McCain aides privately call Palin a ‘total disaster.’

On Salon Radio this morning, Glenn Greenwald asked Harper’s Scott Horton about his recent reporting on how Weekly Standard Editor Bill Kristol lobbied the McCain campaign to select Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) as the Republican vice presidential nominee. Horton explained that the McCain campaign is now regretting following Kristol’s advice, calling the Palin pick a “total disaster“:

palin2341.jpgHORTON: We’ve got a lot of finger-pointing going on within the camp, and I’d say there’s a pretty broad agreement amongst a number of the senior-most advisors to McCain that the Palin pick is worse than disappointing. It’s a total disaster, as one describes to me. And there is a sort of blame game going on there. [...]

I would say the anger and irritation between a number of the senior people in the McCain camp and Bill Kristol is become really acute. … They view this man as the guy who gave them this albatross, Sarah Palin. I think there’s a lot of real anger about it. There’s also recognition that it’s too late to do anything.

Horton said neoconservatives are “now just proceeding to develop Palin as their candidate, as somebody they want to bring up in 2012, as the neo-con favored Republican.” Last month, a former Republican White House official, who now works at the American Enterprise Institute, said, “She’s bright and she’s a blank page. She’s going places and it’s worth going there with her.”

    She’s a blank page alright.

  2. stewarjt says:

So let me get this straight. The McBane campaign chooses Palin and they blame Kristol? I have no respect for Kristol, but Republicans claim to be the party of “personal responsibility” and here these guys are sloughing off the pick on Kristol. Suck it up and take responsibility for your disastrous pick! Geez! You were fools for listening to Kristol!

OOO… more crap for Kristol to get thrown under the bus for. Man, they’ll look for anything and any reason to keep the sh*t off themselves, won’t they?

  5. spearNmagicHelmet says:

here’s my attempt at reaching across the aisle.

republicans; stop picking stupid people. you’ll go alot farther with exceptional people with exceptional intellect. for an example, please see the man currently putting a boot in your ass.

a former Republican White House official, who now works at the American Enterprise Institute, said, “She’s bright and she’s a blank page. She’s going places and it’s worth going there with her.”

Blank page? They’ve got that right, at least.

Bright? So is the Sun, but looking at it will blind you.

Going places? Right. Right back to Alaska, hopefully.

RNC, if this is the best you have, you ain’t got much.

So ‘lil billy kkkristol is getting credit for this pick? The same guy who declared this campaign a disaster? Sounds like ‘lil billy to me. His lack of intelligence and propensity for bad predictions is stellar, and diminished only by Palin herself.

If this is the best the Republicans have for 2012, Democrats may well have a super majority for the next 8 years.

    Sweet!

  7. JYD says:

It is sad to think that the neo-cons are excited about another blank page…look at the damage done by the current blank page in the White House.

  8. MapleStreet says:

She is a “blank slate….” So does that mean they have already accomplished phase 1 of brainwashing and now just have to implant her with new memories ?

And, of course, how could the premier expert on energy policy and foreign policy be simultaneously a blank slate ?

  9. raynman says:

This is a good sign. The neo-cons will be so busy pointing fingers and assigning blame after McCain loses that they won’t have time to start assembling the Blame Obama machinery until at least week 2 of the term….

  10. rogerD says:

They forget that nobody put a gun to St John’s head when he chose Palin.

  11. Analogous says:

So does Huckabee think for himself too much to qualify as the neo-cons’ next savior?

  12. RUCerious says:

THEY LISTENED TO BILLY KRYPTONITE KRYSTOL!
On something as important as the Veep pick!???

They get what they deserve. A disaster. Heh.

  13. Badmoodman says:

It’s a total disaster, as one describes to me. And there is a sort of blame game going on there.

    - – Well, like I said in an earlier post, the neocons are pointing Palin at 2012. But the VP pick is a president’s first executive decision. The buck starts and stops with McCain on this choice.

  14. NOLIESPLEASE says:

You mean all that talk of her being qualified was bull….go figure. Thats it…I’m voting for Obama.

  15. johnfyounger says:

now that is a juicy rumor. i wondered what Bill Kristol’s recent outburst was about. It seemed strangely personal.

  16. had enough says:

And this woman, according to McCain last night, is a good role model for all women.

  17. VerbalKint says:

OT, but check out this story:

    http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/Vote2008/story?id=6047360&page=1

“Wurzelbacher conceded today that he is not in danger of being hit with the higher tax rate. He acknowledged that he wants to buy a plumbing company for $250,000 to $280,000. That wouldn’t be how much profit he would make from the firm.”

So the plumber-without-a-license wasn’t ever going to earn $250K, he wants to buy a company for that much money. Even assuming a 20% rate of return, he would only earn $50K. What a joke!

  18. pete592 says:

Every time I’ve read or heard a righty praising Palin and her qualifications, it sounds more like they’re trying to convince themselves. McCain’s praise of her last night is no exception.

  19. scytherius says:

This was Bill Kristol’s doing? They took his advice? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

    What a maroon!!!

  20. christopher wiwi says:

Just add this to the list of reasons why McPalin should not be elected as President!!!!!!!!and the list goes on on with his cabinet,no way Old man.

  21. the Lone Voice of Reason says:

The Snowbilly (thanks Zimzone) is tanking the campaign? I thought they had vetted her, so why are they mad at him for picking this FABULOUS running mate? After all, she’s got B**bs just like Hillary, right? I thought that was all that they thought women cared about.

  22. Badmoodman says:

    “She’s bright and she’s a blank page.”

    – - Don’t forget, pathological liar.

  23. RUCerious says:

  26. RantingTommy says:

Palin is blank. That is for sure.

It’s an insult to women everywhere that he thinks she is a role model. I would call her a SPOKESmodel. She’d probably sell a lot of cars.

No way should she be president.

  29. gummitch says:

If the Republicans don’t run her in 2012 she can always run on the AIP ticket instead. She can promise not just to cut taxes but to cut states.

And I suppose that list of cabinet appointments that Kristol provided has been crumpled and tossed now as well.

Come on Repubs, some accountability please. This is what happens when you don’t vett your candidate and pander to a fringe group.

  33. kasinca says:

McSame is taking advise from the same guy who gave us the neo-conservative PNAC and who has not ever been right about anything? Chalk this up as another piece of wrong information from bloody Billy Kristol

  35. kist93 says:

I wonder if Sarah Palin remembers Katherine Harris?

  36. paleolib says:

Please please PLEASE let AEI and the rest of the neocons spend the next four years polishing this deep freeze twinkie for a run down the rabbit hole. I can’t wait to see the fratricidal 2112 Republican debates featuring Mittens Romney as the pro-millionaire candidate vying with Palin as the born again neocon and whatever other mossbacks this dying party can assemble. Much better for them to try to salvage this ethically-challenged dimwit than to polish up someone who doesn’t already have a full digital library proving their incompetence posted on You Tube.

  37. flex says:

Great! I can’t wait till 2012, Palin will be more of a disaster then. Lies and corruption are all the neo-cons have left anyway…

  38. 37 brothers says:

  41. texaslady says:

I cannot believe Palin was the best Republican female they could come up with ! Maybe she was the only one that wanted the job. I wait and wait to hear one concrete, honest statement from her. She asks who is Obama, well I ask who is Palin ? The Repubs have insulted every intelligent female choosing her to represent a female in the White House.

Where is her “Executive” skills in accepting, one should realize when they are not qualified for the position.

  42. tombaker says:

“She’s bright and she’s a blank page. She’s going places and it’s worth going there with her.”

If by bright and blank you mean “certified damaged goods”. That’s all that woman will ever be. (unless there is a kkk renaissance in the next couple years)

Somebody please get the poor stupid righty voters in red states some money, so they’ll shut up and wander off the national political landscape. Put’em to work, pay’em well, and they’ll spend their time bass fishing and scrapbooking instead of listening to am radio demagogues and driving the country off track with their dumb voting preferences.

  43. Oval12345678 aka James K. Sayre says:

The wicked witch of Wasilla a disaster? Oh, come on, she could hardly be much more of a disaster than the ancient lying, war criminal McBlinker himself…

  44. mmanion says:

I wonder if they’ll appoint Cheney to her VP selection committee and then he will find himself to be the most qualified and we can start the puppet master routine all over again. I think Palin is more dangerous than Bush. Bush seemed willing to be pushed around a bit. Palin is pathologically narcissistic and believes herself to be entitled to do pretty much whatever she wants. She already, supposedly, is blaming McCain for ruining her chances at national office. There’s gratitude for you.

  45. GL2814 says:

What is it with the GOP and their choice of village idiots?

That’s right! Lobbyists run McCain’s campaign, but McCain doesn’t associate with lobbyists, so McCain never knows what is going on in the McCain campaign.

  47. texaslady says:

Even, even staunch republican friends are scared to think of Palin taking over the Presidency when Mccain keels over. Or worse goes into senility. How much stress can a 72 year old man after two years of constant campaigning take ? Of course maybe the people behind the scenes are hoping for that so they can pull the strings.
Palin is worse than incompetent because she thinks she knows everything and takes no direction.

  48. dbadass says:

Won’t someone anyone please show up here to defend this woman? Come on gang you oddballs thought she was the shits just a few weeks back. She’s spunky. She has chutzpah. Remember? Come on. Tell me what a breast of fresh air she is…

  49. Zooey says:

    db,

  50. regular_joe says:

Perhaps if the McSame campaign had vetted Palin? Nah!

  51. IceNine says:

If true, I think its terrific news that Palin is being groomed by the neo-cons to be their standard-bearer the next time. You think Hillary’s negatives were bad? You only get one chance to make a first impression. Palin made a terrific first impression with the wing-nuttery, but the rest of the country has made up their mind, too. A toxic one-trick pony. I hope they ride her right off the cliff in 2012.

  52. MrSquirrel says:

Hah. Palin in 2012. Forget it, neocons.

I think you neocons have finally pissed off whatever is left of the actual true Republicans. And are you the only folks on the planet that can’t see what a total disaster she is, politically?

She did a great service to us all, in a way. She was so blatantly unfit, so abysmally unprepared, that despite her political skills, it has woke up a lot of formerly complacent voters, and opened their eyes to the cynical fact that all that matters to you neocons is allegiance to your agenda, and not quality or qualifications.

No Republican who sincerely cares two whits about their party anymore, is going to let Ms. Palin anywhere near a national elected office. She is poisoned forever as unelectable.

  53. dae says:

Palin is an out and out Fascist.

  54. ElBruce says:

This is pure nonsense. Kristol is always right about everything, Palin’s doing great, and the McCain campaign should continue to take his advice because he’s so gosh-darned brilliant.

As a matter of fact, his recent advice to fire the entire campaign and go it alone – or even better, appoint Kristol as your new manager! – is just such a wild and crazy hail-Mary game-changer, that it’s sure to coast McCain into the White House with ease. Trust me. (imagine frozen Kristol grin here)

  55. green says:

I believe that no one – not anyone even somewhat qualified for the GOOP ticket would have accepted the ticket with McBush – it is a losing game and losing tickets don’t go well the next go around. Failin McPalin is toast and everyone knows it but herself. The debate last night with Obama and McBush answering about the qualifications of their VP choices were quite obvious about the faith that each candidate had about their choices. McBush lost; Obama won (on that question alone).

  56. kpaul says:

The amazing part of this is that the GOP is still laboring under the delusion that Kristol has even the foggiest notion of what he’s talking about. This guy has been spectacularly wrong on just about every major issue of the last eight years. The New York Times has been forced to issue multiple corrections due to his cluelessness, and yet the GOP, for some mystifying reason, still values his idiotic opinions.

William Kristol is part of a class of people, who no matter how badly they perform, they still don’t fail. If most folks did their jobs in this fashion, even if you work at McDonalds, they would be fired.
