‘Axis Of Evil’ Author Compares Rachel Maddow To Racist Hecklers

Last night on MSNBC, Rachel Maddow hosted David Frum, former speechwriter to President Bush, to discuss the increasingly nasty — and sometimes racist — tone among some of the attendees at McCain-Palin rallies. Frum has been openly critical of the McCain campaign, and Maddow intended to discuss his concerns about the campaign’s turn toward negativity.

From his first answer, however, it was clear Frum had a very different agenda: to attack Rachel Maddow. Discussing the “ugliness of tone” in American politics, he said that Maddow’s show, “unfortunately, is itself an example of that problem.” He then compared her tone to the hateful outbursts of some McCain-Palin supporters:

MADDOW: Do you think that my tone on this show is equivalent to people calling Barack Obama somebody who pals around with terrorists, people yelling from the audience at McCain-Palin rallies, Bomb Obama. Kill him. Off with his head. Traitor. Are you accusing me of an equivalence in tone?

FRUM: I don’t think that’s an important question. I think the question is, given the small plate of responsibility that you personally have, how do you manage that responsibility? The fact that other people fail in other ways is not an excuse for you failing in your way.

MADDOW: But you did just say it’s the same thing, that you’re seeing the same thing on this show in a lot -

(CROSS TALK)

FRUM: I worry about that.

Watch it:

It’s laughable for Frum to be lecturing Maddow on striking an appropriate tone. It was David Frum, after all, who coined the phrase “Axis of Evil,” writing it into Bush’s 2002 State of the Union address. After leaving the White House, Frum helped fund a smear campaign against House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) when she visited Syria. He attacked Al Gore for speaking out against Bush’s foreign policy, saying, “Maybe a National Psychological Council would be a good idea after all … [Gore] ought to seek out for his own good a cool and quiet darkened room.”

In the past weeks, McCain supporters have called Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) “an Arab,” “Little Hussein,” and a “terrorist.” They have declared themselves to be “scared” of an Obama presidency, and have likened him to a monkey. By contrast, Maddow has consistently welcomed guests who disagree with her — including Frum himself — and has interviewed conservatives and progressives alike with dignity and poise, even when the interviewee decides to attack her and her show. Perhaps that’s why Maddow’s ratings continue to skyrocket.

I watched this in amazement! Frum was being an a–hole. Rachel was very tactful and handled herself very well. Frum was a total jerk. You cannot compare Maddow’s commentary to someone saying “Kill him.” They are not comparable.

    Frum was way off base.

and Frum’s ratings & his Party’s ratings look like Wall St charts.

The true ‘Axis of Evil’ was Cheney, Rumsfeld & the DoD.

And Frum, since when is Democracy spread by invasions & bombs?
America’s global role is to generate ideas, not wars. The same people who thought democracy should be a war machine should now be put in a public square so all of us can express to them personally how we ‘feel’ about these failed, stupid self-absorbed tactics.

I saw this last night, and while Rachel was caught off guard, she did a masterful job of putting this blowhard in his place.

As always, Maddow’s brains and knowledge beat out bluster and bullsh!t.

    PEACE

  7. Marie says:

I saw this with a smile on my face as Rachel Maddow showed grace and poise while being blindsided by her foolish-looking guest.
Frum was cheap, low, and did himself no favor in his unwarranted attack on Maddow, particularly when one considers his own past behavior. He looked like an a$$.

  8. tarazan says:

Maddow always backs her stories with facts.
But Right Wingers talk show hosts ,radio, newspaper, and television most of the time they distort facts.
Facts to them is not that important.

  9. The Dogfather says:

I watched that last night, and found it incredible that Rachel was able to keep her cool (as usual) in the face of Frumpy’s unprovoked maliciousness directed against her. He simply proved the point she was trying to make — that the negativity of the McPalin campaign (and now of Frumpy as well) is maligning the political process itself by causing any discussion of politics to devolve into empty-headed name-calling.

It was good to see that Rachel kept her dignity and stayed above the cesspool that Frumpy so ably exemplified last night.

  10. IgnoranceIsNotBliss says:

Rachel handled herself extremely well last night. She had Frum pretty flustered. I guess he expected her to crawl up in a ball and start crying or else jump up and start ranting. She was very poised and eloquent. She put him in his place very nicely and professionally.

This guy may have “been openly critical of the McCain campaign,” (so has Bill Kristol lately) but he is still a Republican apologist through and through. His criticism of the McCain campaign does not mean he wants Obama to win.

The fact that the only response he has is the tried and true Republican line “but you do it too!” just goes to show that they really do have NOTHING. I’ll repeat that. They have NOTHING. He doesn’t answer the charge that McCain and Palin’s rallies, their tacit approval of those outbursts, and the atmosphere THEY HAVE FOSTERED that breeds these outbursts, are despicable and dangerous but instead tries to paint Maddow (and therefore ALL Democrats and Liberals because we’re all the same) as just as bad.

Ridiculous. Kudos to Rachel as always. I remember listening to her on AAR and she has always been this good and this classy.

  16. RUCerious says:

Maddow’s ‘plate of responsibility’ is being handled quite nicely, thank you. She provides an alternative to the Shammity’s, O’Biley’s and Bukkannons of the media world.

Frum’s plate of responsibility for sowing hate and distrust on the national level is giganormous. He should choke on being forced to clean it up, every last bite of crow.

    My email to Rachel:

    Dear Rachel:

Well, you got sandbagged last night. All of a sudden, Frum decries that the Republican Party will have some serious rebuilding to do, and he wants you to get serious in helping him rebuild it. Where was he when his party, and his President was systematically dismantling it? Where was he when his party acted with impunity – Cheney answering “so?” when pressed about how the American people were overwhelmingly against the Iraq Occupation, Bush backing torture, claiming “executive privilege” when pressed about their abuses of power, ripping this economy to shreds with debt and ripping our international standing to shreds with cowboy diplomacy and on and on?

If Frum wants to have an intelligent discourse, let him and his side of the aisle bring something intelligent to discourse about. Don’t simply give us a package of a party in shambles, where most of the Republican Congresspeople running for reelection seem to highlight the word “independent” on their own websites and seem to shun any mention of Republican. We didn’t start the fire, yet we had accusations of being unpatriotic rubbed in our faces when we were alarmed. Sorry Frum, we are well beyond intelligent discourse, but you and you ilk pushed us there with your attack first mode of interaction.

You were simply being asked to elaborate on your word of “fury” in your recent commentary. This was NOT done in satire or humor and this COULD have resulted in the very kind of conversation that your say is lacking. But your response was to level an attack. How predictable!

Sometimes humor is the only outlet to communicate things that engender rage or at least helplessness. As Barack said yesterday, we don’t need that (the boo chants), we just need to vote. Change is coming.

    Sincerely,

Well said. Of course we know that intelligent discourse will never happen because the Republicans cannot run an honest campaign based on their conservative ideology and win. They can only win with fear tactics, wedge issues, and dishonesty.

Fortunately, this election, the American people are seriously pissed off, and because you can’t be furious and scared at the same time, the fear factor has been removed from the race.

That leaves them with wedge issues and ad hominem attacks. Oh, and lies. Lots and lots of lies.

Here is another example of how “responsible” the right-wing and the Unstable/Unable ticket is. This is their most recent “fund-raising” letter — nothing more than a thinly-veiled setup for more culture wars, voter suppression, contesting of election results and divisiveness:

    My Friends:

We need your help to ensure a fair and honest election. Already we have seen nationwide voter registration fraud by ACORN – a group closely linked to Barack Obama.

ACORN is under investigation for fraudulent activities in at least 11 states and they are accused of wrongdoing in many others. Election officials across the country have reported that 40-50% percent of registrations being turned in by ACORN are fictitious and are clogging up the system.

We have seen corruption in nearly every contested state:

Connecticut: local investigators are reviewing numerous reports of registration fraud committed by ACORN, including one case where a 7 year-old girl was registered to vote.
Florida: ACORN submitted hundreds of duplicate registrations to the Seminole County Supervisor of Elections.
Indiana: Almost half of the 5,000 registrations submitted by ACORN in Gary have been rejected for fraud and other irregularities.
Missouri: ACORN is being blamed for hundreds of bogus and duplication registration applications that are “bogging down the system.”
Nevada: The Las Vegas office of ACORN was raided by state law enforcement for its alleged involvement in voter fraud. In addition to registering the Dallas Cowboys starting line-up, ACORN also used prison inmates through a work release program to conduct voter registration activities.
New Mexico: ACORN was exposed for employing numerous felons to collect voter registrations including sex offenders and persons accused of identity theft. The FBI is currently investigating 1,400 registrations.
Ohio: ACORN admitted to Cuyahoga County election officials that it cannot eliminate fraud from its operation. The Board has been investigating ACORN registrations since August.
Pennsylvania: Thousands of ACORN registrations have been turned over to federal authorities for investigation.
Wisconsin: 39 ACORN employees are under investigation for registration fraud and 2 have already been indicted.

ACORN’s activities are poisoning the political system while advocating for Barack Obama’s campaign. Make no mistake about it: voter registration fraud has only one purpose and that is voter fraud.

We need you to sign up today to ensure that this election is not stolen.

If you haven’t done so already, we still need your commitment to volunteer to participate in our campaign’s Election Day and Pre-Election Day voting activities. Please sign up to help at the Elections Day Operation Sign Up website today.

There are many ways you can help reduce voter fraud during this election. Examples include serving as an election monitor, participating in a legal response team, and serving in an election response center. Roles exist for concerned citizens, attorneys, and law students.

We urgently need you to volunteer both on Election Day and during Pre-Election Day voting. Voters are already casting ballots in some states, and will be doing so in additional ones as each day passes. We need your help today.

Whether you can travel to a contested state to help protect the integrity of this election, or prefer to help closer to home, sign up today. A representative from the campaign will be in touch with you shortly to explain the program in more detail, confirm your willingness to join the McCain-Palin Election Day Legal Program, and arrange the logistics of your participation.

Thank you again for your concern for fair and honest elections, and for your continued support for our campaign.

It’s okay for them to cheat and steal two elections, gerrymander to their benefit, and encourage violence against their opponents, but a few angry liberal voters possibly faked a few registration cards and they act like it was something new and unfathomable. “Hateful outbursts”? “Ugly tone”? Methinks Frum is projecting. If Rachel has been hateful, hurling insulting names, and calling for the death of those she disagrees with, I’ve missed it.

Even with jerks like Frum, she takes the high road — dismantling with class instead of slugging it out in the gutter.

It sounds like Frum doesn’t actually watch Rachel’s show — he just assumes that the “evil liberals” employ Limbaugh-like tone on their shows, because that’s all he understands. But one doesn’t have to use bombast and vitriol when just the simple truth is far more effective.

Maddow and Olbermann host the best two hours of political talk on any network. The right wing has been after Maddow since long before she had a show on MSNBC. She’s probably the most knowledgeable talking head anywhere.

Frum is a FLUNKIE whose job it is to SMEAR anyone who opposes the neoconservative agenda. Frum has no standing whatsoever to accuse Rachael Maddow of being no better than the wingnuts at McCain/Palin events who advocate the MURDER of Senator Obama. I have yet to see or hear anything like it at Obama/Biden events. In fact, whenever McCain gets boo’d at an Obama event, Obama cuts them off.

The right is beside itself knowing that its reign of terror is almost over. Barack Hussein Obama will become the next president of the United States. He and Joe Biden will put this country back on track and will spend all of their first term in office trying to fix all of the messes that eight years of Bush/Cheney have left behind.

I could tell that she was initially caught off guard, but she stood her ground like no other “commentator” on our side that I’ve seen. Most would have asked a follow up (maybe) then eventually just backed down, but she did not. It was so incredibly refreshing.

And, this may be weird because I might sound like a total butt-kisser here, but the class with which she dealt w/ Frum reminded me of our own Miss Molly when dealing with trolls… Mainly with having the patience to give them the benefit of the doubt that they actually believe what they are saying (when it’s most likely the case that they don’t) and moving from there instead of being in attack mode from the start. Since they don’t usually believe those things anyway they end up on the defensive and looking quite ridiculous because they thought they would just get away with saying it with no resistance. Maybe it’s something we all can learn from… (maybe ;)

Maddow is my favorite talking head but i think everyone here is a little blinded by ideology. Maddow does a better job of actually attacking facts and specifics during her show at times. However I think Frum is right that too much of her show is about Troopergate, or “the first dude,” or other non-issues instead of actual policy. ALL comentators are guilty of that, and we ALL need to raise the political discourse, whether MSNBC or Fox News.

  54. Pete Tagliani says:

That was indeed interesting. I hope more talking head shows follow the Maddow approach.

Frum, like most commentators armed with talking points, thought that his one-size-fits-all approach to attacking the “liberal media” would work here.

Maddow politely took his argument apart and handed it back to him, as if to say, “Pardon me sir. You seemed to have dropped this huge pile of bulls#*t. I’ll just wrap it up in a doggie bag so you can take it home with you.”

This nastiness is so unbecoming to the American people.” Will they shut up Limbaugh, O’Reily, Hannity and Ingraham? Frum and his clique are extraordinary hypocrites.

  61. Winski says:

It was clear that Frum had no intention of staying on topic but had his own agenda. He was there to do one thing – discredit Maddow/MSNBC in any form as an outlet for ‘intelligent’ opinion. Frum truly believes in his heart that his/AEI’s investigatory prowess is the only one that means anything to anyone – anywhere. It’s also clear that he believes that Wolfowitz recommending that the US start enhancing it’s Nuclear Weapons program is right on target.

It continues to amaze that anyone listens to these people, but it’s clear there is an underlying dedication to getting the planet blown up they are striving to accomplish.

Truly scary folks and if they are not exposed for what they are, they may get their wish.

Like there is this great evil worm, undulating under the Earth, waiting for us to put our guns away for a sec.

Why are these people so scared of life and our Earth?

I say, screw these bozos. They are out of ideas.

maybe it was my own projection, but when rachel said,
    after that confrontation (my take),
“you can email me at rachel@msnbc.com“,
i detected a note of appeal in her voice
sent a note of thanks and congratulations!
    she sure deserved it!

  71. dfletcher says:

    katy: great idea!

I just sent one too :-)

Always good to hear opinions from that world noted political genius Maddow!!!

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Apparantly she is eviscerating moronic rightwing stooges like Frum. Try to keep up

  73. katy says:

MADDOW: [...] yelling from the audience at McCain-Palin rallies, Bomb Obama. Kill him. Off with his head. Traitor. Are you accusing me of an equivalence in tone?

    FRUM: I don’t think that’s an important question. …

is when i yelled at him, “IT’S IMPORTANT TO HER!!!”

    and so i missed this:
“…given the small plate of responsibility that you personally have…”

what a jerkazz thing to say! trying to degrade her role…

  74. Keith says:

Frum was saying Rachel was low just for using sarcasm, while he wrote some of the 935 lies costing a million lives and $3 Trillion.

For one thing, she has a PhD in Political Science. What kind of degree in Political Science do you have? And she’s had her own radio program for several years now. What time is your radio program on? And now she has one of the best, and definitely the fastest growing, cable news show on television. What time is your TV show on?

I have long considered you a jerk, Mr. “Kerry”. And you prove it every time you post here.

  76. whisper74 says:

All I could think after watching Frum last night was, “umm.. wow..”

Talk about Republicans following McCain’s leadership with regards to being respectful. Oh that’s right: McCain today made some comment about “that Chicago senator” today.

    So much for respect.

Kudos to Rachel Maddow for how she handled him. Don’t know about anyone else, but I’m looking forward to that Paul Wolfowitz interview..!

    ;)

  77. wetblanket says:

Frum put Maddow in her place. He took the happy, or should I say gay, smirk off her face. If she was so composed, why did she nervously thank him three times at the end of the segment? Because she was shaking in her boots from having her a#@ handed to her. He pointed out that she attempts to deal with serious issues with sarcasm, slant, tongue and cheek commentary and no credibility. Further proof her panties were in a bunch from the Frum pounding was when the weasel O’lberman went on his show to defend her- in his usual lame way.(Maddow and O’lby both think the raised eyebrow is comedic genius?) I am waiting for Olby to adopt Fonzie’s AAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

  78. Keith says:

    From Wikipedia:

Maddow later obtained a degree in public policy from Stanford University in 1994.[2] At graduation she was awarded the prestigious John Gardner Fellowship. She then received a Rhodes Scholarship in 1995 and used it to obtain a D.Phil. in political science from Lincoln College, Oxford University.

  79. Keith says:

And yes wetblanket, she is gay (gasp). What’s that supposed to prove? That you are narrow-minded?

  80. wetblanket says:

You are up at 4:30 in the morning and all you take from comments is the gay remark and you add a little copy and past about your heros education? My eyebrows are raised in idignation(ala Maddow) for effect.

  81. Keith says:

wetblanket, it was only 4:30 am Eastern Standard Time. Not everyone lives there. For example, if I was in London, it would have been 9:30 am. You said “What the hell is she doing on TV?”. Well, she is very entertaining and she was a Rhodes Scholar and has a Phd. in political science from Oxford. Quite a bit better than you or Rush Limbaugh (dropped out after one year at SW Missouri State).

  82. pointus says:

Thank God for Rachel Maddow. Her show is informative, thoughtful, funny and entertaining. I’m very glad I kept bugging MSNBC to give her a time slot of her own.
It was wonderful to see how she took NONE of Frum’s bulls**t… not one bit of it.

  83. nightslider says:

The lady is a jewel, how else can you explain her casualness in laying out the slug bait for the nocturnal snail that slimed its way onto her show last night? damn if the little bugger didn’t dissolve from the exposure to her kindly ways.
What a creep, Rachel is so cool she let the ass leave with his ego intact(?)= “Subjective*” or did she? the fool probably thinks he got one over on her when in reality how many millions saw a slime ball for what he is?

Good show Rachel: love ya for your steadfastness in the face of adversity. Your so COOOOOL

  84. ThereIsNoSanctuary says:

I also want to add my kudos to Rachel Maddow for handling this as the consummate professional she is. Well done! Other reporters could learn a lot from her. I wish she, Jon Stewart, and Keith Olbermann had hosted the debates.

I heard a rumor that David Frum had to sell his bed and get rid of all the mirrors in his house, because he can’t sleep at night and he has no reflection. Don’t know if it’s true, though.
