Bachmann Calls For McCarthyite Investigation Into Anti-American Activities Of Liberals

Appearing on MSNBC’s Hardball today, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) attacked the patriotism of Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL), based on his alleged relationship to former Weather Underground member William Ayers and the values of Obama’s former pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright. “I’m very concerned that he may have anti-American views,” said Bachmann. “That’s what the American people are concerned about.”

She then went further, suggesting that all liberal views — held by people such as Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, professors, and all Americans who identify themselves as “liberals” — are “anti-American.” When host Chris Matthews, stunned by her remarks, asked Bachmann how many people in Congress hold anti-American views, she responded, “You’ll have to ask them.”

Bachmann called on the media to conduct investigations into the anti-American activities of members of Congress, similar to Sen. Joseph McCarthy’s discredited House Un-American Activities Committee hearings in the 1950s. “I think people would love to see an exposé like that,” she claimed. Watch it:

Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) made similar comments at a fundraiser yesterday, saying that she loved to visit “pro-America” areas of the country — “small towns” where “hard working” people are “very patriotic.”

Digg It!

UpdateThe Nation’s Katrina Vanden Heuvel, responding to Bachmann’s attacks, said, “Chris, I fear for my country.” Watch it here.

Michelle Bachmann is doing her party a great service. I'm sure she's popping up now just to show that Sarah Palin really isn't the dumbest politician the GOP has to offer.

But, go, Bachmann, you go, girl! Show the folks in Minnesnoter what lunatics now infest the Rethuglican party, and Franken will win in a cakewalk....

So she thinks the media should do a "penetrating investigation" of Congress. I, personally, think a neurologist should order a penetrating CT scan to see if she has a brain in her head.

I don’t know when Bachman’s up for re-election but I’m sure many Minnesota’ns right now will make sure that she’s ousted as soon as possible.

She was elected to the House in 2006, so she's running right now. I don't know where she stands in the polls.

  14. NeoII Says:

So, we know that Michele Bachmann is an utter moron but who are these folks in Minnesota that vote for her?

  15. techsong Says:

This chicks a total nut case. If I lived in MN I would run against her. She needs to be voted out by some sane person up there. Mathews needed to dig deeper and have her define "anti-american" views. Also I'm still waiting for the reason as to why liberals are bad. No one ever calls the people out on this. Ive you look at the definition of liberal it really doesn't look bad at all.

  16. tombaker Says:

Ms Bachmann perfectly represents the incoherent, paranoid provincialism that infests too much of the Country, making it less American by the day. Such people don't deserve democracy.

    ___________________________________________________________

As a member of the House of Representatives, Bachmann is up for re-election this year, as are all House members.

I haven't been able to find much information on her re-election race, but she's running against a guy named Elwyn Tinklenberg. Not much in the way of poll data, but one poll indicated Bachmann ahead by four points.

I do know that she's served only one term, and she was elected two years ago with the help of some very active evangelical groups in her district. She may get re-elected with that same kind of help.

  20. impeachcheneythenbush Says:

Backman on running for the U.S. Congress. Like too many far-right Christians (and she is, I believe, absolutely sincere in her beliefs...unlike Bush) thinks she knows the mind of God and that He was in favor of her winning. Sound familiar?

"God then called me to run for the United States Congress, and I thought 'What in the world will that be for?' and my husband said 'You need to do this,' and I wasn’t so sure, and we took 3 days and we fasted and we prayed and ...he made that calling sure And its been now 22 months that I’ve been running for United States Congress. Who in their right mind would spend 2 years to run for a job that lasts 2 years? You’d have to be absolutely a fool to do that. You are now looking at a fool for Christ. This is a fool for Christ. And in the midst of him making this calling sure, what has occurred now in this particular race is that this Congressional seat out of 435 in the country has become ... it has been one of the top five races in the country, and in the last week this has become one of the top three races in the country, you may have seen how God has in his own will, and his own plan, has focused like a laser beam after this scandal [involving Mark Foley] that came up about a week or so ago. He has focused like a laser beam in his reasoning on this race. The reason why this is one of the top three races is because this race will probably decide which way Congress goes this fall. We could talk more about what that means for this nation, what this means for defeating radical Islam, what this means for what the future of the family is going to be, what this is going to mean for the future of the freedom of religious expression."

If the television ratings are to be believed, the American people have been paying quite a bit of attention to this race. I know it is name calling, but this woman is a LOON!

  28. Bilbo Hussein Baggins Says:

    Here's her poll numbers:

Poll numbers released by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee on Thursday show Rep. Michele Bachmann leading Elwyn Tinklenberg by 4 points. Bachmann garnered the support of 42 percent of those polled while Tinklenberg had 38 percent. The poll says Bachmann’s approval rating in the 6th Congressional is at 34 percent.

It looks like she is in the market for losing her position. The thing I don't understand about the above quote is that her approval rating is at 34% and yet she has 42% of the vote in polling. What's up with that? People don't approve of her and but they are going to vote for her anyway.

There is a very big margin of undecideds in this race so I suspect that her opponent will ride in on Obama and Frankin's coat tails.

This interview certainly is not going to help her with the undecided's!

Not only them. There are races also going on in other countries, in which candidates are using a possible Obama presidency as a means of connecting with their voters.

If he wins, his "coattails" will stretch several continents.

here's pollster: http://www.pollster.com/polls/mn/08-mn-06-ge-bvt.php only two data points. Hopefully McCarthy, err, bachmann starts sliding after that little gem.

It continually amazes me that these "republicans" (i put it in quotes because they seem to be much closer to fascists than the original intent of the GOP) don't get the basic premise that this country was founded on... dissent, conflicting viewpoints, and incessant argument to determine the best course for the country. Pointing out that something is wrong with America and working to change it is the ultimate act of patriotism. Allowing king George IV,DHS, TSA and the house un-american committees tyranny, erosion of civil rights, and shredding of the constitution is the ultimate act of treason.

I think the next amendment to the constitution should be that all elected officials are REQUIRED to actually READ the d*** thing.

  37. pete Says:

As a Minnesotan I must remind everyone that she only "represents" one district, the 6th. I have even considered moving a few miles down the raod to have the pleasure of voting against her.

As for how she got there? She pulled a surprise coup, fueled by evangelical church groups, to win the nomination and then got massive support from the RNC against a DEM opponent who was, frankly, a light-weight. There was also a third party candidate who took a fairly high percentage of votes.

She is, currently, ahead in the polls but, her lead is quickly shrinking. And? She has refused, at the urging of her own party, to participate in most debates. Plus, she keeps appearing on national shows and saying asinine things. I have a feeling that the good people of the 6th District will make a better decision but, as has been pointed out, Minnesota politics can be downright goofy.

If you would like to learn more about crazy Shelly? Here's a site devoted to her defeat.

  38. misshusseinmolly Says:

Bachmann might want to look at some of the "anti-American" elements in her own party, particularly the associations of her party's POTUS and VPOTUS nominees.

How about McCain's association with Charles Keating? Does Bachmann believe that influencing Senators in order to get preferential treatment from regulators is a "pro-American" thing to do? Especially if this greed results in a financial crisis negatively impacting the country?

And how about Palin's association with a group that dreams of seceding from the United States? Is that considered "pro-American"?

Oh, and how about Palin's association with Westbrook Pegler? She used one of his quotes in her speech at the RNC. Pegler died when Palin was five years old, but by quoting him, she's obviously supportive of a man who expressed regret that an asssassination attempt against FDR didn't succeed, and in 1965 actually called for the assassination of Robert Kennedy. Does this sound "pro-American"?

And how about the head of McCain's transition team -- William Timmons? He actually lobbied for Saddam Hussein's interests at a time when our country was imposing sanctions on his. Would supporting our enemies be considered "pro-American"?

Bachmann may be onto something here about investigating the "anti-American" activities of certain people. But I don't think it's the liberals who are the problem. Perhaps we need to investigate Republicans.

  43. Bilbo Hussein Baggins Says:

Here's the latest Republican dirty trick in voting:

Texas Democratic Party officials are claiming an e-mail being circulated around the state is a 'dirty trick' by Republicans, an allegation rejected by the Texas GOP, 1200 WOAI news reports.

The e-mail claims that Texans who want to vote a straight Democratic Party ticket must also then 'go back' and vote specifically for Barack Obama for president.

But using the computerized voting machines in place in Texas, Dallas County Elections Administrator Bruce Sherbet says the opposite would happen, the voter would 'cancel out' the vote for Obama.

"If you had voted straight party, and it gave all the vote selections, if you had done this, and you go down to a particular race that already had a highlighted candidate, and you did it again, it would have the impact of deselecting the vote," Sherbet said.

Attorney Jonathan Smaby, who is an expert in legal technology, called it a 'dirty trick.'

"The reason is that if you do that you will actually deselect Obama rather than voting for him."

Republicans denied that they were behind the e-mail. The Texas Democratic Party has tried repeatedly to fight the use of the electronic voting machines by filing lawsuits, but the use of the machines has been upheld. One Republican official said the e-mail may have been manufactured by the Democrats as grounds to challenge the use of the machines again.

Bradblog.com recommends that no one use the "straight ticket" option. They say you should choose every candidate you want to vote for. Why? Because flipping the "straight ticket" vote is much easier than flipping each and every vote.

I truly hope that Obama pushes for vote by mail for the entire country. That is the only way we will be able to take back our democracy and be sure that everyone is allowed to vote. They can still hack the machine that will count the votes, but at least there is proof of how you voted to if needed in a recount.

  44. buzzbomb Says:

Here’s the latest Republican dirty trick in voting:
    __________________________________________________________

I agree that the "straight ticket" option should be abolished. Everywhere.

It gets confusing, because in Texas voting straight ticket and then casting a separate vote for the President will negate the vote.

However, here in North Carolina the opposite is true. Anyone voting straight ticket here MUST cast their vote for President separately, otherwise they will not have voted for President (the "straight ticket" option doesn't cover POTUS/VPOTUS).

And in California (where I lived before moving here), there is no "straight ticket" option at all.

Because e-mails can easily cross state lines (especially when they go viral), it would be easy for a cautionary (and accurate) message in North Carolina to create all kinds of havoc in Texas.

I refuse to vote straight ticket. I vote for each and every office separately, and I research all the candidates beforehand. Yes, the end result is often the same as if I voted straight ticket, but I've voted for some Republicans when I honestly thought that candidate would do a better job in that office.

I can't talk for Minnesotans, but when I was in the doctor's office yesterday this older gentleman started talking politics with the receptionist who said she was going to vote for Obama. Then the guy started questioning her on why she was going to vote for Obama and she didn't really give him a solid answer, then in a condescending tone he said you shouldn't vote for Obama but look up the facts on him and then vote for McCain. Given the gentleman was very much overweight, old and sounded like a general a-hole, I think he has always been a Republican who uses the "I read the newspaper and listen to the local neocon radio...so I always know more that you" spiel.

Of course these thugs are afraid, they're about to get rolled on the national and certain state levels like a barrel off a cliff!

She is a "formula politician" just like McNumbNuts who has only two rules: (1) no new taxes! and (2) if you don't agree with me, you're un-American. No intellect, no curiosity, no substance. alcyone Says:
#1, You need to see the entire interview to really appreciate how much editing went into this video to make it sound the way it did. It isn’t all that hard to find. The video really editors earned their money on this one.

Fair point. The unedited interview (7 minutes) doesn't make Rep. Bachmann look any better than the edited version does.

Are you saying that the editing altered the meaning of her words?

#2 McCarthy was trying to use the government to investigate people.

Bachmann is calling for the press to do a little digging into the past of Obama and inform the American people what they find about his friends and associates. Apparently the host really didn’t want anything to do with actually digging up facts.

Another fair point. Except for this; Michelle Bachmann uses McCarthyist rhetoric to impugn the motives and patriotism of her congressional colleagues without being willing to offer any evidence of the views she says they hold.

The host tried to dig up "facts" (i. e. what Michelle Bachmann actually meant by her rambling, delusional tirade) but the subject of the interview was unable to express anything but vague suspicions based on insignificant associations. No statements from any of those she accused, nothing.

Are you saying that there are actually "facts" about the "anti-American views" of Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid out there to be found?

The bottom line to this is that the headline “McCarthy-like investigation” is misleading at best….no, make that a lie…what a surprise.

In the sense that you emphasize -- a government-run investigation -- you are correct. But there is also the perspective that, like Joe McCarthy, Rep. Bachmann seeks an investigation into what she terms "anti-American views" that she claims are held by members of the US government. Besides, since the headline is a subjective characterization of the congresswoman's message, then it cannot be a "lie" since a lie requires an objective truth. Had you stuck with "misleading" you might have had an argument. It wouldn't have been a strong argument, but it would have been valid. Unfortunately, you overshot and now look foolish.

  119. MrSquirrel Says:

Don't hold all of us Minnesotans to account for this loon. She comes from a particularly yuppie, mostly suburban-exurban well-to-do district north of the Twin Cities.

Though I will say it is sad to see how many mindless drones there are like her in the suburbs here. But I assure you, many of us in the state have been disgusted that she could even win an election here.

I'm old enough to remember when this was a solidly progressive state, mostly Democrat but even the Republicans that succeeded here used to be progressive relative to the party in general.

  120. Trixie Says:

Well, I happen to be a "small town" Minnesotan. I live in a town of less than 1300 people and I do believe I am very hard working and very patriotic. I don't think that automatically makes me brain dead. There are many of us "evil liberals" up here in the back wood and we just don't cotton to crazy a** rich b*tch Sarah wanna-be's defining our entire state.

It's getting very scary out there folks. These republicans are just down right desperate. I'm honestly becoming afraid of what's to come.

  121. Mr. Evil Says:

Republicans, to put it simply, campaign and govern on fear, breakdown, division and destruction. They have nothing to offer with regards to ideas and innovation, building and creating, moving forward and progressing. They missed school the day 'leading by example' was taught.

  122. questioneverything Says:

Bachman is plain crazy. Who are the people in Minnesote who voted for this woman? I can't get my head around this demographic. For real!

They should have started an investigation on the kkk and other racist potholes who attend repugs' rallies. It amazes me, that it took the progressive blogs to call attention to these dangerous rabid racist. repugs actually believe it's normal to have these types of idiots in their audiences. (the dems have 3x as many people in their audiences and I don't hear dems yelling out racist rants)

Meanwhile the repugs are whipping up a blue-stain voter fraud bs. Signing up aliases happens whether people sign-up in person or on-line, or by mail. It justs happens.

Why don't the repugs recount the votes properly when the votes are in questioned?
Why don't the repugs play fair after the ballots have been casted?

This is another mcchimpy j0e-the-blunder trick.

    repugs must honor their subpoenas.

  124. Trixie Says:

#132, she used her evangelical mega church as a pulpit for one. She beat out Patty Wetterling (a tireless child advocate) for the job. It's the church thing, IMHO. There are many of these mega churches in the metro area and I think that's where she got most of her support in the last election. This time, I'm hoping, not so much.

I don't live in her district so I can't speak with any great authority but, there is HEAVY religion in all of the areas she represents. Particularly in the St. Cloud area.

  128. pete Says:

You're absolutely right, Trixie. She was a surprise entry who blindsided the incumbent (I can't recall his name) with a huge mass of "True Christian" delegates at the convention. He never knew what hit him.

She then received massive support from the RNC and Patty Wetterling, bless her heart, just didn't have the resources, or temperament, to put up much of a fight against Crazy Shelly and a third party.

I was alive during the McCarthy hearings, and this Bachmann is classic Fascism in the mold of Tail-Gunner Joe. She is very dangerous, so perhaps we should see some Saturday Night Live with her as the parody.

However, I do not find Pelosi, Reid, Obama, and Biden to be Classic Liberals or Progressives. I think they are Left-Leaning Corporatists.

So it begs the question. What is better for our country Corporate Feudalists or Corporate Leftists?

Both vote for War, Surveillance, Drilling, In favor of banks and credit companies, lie about Russia, and vote to extort the American Middle Class with a phony bailout?

OK, so you will get legal abortion, and maybe some environmental protection when Obama becomes president. But wait until the derivatives hits the food supply, as it is looking for new victims after the oil price scam. They all know the system is in collapse, and heaving more credit without manufacturing will lead down the same path.

Does Archer Daniels Midland come to mind? Do a search, and see who is funding big time.

  133. Trixie Says:

When Patty Wetterling couldn't get though the muck, it made me lose all faith that an honest, ordinary person could ever serve in government again. She has devoted her life to children and preventing terrible things ever happening to any of them. If she couldn't make it, how can any of us "ordinary" citizens ever? She had FAR more legislative experience (check the "Jacob Wetterling Act") than Crazy Shelly and she still lost. Sad times, bad times and I fear the worst is yet to come.

  139. pete Says:

Having trouble connecting dots, stupid troll? The "McCarthy-like" part is her accusation that "libruls" and "leftists" in Congress should be investigated for "unamerican" activities.

Regardless of who she wants to do the investigating, she uses the exact same language as the ol' tail-gunner. It doesn't matter what group is conducting a witch hunt. It's still a witch hunt and has no place in a free society.

Her implication is that anyone who isn't a far-right radical, like herself, is suspect. And that is "unamerican". Americans don't stifle dissent, we negotiate. We rise above philosophical differences and work together for the common good. Or, at least, we used to.

Sadly Crazy Shelly, and her ilk, insist on making enemies of people who disagree with them, their Faiths, or their party. She's as wrong as she can be. She's divisive, ignorant, offensive, and just plain wrong.

Please don't lump all Minnesotans together with that district... Zooey's from Idaho, right? She isn't a repub but most of Idaho folks are.

Believe it or not some people do not care to follow current events and instead pursue other interests. Most people could not find Iraq on a map even with relatively good schools. Religion and fear can be very important and exploited politically... Bachmann did that and won a PLURALITY not a majority (it still counts but it wasn't a rout by any means). And obviously before having any reponsibility she SEEMED more capable and less idiotic.

But she's going down now, Elwyn Tinklenberg has the Dem and ind. endorsements without a lot of baggage, oh and he actually shows up for debates. At this rate she could easily pull less than in 2006 and Mr. T can combine most of the votes Bachmann didn't get last time.

BTW it's Franken though he was introduced as Franklin last night by some doofus. It might be the closest Senate race, that or Mississippi.

Someone trying to defend Obama told me that “he took his kids to church” and I told them that he should have his kids taken away, then let Jesse Jackson do what he wanted to do so Barack couldn’t have any more.

McCarthy used the government to investigate people both in government and civilians. He was an anti-communist wacko who saw Stalin behind every tree and movie camera, and used his government power to destroy them.

There is a huge differenct between asking the media to do their job, and using the government to destroy people. That’s why I say the headline on this thread is a lie.

Here is just a bit on the civilian side of McCarthyism involving the now infamous “black listing” in Hollywood.

    http://www.moderntimes.com/blacklist/

“It was the later HUAC hearings of March 1951 lead by John S. Wood (D— Georgia), and the 1952 Internal Security subcommittee headed my Senator Pat McCarran that the “naming—of—names” became the watch words. By 1951, Joseph R. McCarthy was in full blossom. The entire country, Congress, and the Truman administration share equally in what was to come. It was from these latter hearings in Washington and in Hollywood, that the infamous BLACKLIST evolved. By that time, and as a direct result of these more recent hearings, more than 324 people had been fired by the studios and were no longer permitted to work in the Motion Picture Industry, none more pathetic than actor Larry Parks. Parks literally begged the committee not to force him to his knees.”

The stupid troll can't do that, hussein toasterhead. He thinks that Reichwhiners only look bad after selective editing and non-Reichwhiners are guilty by default. At least, that would make sense of his defense of the indefensible Crazy Shelly.

Unlike us, he accepted the verdict of the "librul media" rather than actually watching the "offensive" comments in context. Heck! I bet he refuses to believe, though it's been widely reported, that the "chickens coming home to roost" rant was actually a quote of a white former ambassador.

    ________

You're right. What we have is, to a large extent, a false choice. I know that. Most of us leftists know that. The choice between Obama and McCain is indeed a choice between two parties owned and operated by corporate entities. I wish voting for McKinney or Nader was a viable option, but unfortunately, it's a two-party system.

That's why we don't view this election as the end result of our struggle. It's the beginning.

We need to take our country back from the corporate masters who control it, no matter who gets appointed President this year. We need to restore our democracy, repair our nation's reputation, and yank this country back to sanity.

It seems to me that that'll be easier to accomplish under an Obama/Biden administration rather than a McCain/Rove administration.

Alrighty then, what is American? (or to clarify for the profoudly stupid, what is a United States Citizen?)

    1. Someone who respects the U.S. Constitution.

    2. Someone who respects the rights of all U.S. Citizens.

    3. Someone who repects the rights of persons held in our custody under the Geneva Conventions.

    Sigh...

I, for one, am satisfied with Sen Obama's answers re Ayers.

    1. Ayers hosted an event that featured Obama.

    3. Ayers is not affiliated with the campaign in any way.
    4. There has been no apparent contact between the two since, I believe, 2002.
    5. Obama has condemned Ayers criminal activities in the strongest terms.
    6. Prof Ayers shows every sign of having renounced violence and established himself as an extraordinary citizen.

And, in case you missed it, that famous quote that Flippy and Chippy throw out there? "I wish we had done more"? Remember that one. Well, if one reads the interview one will clearly see that that quote was an expression of frustration that they were not able to stop the war in Vietnam. He did not say "I wish we had BOMBED more". In fact, he clarified his statement whenhe was called out.

    ------

Pay attention, troll, and go read.... you can read can't you? Perhaps you missed the fact that *EVERY* person who has run for office against Obama has tried making this association stick. Each time it has been debunked in the press and by everyone who knows the story. This has gone on for years, and been vetted over and over again. What amazes me is that the "liberal" media keeps rehashing this and other thoroughly debunked stories, but none of them pays anywhere near as much attention to McCains ties with the same people (look up the Annenbergs and who else was on that same school board), the fact that McCains campaign is 100% lobbyists and Gdubya insiders, McCains associations with G.G. Liddy, Palins ties to SECESSIONISTS, ad nauseum. The media can't even get the Acorn issue reported factually (all of the registrations in question WERE IDENTIFIED AND GIVEN TO THE GOVERNMENT BY *ACORN* AS THEY ARE REQUIRED TO DO BY LAW) because that would undermine the repubs fear mongering.

    Liberal media. Yeah Right.

Stop getting your headlines from faux noise and go look this stuff up yourself... and get the facts for yourself.

You have a choice, you can educate yourself (and I've given you some clues where to start), or enslave yourself. Pick one.

  188. pete Says:

I'll take a stab at what they think makes one an American. It's a pretty short but very exclusive list.

    3. Their preachers and other church elders.
    4. Some of their neighbors and members of the congregation.
    5. Fat pricks with (R) after their names.

But the big one that never fails is, people who are even stupider than them. If you want to whip a Reichwhiner into a frenzy, prove that you are smarter than they are.

So, considering the level of intelligence displayed by Bible Spice and Crazy Shelly (Doesn't that sound like a 70's made for TV movie?), I would guess that they are convinced they are the only True Americans(TM). And I'm sure they have private, paranoid, doubts about each other.

The only reason that there are "questions" about Ayers, despite the fact that, as nomodubya says, the story has been debunked and explained again and again over the past 18+ months, is because the Rs strategy is to repeat the idea that because they're "not satisfied with Obama's explanation", therefore "there must be more to the story." They're just trying to keep the question open in their followers' empty minds. Of course, they would never be "satisfied" with any explanation from Obama, or any evidence, or even a pronouncement from their god, that Obama isn't "pallin' around" with Ayres. From your link.

In what has to be the most outrageous act of government intimidation of political opponents since the Alien and Sedition Acts, a group of prominent prosecutors and local law enforcement officials in Missouri, including in St. Louis and surrounding rural areas, have banded together and formed the "Obama Truth Squad." Under the rubric of enforcing "campaign ethics laws," they are threatening to take anyone to court who fails to tell "the truth" about the Dear Leader.

Seriously, if there is a doctor reading this.

Please check this woman for paranoid schizophrenia.

She shows stressing symptoms. Again seriously, This mental illness can be dangerous.

    Bilbo Hussein Baggins Says:

    alcyone Says:
If he were so thuroughly investigated, there would be no questions about his associations would there? The mainstream media loves the water Obama walks on and are not about to rock his boat.

The press has thoroughly investigated Obama’s association with Ayres. Don’t you remember them clamoring for the Annengerg records, which Obama asked to be released?

The problem is the answers the press has found are not the answers McNasty and the Republicans are looking for. Too bad so sad.

Sshhhh! We gotta keep this info that McCain has nothing of substance on Ayers on the down low. It makes trolls like this spin and coo that there is something, thereby making McCain look paranoid and crazy. As long as we can make McCain hop up and down like Gollum and have him reference Joe the Plumber, we can do our victory laps early!

Whoops, I've said too much! I'll see you at the meeting.

  211. ChrisSEA Says:

I made a contribution to Tinklenberg (her Democratic rival) because of her craziness. Apparently other people who are also outraged have also done this.

  212. Jane E. Schneider Says:

    Good for you, ChrisSEA!

Here's a petition for Bachman to be censured:
    http://www.censurebachmann.com/

I urge everyone to sign it and add your own comments.

  213. sectionop92 Says:

You know you've had a bad day when you're supposed to do a fairly innocuous TV interview and the host lets you bury yourself and possibly your career, in your own grave by way of your own mouth.

If I was Michele Bachmann, I'd say I was drunk and the devil took control of my mouth. At least it would play to the base!

  214. dbadass Says:

Hey Jane, you still about? I have a half a qallon of unpasteurized cider a side of salmon, some crab cakes, poblano peppers, halibut, tuna, strawberries, mesculin mix, zucchini, three different kinds of shrimp and some hand picked crab meat. We can have a party

  215. Robt Says:

What might Bachmann conclude of McCain's ties to G Gordon Liddy?

Must one explain Liddy and his criminal record?

What he attempted to do let alone what he did do ?

But Bachmann only has eyes for Obama.

OK, I realize McCain put America first when he knowingly became one of the Keating Five.

Or when McCain was the key note speaker at an ACORN gig.

McCain has many many more relationships with curruption and dangerous people that should be openly cleansed to the public than Obama by far. McCain calls it senoirity or experience.

Palin never explains her husbands membership with his group tht doesn't want to be part of America. But it is a good paying job for his wife, so it is OK?

And realy, Gov Palin running around now saying she has nothing to lose? Problem is, we the American people have something to lose. Perhaps Palin needs to put something on the line to pay a price to make her campaigning more competitive?

As John McCain said earlier in the year. (See it on you tube).

When a candidate has nothing but personal attacks he/she has no bearing on issues to govern. Para phrased of course.

  216. 1Watt Says:

Just what would it take to do a RICO of the RNC? Hatch Act violations too numerous to mention, phone jamming, e-mail hiding in violation of the records act. politicizing the DOJ, surly there is an organization willing to tackle this.

  217. Jane E. Schneider Says:

Jeez, dbadass, sorry I missed you, that would have been some party with all that food. Wayne and I got distracted by a bright shiny object (TV) for a couple of hours.

    Goodnight!

  218. Jane E. Schneider Says:

Oh, one last thought while I'm still semi-coherent: by extension, Ms. Bachmann also implied that any citizen who supports Obama and other 'liberals' is anti-American. That would mean that an overwhelming majority of Americans are anti-American. WTF? I guess that she would consider it a good thing that all of us are already being eavesdropped on, having our emails read, etc., by our own government, because, to her, we must be in league with the terrorists.

    What a freaking whackjob.

Lmao - Chris Matthews is NOT a news anchor. That you think he is, says you're misinformed on the most basic issues and facts. Low information voters like you are what's wrong with this country.

  222. williamf Says:

Nutsy stuff I say. She took an oath as a representative of the people to uphold the constitution and the laws of the land. She has undoubtedly misunderstood her role. She works for her constituents not god. I think she needs to reflect on what her ultra right wing (wingers) have given to us all. Unconstitutional removal of Habeus Corpus from the purview of the courts to the personal discretion of the president, kidnapping, rendition, torture, spying on Americans without benefit of court supervision, expansion of right wing law enforcement powers through localized federal task forces, a runaway vice president who sold the Iraq war on lies, a president of the wingers who can't finish a complete sentance, abandonment of our fellow citizens in New Orleans during hurricane Katrina, an Attorney General engaged in approval of torture, who called the Geneva Conventions "quaint," and yet it is the very substance of the conventions that our troops depend on if captured, indeterminate jailing, killing of innocents in Iraq and Afghanistan, stripping the freedom of information law and hiding behind classification of everything from a to z as secret. Hell we can't even see who the VP is seeing during office hours or see his home on the satellite. He is virtually and realistically vacant...what does he do anymore? And much, much more. There's a whole lot here that needs investigating and this lady has no business in our congress hate mongering and spewing her venom of disunity.

  223. dae Says:

What's amazing is that the Congressional District next to her's is the MN 5th which is represented by Keith Ellison who, as most know, is the first Muslim elected to the House and very progressive. What a juxtaposition, the most despicable dingbat loony in Congress and one of the smartest, most intelligent and compassionate members sitting side by side. I can only wonder what Keith thinks of his fellow Minnesotan.

  224. DallasNE Says:

The Constitution is just a piece of paper as Bush once said. McCain holds this same view. Recent stories say that the government will soon be listening in on every phone conversation in America. Supposedly this is so they can key in on certain words like "bomb" but what is to prevent them from changing the key word to "Obama"? Their word? Yeah, right. Pro American my ass.

  225. Alecto Says:

    Actually,
Palin and Bachman should be pissing off the females of the country big time. They are causing a backlash of women in politics, that only fuels the mysoginists in the GOP who actually do not feel that politics is for women. Palin and Bachman are SOOOO stupid, they are allowing themselves to be played like fiddles by these GOOPER mysoginists.

Female equal political access is getting launched back in time to pre-Suffragette. Oh the damage the GOP has done to our country. Isolation is NOT the answer, extermination is. Give every GOOPER who doesn't like it here, a plane ticket and vise to Dubai.
    F UCK 'EM ALL!!!!!!

  226. pete Says:

A very good point, Alecto. Bible Spice and Crazy Shelly are not smart enough to form their own ideas. They just spew the crap they are fed by their preachers, husbands, and assorted freaks with an (R) after their names. Though I suppose the voices in their heads might make a contribution, said voices are probably televangelists.

    Fred Says:

Hey brain, I read justin too occasionally.

Fred, I agree that Republicans are really blatant fascists, but this Democrat crew that votes against YOUR interests is not much better. Socialized corporatism is what it is called. I am sick and tired of the "Lesser of Two Evils" crap.

Do I have to keep repeating what Obama and Biden have voted on and stated:

    1 - Drilling for oil

2 - In favor of credit card companies

    3 - Telecom immunity

    4 - Bailout/Extortion scam

5 - Bold faced lies about Russia/South Ossetia conflict

6 - Accelerate war in Afghanistan

So keep lying to yourself. Either McCain or Obama we get more war, more surveillance, more corporatism.

Sorry Fred, I drink neither Blueberry or Cherry Kool Aid.

Ginkgo Biloba and Maca Root do just fine.

    Dr. Hussein Matt Says:

Brain, suicide is only option. Go play in the freeway, please. I did say ‘please’.

Naturally, idiots of the left persuasion, such as yourself, are mentally constipated, and cannot engage in a discussion of FACTS. You just proved to me that there is no difference between the left and the right when truth is thrown in front of your emotionally charged faces.

You are being suckered into "Jesus Obama", and disregard what he and Biden vote for.

Funny, how the response from a site like Freerepublic can be substituted for so-called "Progressive" sites.

Archer Daniels Midland, Monsanto, Verizon, At&T, the military industrial complex, the pharmaceuticals, and Wall Street will that you kindly for your vote. Personally, I prefer to live with my conscience, something even Progressives are forgetting.

Now, Dr Matt, keep repeating your mantra:

    "Lesser of Two Evils"

"A vote for third party is a vote for McCain"

    "Change"

  233. Fred Says:

    Brain From Planet Arous Says:

Brain, there is absolutley no need for you to resort to charactor assasination.....we know who uses those methods.

    You said it yourself.

I agree that Republicans are really blatant fascists

So if you believe that then you basically agree with us. We must get rid of the republicans. That is the goal right now. You are not helping, in fact you are helping them. Is that your true goal.

Help us now to rid our country of this cancer and I promise, I will be on board for addressing your valid points when we have a real opportunity to do just that.

Please stop with the rudeness.....it dosn't help your case. You claim to be a progressive, I don't see how you can think that any of us are anything but what you claim to be.

  234. Fred Says:

    charactor=character sorry for spelling errors

  235. FactsOnly Says:

    Brain From Planet Arous Says:

I am sick and tired of the “Lesser of Two Evils” crap.

Actually I have to agree with Brian here. While standing on the sidelines of this (an probably because of that) it seems to me that the whole of US politics somehow came to be rigged (probably purposefully by the likes of the corporate MSM and people like Murdoch) to become akin to some brainless "sporting" event, where cheering for "my team" (full of overpaid idiots who flock to the highest bidder) and the "personalities" within has replaced any rational thought. Its one thing to consciously advocate some policies of your candidate, quite another to succumb to a personality cult of your "star", which sadly appears to be the case with a large portion of both the Democrats and Republicans.

Also, the "Lesser of Two Evils" is a logical fallacy. Unless one can prove that at each election cycle the "lesser" of the evils becomes truly lesser then the last time, all one does by voting the "lesser evil" is to slow down the descent into the abyss, only to discover at the next election cycle that the "lesser evil" this time is deeper into the dark pit then the last time around.

Frankly, I am starting to seriously question if the entire scheme of the US (and by extension those in many other Western countries) "democracy" has really had it and has been irretrievably corrupted by the confluence of big business, politics and mass media working hand in hand to replace (unfortunately quite successfully) the citizens with brainless "consumers".

  236. tombaker Says:

who let the Nader/Paul '08 crowd loose?

  237. greenpagan Says:

Years ago at the old NYT political message boards one of my nicknames was Unamericano. I figured I'd preempt the opposition. I was also a lot less reverent, more transgressive, eschewing taboos, in those days. I billed myself as "the best in bad taste".

Making humor out of tragedy just for the nihilistic hell of it and to get under the skin of certain types is hard work. But I've mellowed with age. I've been accused to selling out. But for these prices I could care less. Actually, I think I'm still doing the same thing as always only in a different way, that's all.

  238. greenpagan Says:

What are you supposed to do choose the greater of the evils? Sometimes choosing the lesser evil mitigates the harm.

  239. Mathmn Says:

I was a teenaged geek who actually watched in horror the McCarthy anti communist sludge on TV. I cannot believe that a sitting legislator today would be so insane as to accuse a presidential nominee of being unpatriotic.

I would expect her apology, her resignation and her voluntary commitment to an asylum.

  243. FactsOnly Says:

    greenpagan Says:

What are you supposed to do choose the greater of the evils? Sometimes choosing the lesser evil mitigates the harm.

Choosing the "lesser evil" does "mitigate" the harm in the sense that it slows down the disaster. But it does NOT stop it. And as such it is, in the end, en exercise in futility.

And no, I do not think that voting Nader/Paul/Whatever-other-hopeless-candidate is a "solution". When the game is rigged, you are going to get the short end of the stick no matter how you play it. The only way to "win" such a rigged game is to kick the game board over and punch the cheating crooks who rigged it in the face. And that is the hard truth many here do not wish to hear, desperately hoping that some miraculous "messiah" will somehow, against all odds and against all empirical evidence deliver a miracle. And each time when your last idol persona fails to deliver, you desperately latch onto the next, whilst accusing those who point out your folly of being guilty of ... that very folly, as you cannot even imagine that someone can possible not be a cheerleader for some pointless "team" in the game (Paul/Nader/Greens/etc). It is sad really.

What is the solution? Damned if I know. But that does not in any way invalidate my observation that playing the rigged game must, and will, in the end lead only to the "honest" players' (in this case the "voters") complete and utter defeat.

So she thinks the media should do a “penetrating investigation” of Congress. I, personally, think a neurologist should order a penetrating CT scan to see if she has a brain in her head. but i do, i have brain and using it in my field of certifications as I'm going to attempt my 70-642 Windows Server 2008 Network Infrastructure, Configuring exam which I had prepared from best IT Training service provider and I’m confident to pass it in first attempt as I have already pass my 70-620MCTS: Windows Vista, Configuration Exam along with 70-630 Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007, Configuring with high score as i will be free from all this i must return on your page and see whats other people are saying and palin start using her brain or not.
