Bipartisan House report finds that Bush made ‘inappropriate’ use of executive privilege.

A bipartisan report released today by the House Oversight Committee finds that President Bush made a ‘legally unprecedented and an inappropriate use of executive privilege” when the administration withheld Patrick Fitzgerald’s interview with Vice President Cheney on the CIA leak scandal. A separate report also criticizes Bush’s assertion of executive privilege regarding his recent climate change and Clean Air Act decisions:

On CIA leak scandal: “The assertion of executive privilege prevents the Committee from having access to a complete set of records and thus results in the Committee’s inability to assess fully the actions of the Vice President.

On the environment: “The assertion of executive privilege under these circumstances has stymied the Committee’s investigation of the [California] waiver and ozone decisions. For these reasons, the Committee finds that the President’s assertion of executive privilege is wrong and an abuse of the privilege.

    Strongly worded letter in 3…2..

  4. LiberalVoter says:

5th Estate, Good point, a blue dress is needed. How foolish of me to suggest impeachment without one. This finding also is so far down the list of why Cheney/Bush SHOULD have been impeached there was almost no ink left to print it.

TP, you’re a bit late to the party. HuffPo, TPM and Kos are all over the story of McCain’s transition team chief, Timmons, and his ties to Saddam.

    Perhaps a thread here soon?

  9. spencers mom says:

Call me a cynic, but I suspect the “bipartisan” nature of this report is an effort by the GOP to stop the Obama administration from doing the same thing.

But they needn’t worry because President Obama actually will restore honor and integrity to the office of POTUS.

    PEACE

  10. 5th Estate says:

I couldn’t find out the GOP contingent of this bipartisan committee during the minute that has passed but do you suppose the GOPers on the committee signed-off on the report because they realize that all the powers they allowed Bush to have might now fall in Obama’s lap?
In other words they probably have a desperate need to start backpedaling on the Unitary Executive Theory whilst they still can.

I think killing a million plus innocent Iraqis is probably also a no no and Bush should be given a timeout.

I think the theme today here at thinkprogress is grotesque understatement.

I never imagined I;d ever be able to make a salient argument using the word “cum-stained”m and I think that’s a pretty savage indictment of the the state of political discourse today. :)

Dick’s in the back court, crosses the mid stripe, dribbling the ball left to right, zigs left, zags right, time running down, twenty six seconds to go, he’s avoiding all the traps the Congress is setting for him, veering back and forth, time running out, and with eight second left he hurls the ball up way up up up and the clock runs out!@!!

If necessary, Dick will create some sort of diversion and stop the elections.

I wish we would all going together and kick Dick’s ass.

This Bull-ish is 5 years, over 4000 deaths, and trillions in debt too late. Sorry ass politicians trying to save face after being scared of a two bit President that held the War, 911, and the Patriot Act over their heads and used fear as a bat to beat the hell out of them. The fact that the word bi-partisan is even in the headline should tell you that this is BS.

Enough already, Mr. Bush has gotten away with whatever he wanted to and will NEVER be held accountable. To bad he didn’t receive oral sex in the White House, then maybe there would have been some outrage.

Yep, funny how only now are we able to get a bi-partisan anything. They will want everyone to be civil and democratic when they suddenly become the minority obstuctionist party once again.

  24. misshusseinmolly says:

“Inappropriate”???? No, “inappropriate” is when you start eating your dinner before everyone at the table has been served. Abuse of executive privilege requires a somewhat stronger label. How about “illegal”?

  25. Marie says:

    No sh!t, Lone Ranger.
A bipartisan report charging Bush with abuse of powers wouldn’t see the light of day if we weren’t this close to an election – one wherein the Repugs are going to lose in many areas.

  26. Leftside Annie says:

My very first thought: NO SHIT!

  27. Marie says:

To reiterate on another post earlier –

The Washington lobbyist John McCain has named to head his presidential transition team aided an influence effort on behalf of Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein to ease international sanctions against his regime.

The two lobbyists who McCain aide William Timmons worked closely with over a five year period on the lobbying campaign later either pleaded guilty to or were convicted of federal criminal charges that they had acted as unregistered agents of Saddam Hussein’s government.

During the same period beginning in 1992, Timmons worked closely with the two lobbyists, Samir Vincent and Tongsun Park, on a previously unreported prospective deal with the Iraqis in which they hoped to be awarded a contract to purchase and resell Iraqi oil. Timmons, Vincent, and Park stood to share at least $45 million if the business deal went through.

Since Cheney claims he is part of the legislative branch, shouldn’t that make it easier for Conyers, Kucinich, et. al. to haul him in front of a committee, subpoena him or cite him with inherent contempt and lock him away in the Capitol basement cell?

  31. LiberalVoter says:

5th Estate, freeman – agreed. And 5th Estate, thanks for reminding us what the Reich wing thinks is important over true high crimes and misdemeanors being perpetrated by the Reich wing. What a sad state of affairs.

You choose the wine, I’ll bring the “Banned by Bill O’Reilly“-brand Brie which we can back for a few minutes in it’s circular wooden box and then spread on the brioche of your choice along with some blackberry compote, followed up by some blogging Cheetos.

Then as we watch a video of Rachel Ray giving a hand-job to a corncob, we can enjoy ourselves with some Caspian Beluga caviar and ice-cold Iranian Etahadieh vodka and toast a new tomorrow.

Oh yeah. I read this early this morning or late last night. Amazing!

Anything these bozos (mcchimpy’s gang) lie about on Sen. Obama should be promptly investigated by the dems.

If Sen. Obama got caught in one of mcchimpy’s scandals he wouldn’t have a chance.

Not only that I read that paulson is associated to all the companies that will get their payoff money. I knew somebody had to balance the scale.

  41. ElBruce says:

Yeah, whatever. And they also found that the Bush administration used the wrong salad fork and drank their tea without extending their pinky. I’m getting sick and tired of these toothless reports. Just impeach the scumbag and have done.

I’d tell you to try the veal but it’s contaminated with Chinese lead and melamine. And don’t forget to tip your waitress–in EUROS!

That ticking sound you’re hearing? It’s not your girlfriend’s biological clock, it’s the the national debt clock! HA!

Seriously though..does anyone have a loaded gun I can borrow?
It’s for my mental health, don;t worry I can write it off as a business expense. Hey, you’ve been great in that you are drunk enough to be easily entertained but not drunk enough to heckle. Thanks again, denizens of whatever comedy club this is!

If only they had started impeachment hearings two years ago, instead of taking it off the table, they would have found this out long ago. Among many other equally abhorrent abuses.

Good job, Congress. I guess. Sort of.

Strange, that the Democrats would let the Nation slip into such despair JUST to win an election…
    … NO?

Funny thing is, Bush thinks that the country slipped into despair because of the Democrats, too.

I mean, it’s not Bush’s fault the Democrats sat back and FAILED to reign this Administration in soon enough at all… is it?

So, maybe Pelosi can enlighten us discontented to just how the Democrats intend to mend the wounds they let happen on their watch? I mean, WHY SHOULD I (speaking for myself) EVER TRUST THE DEMOCRATS… AGAIN?

    .
