Report finds that White House used ‘taxpayer-funded trips to help elect Republican candidates.’

A draft House Oversight Committee report finds that the White House “used the political affairs office to orchestrate an aggressive strategy to use taxpayer-funded trips to help elect Republican candidates for public office.” Under the direction of Sara Taylor, the political affairs office identified struggling GOP candidates and arranged for cabinet members to make appearances on their behalf:

From January 1, 2006, until the mid-term elections on November 7, 2006, cabinet secretaries and other senior officials traveled to over 300 events recommended by the political affairs office. All of these events were held with Republican candidates, and in most cases, the travel costs were paid for with federal funds. … In some instances, the White House specifically requested that travel be billed to the taxpayers to save Republican campaigns money.

During the course of their investigation, the Oversight Committee found Taylor to be “evasive” and “misleading.”

The fact that these efforts to elect Republican candidates were utter failures in no way diminishes their illegality and impropriety.

I’d be far more surprised to hear that the GOP had actually obeyed the law, for once.

Recall that Sara Taylor reported directly to Karl Rove

  9. palinode says:

could we please have some non-pardoned jail-time for these crooks.

  10. Jackie says:

Let’s see what happens with this information. Sara Taylor should be charged with misleading the investigation. There will be more to come with crimes done by the WH. This should help the public know were the money went from the US Treasury as Hank Paulson was handing it out like candy to the GOP.

Kind of off topic, but did anyone read the article yesterday in which McCain said he’d bring up Ayers in tonight’s debate?

What did McCain say in earlier debates, ‘you don’t tell the enemy that you’re going to tell attack them’ or something like that??

Don’t you want the element of surprise in a debate, to catch your opponent off guard and make him stammer and stutter?

    Dear Federal Government:

Enclosed is a bill for $0.13.
This is my calculated share of taxpayer funds misused by your administration.

Please remit in full no later than Friday, October 17th, 2008 or we will be forced to send this to collection.

P.S. The previous communication should be referenced solely in terms of the misuse of funds used by the political affairs office to orchestrate an aggressive strategy to use taxpayer-funded trips to help elect Republican candidates for public office.

The bush whitehouse has raped the taxpayer outright while their corporate friends have killed our economy. But don’t think they are done. Their friends will remain in high places to look over your money being spent in less than frugal ways. When all is done they skate and we loose.

  19. Uncle Ho says:

Imagine the howls of outrage and blood-lust from the reich-wing noise machine if this had been done by the Democrats.

    I rest my case.

    Let’s see…

Until recently, the Republicans had from five to ten times as much money as the Democrats. They also had the districts gerrymandered, the voting machines rigged; the vote suppressed; virtual control over the media; a well-oiled attack machine; legions of uncritical voters; operatives everywhere playing dirty tricks; heavily-funded right-wing think tanks; control over a thoroughly corrupt Justice Department; countless propaganda channels like Fox News and NewsMax; the relentless din of hate radio; and the power of the Federal government–all lined up behind them.

And yet THEY STILL CAN’T WIN!

If Republicans had any idea what world-class, Guinness-Book-of-World-Record-breaking screw-ups they are, they’d all hang themselves immediately.

Only in the United Snakes of America under the Sith Administration: Land of thieves. Sara Taylor needs to be charged with perjury and misleading the Oversight Committee.

  25. tom says:

Of course, this year troubled republican candidates are actually paying GDumbya to keep himself, Darth Vader and the Keystone Kops Kabinet out of their towns.

Unfortunately, the money is going into the GDumbya Defense Fund instead of repaying the government for all its political expenses incurred in 2006.

This is what Repukian Mafia Members do, crime, lots and lots of crime, with lots and lots of lying thrown in for good measure.

  37. impeachcheneythenbush says:

My understanding is that the Hatch Act has an exemption for cabinet members and other federal employees who have been appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate.

Section 7324 of The Hatch Act provides an exemption to the ban on political activities to:

    * (i) an employee paid from an appropriation for the Executive Office of the President; or

    * (ii) an employee appointed by the President, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate, whose position is located within the United States, who determines policies to be pursued by the United States in the nationwide administration of Federal laws.

HOWEVER, while they are allowed to participate in partisan actions, no taxpayer dollars can be spent for political activities. Those should be borne by the candidates or party’s campaign.
