On Sunday, Time magazine’s Karen Tumulty reported on how the chairman of the Virgina Republican Party, Jeff Frederick, compared Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) to Osama Bin Laden by telling campaign volunteers that they “both have friends that bombed the Pentagon”:
With so much at stake, and time running short, Frederick did not feel he had the luxury of subtlety. He climbed atop a folding chair to give 30 campaign volunteers who were about to go canvassing door to door their talking points — for instance, the connection between Barack Obama and Osama bin Laden: “Both have friends that bombed the Pentagon,” he said. “That is scary.” It is also not exactly true — though that distorted reference to Obama’s controversial association with William Ayers, a former 60s radical, was enough to get the volunteers stoked.
Though the McCain campaign said the comparison was “not appropriate,” Frederick stood by the comparison. McCain himself has said that he needs to “look at the context” of the remarks before commenting. But on Fox News last night, Frederick’s comments got some support. Calling Ayers “a domestic Osama bin Laden,” right-wing pundit Dick Morris declared that it was a “healthy” comparison for Frederick to make:
COLMES: And then after tamping it down, today the RNC comes out with another ad comparing Obama to Ayers. And you have the Republican chair in Virginia who sends out his troops, Jeff Frederick, giving instructions to 30 door-to-door canvassers saying, both have friends who bombed the Pentagon?
MORRIS: What’s the matter with comparing.
COLMES: Is this healthy?
MORRIS: Yes, what’s the matter — it is. What’s the matter with comparing Obama to the guy who introduced him in politics, gave him his first job, and has been a fixture in his campaign.
Watch it:
Morris has previously argued that Obama’s tenuous link to Ayers is “the equivalent of having a close relationship with Osama bin Laden.” As FactCheck.org notes, the right wing is using “false and misleading statements” to make Obama and Ayers out to be close allies, when in fact, their relationship “was never very close.”
Calling Ayers “a domestic Osama bin Laden,” right wing pundit Dick Morris declared that it was a “healthy” comparison for Frederick to make:
Someone needs to ask Morris: “How many innocent people did Ayres kill?” The answer is zero. Then ask him “How many innocent people did McCain kill in Vietnam when he was dropping bombs on villages?” The answer is not zero.

If we want to talk terrorism, how about Bush and his Adm telling America to be afraid, be very afraid. Not just of Al Qaida but from terrorists, Saddam Hussien, Bin Laden (but not his royal family), Liberals, Democrats, The French, Muslim religion, all religions that aren’t christian, those that want to have Gov’t forced abortions, Gov’t standing by and watching people drow during Katrina, to regulations on free markets. The list goes on.

October 14th, 2008 at 12:53 pmMORRIS: What’s the matter with comparing Obama to the guy who introduced him in politics, gave him his first job, and has been a fixture in his campaign.
____________________________________________________________
“Introduced him in politics”: Don’t think so. Obama entered politics when he ran for Illinois State Senate in 1996. His association with Ayers began when both served on the Woods Fund of Chicago board in 1999.
“First job”: Business International Corporation, where Obama worked for a year upon graduating from Columbia. Ayers “gave” him that job? Highly doubtful, since Ayers had no association with that organization. Furthermore, this was back in 1983, long before Obama met Ayers.
“Fixture in his campaign”: Ayers contributed $200 to one of Obama’s state senate re-election campaigns. He also reportedly hosted a coffee fund-raiser for him, as many others have. This hardly constitutes being a “fixture” in any campaign. The only way Ayers has become a “fixture” is due to the McCain team constantly conflating the two.
So, Morris — you’re 0-for-3. Can’t you say anything that contains ANY truth?
October 14th, 2008 at 12:53 pmWhat about Scarah’s ties to the AIP?
October 14th, 2008 at 12:54 pmI don’t condone what Ayres did, but he’s no terrorist. He’s what used to be called a “war protester,” protesting against an unjust and unpopular war, a/k/a doing the wrong thing for the right reason.

“John McCain’s Terrorist Connections”
By John K. Wilson
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/john-k-wilson/john-mccains-terrorist-co_b_133326.html
John McCain has made the distant connections from years ago between Barack Obama and “unrepentant terrorist” Bill Ayers a centerpiece of the McCain-Palin campaign.
But McCain has much closer, more direct, and more recent connections to terrorists who committed acts far worse than Ayers, yet McCain’s links to “unrepentant terrorists” are completely ignored by the media. And although Obama has forcefully condemned the past actions of Ayers, John McCain has never denounced his terrorist friends.
In the 1980s, McCain personally funded a guerrilla group (the Contras) that engaged in terrorist acts. Just last year, McCain expressed how “proud” he was of an ex-felon who urged shooting law enforcement agents in the head (G. Gordon Liddy). And earlier this year, the McCain campaign trumpeted the endorsement of a man who illegally provided weapons and money to terrorists; when a reporter questioned this, the McCain campaign refused to even criticize this criminal (Oliver North).
October 14th, 2008 at 1:05 pmFor McCain “looking at context” means “I’m going to ignore this and hope no one asks me about it again while it works its magic”.
Sometimes a statement is just a statement. There’s no other way to take what was said.
October 14th, 2008 at 1:05 pmso basically the majority of americans are terrorists, right?
the majority supports obama.
therefore, we must all be terrorists.
how far do they think these things thru? not very much apparently.
but then again, we could all be under the magical spell of the magical muslim.
get a grip dummies.
October 14th, 2008 at 1:08 pmDid Colmes actually NOT push back on Morris’ statement that Ayers is a “fixture in Obama’s campaign”?
The only way Ayers is a fixture in anyone’s campaign is via Hillary Clinton, Sean Hannity, McCain/Palin and Fox News.
It is like the retelling of a fish tale where every day the right wing nuts make it worse and worse. From palling around to the Ayers living room to now a fixture in his campaign.
So the new McCain strategy is simply this: blurt out random crap so long as you say Ayers, Osama or terrorist in your sentence.
October 14th, 2008 at 1:08 pmtoasty, I’ll be believing the Osama was a typo when I see a McCU*T ballot.
October 14th, 2008 at 1:10 pmSo, I’m wondering. Why isn’t there the outrage over the revelation that Florida Congressman Tim Mahoney tried to cover up an affair with a staffer that there was over the Foley “scandal”? When the it was revealed that Foley had sent “inappropriate” text messages to an intern, the media called for his resignation and asked the question over and over “what affect does this have on the election?” Now that Foley’s Democratic replacement has been caught with his pants down where is the outcry for his resignation? Why is the Pelosi led House of Representatives putting off his investigation until after the election?
I would submit to you if this was a Republican the media would be running the story over and over and over again. Instead, the story is hardly covered; it’s not even listed on the homepage of cnn.com. It is as talk show host Sean Hannity has said, journalism is dead. Mahoney said that he would restore morality to his office, instead he has further disgraced it. If the media wasn’t in the bag for Obama so much this would be a big story. Instead the media is too concerned with promoting their agenda.
It’s time for the media to start doing their job and report what really happens, not just what they want us to hear. I guess these things only matter if the offender a republican.

October 14th, 2008 at 1:13 pmDon’t forget this.
McCain’s terrorism problem dates back to the early 1990s, when he sided with right-wing domestic terrorists and voted against tough new legislation cracking down on a wave of anti-choice domestic terrorism targeting women who visited abortion clinics, their doctors, and clinic staff.
In both 1993 and 1994, McCain voted against the anti-terrorism measure. On each occasion, McCain was one of thirty radical anti-choice Senators to oppose the bill Fortunately, despite McCain’s opposition, it passed the Senate by a 69-30 margin.

October 14th, 2008 at 1:16 pmMcCain has an interesting relationship with someone that the majority of Americans would consider a criminal, but McCain …not so much.
In 1998 Liddy hosted a fundraiser at his house for John McCain’s re-election campaign at which guests could have their pictures taken with McCain and Liddy.[6] Over the years, Liddy has made four contributions totaling $5,000 to Senator John McCain’s campaigns — including $1,000 in 2007. In November 2007 Senator John McCain, 2008 Presidential candidate, went on Liddy’s radio show. Liddy greeted him as “an old friend,” and McCain replied. “I’m proud of you, I’m proud of your family… It’s always a pleasure for me to come on your program, Gordon, and congratulations on your continued success and adherence to the principles and philosophies that keep our nation great.”
For details about Liddy’s “principles and philosophies that keep our nation great,” read the following article.

What’s not always mentioned is the fact that Mahoney was a lifelong Republican until he switched parties to distance himself from the Foley scandals backlash on Republicans in his state. Pelosi will do nothing for now because the Senate is not officially in session aside from a few Senators watching the store to avoid any Bush recess appointees. Republican trolls have a big problem with consensual hetero relationships but gloss over the perversions and illegal prostitution solicitations of their own hypocrites in office. Mahoney was apparently being blackmailed by his former lover and has asked for an investigation to be opened. Face it troll, YOU’VE GOT NOTHING! As to your so-called “liberal media” bull shit, if reporters and the media were honestly reporting FACTS and ignoring McCain’s racist/terrorist desperation rants, Obama would be up by at least another 10 points. Face it troll, facts have a distinctly liberal bias and your party is circling the toilet.
