 5 points in the last couple of weeks. I have total confidence that Merkley will win, especially with Obama so far ahead of McCain in Oregon. I just can’t imagine how someone could vote for Smith and Obama. That makes no sense.

Ah no the GOP has shown that the way to win modern elections in the 21st Century is to purge the election lists of as many undesirable names as possible and LIE early and LIE constantly. They wont fool everyone but they think there are enough braindead sheeple like YOU to win the day. It just isnt working this time. Have another swig of Kool-aid and go back into your intellectual coma.

Don’t study the issues, don’t learn from the past. Just act on impulse like Bush has and look where it has gotten us.

  78. Chocolate Jesus says:

“the Next President won’t Have The Luxury Of Studying Up On The Issues”

amazing that mccain has the gall to make this statement knowing full well he is dying of cancer and if he wins its almost a 100 percent certainty that he’d be turning the reigns of power over to a mildly retarded, america hating successionist religious nut who thinks armageddon and the destruction of the world is the best ending ever for a book.

my hatred for mccain is, quite amazingly, reaching even further heights than than the loating I have for cheney and bush. mccain’s incompetence and “win at all costs” decision making could very well start world war III and end the human race. this man needs to be ridiculed and mocked mercilesslesy until the weight of the emotional abuse crushes his soul and robs his of what little will to live he has left. and I’d happily go to jail if i get the opportunity to piss on his grave someday.

its becoming more and more obvious that Palin’s redneck meth addled militia lovin white trash inbred husband is the puppetteer behind her rise to power..can you imagine this child abusing, angry, vindictive hick with his finger on the button? scaaary

Bilbo…we had to count the votes in Washington 3 times before our candidate finally won. Rossi gave up without a fight……

Ah, the delusion is strong in this one. Rossi gave up without a fight!? No, he whined and he whined, and finally, after the count was shown to be correct — he whined some more — and then gave up WITH A WHIMPER.

It was quite entertaining to watch!

  80. Game of Life says:

    mcchimpy is loo-loo.
We already know his rash decisions are dangerous and foolish.

mcchimpy doesn’t give details, he’s all huff-n-puff. And he doesn’t understand strategic moves, that is too confusing for the both of them. Look how they run their campaign.

What makes mcchimpy an expert on foreign policies? he’s was wrong about Georgia, Iraq.

What makes mcchimpy an expert on military policies? his bff betrayus, gets mcchimpy’s talking points wrong all the time.
he’s wrong about the surge too.

    What innate idiots

You’ve got to give it to John Sidney. He sure knows how to turn a phrase.

  82. Robt says:

    Choose wisely….!

Remember. The last 8 years we have had a President that did not think things through even when he had plenty of time to do so.

How did his “gut” reactions serve you?

You are so much better off today? You want the economy to continue in Bush’s fiscal direction until the next job loss is your own?

Vote and choose wisely, pal. (I mean my friends).

  83. the Lone Voice of Reason says:

Speaking of job loss, Elkhart County, Indiana, had over 10,000 job losses this year (not far from my neck of the woods). I’d say they would think they are not better off than they were before. :(

  84. Jericho says:

Yes! Bomb now, inspect later. Drill now, conserve later. Bail out now, pay through the nose later.

It’s the republican “do, don’t think”-mantra, slightly worse than the democratic “think, don’t do”-mantra
