In 2000, McCain ‘assured’ Gary Bauer that he would ‘appoint pro-life judges.’

In the debate last night, moderator Bob Schieffer asked Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) if he could “ever nominate someone to the Supreme Court who disagrees” with him on Roe v. Wade. McCain replied that he had never “imposed a litmus test on any nominee to the court.” “That’s not appropriate to do,” said McCain. Watch it:

But, as Ezra Klein points out, it has been previously reported that McCain assured conservative activist Gary Bauer in 2000 that he “would appoint pro-life judges“:

Somewhat surprisingly, McCain had the support of Gary Bauer, the social conservative, who had dropped out of the race by that time. “I wanted a commitment from either George Bush or John McCain that if elected he would appoint pro-life judges to the Supreme Court,” Bauer told me. “Bush said he had no litmus test, and his judges would be strict constructionists. But McCain, in private, assured me he would appoint pro-life judges.”

Klein writes that if Bauer’s claim is true, “it seems to me like a fairly big deal that McCain is publicly forswearing litmus tests but privately assuring leaders of the Christian Right that he’ll have them.”

    What a bunch of loons

Every show we’ve done (in case ya missed it, I play piano in a jazz band, click my name to hear it) we’ve yelled out to the crowd to support Obama and we’ve always gotten overwhelmingly positive responses, usually insane enthusiasm even.

    And this is in Atlanta!

  6. helenahandbasket says:

Did McCain’s lips move? Oh, yeah, they did :)

    “A fairly big deal”?

C’mon Ezra. Don’t be so naive. It’s only a “fairly big deal” to those who expect Republicans to tell the truth,

  8. Marie says:

McCranky can’t remember what he said yesterday. But women will. The condescending manner in which he referred to women’s health (in air quotes) will surely resonate with independent women. McCain will surely select pro-life justices for the SCOTUS and women should feel a chill at that prospect.
When McCain sold his soul to the religious zealots in order to gain their support, which was previously refused, that was a major part of the bargain.
It’s very sad that in the 21st century women still have to be on guard against losing their individual rights – and with McCain in the White House, their losses will begin.

  9. LibertyLover says:

This is NOT surprising at all. At this point, McCain will say anything to anybody to get their vote…

  10. lurker says:

I don’t understand why the wingnuts are against abortion.
Only a godless liberal living off the governmemt would
get one. So you think they wouldn’t want them to reproduce
and have to pay for them after they are born. /Snark

  11. AngryOne says:

For the past two weeks, the McCain campaign and its allies have been waging an aggressive smear campaign designed to portray Barack Obama as out of the mainstream on the issue of abortion. But with his dripping condescension about the “health of the mother” in Wednesday’s final presidential debate, John McCain turned the tables on himself. His adolescent “air quotes” not only confirmed his caustic disregard for the health and rights of American women. With his scorn, McCain also reminded voters about his extremist Republican Party platform that would ban abortions even in the cases of rape and incest.

    For the details, see:
“McCain Attack Boomerangs, Shows GOP Extremism on Abortion.”

  12. jurassicpork says:

    You Forgot Iraq.

But that’s OK. So did Bob Schieffer last night and, apparently, both candidates and approximately 300,000,000 Americans, give or take 147,000 families.

  13. Tim Vaculik says:

    Hahahahaha,

You folks really are a hoot! Your hero has done EXACTLY the same thing you accuse Senator McCain of doing with respect to a “litmus test” for nominating judges to the Supreme Court!

What we do know definitively is that Obama is the most pro-abortion candidate to EVER run for the highest office in the land. He’s so far out of the mainstream he makes other progressives look like pro-lifers!!!

GMAFB. All you have to do is LOOK at Obama’s record and you will see that he has no problem at all with infanticide. What a morally corrupt, despicable human being he truly is!

  14. Bob says:

There’s really no telling what McCain would do and I’m surprised that that voting block would trust any r after being used as they have. The only way to assure overturning RvW is to appoint judges that specifically agree on that issue in that way. The only way to do that is to apply some sort of pH test to determine acidity.

Does appointing ‘pro-life’ judges mean they’ll ban the death penalty?

It is interesting that Obama’s expertise in Constitutional law came up last night. That was a good response to say that privacy is every bit as important as all the other rights.

  19. Tim Vaculik says:

“Health of the Mother” is the biggest Red Herring argument of them all!

You would have to use the most tortured logic imaginable to justify partial-birth abortion based upon a mother’s “health.” The truth is that women who seek these type of abortions aren’t doing it for health reasons.

If Barack Obama is elected, he will seek the passage of the most sweeping, unconstitutional pro-abortion bill EVER conceived. The bill as it is written will outlaw ANY restrictions on abortions and taxpayers to fund abortions against their deeply held moral and religious beliefs.

    COMMUNISM at it’s best.

  20. Tim Vaculik says:

    Here’s a question for “constitutional scholars”…

    What in God’s name is a “pre-viable fetus” ???

  21. lurker says:

Why are the supposed “pro-lifers” so “pro-war” and “pro-death penalty”? The same ones that would shout out “kill him”

You are so full of shit, your eyes are brown and leaking. Please link to this sweeping pro-abortion bill “as it is written.” You can’t.

Also, I sincerely hope there are no women in your life. Obviously you don’t give a shit about women’s health.

  23. jb says:

These right wing wackos think the have a right to shove their delusions down our throats, especially women. Forcing a woman to carry a pregnancy to full term when her health is endangered is worse than castrating Christian bigots. Why do these people think they can step between a woman and her Doctor and tell them both what to do, consequences be damned.

  26. Tim Vaculik says:

Here’s another: Abortion itself is unconstitutional. Who among you can answer why this is true?

  27. Tim Vaculik says:

Maybe I’m assuming a little too much here…

Perhaps you people would have preferred to have been ABORTED, rather than be brought into a world that is so terrible!

Too bad some of you weren’t.

  28. tom says:

Also, I sincerely hope there are no women in your life.

Zooey, the only woman in this wastrel’s life is his Mommy. She lets him live in her basement, bleaches the skidmarks out of his tidy whiteys and tries not to walk in on him when he’s “dating his left hand” (if you know what I mean).

  29. jb says:

If people are actually interested in preventing abortion, as opposed grandstanding their holier-than-thou attitude, they would throw their full support to open and comprehensive sex education and making contraception available for any and all.

  30. pete says:

So that explains the recent absence of trolls. They got nuthin and they know it.

  31. Tim Vaculik says:

Truth is, I am married and have a grown daughter who is not yet married.

For the very reason I DO CARE about her, I would never suggest to her she have an abortion for the typical reasons most women choose.

You see, unlike Obama and his ilk, I do not believe that bringing an “unplanned for” child into the world is equivalent to a punative burden to be imposed.

Those who choose life over death are using morally and ethically sound reasoning, instead of a rationalized “me first” approach, which is so prevalent these days.

  32. jb says:

My Grandmother did abortions back in the 1950’s. All the doctors in town were afraid to perform them so they sent women to my Grandmother because she knew how to do the procedure safely and properly. Looks like I can start the family business back up if the wingnuts get their way. I however don’t have the necessary skills and background, but there will be plenty of demand.

  33. Tim Vaculik says:

    jb,

No, I disagree. Part of the problem IS “sex education” although it isn’t the primary driver.

You have to look at society as a whole and what has happened since the sexual revolution, since around the 60’s.

No amount of sex education or free contraceptives are going to stop young people who are determined to engage in sexual activity… The real question is WHY are they doing it and why do they ignore sound advice about preventing pregnancy.

  34. jb says:

Tim, I doubt you will have an abortion. So why not worry about something you have a right to control.

  35. pete says:

So, stupid troll, have you taught your alleged daughter that it’s acceptable to tell ridiculous lies to advance a political position?

  36. jb says:

Biology 101. Or do you also oppose science?

  37. lurker says:

So Tim tell us your constitutional argument that is so good
that it hasn’t been used yet? Of course I don’t you to answer
    the question.
You are a christian no doubt, but the bible is hardly “pro-life”.
    Psalm 137:9
Happy shall he be, that taketh and dasheth thy little ones against the stones.Isaiah 13:18
Their bows also shall dash the young men to pieces; and they shall have no pity on the fruit of the womb; their eyes shall not spare children.

  38. tombaker says:

Pitching a hissy fit is always the best remedy, right Tim?

Why work on solutions when you can freak out on incoherent dogmatism?

  39. Tim Vaculik says:

    jb,

I do have the right. I have a moral obligation to stand up for what is right and to stand up for those who can’t defend themselves.

Here’s something to think about. Are the unborn simply parasites inside a host or are they each a life separate and distinct from the person who’s body is sustaining them until they can make it on their own?

    Can anyone answer that question?

  40. pete says:

I’m afraid that you have to examine the world outside the U.S. to see what happens when a society puts aside their primitive myths regarding life, the universe, and everything. But here’s a little factoid. The Holy States of America is close to the lead, among all western nations, when it comes to abortion and teen pregnancy. We are also among the last to banish primitive superstition from political discourse. We suffer, as a nation, because a bunch of idiots can’t function without reliance on a mythical shy-daddy whom they seek to force on the “Unbelievers”.

  41. jb says:

Perhaps a vasectomy is in order Mr. Tim the parasite.

  42. tombaker says:

there are plenty of kids already on earth that need your help a lot more tim. get your priorities in order before you start carping.

  43. tom says:

The real question is WHY are they doing it and why do they ignore sound advice about preventing pregnancy.

In the case of Timmy’s daughter, she will probably do it to:

    1) escape the dysfunctional family she lives with now and

    2) trick a man into marrying her ugly ass the same way that her mother did

  47. BrianFL says:

As usual, McCain gave the cowardly answer last night on the Supreme Court question. He chose to mislead people into thinking he has no litmus test when he obviously will. He had an abortion litmus test even on his own running mate.

Obama gave the honest answer and told you exactly the type of judge he would nominate.

  48. jb says:

Just think how many innocent women and children would have been spared a horrible death from falling bombs if the admiral’s wife would have had an abortion all those many many years ago.

  49. pete says:

They sure don’t make trolls like they used to. I was hoping for an explanation of why we should believe anything Flippy McSpin says about SCOTUS judges when he has clearly lied about his criteria for the position. For all we know he will insist that they promote rape, or theft, or murder, or even abortion. After all, he has adopted two contradictory positions on this issue alone. Then there are the dozens of other lies he’s told for personal and political gain.

All of which leads me to ask: Who is Flippy McSpin?

  50. ralph the wonder llama says:

If you want a career in pious scolding I suggest you get a job as a schoolmarm. YOUR take on the issue just isnt the last word. Get over it.

  60. EugeneDebs says:

    Tim Vaculik Says:

    Can anyone answer that question?
    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

No one can answer that question including YOU. No one knows when after conception it becomes a seperate life. We dont even know what life is. We dont even know why things are alive on the cellular level but not on the molecular level. You can PRETEND that you know a seperate life begins at conception but sometimes a baby is not the product but YES a parasite check out Molar pregnancies. Pious indignation is NOT a rational argument and PRETENDING that you know things that CANNOT be substantiated that is facts NOT in evidence is a weak emotional argument and not one that will convince anyone that doesnt WANT to be convinced.

  61. Who Lied Today? says:

McCain essentially said the same thing last night, but I don’t think any of the post game mentioned it (or maybe I’m misinterpreting) His quote:

Schieffer: But even if it was someone — even someone who had a history of being for abortion rights, you would consider them?

McCain: I would consider anyone in their qualifications. I do not believe that someone who has supported Roe v. Wade that would be part of those qualifications. But I certainly would not impose any litmus test.

  62. Zooey says:

The troll’s daughter will be coming home pregnant any day now, and will likely have an STD.

Parents like that live in a dream world that denies the sexuality of their children.

    Amazing.

  63. green says:

I found it interesting last night in the debate that McBush called those of us who are prochoice, “pro-abortion.” I have never met anyone in my life who is proabortion. It’s a buzz word and it gets some of these cretins really freaked out. It is about the right for women to choose what is best for all involved – a heart wrenching decision either way.

Let’s call it what it is – prochoice (we believe people are capable of making the private decisions that impact them) or anti-choice (people must be told what to do and do not know what is best for themselves and those involved).

    Just sayin’…

  64. green says:

And I liked when Obama mentioned helping women and children so that the need to make these difficult choices would become less and less. Again, just my two cents.

  65. ebbAndflow says:

Tim V: until you acquire the reproductive anatomy to carry a child to term or take a refresher course in A&P (anatomy and physiology) please refrain from soiling this thread with your nonsense.

  66. impeachcheneythenbush says:

At last night’s debate, McCain said he would never impose a litmus test on a Supreme Court nominee…just look at their qualifications. But 30 seconds later, he stated that he wouldn’t consider someone who supports Roe vs. Wade as meeting those qualifications. (Sorry if this has already been pointed out…no time to read comments above).

  67. Marie says:

    #62 WLT
I think McCain contradicted himself in the same comment.
He would not impose a litmus test, but he doesn’t think anyone with the qualifications he would seek would disagree with his personal opinion.

  68. alliebabe says:

Grampy McSame also boldly stated in the debate that Obama voted against Justice Roberts and Breyer! Breyer had been a SC Justice ten years before Obama came into the Senate. No one called McCain on his “confusion.”
