The Scranton Times-Tribune notes that yet another McCain supporter at a rally today with Gov. Sarah Palin yelled “kill him!” in reference to Sen. Barack Obama:
Chris Hackett addressed the increasingly feisty crowd as they await the arrival of Gov. Palin. Each time the Republican candidate for the seat in the 10th Congressional District mentioned Barack Obama the crowd booed loudly. One man screamed “kill him!”
Last Monday, a supporter also yelled “kill him” at a rally. In the past weeks, McCain supporters have called Obama “an Arab,” “Little Hussein,” and a “terrorist.” (HT: TPM)
UPDATE: At a rally in Virginia Beach, a supporter yelled “Obama bin Laden!“:
Yeah, this is exactly the same thing that Rachel Maddow does

Do you suppose it would be asking too much for the Secret Service which is there anyway to perhaps sit these people down and mention that screaming “kill him” at a political rally could perhaps result in ending up under surveillance or even arrest depending on the degree of the perceived threat?
October 14th, 2008 at 3:32 pmI believe Gonzo would have the same thing to say about these people as those who voted for Bu$h in ‘00:
“We have become a Nazi monster in the eyes of the whole world — a nation of bullies and bastards who would rather kill than live peacefully. We are not just Whores for power and oil, but killer whores with hate and fear in our hearts. We are human scum, and that is how history will judge us. No redeeming social value. Just whores. Get out of our way, or we’ll kill you. “Well, sh1t on that dumbness, George W. Bush does not speak for me or my son or my mother or my friends or the people I respect in this world. We didn’t vote for these cheap, greedy little killers who speak for America today — and we will not vote for them again in 2002. Or 2004. Or ever. “Who does vote for these dishonest sh1theads? Who among us can be happy and proud of having all this innocent blood on our hands? Who are these swine? These flag-sucking half-wits who get fleeced and fooled by stupid rich kids like George Bush? “They are the same ones who wanted to have Muhammad Ali locked up for refusing to kill gooks. They speak for all that is cruel and stupid and vicious in the American character. They are the racists and hate mongers among us — they are the Ku Klux Klan. I piss down the throats of these Nazis. “And I am too old to worry about whether they like it or not. Fu(k them.”

Some leader McIIIrd is. Not more than four days ago he told his supporters to be respectful, and look at the result.
Of course, his ads are portraying Obama as somewhat to the left of Che Guevera, but that couldn’t be having as much effect as McIIIrd’s request for respect, could it?
October 14th, 2008 at 3:33 pmPalin attracts the lowest common denominators like it’s nobody’s business. What kind of person would yell that? Joe Sixpack?
That guy should be forced to wear one of the Drill Palin, Not Alaska shirts!
October 14th, 2008 at 3:34 pmAnd McCain stated that he would bring up Ayers again–way to fan the flames of ignorance Grampy
October 14th, 2008 at 3:35 pmY’know, this is the strangest phenomenon I think I have ever seen…I can’t recall anyone screaming “kill him” in reference to Gore or Kerry. This leads me to believe it has GOT to be racially motivated. I guess the thing that baffles me is that there are people who think showing up to a campaign rally and yelling those things is in anyway helpful to their cause, which is presumbably to win the election. If their goal is really to kill him, some quiet planning just might be a bit more to the point.
So – I guess it is official for any who doubted: Racism is dumb. I just find it amazing that there are any racists that dumb that they are also open about it at political rallies. Somone should buy them a calendar.
October 14th, 2008 at 3:35 pmYeah kill him, and save the idiot who got us all tangled in a criminal war.
Yeah kill him, and save the idiot because thanks to Bush we, the ‘have mores’, have even more!
Yeah kill him, because he is black and racism is our daily bread and butter.
And save the idiot because no matter how bad he screws up we get richer and richer!

Yes it is. Not physical dementia but social dementia.
October 14th, 2008 at 3:37 pmTwo guys equipped with scoped-rifles, wigs and other paraphernalia consistent with an assassination attempt were arrested by police in Denver after being alerted by a hotel. One of those arrested attested in writing that he and his accomplice were plotting to assassinate Obama, after first claiming that he was on his way to a hunting trip ( so why the wigs?).
The Denver DA then insisted that it was all a misunderstanding, despite the evidence and the sworn statement that indicated otherwise. I don;t know these suspects status now, I assume no charges have been brought.
This would be thanks to the Denver police department who distributed or made available to their officers T-shirts that said “we get up early to beat the crowds” with a graphic of a cop wielding a baton–specifically for the DNC convention.
Nicely spake, Kelty. Don’t forget to buy them some dye for those out of date white sheets with the holes precut…

Can you just imagine the outrage, the reaction, the anger that would spout forth from the Right were anyone remotely near an Obama campaign event advocated for the murder of John McCain or Sarah Palin?
I am waiting for McCain or Palin to step up, grow a pair, and tell their supporters “Thanks, but no thanks” for the calls to kill Obama. Senator Obama doesn’t even let his crowds get away with boo’ing McCain. Whatever happened to “drill baby drill”?

Check out this bombshell tidbit of information:
Amy Goodman breezes by the story of the century
October 14, 2008
Amy Goodman talks with James Bamford, an American bestselling author and journalist who writes about United States intelligence agencies, and he drops a bomb shell (which doesn’t seem to warrant a follow-up question from Ms Goodman) about how the 9/11 plotters set-up shop within eye site (sans trees – 6.1 miles) of NSA Headquarters, worked out at the nearby Gold’s Gym, shopped at the nearby Safeway and ate at the same restaurants as NSA employees.
October 14th, 2008 at 3:48 pmYou’re missing the point there Keltoi. The point is that McCain and Palin, by virtue of their attack ads and their OWN words calling Obama someone who “pals around with terrorists” and someone who is “unamerican,” “unknown,” “doesn’t see america like you and I do” and on and on they are FOSTERING the environment that brings about these sorts of outbursts. At the very least they are being irresponsible and playing a dangerous game. When these outbursts happen and they DON’T condemn them (except that ONE time McCain tried) they are tacitly APPROVING of them.
The one time McCain tried and then got BOOED by EVERYONE in that crowd just goes to show how far this has come. If he had been stopping this from day one he wouldn’t have been booed, or if he was booed anyway that says A LOT about the type of supporters he and Palin are courting don’t you think?

October 14th, 2008 at 3:53 pmYo! RHF! How ya doin?
October 14th, 2008 at 3:53 pmI like to think that most McCain supporters are content with booing Obama and/or his policies (as described by McCain and Palin, whether true or not). I would hope that those openly calling for physical harm to be done to Obama represent a small minority of McCain’s supporters.
But even though it’s a small number, it should not be tolerated. If, at an anti-war protest (or any protest gathering), somebody was carrying a sign that said “assassinate the President”, I would imagine the Secret Service would be all over that person. Expressing a dissenting opinion is protected by the First Amendment. Expressing remarks to incite violence or making overt threats is not.
McCain did call for his supporters to “respect” his opponent. Even though it wasn’t that forceful, at least he said something. Palin has not. Instead, she smirks and winks at the remarks, even responding with, “you get it!”.
This is shameful.

No Keltoi. Flippy McSpin deserves no credit for getting booed at his own rallies. An honorable man would great such filth with an immediate order to security to have the person removed. Just like he would for any heckler who disagreed with him. Alas, Flippy McSpin is hardly a man and any pretense of honor has been sacrificed for partisanship and personal gratification.
October 14th, 2008 at 4:04 pmNo, that is Hunter Thompson’s quote, pulled from the book “Kingdom of Fear”.

There may be anger at Obama rallies, but it is about eight years of damage to the country and Constitution (not to mention many thousands of lives lost, and the Republicans’ plans for more of the same — not a call to murder the Republican candidate.

I don’t completely disagree…and at this point, they are courting the type of supporters who have a pulse (unlike ACORN, who registered Mickey Mouse and as an animation does not have a pulse, but I digress).
They are losing, they are desperate. But the dangerous game you cite, and the strongest point in your argument, is that while they may feel “desperate” like politicians losing an election do, they either do not realize or do not care the level of desperation there is among the lunatic fringe of their party at the thought of President Obama.
Politics is a very nasty business. It will be good when this election is over if this is where the process is sinking to.

October 14th, 2008 at 4:09 pmWe are finally seeing the face and hearing the direct words of the truly mindless and demagogic 23-percenters. the rabid unthinking lizard-brain minority that has served as a vital foundation for the GOP for the last 30 years and who the GOP has empowered by constantly appealing to their xenophobia and encouraging their ignorance as a virtue.
With what seems like half the conservative opinion-makers criticizing McCain not for his policies or the tenor of the campaign it but for it’s pure political ineptitude, the GOP establishment has pulled the rug out from under their fundamentalist base. The bigots and morons are rallying behind their only hope for direction and affirmation and McCain therefore has to rally behind them and affirm their views and perceptions.
October 14th, 2008 at 4:10 pmWhereas the most liberal of Democrats, the really “loony left”, will usually end up supporting a ‘fringe’ organization such as the Green Party or Ralph Nader or the Communist Party or some such out of principled disgust most of the ‘radical right’ appear to side with the ‘establishment’ GOP for two reasons; a) because the GOP has pandered to them and b) because they are predisposed to accepting proscribed order dictated by a leader to a leadership that inherently cannot question. Ergo rather than succumb to any intellectual doubt they declare their support for their supposed champion ever more loudly.
And that I think is what we are observing now in the McCain/Palin rallies. And those who are in the real eye of this storm, the politicians rather than the political pundits, now have no room to maneuver–either McCain and Palin (and the likes of Inhofe etc) accept the responsibilities they have encouraged to be thrust upon them or they accept defeat which is anathema in the Manichean “might is right” world that the GOP and their supporters have so carefully constructed. McCain/Palin have been caught in a political ‘death spiral’ but in by their actions and inactions there is an increasing chance that actual death might occur–Obama’s to be precise.

October 14th, 2008 at 4:17 pmAw jeez Keltoi. Have you fallen for the “ACORN voter fraud” crap?
Here’s the deal. While it’s true a few fraudulent registrations made it through, something like 9,800 of the @10,000 “fraudulent registrations” were submitted to the FEC because ACORN officials recognized them as fraudulent. That’s the law and ACORN followed it. Now the Reichwhiner noise machine is claiming that these registrations were submitted in an effort to defraud the election when, in fact, they were turned in to the proper authorities for investigation.
Plus the obvious fact that no “voter fraud” has taken place until someone actually tries to utilize a fraudulent registration to cast a fraudulent vote. Hardly comparable to encouraging people to foment violence.

October 14th, 2008 at 4:58 pmLewis was correct this is how things started in the pass as innocent people were attacked and killed. Most people aren’t violent but it takes a crowd to incite these actions and one or two people take it to the next step. If this continues we will see someone get hurt or killed. Using the racist words will allow people to take it out on any minority they see. I remember when Cneney, Goodwin and Schwartz were missing during the Civil Rights area many innocent blacks were killed because the Federal Govenment stepped in to find them and look at the actions of the KKK. Kids just walking home were taken tortured and hung from tress. Yes it all staarted with actions like the McCain/Palin team are doing. Again those who lead the attacking words always said they didn’t do it.

I had no idea people would freak out over a bit of a witticism over voters with pulses as opposed to those who did not. The rather shrill reaction is telling.
But, my bad – no humor allowed.
That’s a lame response when Rush gets caught and uses it, too.
“Just kidding, folks… heh, heh.”
October 14th, 2008 at 7:46 pmIt’s terrible, I know, but I have to say that given the direction of the polls and the poisonous rhetoric coming from the extreme right, it seems that the outcome of this election and the fate of the nation now rests on the ability of the Secret Service to protect Sen. Obama.

Actually, the folks at McPain/Stalin rallies are too F-in’ stoooopid to be anything BUT literal in what they say, and yes, that sort of behavior is illegal.
This is getting uglier and scarier by the incident.
October 14th, 2008 at 9:34 pmNot any of McCain, Palin, nor these ignorant racist sinners’ attacks of hatred, fear, racism, and division WILL EVER PREVAIL against Sen. Obama – this nation’s next Commander-in-Chief !!!

October 15th, 2008 at 1:48 amABOUT THE CONSEQUENCES OF INCITEMENT AND REP. LEWIS’S WARNING
Rep. Lewis’s statement is clear about what he wanted to accomplish–that McCain’s campaign rallies not continue to incite the crowd to hatred with a prospect of creating social unrest and schism. That is a noble intervention and it is timely, McCain’s self-righteous indignation notwithstanding. Lewis simply stated the truth which many in the McCain camp (and some in the media) may not want to hear; but it is a statement of wisdom. He said: “George Wallace never threw a bomb. He never fired a gun, but he created the climate and the conditions that encouraged vicious attacks against innocent Americans who were simply trying to exercise their constitutional rights.” Lewis’s concern was about “creating an atmosphere of hatred.” He was not saying that McCain was doing many of the nasty things that Wallace did in his life. No objective observer would dispute the fact that hatred was being stirred at McCain-Palin rallies by words—words by some supporters and by the candidates themselves. In Western European democratic systems, McCain and Palin and Co. open themselves up for a charge of incitement to hatred. What would they say for their defense should any danger or harm result from the way they have been conducting this campaign? That is why Lewis warned that McCain and Palin and handlers are playing with fire! If harm should result it likely will lead toin unmentionable social rupture. No responsible citizen wants that!
