Bachmann Lies, Denies She Ever Called Barack Obama’s Views ‘Anti-American’

After right-wing Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) appeared on MSNBC’s Hardball on Friday and called for a McCarthyite investigation into the “anti-American views” of members of Congress, she has come under a withering storm of criticism. Her opponent — Democrat Elwyn Tinklenberg — has raised $640,000 since Bachmann’s comments.

This morning, Bachmann tried to undo the damage. Appearing on WCCO (Minneapolis’ local CBS affiliate), Bachmann denied she ever called Barack Obama’s views “anti-American”:

HOST: You do feel his [Obama's] views are anti-American?

BACHMANN: I feel his views are concerning. I’m calling on the media to investigate them. I’m not saying that his views are anti-American. That was a misreading of what I said. And so I don’t believe that’s my position. I’m calling on the media to take a look at what his views are.

Watch it:

That’s a lie. Here’s what Bachmann said on Hardball:

CHRIS MATTHEWS: So you believe that Barack Obama may have anti-American views?

BACHMANN: Absolutely. I’m very concerned he may have anti-American views.

Watch it:

In her Hardball appearance, Bachmann said, “The news media should do a penetrating exposé” into the “views of the people in Congress and find out if they’re pro-America or anti-America.”

Update Today, Colin Powell "described statements made by U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann Friday questioning whether Barack Obama is anti-American as 'nonsense.'"

OK, so she lied. But what’s with her comment about Obama taking away the right of the secret ballot from common Americans? What was she talking about?

  6. JimboSlice says:

Catherine Harris, Michelle Bachmann, Heather Wilson, Sarah Palin … I can see why the GOP wants to take rights away from women, being around those women wouldn’t you!?

  7. 5th Estate says:

    To be precise:

“Absolutely. I’m very concerned he may have anti-American views.”

    not “He has anti-American views”.

BUT of course she suspects he has “anti-American views” and thinks the media should find-out for her.

It sure would help if she would define what anti-American means, but of course once she does that she’d knowwhether Obama was “anti-American” or not.

From everything I know about here and everything she has said she is technically insane.

Oops, Bachmann’s balderdash has come back to haunt her. Here is a person who has found a problem so severe that she has called upon the media to investigate it. Bachmann has a depth problem, both in perception and action, so of course she reaches for superficial solutions as a ruse.

This lady has lied since she took office. I guess the voters of her State realize she’s stupid and as dumb as a door knob. Those good old days of stealing are gone and she will not get that kick back money from the GOP that they have been stealing from the US Treasury. At lease we’re seeing the Law Makers that are nuts and wacko’s.

Right, Michelle. Hopefully, the nearly two decade effort to finally enact a mental health parity standard will insure that this presumptively clinically insane sociopath will not be discriminated against by her health maintenance organization when she seeks treatment for her clearly pre-existing condition!

That IS what you’re talking about, after all, isn’t it, Michelle? Dissent?

  33. Minnesota Raindog says:

Welcome to the deceitful world of Michele Bachmann. The rest of the country is finally catching up to what many of us in Minnesota have unfortunately known for all too long: Michele Bachmann is a pathological liar. And she’s not very good at it. This isn’t the first time she’s been caught lying on video. Nor is it the first time she’s made a complete fool of herself on video. But it may be the ugliest. Get your fix of Bachmannalia at http://www.dumpbachmann.blogspot.com

  34. bob hussein lablah says:

BACHMANN: I feel his views are concerning. I’m calling on the media to investigate them.

Yes, clearly the media hasn’t investigated Obama’s background thoroughly enough. Tool.

  35. cjmartinez says:

She’s correct on this one. She didn’t say he had anti-American views. She said he may have anti-American views. Of course, she then goes on with the innuendo and implications. So she’s correct that she never SAID that, but she IMPLIED it, and did so in terms obvious enough so all the ignorant O’Reillyites and Hannitoids will know what she means. Of course, it’s misleading, but that’s never stopped the republicans before.

If we avoid riots in the Streets this November, I’ll call it a successful election.

What’s that mean? She doesn’t know for sure?

  39. BillJ-MN says:

I wouldn’t recommend anyone become too confident that this will prevent her reelection. I lived in her district for three years and there was one aspect of it that made the strongest impression on me. I’ve never lived anywhere else that was so casually and unapologetically racist. Granted, I’ve never lived in the deep south, but still …

El Tinklenberg has had an uphill battle and hasn’t had a lot of money to run with. Still, he has managed to close the gap in polling to within the margin of error, and that was before Bachmann’s delusional display last Friday. With any luck, her district will have enough self-respect to realize they need to cut this lunatic loose after her latest load of crap.

  40. MrSquirrel says:

I must say it was nice to see Powell took the time to give her a well-deserved slapdown.

  41. MrSquirrel says:

I would hope any news media that airs her denial, would also air her original statements, so everyone can see and judge for themselves.

She thinks we would all welcome an investigation into which Congress members are Pro-American, and which are Un-American. But she never tells us who she thinks should define those terms.

  44. pete says:

As a, usually, proud Minnesotan from the 4th District I would like to thank everyone for rising above bashing the “drooling morons of Minnesota” as I saw on another site. Just for the record, she used some unique circumstances to get elected and did NOT receive a majority. I believe she was elected with around 45% of the vote and, even with a third party candidate getting a pretty hefty share, her outspent and gentle Dem opponent made it close.

There are some encouraging signs we will get this freak out of office. There’s the massive amount of donations coming in to her opponent, from every state and a few foreign countries, and the local media is reporting the story. While they are not hitting her as hard as they should they are at least using words like “extreme”, “outrageous” and “divisive”. So, that’s a good thing. Plus, the most recent poll I saw, from before she went off on Hardball had her with only a 4 point lead and 8$ undecided.

However, the development I am most curious to watch pan out is that her Republican primary opponent has started a write in campaign for Republicans who have enough sense to see she has to go but can’t bring themselves to vote for a Dem. If her comments keep getting air play, and he gets the word out, we just might see a Dem in her seat.

The really funny part was a brief comment by one of her campaign workers on local news. This particular spokesbimbo was trying to claim that Mathews “forced her into a corner” and that the controversy is just “far left spin”. And all the while there were three people standing behind her shaking their heads. I’m not sure who they were but they weren’t buying it. I’m guessing that there’s a lot of wailing and gnashing of teeth in the Bachmann house tonight. It couldn’t happen to more deserving people.

  45. pete says:

Dang! Here’s the link about her Republican opponent reentering the race. I’m thinking of sending him a few bucks and a thank you for trying to derail the (bleeping bleep) Representative’s campaign. I can’t help but admire a guy who will turn against his party when the line is crossed. It may be a kamikaze mission but every vote taken from Psycho Shelly is a blow for truth and rational governance.

  48. the Lone Voice of Reason says:

Palin didn’t have the chutzpah to do what she had been practicing all week with that rap song for Weekend News on SNL? Doubt it, more like the GOP slapped some small sense into her dense little head. I loved what Baldwin said to her (except Fey is way better looking, of course, because there isn’t bullshite dribbling out HER mouth every time she talks.)

  49. mmanion says:

I was actually fairly critical of Matthews for letting her spew uninterupted. I got that he was trying to let her hang herself, but it still allowed her an unchallenged platform to make accusations and insinuations. Now I’m so glad he did it. Hard for her to credibly claim he backed her into a corner when she essentially free-associated all the hateful thoughts in her head for 13 minutes. Whether she said Obama had anti-American notions or may have anti-American notions is irrelevant. The entire concept is reprehensible and she most certainly did suggest that there is the potential for “enemies within” among her own Congressional colleagues.

People joke that she’s nuts, but I think she actually may be. Her law degree came from some satellite of Bob Jones or Oral Roberts or one of those types of colleges. The law school is now defunct–it only lasted ten years. She is afraid of fluorescent light bulbs (I can’t remember why–does anyone know? Probably they fill your soul with the evil spirit or something) and she was caught on camera hiding in the bushes spying on a gay pride rally in St. Paul several years ago. These are not healthy normal behaviors, although her hubby is a “pray away the gay” therapist so maybe she was just trying to drum up business for him. It’s hard to imagine how she was elected. Comments on this story in the Star Trib are running at least 10 to 1 against her, but of course the Strib is a liberal paper. Haven’t had the heart to check out the Pioneer Press’s coverage.

  50. pete says:

Speaking of Baldwin’s performance, I noted that he was looking at a point in front of Lorne Michals. I thought that he was reading a teleprompter. Logical enough if it was a spur of the moment bit.

  52. pete says:

    mmanion:

She claims that she’s concerned about compact fluorescent replacing incandescent lights because of the mercury. Though I think it was a way to claim a pro-environment position on an issue that wouldn’t harm the energy industry. Of course it never occurred to her, or anyone in the press, that we have been recycling fluorescent tubes for decades and compacts contain a tiny portion compared to tubes.

Forgive the length, but it’s an interesting (and at times, galling) read:

Letter: Andrew Lahde, Lahde Capital Management
    By Andrew Lahde

    October 17, 2008

Today I write not to gloat. Given the pain that nearly everyone is experiencing, that would be entirely inappropriate. Nor am I writing to make further predictions, as most of my forecasts in previous letters have unfolded or are in the process of unfolding. Instead, I am writing to say goodbye.

Recently, on the front page of Section C of the Wall Street Journal, a hedge fund manager who was also closing up shop (a $300 million fund), was quoted as saying, “What I have learned about the hedge fund business is that I hate it.” I could not agree more with that statement. I was in this game for the money. The low hanging fruit, i.e. idiots whose parents paid for prep school, Yale, and then the Harvard MBA, was there for the taking. These people who were (often) truly not worthy of the education they received (or supposedly received) rose to the top of companies such as AIG, Bear Stearns and Lehman Brothers and all levels of our government. All of this behavior supporting the Aristocracy only ended up making it easier for me to find people stupid enough to take the other side of my trades. God bless America.

There are far too many people for me to sincerely thank for my success. However, I do not want to sound like a Hollywood actor accepting an award. The money was reward enough. Furthermore, the endless list of those deserving thanks know who they are.

I will no longer manage money for other people or institutions. I have enough of my own wealth to manage. Some people, who think they have arrived at a reasonable estimate of my net worth, might be surprised that I would call it quits with such a small war chest. That is fine; I am content with my rewards. Moreover, I will let others try to amass nine, ten or eleven figure net worths. Meanwhile, their lives suck. Appointments back to back, booked solid for the next three months, they lookforward to their two week vacation in January during which they will likely be glued to their Blackberries or other such devices. What is the point? They will all be forgotten in fifty years anyway. Steve Balmer, Steven Cohen, and Larry Ellison will all be forgotten. I do not understand the legacy thing. Nearly everyone will be forgotten. Give up on leaving your mark. Throw the Blackberry away and enjoy life.

So this is it. With all due respect, I am dropping out. Please do not expect any type of reply to emails or voicemails within normal time frames or at all. Andy Springer and his company will be handling the dissolution of the fund. And don’t worry about my employees, they were always employed by Mr. Springer’s company and only one (who has been well-rewarded) will lose his job.

I have no interest in any deals in which anyone would like me to participate. I truly do not have a strong opinion about any market right now, other than to say that things will continue to get worse for some time, probably years. I am content sitting on the sidelines and waiting. After all, sitting and waiting is how we made money from the subprime debacle. I now have time to repair my health, which was destroyed by the stress I layered onto myself over the past two years, as well as my entire life – where I had to compete for spaces in universities and graduate schools, jobs and assets under management – with those who had all the advantages (rich parents) that I did not. May meritocracy be part of a new form of government, which needs to be established.

On the issue of the U.S. Government, I would like to make a modest proposal. First, I point out the obvious flaws, whereby legislation was repeatedly brought forth to Congress over the past eight years, which would have reigned in the predatory lending practices of now mostly defunct institutions. These institutions regularly filled the coffers of both parties in return for voting down all of this legislation designed to protect the common citizen. This is an outrage, yet no one seems to know or care about it. Since Thomas Jefferson and Adam Smith passed, I would argue that there has been a dearth of worthy philosophers in this country, at least ones focused on improving government. Capitalism worked for two hundred years, but times change, and systems become corrupt. George Soros, a man of staggering wealth, has stated that he would like to be remembered as a philosopher. My suggestion is that this great man start and sponsor a forum for great minds to come together to create a new system of government that truly represents the common man’s interest, while at the same time creating rewards great enough to attract the best and brightest minds to serve in government roles without having to rely on corruption to further their interests or lifestyles. This forum could be similar to the one used to create the operating system, Linux, which competes with Microsoft’s near monopoly. I believe there is an answer, but for now the system is clearly broken.

Lastly, while I still have an audience, I would like to bring attention to an alternative food and energy source. You won’t see it included in BP’s, “Feel good. We are working on sustainable solutions,” television commercials, nor is it mentioned in ADM’s similar commercials. But hemp has been used for at least 5,000 years for cloth and food, as well as just about everything that is produced from petroleum products. Hemp is not marijuana and vice versa. Hemp is the male plant and it grows like a weed, hence the slang term. The original American flag was made of hemp fiber and our Constitution was printed on paper made of hemp. It was used as recently as World War II by the U.S. Government, and then promptly made illegal after the war was won. At a time when rhetoric is flying about becoming more self-sufficient in terms of energy, why is it illegal to grow this plant in this country? Ah, the female. The evil female plant – marijuana. It gets you high, it makes you laugh, it does not produce a hangover. Unlike alcohol, it does not result in bar fights or wife beating. So, why is this innocuous plant illegal? Is it a gateway drug? No, that would be alcohol, which is so heavily advertised in this country. My only conclusion as to why it is illegal, is that Corporate America, which owns Congress, would rather sell you Paxil, Zoloft, Xanax and other addictive drugs, than allow you to grow a plant in your home without some of the profits going into their coffers. This policy is ludicrous. It has surely contributed to our dependency on foreign energy sources. Our policies have other countries literally laughing at our stupidity, most notably Canada, as well as several European nations (both Eastern and Western). You would not know this by paying attention to U.S. media sources though, as they tend not to elaborate on who is laughing at the United States this week. Please people, let’s stop the rhetoric and start thinking about how we can truly become self-sufficient.

With that I say goodbye and good luck.

    All the best,

    Andrew Lahde

    Minnesotans,

Certainly you can do better than this d-o-u-c-h-e bag!

  78. shag11 says:

Granted, it’s difficult to get a straight answer out of most politicians, but these rightwingers are living in some kind of parallel universe. The fact that McCain, and these other rightwingers, lie one day, say something different the next day, and think no one knows what they’d said previously.

  79. jasperjava says:

    Arizona Barbie = Cindy McCain

Just thought I’d clear that up.

  80. sander says:

I truly believe she is one of the dumbest people I have ever had the misfortune of listening to. The only reason she got elected in the first place was with the help of a church, a large church, in her district.
I am curious if they will elect her again. I am truly embarassed she is from my state. sigh
But on a lighter note, when listening to her spew forth her nonsense it makes everyone else seem much more intelligent.

  81. Austin says:

Yes, the media needs to look into Obama’s views already. I mean its not like he’s written two books on his views, or been in political office for 8 year voting his views, or given hundreds and hundreds of speeches and interviews in the last 20 months explaining his views, or anything like that.

I want a commercial running in MN with her saying, “That’s not what I said,” followed by the footage of her saying it!

  82. chiefeditor says:

  83. Great Frybread King says:

What’s her defintion of “anti-American” views? Is speaking out against the state’s abuse of its powers anti-American? I’d say that’s more American than supporting a murderous regime – the Bush administration – like a robot like most of the GOP.

  84. 4acause says:

Yeah she is a nutcase but hey dont let them stop it is getting good I said it would get ugly and it is any phschologist would tell you this when one dumb facist rasist ahole crawls from under the crapper all the rest will follow this way they will expose themselves and then we can really see who they are…..
