FLASHBACK: McCain Said There Was ‘Great Progress Economically’ Under Bush

As the election nears, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) seems to be making a final push to distance himself from President Bush. In yesterday’s debate, he firmly declared, “I am not President Bush. … I’m going to give a new direction to this economy in this country.” In a new ad out today named “Fight,” McCain directly tells viewers that the economy during the Bush years hasn’t “worked very well”:

The last eight years haven’t worked very well, have they? I’ll make the next four better.

Watch it:

Not long ago, McCain was more optimistic about the Bush economy. In April, McCain said that “you could make an argument that there’s been great progress economically over that period of time.” During a January GOP primary debate, he stated, “I think that you could argue that Americans overall are better off because we have had a pretty good prosperous time. … A lot of good things have happened.” Watch it:

McCain released a similar ad in August that stated, “We’re worse off than we were four years ago.” The public, however, isn’t buying the spin that McCain has different policies than Bush. An LA Times poll released Tuesday found that a majority of Americans believe McCain would continue Bush’s policies, a finding consistent with numerous other surveys.

It’ awfully hard to push back from a guy when you have your arms wrapped around him. Especially when you have votes wrapped around him as well

  3. Above the Clouds says:

Those pesky and troubling 401K statements that came to most American homes last week was a swift and sure kick to the collective American nut-sack delivered by McCain’s GOP. Most folks aren’t going to forget that kick come election day.

No daylight at all between McIIIrd and his Wunderkind. Both incurious, nearly failing students who partied and screwed their brains out, instead of studying and absorbing life’s lessons.

Grampy McGonnaKickTheBucket says – My fellow prisoners I will make things better, better for the war industry, better for the Iraqis, much better for Iranians, yes, they are all going to have a chance to see their god as soon as I steal the el…er win the election, yes, Shara says that we all will have a chance to see God very soon when she is President, don’t ga know, maybe she forgot that she is going to be VP, but anyway, when things are better for the congressional war industry then things are better for all Americans, everyone needs to pitch in, everyone needs to get jobs making things that kill other people, that is what America is all about, bringing freedom at the point of a gun, that is what makes us safe, keeps us free, just as Shara, she is an expert now on that also…I think I just sat on a lobbyist.

Yeah, 4 more years of Bush’s scorched earth polices is going to work out just fine.

  7. stateofthedivision says:

Common sense, like implementing The Carlyle Group’s tax request to the Senate in 2006. McCain fights for the big money boys, not against.

Phil Gramm’s UBS just got a $54 billion injection from the U.S. taxpayer. That’s right John, I’ll whine over that!

  8. katy says:

    ” i have a plan… your savings? we’ll rebuild them…
    your investments? they’ll grow again…”

what the hell kind of “plan” is that?

  9. tom says:

But McNumbNuts has the support of Joe the Plumber. You know. The guy who is a close relative of Charles Keating and is going to make more than $250,000 off that plumbing company he’s going to buy. He only has a couple of problems with his plan:

    1) He has no plumber’s license but he does have a lien for unpaid taxes. So he’s just like Failin’ Palin, a great concept with no substance (McNumbNuts’ campaign needs to vet its hood ornaments more carefully).

    2) He admitted that he’s looking at paying $250,000 to $280,000 for a plumbing company. He’ll be hard-pressed to clear 15 to 20 percent net which means that his taxable income won’t exceed $56,000. Actually, a guy like him probably shouldn’t buy a company when they don’t know the difference between gross revenue and net income.

On the other hand, Joe the Plumber has only been working for the Unstable/Unable ticket for a couple of days and he’s already given more press conferences than Failin’ Palin.

It ain’t a plan. It’s more like Failin’ Palin — a wet dream.

  13. RUCerious says:

Ya spose that S. Joseph PlumberAssCrack was McIIIrd’s ‘October Surprise’ that was supposed to deliver the ‘knockout blow’ to Obama?

Me too. What a dismal failure the repukes are in their failure to vett their candidates, props and shills.

    “““““““““““““““““““““
Most definitely this was suppose to be the big “gotcha” moment strategy employed by McCain during the debate. This was obvious because McCain kept bringing up “Joe The Plumber” to attack Barack Obama when he would talk about his superior tax plan. McCain got very angry when his strategy obviously failed as you could hear him repeatedly take deep breaths and holding them to control the rage burning inside of him.

Oh come on now Unc, McCain and Vampyra Of The North have both clearly stated that Old Johnny meant the workers of America were the fundamentals he was talking about!

Well Johnny…I’m now an unemployed fundamental so what are you going to do about the outsourcing of good paying jobs? I guess I can forget about being re-trained since you will impose a budget freeze.

I’m George Bush, and I approved this message.

    LOL…

Guess who Joe the Plumber is related to? Charles Keating! http://crooksandliars.com/david-neiwert/joe-plumber-more-joe-keating-family-

Oh, and Joe doesn’t have a plumbing license and has a lien on his business for unpaid back taxes. Nice vetting, again.

  22. stateofthedivision says:

Next up for Treasury bailout money? Bond insurance companies.

Those paying attention know whose life McCain will make better, whose investments he’ll get growing again.

  23. Badmoodman says:

RR: It is you uninformed people that are dictating the polls to force Sen. McCain to sway away from President Bush.

    – - Whoa, screwy on so many levels. You mean I can sit here at my computer and intimidate The Maverick and have him do my bidding? Whadda pussy.

  24. stateofthedivision says:

Daryll, alot more than bad mortgages are unwinding. Relative size of markets:

$13 trillion mortgage market in U.S., only a portion of which is bad.

$60 trillion credit derivative market in U.S., Lehman’s failure triggered a domino effect in this sector.

But your tax money is going to bailout the big money boys’ risky bets. At least what goes on in Vegas, stays in Vegas. When Wall Street implodes, the taxpayer saves.

Good grief, that filthy old man McLoser is just full of crap, isn’t he??

  28. tombaker says:

I can’t understand any of this conversation.

    John McCain IS A REPUBLICAN.

Why is anyone letting him pretend for a second that he’s not?

He could’ve been an Independent – he chose not to.

Therefore, the fruits of the current Republican administration are John McCain’s Republican fruits. He chose to own them.

This whole line of campaign/media jibber-jabber needs to be shut down.

  29. regular_joe says:

There was great economic progress under Bush.

    Unfortunately, it was negative progress.

  30. RUCerious says:

    Rupture Darlyy says:
You guys forget that we rape the American taxpayer for the largest tax revenue under President Bush.

The only problem was that we had to use tax payers funds to fight an illegal war in Iraq, which is a great boondoggle for the security of our nation. We also were hurt by the mortgage crisis because idiotic loans and mortgages that were never noticed or addressed by the administration that basically failed on it’s responsibility to monitor and regulate them. Therefore, I believe that Sen. McCain supports President Bush. It is you soon to be in power people that are dictating the polls to force Sen. McCain to sway away from President Bush.

  31. regular_joe says:

RaptureReady seems confused about, well, about everything.

I would ask him to explain a few things:

    1) If revenue was so large, how come the national debt doubled under Bush?

    2) If “fighting terrorism” was the goal, why did we invade a country that did not attack us?

    3) Failure to understand the origins of the credit crisis — not the “mortgage crisis” — seems to be a widespread problem among wingnuts. I wonder if he’s ever heard of a Credit Default Swap? I doubt it, since such knowledge would undermine his wingnut talking point that the entire “mortgage crisis” was caused by a few brown people who defaulted on their mortgages.

    4) If Bush was such a great preznit, why is McSame losing in the polls? All of us “uninformed people” would LOVE to hear an answer to that one.

As I said, I would ask him to explain, but it’s a safe bet that he doesn’t even understand the questions.

RaptureReady’s as clueless as Smirky the Chimp.

  32. stateofthedivision says:

“Pays” would have worked better. I meant “saves” as in “rescues with our money.”

Sorry if I was a Bush like opaque!

  33. judyinnm says:

Could the reason people think McCain will continue Bush’s policie be because his STATED plans are identical to what Bush has done over the past 8 years?

  34. EugeneDebs says:

    RaptureReady Says:

You guys forget that we receive the largest tax revenue under President Bush. The only problem was that we had to use tax payers funds to fight terrorism, which is a great cause for the security of our nation. Ruptured you are the stupidest Limborg hiveminder at this site. The most brainwashed, braindead, sychophantic conformity junkie imaginable you dont even KNOW what you think until Rush tells you what it is. You are a moron. Next time save us all the trouble of reading your abject stupidity and just post BBAAAAAAAAAAAAAA we can fill in todays talking points ourselves. As to the specifics of your ignorance. There are more PEOPLE today than ever paying taxes but tax revenue DROPPED at first. We STOPPED fighting a war on terror to fight a profit friendly war in Iraq. Your delusions about the GOP deregulation mania inspired financial meltdown have been addressed over and over and its too boring to do it again but what was really funny was to see the stupidest, most uninformed, misinformed and brainwashed poster of all time telling US we are uninformed and condescendingly scolding the American people pushing Mcdufus away from Bush whose approval rating is the WORST EVER RECORDED for a president. Your comittement for proudly parading the most ignorant BS I have ever read makes you look too stupid to be believed
