Santorum: Obama Is ‘Condescending’ Because He Refuses To Wear An American Flag Pin

Today in an interview with Fox News, former Republican senator from Pennsylvania Rick Santorum sharply criticized Rep. John Murtha’s (D-PA) comments that western Pennsylvania is a “racist area.” Santorum claimed that the real reason people in that area won’t support Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) is because he is “condescending to them.” As evidence, he said that Obama “won’t wear the American flag pin”:

SANTORUM: Well, I’m from western Pennsylvania. I grew up in western Pennsylvania. I grew up in a steel town — Butler, PA — and those people are not racist. What they are are people that look at someone who is as liberal as Barack Obama, who has been condescending to them — in calling them clinging their guns and their religion — won’t wear the American flag pin, and he is not in concert with their values. It has nothing to do with the color of his skin.

Watch it:

It’s not clear how not wearing a flag pin makes someone condescending. Regardless, Obama does wear a flag pin. He has, in fact, worn one at each of the three presidential debates. The person who refuses to wear one is Sen. John McCain (R-AZ):

Note that Santorum was not wearing a flag pin during this interview.

SANTORUM – Where’s your flag pin?

    A$$HOLE.

Oh, there you go again — trying to apply the standards of he Reality-Based Community to a wingnut.

    It’s a losing proposition.

It takes a Republican to criticize someone for not wearing a flag pin while himself not wearing a flag pin but then Ricky rides the short bus even by Republican standards.

  7. jpmdevildog says:

Obama’s got nothing to worry about, now that he’s secured the mutant vote:

Barack Obama has received the political endorsement of America’s favorite precocious mutant: Bat Boy.

“This boy is a shining example of the American dream,” Obama said at a small press conference held after the meeting.

“Coming from meager beginnings, cast out for who he is, he now enjoys the freedom and limitless possibility granted to every American.”

  8. zuch says:

Somebody that has a hard time distinguishing a dog from a man probably will find it exceedingly difficult telling the difference between McSame and Obama … so do forgive Sanitorium his confusion here.

    Cheers,

  9. mk3872 says:

OMG, they’re rolling out Santorum again? Good grief. He’s so outdated that he probably did not even watch the debates to see that it was McCain, not Obama who was NOT wearing a flag pin! LOL! I guess that means his pals in Pittsburgh won’t be voting for McCain, right? This is too funny …

  10. FEARandSMEAR.com says:

It is HILARIOUS how devoid of any new material these wingnuts are…

    Good lord… Santorum?

    Flag pin patriotism?

    What’s next, guys? Monica Lewinsky?

    Sheesh.

  11. DieNowForPeace says:

Hmm, Western Pennsylvania, where Pittsburgh is located, not racist??? A very, very segregated city due to economics and geography.

I’ve been there many times and beg to differ with prissy-pants-Satorum.

  12. singe_101 says:

  15. Zooey says:

Santorum doesn’t know the meaning of the word “condescending.”

BTW, where’s Ricky’s flag pin? He must be condescending…

  16. Leftside Annie says:

    Hey, Little Ricky – STFU!!!

  17. barracks9 says:

Reall? That’s the best he could come up with? Didn’t he have time to touch on the others: arugula, Pahk-istan, “bitter”, “clinging to guns and religion”?

    Seriously?

    So, hard work/self-determination = elitist/condescending

    AND

    Legacy/adulterer/songbird = Maverick

    Am I getting this right?

It’s really sad when the only card left in the RNC deck is “I’m rubber and you’re glue.”

  18. the Lone Voice of Reason says:

Did this guy even pay attention to the debates? If so why isn’t he using the same standards for Blinky who was NOT wearing a flag pin for all three.

What a dumba$s–doesn’t deserve the ink or the keyboard

  19. spencers mom says:

This is the same Santorum who cheated the good folks of Western Pennsylvania out of over $55,000. Yes, he sapped money out of the public school system so his wife-the-breeder could “cyber school” the Ricklettes in their real home in Virginia. The Family Santorum maintained ownership of any empty 3-bedroom house in PA so PRick could claim both a PA residency and tap the educational funds designated for residents.

Love the ‘pubs who go on air to raise the flag pin question without wearing one themselves. Hypocrits.

    PEACE

barracks9 Says: It’s really sad when the only card left in the RNC deck is “I’m rubber and you’re glue.”

Next it will be Obama is a poopie head with cooties.

  21. galmud says:

The flag pin rule doesnt apply to Republicans. If you’re a Democrat you have to prove your love for your country. Like wearing a flag pin at all times, drive around in a tank, dont have a funny foreign name, be white etc etc

  22. RantingTommy says:

Isn’t Santorum the stuff that floats to the top of the hot tub at Larry Craig’s house?

Jazz Musicians for Obama: (me on piano)
    Have a listen
(yes, yet another blatant plug, just trying to get heard)

  23. IgnoranceIsNotBliss says:

WOW, they must be desparate if they’re rolling out Santorum.

  24. Fan of Man says:

gee, murtha must not have been talking to santorum.

    got racism?

  25. dasm says:

And what do Repubs have to say about McCain – who did NOT wear flag pins during debates? Is McCain anti-American? an unpatriot? A hater of the U.S.? A “terrorist”? Why does McCain hate the U.S. so much he refuses to wear a flag pin? (the Repubs own comments). Republicans must be the most obvious hypocrites in the entire world.

  26. Above the Clouds says:

Flag pins? I lost 21% of my 401k last week, so let’s talk about flag pins, former Congressman Santorum.

  27. dasm says:

Santorum & McCain = non-flag-pin-wearing haters of the U.S. They must be terrorists & America-destroyers. (to use their own stupid logic)

  28. margerine says:

When you spend all your time in a sewer, it’s easy to miss highly publicized debates I suppose.

  29. dbadass says:

I am not sure which annoys me more. Flag pins or all those dopey Buckeye chatchkis covering every square inch of counter space in Ohio

  30. techsong says:

These republicans are so ridiculously pathetic. The lies never end.

  31. lurker says:

If you look at the picture of Scarah Impalin in the lower post she has a huge “ALASKA” pin.

  32. misshusseinmolly says:

Santorum would have done better just to say that the people (oops, pardon me — “folks”) in western Pennsylvania disagree with Obama on the issues and tend to vote for those with more conservative positions. And for all I know, that could be true, unless it’s shown that western Pennsylvania voted for Gore and Kerry in huge numbers.

Santorum is correct in his claim that there are other reasons to vote for or against someone besides race, and not all white people who vote for a white candidate over a black one do so for racist reasons.

But he would have been wise to have left the flag pin issue alone. Continuing to comment on Obama’s lack of a flag pin when he wears one and McCain doesn’t just makes him look like a fool.

  33. RantingTommy says:

Can we stick a flag pin to Santorum’s forehead?

  34. RantingTommy says:

O, btw, i figured out how to put a link to my band’s web site in my profile, so now you can just click my name to hear the smooth jazz.

I promise, that’s the last plug. Jazz players need love too, ya know!

  35. jimi13 says:

So, a guy who WEARS a flag pin is criticized by a man NOT WEARING a flag pin, for NOT WEARING a flag pin; and this second man supports another man who was NOT WEARING a flag pin, but says he WEARS a flag pin?

I’m now so hopelessly confused that I must have conjugal relations with my dog, just to get my head straight…

  36. thomthum says:

It’s that whole “bad guy throws the empty gun at Superman” schtick again…they’re seriously out of ammo.

  37. vinylspear says:

Google Santorum and read the first response.
    That says it all.

  38. shoeless says:

    Buckie Boy Says:

He doesn’t have to wear one. If you are a Republican the flag pin is implied.

    Where’s your senate seat, loser?

  40. sbobker says:

Baby Ricky was always a loser. Scammed his small town in PA on school fees they couldn’t afford to pay while he was still a senator. Once a jerk, always a jerk.

  41. jimi13 says:

And isn’t saying Obama is “condescending” really close to describing him as “uppity”? Are we working on the code words now?

  48. Hardy Haberman says:

Isn’t Rick Santorum so 30 minutes ago? Good Lord will this guy never go away. He obviously just spews whatever comes into his mind, like the man on dog sex thing he was so fond of referring to. It’s time we ignored him, and high time the press did, too.

Santorum is one of the most stupid people around. He began as a lawyer at the law firm at which I am currently, and, well, there is a reason he went into politics. Couldn’t hack it at a big law firm because he is stupid.

  52. 5th Estate says:

katy….CNN has an “I-report”, just photos, one vet got clobbered over the head, The photog who posted didn’t note what the ‘protest’ was about and it was hard to judge from the photos.

There was a bunch of crap in the comments with the pics, typical exchanges about who is the biggest fascist etc, couldn;t make ANY sense of it all.
Thanks to this I now see it was the IAVA guys, and it was the police who charged them with horses ( there’s a still photo of that). I;ve experienced such a thing myself in Tompkins Square, Manhattan back in the 80’s–that became a big deal.

These same was done to a tiny anti-war group in Washington last summer.

  53. 5th Estate says:

lurker see #53… IAVA and cops

BTW If you are using Mozilla and the vid doesn;t work switch to IE ( if you have it) Mozilla often craps out on videos for no reason-v annoying.

  54. Marie says:

    Santorum is so yesterday!

  55. lurker says:

    Thanks 5th Estate I use IE, but I have a dial-up.

  56. impeachcheneythenbush says:

There’s some wierd stories out there about Santorium, but the strangest, most macabre one is when the Santoriums brought their baby, who died only a couple of hours after birth, home from the hospital, introduced the dead child to their other children as “your brother Gabriel” and slept with the body overnight before returning it to the hospital. The children (three of them at that time) were 5, 3 and 1 year old at the time.

  57. 5th Estate says:

lurker… ah dialup, yeah not video friendly.

  58. Evil Spaniard says:

This is ridiculous. Nowhere, I mean NOWHERE in the world, can you find such an overabundance of flags and related patriotic simbols as in the USA. And frankly, it reaches a level when it means nothing, and the flag losses its symbolism and becomes only the chip in the shoulder of a bully, the Republicans in this case.

  59. Uncle Fester Lurks says:

Sanitarium cannot be serious!?! He’s chiding Barack while he himself isn’t wearing a flag lapel pin while Barack has and McAint hasn’t at any debate. This is an obvious ploy to piss us all off as nobody can be that stupid…can they?

  60. pbg says:

“Obama doesn’t wear a flag pin!”
“Uh, Rick, look at the video…”
“What? It makes my point exactly!”
“Rick, what are you talking about?”
“It’s plain as day! See! Not wearing a flag pin!”
    *pause*
“Rick, which of these men is Barack Obama?”
“The guy without the flag pin! Duh!”
“The, uh, guy with the thing on his jaw?”
“Sure! Arrogant, condescending guy if I ever saw one!”
“So you like the thin guy with the tan? That John McCain guy?”
“Great speaker, isn’t he? Cool as a cucumber. Just what you’d expect in a war hero.”
“Rick Santorum, thank you. Hope your candidate wins.”
    “Thank you. Always a pleasure.”

  61. wwew says:

i went to penn state and met several western pennsylvanians there. not all are racist of course, but id say more than half that i met are and in varying degrees, from just being ignorant to actively hating minorities.

  62. margerine says:

What’s the deal with these pins anyway? Were they handed out at some special place? Do they have to make a point to go and buy one just to appease these weird newscasters?

They make it seem like it’s as important as a police badge.

  63. pete says:

We are seeing the madness of the neocons exposed as, one by one, they collapse under the realization that their run is over. Their platform has failed, in spectacular fashion, and our nation is waking up to the fact that the “strengths” of the GOP are, in fact, lies.

While there is still a disturbing number of people who will buy their crap, ANYONE who has made an honest effort to weigh the relative merits of the two Presidential tickets is left with one logical conclusion: Flippy McSpin and the GOP are fatally flawed, morally bankrupt, and unfit to lead.

  64. Doc Rock says:

    Santorum is a condescending yerchov!

Oh yuk! I finally got him out of my head, and now he’s there again. That story of he and Mrs. Dog on Man bringing their miscarried fetus home for the children and family to honor with a private family gathering. At the time, bloggers were speculating if the fetus was kept in a jar on the bookshelf in his office. Oh help, my head is exploding again. You can’t ever mention that person again!
