Today on NBC’s Meet the Press, former Secretary of State Gen. Colin Powell endorses Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL).
UPDATE: Today on Fox, host Chris Wallace asked McCain about the endorsement. McCain said, “This doesn’t come as a surprise.” Watch it:
UPDATE II: On ABC, CNN’s David Gergen called it the “most important” endorsement of the 2008 campaign thus far.
UPDATE III: Watch Powell’s endorsement on NBC here:
UPDATE IV: This morning, Fox and Friends wondered, without proof, whether Powell’s endorsement of Obama was retribution for not being chosen as McCain’s VP: “And do we know whether in fact he had been vetted by the McCain campaign for vice president at some point? Do we know whether they ever had a discussion with Sen. McCain about whether he would be considered as a vice presidential candidate and if he did, and he wasn’t selected, how does that affect this endorsement?” (HT: JimboSlice)
UPDATE V: The New York Times has more on Kareem Rashad Sultan Khan, a Muslim U.S. soldier who died in Iraq. Khan was referenced by Powell this morning to illustrate the point that being labeled a “Muslim” should not be deemed a smear. The photo Powell referenced:

Powell also “endorsed Bush’s Iraq lie.
October 19th, 2008 at 9:33 amI’m guessing mccrazed is going to have another melt down over this one…Clenched jaw’s, eye;s blinking and popping, short’s in a bunch….Poor thing, time to fold up the mccrazy circus tent and go home…Be sure and take the ring leader with ya mccrazy….Blessings
October 19th, 2008 at 9:34 amLemme see if I got this right:
A former GOP official who NEVER distinguished himself as a man of principle when he was in the Govt, and who lied to the Country and to the UN about the reasons for going go war, ignored intelligence his bosses wanted ignored, helped lead the Country into the most disastrous military debacle in 40 years, now switches over to “our” side, and it’s suddenly Game-set-match for US? “We’re” supposed to be delighted by this information?
Explain this thing to me, please…
October 19th, 2008 at 9:38 amIf you are watching Mr Powell’s little press meeting write now, he’s hammering the GOP on their negative campaign. And I mean really HAMMERING!!
October 19th, 2008 at 9:38 amPowell is no hero to those who opposed the Iraq invasion.
So, the only good thing is that this will eclipse McCain-Palin for a few news cycles and will dominate the Sunday talk shows..
Expect to see Limbaugh and other regressives to launch a vicious and scathing attack on Powell for the next few days.
October 19th, 2008 at 9:38 amWhy does colin powell hate america? it will be interesting to see how the talking heads at faux news spin this without appearing like the racists they are known to be.
October 19th, 2008 at 9:45 amI’m an atypical far left wing liberal!
October 19th, 2008 at 9:47 amGen. Powell gave a very thoughtfull endorsement of Barack Obama.
He praised Sen. McCain’s public service, but criticized Republicans and the McCain Campaign for DIVISIVE Politics.
He Questioned Gov. Palin’s qualifications to be the President, and Sen. McCain’s judgement in Choosing her.
He characterized Sen. Obama as a Transformational Candidate, who performed well in the current Economic Crisis.
He defused the Racial Aspects of his decision, by reminding Tom Brokaw that he has only NOW made his decision.
He gave a very Poignant description of a fallen Arab-American Soldier who died in Iraq, to rebut the Canard that Obama is an Arab.
In my opinion, he struck the Right tone to convince Independent Voters to support Sen. Obama.
October 19th, 2008 at 9:53 amThe media might think Powell’s opinions matter but I sure as hell don’t.
I think it would be reasonable to assume that a lot of informed Democratic voters won’t give a damn either about Powell’s opinion either.
Powell’s opinion only provides democrats with a talking point that can be used against Republicans, and it’s a weak one.
Bush’s war salesman and former SOS crawls out from behind his 4-star benefits after 2 years presents opinions that millions a;lready have and have had for a year, and his opinion somehow matters?
I think not.
October 19th, 2008 at 9:54 amI lost all respect for Powell a very long time ago when he helped pramote the Iraq genocide…He waited to long to come forward….Having said that, now every vote and endorsment count’s…..Perhap’s he is thinking of future job potential’s or maybe he really has seen the light, no matter…What ever his reasons and thought’s now this can’t hurt the left…Blessings
October 19th, 2008 at 9:55 amBreaking news on Fox:
Recent investigations have revealed Colin Powell was a member of the weather underground…code name acorn has just endorsed obama. supermarkets having record sales on tinfoil as neoclowns fashion their hats.
October 19th, 2008 at 9:57 amI’m convinced the more racist republicans get trying to smear obama, the more minorities they will motivate to go to the polls…wonderful to see how the republicans try to tear powell down while tiptoeing around the “the darkies just helping his brotha out” meme they want to get across
someone needs to ask mccain why this is “not surprising”…we all know what mcain is trying to imply..he needs to be forced to say it..”this is not surprising because their both black”…
October 19th, 2008 at 9:57 amBadger: In my opinion, he struck the Right tone to convince Independent Voters to support Sen. Obama.
If the various news media interviews I’ve seen of Independent voters are anything to go-by, there’s absolutely no telling WHAT will persuade them to vote. No reason to suppose Powell’s worthless opinion will do anything other than just continue their confusion.
October 19th, 2008 at 9:58 am9. Dr. Hussein Matt Says: If you’re not happy with his endorsement…you typical far far left-wing..heehaw..heehaw…
It’s not the endorsement, gutterball, it’s the multiple “good soldier” coverups by Powell that reduces the worth of that endorsement to that of Joey Buttafuoco.
Powell sold out his country with My Lai and again with Iraq, (and who knows what else he’s deep-sixed?) then got a free Jaguar from Prince Bandar.
Powell, like bush, is a fraud who wants to remain relevant.
October 19th, 2008 at 10:03 amPsssstttt, hey grampy mclame…no one’s “paying attention to your message” nor cares about your message other than the mouth breathers addicted to fox.
October 19th, 2008 at 10:05 amThis endorsement is less important now that we know how Powell compromised his integrity when he went forward with the fabricated dramatics at the UN in February 2003. However, the endorsement does have influence on any number of voters who don’t think any less of Powell, and who respect his judgment. Some will think this is an endorsement because of race, and will dismiss it out of hand, but anyone who thinks that is a bigot himself.
October 19th, 2008 at 10:05 amThis is a good thing for Obama and I am happy to see it because it will certainly turn the heads of some of the yet “undecideds.”
BTW, Obama is ahead of McCain in newspaper endorsements by about 4-1. Again, newspaper readership is declining, so one must expect its influence is also sliding.
But everything added together: Obama’s rally attendees, polls, newspapers, personal endorsements and Obama himself are encouraging me to believe that the end of the “reign of witches” is at hand.
The critical, challenging and difficult battle to restore America will begin.
5th Estate,
I think news media interviews of self described independent voters is, at best, ancedotal.
Polls show Independent voters breaking for Sen. Obama by double digits.
It’s only my opinion, but I believe Gen Powell is VERY Influential with Independents…more so than with Republicans.
Time will tell.
October 19th, 2008 at 10:06 amStill…I guess this may be one of those news cycle ‘victories’ in that the bobble-heads will be talking about it in the simplest of terms: “Former Bush Chief of Staff/Secretary of State Slams GOP, McCain.”
If Obama uses Powell to score some points I won’t be impressed but of course it won’t turn me against Obama if he mentions it, and if he does use it I don’t imagine he’ll harp on it, because he simply doesn’t need to.
October 19th, 2008 at 10:07 amFox and Friends said that MAYBE this endorsement was because MAYBE Powell was vetted by the McCain camp for VP and MAYBE he was turned down and MAYBE that hurt his feelings.
Got that, Powell really doesn’t believe in Obama, he just might have been in a hypothetical situation F and F invented.
October 19th, 2008 at 10:09 amBadger Says: “It’s only my opinion, but I believe Gen Powell is VERY Influential with Independents…more so than with Republicans.”
Well you may be right.
Of the self described Indies I’ve seen/hear interviewed I can’t figure out how they decided that they are ‘undecided’!
October 19th, 2008 at 10:15 amAnd of course I’ve only seen about two-dozen interviews at best so that’s admittedly a ridiculously small sample from which to judge anything. :)
Marie Dear, you wrote “reign of witchs”…LOL…I know of no witchs who have ever been war like , likely few are on the reich…Everyone alway’s think’s of witch’s in the Hollywood bad. ugly, evil movie way…Being a witch is not a bad thing, we are earth friendly…Blessings
October 19th, 2008 at 10:18 amJimboSlice Says: Fox and Friends said that MAYBE this endorsement was because MAYBE Powell was vetted by the McCain camp for VP and MAYBE he was turned down and MAYBE that hurt his feelings.
Well that is the WATB Republican M.O., but Powell’s Republican -Lite so, not-so-much. And highly doubtful.
October 19th, 2008 at 10:21 amPowell didn’t endorse Obama to convince anyone on this board or to convince any Democratic voters. He could do some good with voters who are undecided because of national security concerns and who haven’t connected all the dots that thoroughly discredit Republican competence on all foreign policy. Having someone associated with the Republicans calmly shoot down McPalin’s attacks can only help Obama. The over the top attacks on Powell that are about to launch from the right will only add to the disunity of the Republicans as well. This is a good day for Obama even if you detest Powell.
October 19th, 2008 at 10:22 amHey Marie…
Clear well-crafted comment. I think you covered pretty much everything.
October 19th, 2008 at 10:26 amDr. Hussein Matt Says:
tokin librul Says:
If you’re not happy with his endorsement, fill free to write in Hillary’s name, you typical far far left-wing liberal pile of whining sh*t.
A little short on the “explaint this to me” part, there, Matt?
Too much time on the short bus as a kid? Comprehensionally challenged?
Whatever…imbibe your own runny feces and expire, cully!
October 19th, 2008 at 10:27 amThe over the top attacks on Powell that are about to launch from the right will only add to the disunity of the Republicans as well. This is a good day for Obama even if you detest Powell.
Please.
Powell is an icon, a successful and articulate black republican. There is no way they will attack him for this endorsement.
No. Way.
October 19th, 2008 at 10:29 amWell reasoned by Powell. And good thing that people can change.
October 19th, 2008 at 10:30 am“There is no way they will attack him for this endorsement.”
They do, at least at freerepublic…
They do, at least at freerepublic…
And we all know how in tune with current trends they are.
Got a better example? Anyone with a national reputation?
October 19th, 2008 at 10:33 amPersonally I won’t ever forgive Powell for failing to blow the lid off Bushco when he resigned. How much of that was misplaced loyalty, and how much was covering his own ass, we will never know. But…
The thing to keep in mind is that Powell does have credibility with many people and he has really taken the GOP smear machine to task. It’s too little, too late, to regain my respect but, he did a service to this country with this endorsement of Obama and rejection of the GOP crap.
October 19th, 2008 at 10:37 amdo you have enough free time to be free?
October 19th, 2008 at 10:43 amHi, witch1,
October 19th, 2008 at 10:44 amNo offense, please. I was quoting from Thomas Jefferson who spoke of the reign of witches.
Thanks, 5th.
October 19th, 2008 at 10:46 am“Got a better example? Anyone with a national reputation?”
October 19th, 2008 at 10:46 amThere is none yet as far as I know but lets wait and see.
The Privacy Center is soo tiresome…
October 19th, 2008 at 10:50 amIs there any chance that Andrea Mitchel could get shipped to FAUX? Perhaps she could be Glenn Beck’s “Mika”? I swear that if I here another “reporter” call Obama’s ads, specifically the one with Flippy McSpin proudly proclaiming his 90% Chimp support, “attacks” I’ll need to punch someone.
October 19th, 2008 at 10:52 amHey tokun, and everyone else, it’s pretty clear that Dr. Hussein Matt has been namejacked. Don’t pay any attention to those posts, the REAL DHM would never have said those things.
Powell is a piece of dirt, no doubt about it after the last 8 years, however his endorsement IS important as has been said already in the sense that someone with foreign policy experience (even if it has been misused) just endorsed the “inexperienced” Obama, also someone from the other party just broke from the ranks and endorsed him. This is important in how it affects independent voters. There is still a large contingent of them that have respect for Powell (who knows why, but that’s not important). This only helps Obama and that is good.
October 19th, 2008 at 10:52 amThis is a good day for Obama even if you detest Powell.
Totally agree with you on this. Powell won’t influence the anti-Iraq War crowd but that is irrelevant. He will sway the McCain-leaning independents and I think he may even change the minds of some of the decideds in that category.
His reasoning for his decision is very broad and compelling to anyone with an open mind that listened closely to what he had to say.
To those here who dismiss him because of his actions on the part of the GDumbya administration, just think of the weight of evidence he had to take into his consideration of his own decision. It is quite impressive that he is endorsing Obama given his past loyalty to both Poppy and GDumbya. And that’s the crusher here — especially with those voters who still regard Poppy Bu$h highly. Those are the voters likely to be influenced by his comments.
FoxSnooze can conjecture all they want about “hurt feelings”. All they are doing is displaying the superficiality that characterizes the Unstable/Unable ticket and the extreme right-wing in this country. Their reign is over . . . it’s time for some deep-thinking adults to take charge.
October 19th, 2008 at 10:56 amMcCain said he was endorsed by Henry Kissinger,James Baker, Alexander Haig and others, but all of these are hard core Republicans and will endorse anybody simply for just being a Republican.
What makes Colin Powell’s endorsement different is that he was always Republican, and served four years under Bush as Secretary of States.
He also gave good reasons to justify his decision.
Colin Powell saw his party falling apart, before taking this decision.
October 19th, 2008 at 11:00 amMarie, no offence taken here…Liked the post’s..Alway’s have to laugh a little when people quote or mention witchs like it’s a bad thing…Have a great day posting.,Love reading your thought’s..Blessings
October 19th, 2008 at 11:02 amPeople learn, change and grow. Powell has. Did he screw up before the U.N.? Yes. Has he endevoured to do the right thing since stepping down as Secretary of State? Yes. Do some here continue to carry a grudge? Yes, to their own detriment.
Powell was the on-the-ground commander for the first Iraq War and demonstrated tactical brilliance. He has the respect of military personnel world-wide. He also commands a great deal of respect for pre-Bush Republicans and conservatives.
When such a respectable conservative Republican publicly announces his support for Obama, publicly denounces the tactics of the McCain campaign and the current direction of the Republican Party, it makes a difference.
Please note the tone of discourse from Fox: lame attempts to discredit Powell. But don’t address the issues Powell raised. Fox proves Powell’s points about the McCain/Palin campaign.
October 19th, 2008 at 11:17 amThere should be no surprise to see Colin Powell SwiftBoated very soon for this endorsement’s decision he took by extreme Right wingers.
October 19th, 2008 at 11:29 amThe reason Powell’s endorsement of Obama is important is that McCain wanted it badly. Also it shoots down the no foreign policy experience the Republicans have been trying to use against Obama.
October 19th, 2008 at 11:34 amI wonder what Rush Limbaugh and Compay are thingking now.
October 19th, 2008 at 11:34 amPowell reasons for endorsing Obama are good even if we don’t respect him much. Especially the story of the young Muslim soldier dying and McCain saying Obama isn’t a Muslim he’s a “good Christian” to that crazy lady at his rally.
October 19th, 2008 at 11:39 amIolair…
Did he screw up before the U.N.?Yes.
He knew he was using rubbish to make Bush’s case, but what’s more he dramatized it. That wasn’t just some personal error in judgment; it was culpable participation in, and contribution to, falsehoods that enabled the Bush administration to conduct an illegal war.
Has he endevoured to do the right thing since stepping down as Secretary of State? Yes.
Like what? Has he contributed to the IAVA? Has he lobbied on behalf of veterans? Has he bought a soldier a new pair of legs? Has he engaged in one single act of contrition? No, just words, half of them self pitying.
October 19th, 2008 at 11:43 amI wonder what Rush Limbaugh and Company are thinking now.
They are probably thinking about the same thing they have been thinking about for the past six weeks and that is:
“What are we going to do after November 4 after our audiences shrink to that small number of our total listeners who are dead-enders. After all, we have had a lot of politically astute listeners who pumped up our Nielsen ratings because they were entertained, amused and encouraged about our desperate spinning and ranting. After the election, they will desert us and we going to have to make it on our own with those few brain-dead ditto-heads who look to us for suckling and validation.”
October 19th, 2008 at 11:46 amColin Powell endorsed Obama to Help Colin Powell!
Powell is a Neocon Imperialist who serves as an
operative for the Military Industrial Complex.
He returned to Vietnam as a major from 1968 to 1970, where he first served as the executive officer for the Americal Division (23rd Infantry Division), then as the assistant chief of staff of operations for the Americal Division. In that post, he was charged with investigating a detailed letter by Tom Glen (a soldier from the 11th Light Infantry Brigade), which backed up rumored allegations of the My Lai Massacre. Powell wrote: “In direct refutation of this portrayal is the fact that relations between American soldiers and the Vietnamese people are excellent.” Later, Powell’s assessment would be described as whitewashing the news of the massacre, and questions would continue to remain undisclosed to the public.
Throughout his career, both in and out of government, he has been perpetually connected to CIA drug smuggling operations.
His Son,Michael Powell is also a Neocon who destroyed the FCC
October 19th, 2008 at 11:48 amand Network News!
To those “undecided” voters who may think Powell is more than a lying, scheming Bush lackie, this may be a significant-enough endorsement to sway their vote. In which case it certainly can do nothing but help Obama. For those of us who know what a tool he has been for Republicans, it just doesn’t matter because we were going to vote for Obama anyway. Therefore, I’m glad it happened, but have no more respect for Powell than I had yesterday. Which was zippity do dah.
October 19th, 2008 at 11:50 ampete Says:
Is there any chance that Andrea Mitchel could get shipped to FAUX?
She needs just stay home and tend to hubby Greenmoldspan’s diaper changing.
October 19th, 2008 at 11:58 amIf a Neo-Con could be allowed to change his/her ways without getting rip-shredded for his/her past, perhaps more would do so….
October 19th, 2008 at 11:59 amThere was a time that Colin Powell was the most admired man in America. He could have been the first Black president–and he knows it.
He made what he probably thought of as ‘The Eisenhower Choice”, though, and paid for it. Because Eisenhower was a white guy.
He lent George W. Bush an awful lot of cred in the first days–people from the left and right were using him as evidence that W was a centrist. (That lasted about 11 days.)
They turned around and humiliated him, made him make a case he objected to in private before the UN, and cheerlead a war that was the antithesis of the Powell Doctrine.
I don’t think that Powell had no principles, but that he had been too long a soldier to disobey orders.
That’s bad enough, however. He should have shaken off that military instinct and acted like a leader. He dishonored himself and the nation.
Could he have stopped the rush to war, though? He wouldn’t have even slowed it down. He had no influence in the Administration whatsoever. He was a puppet. Had he resigned before the UN presentation, O’Reilly and Hannity and all of Fox news, as well as The New York Times and the WaPo and Joe Klein at Time would call it a ‘meltdown’ and shake their heads and Paul Wolfowitz would have given the speech and we wouldn’t have lost a day. We would have used it as ammunition but they wouldn’t be listening. He wouldn’t be on Meet The Press: there would have been a bunch of pundits talking about him. He would have been less important than Jim Jeffords.
There are a lot of people out there who still like Powell. They’re in a pocket that can still do some good: moderate Republicans who haven’t drunk the kool-aid but who balk at going over to Obama.
I don’t know how big that group is. I don’t know how much difference it’ll make. Powell’s announcement was perfectly timed, however: close enough to the election for people to remember, but not too close to be ‘last minute.’ It sinks the ‘Joe The Plumber’ dinghy, too.
I was outraged at Powell’s speech before the UN. However, I also welcome converts.
The real interesting part is what the McCain campaign does about it. They attack him at their peril.
October 19th, 2008 at 12:00 pm“This doesn’t come as a surprise.”
What a shame Chris Wallace didn’t ask a follow-up:
“General Powell, an advisor to the last three Republican presidents, has crossed party lines to endorse Senator Obama for president and you say it doesn’t surprise you? Why not?”
October 19th, 2008 at 12:03 pmKEVKEV IN APACHE JUNCTION Says:
And lest we forget, Powell was in charge of the supply arm of the Iran/Contra scam. His signature was on orders, commanding national guard armouries to send their TOW missile spare parts to Gen. Secord, who shipped ‘em to Iran. They literally emptied the shelves of spares, at his behest.
October 19th, 2008 at 12:08 pmI said the other day on hearing of the possibility of a Powell endorsement for Obama that it was just more Republican drama.
I was wrong. Powell has the stones… today.
I also said that it would make a difference with Christian right Republican voters who are authority driven and do as they are told. Was I right? We’ll see.
Depends now on who’s authority they listen to? Today, with this endorsement, Powell gets to see the abominable face, the viscous fiery beast in all its demonic rage that he has served all these years. The TRUE Republican party.
Note to Powell…Now’s a good time for those asbestos undies.
October 19th, 2008 at 12:16 pmAnd if there are any folks who think Powell would be even the slightest bit apologetic for his UN presentation, he lied again, saying it was the fault of bad intelligence supplied to the administration.
He’s the same weasel he ever was.
October 19th, 2008 at 12:24 pmOne Thousand Billion says:
“This does not come as a surprise”
What a shame Chris Wallace didn’t ask for a follow up:
“General Powell,an advisor to the last three Republican presidents, has crossed party lines to endorse Senator Obama for president and you say it does not surprise you? Why not?”

One Thousand:
“I wonder what Chris Wallace will be saying if Madeline Allbright endorsed McCain today on national television network”?!!!
October 19th, 2008 at 12:24 pmHe lost my respect with the UN speech on Iraqi WMDs, but this speech/interview/endorsement was really reasonable.
He might become a good RNC candidate in 2012 if the Republicans recover from the NeoCon idiocy in time.
October 19th, 2008 at 12:30 pmI don’t think this will be a game-changer, but Powell regained some of my respect for saying the things he said about McCain’s campaign and the Republican party’s self-immolation.
The point he made about the young Muslim man who gave his life for THIS COUNTRY, was very moving.
Well done, General Powell.
October 19th, 2008 at 12:32 pmI’m no fan of Colin Powell. No doubt he lacks in the integrity department. BUT his take down of the McLame/Pain campaign was brilliant. It was more succinct and to the point than that of most of Obama’s surrogates. He called the Ayers nonsense for what it is, pure demagogy and beautifully deconstructed all the other Rethuglican talking points. Learn his script well and apply it.
October 19th, 2008 at 12:33 pmDID ANYONE CATCH the statement Powell made about not needing 2 more conservative Justices on the Supreme Court???
October 19th, 2008 at 12:36 pmIolair,
If Powell will be crucified for anything — other than being a party traitor — it will be for his mention of the potential SCOTUS appointments.
October 19th, 2008 at 12:43 pmI am so proud of Colin Powell and his intelligent, insightful, authentic, graceful comments about Sen. Obama and our nation. He said what needed to be said and put a difference face, energy and impression on the term “All American. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
http://www.manifestobama.com/
October 19th, 2008 at 12:51 pmPowell has beat himself up over his U.N. presentation. That’s more than I can say for his counterparts architecting this disastrous invasion. Unless they stand to lose $$$$$, the pea-minded rubes refuse to revisit their decisions.
Welcome endorsement.
October 19th, 2008 at 1:03 pmWell this will be tough for McCain to overcome. Powell is a Republican respected by many on both sides, with vast experience in foreign policy… who says he will vote for Barack Obama.
October 19th, 2008 at 1:07 pmIn my opinion, Powell’s endorsement and well-deserved trashing of the McCain campaign tactics was effective and should be helpful with moderate undecided Republicans and Independents. That being said, this doesn’t NEARLY make up for his ‘unrepentant’ part in bringing this country to the straits that it is in today. And in this morning’s interview, he continued to reiterate the R’s old talking point about the Dem’ having gone along with Bush on the war, too. The difference is, Colin, that you knew the information that was fed to the U.N., the Congress and the American people was bullshite.
October 19th, 2008 at 1:09 pmMcCain:
“Me and Sarah are interested only in one endorsement ,and that’s Joe the plumber’s endorsement”
October 19th, 2008 at 1:09 pmHilarious how McCain tries to spin away from the fact that he and his attack poodle rant endlessly about Obama being unready to lead, while Republican General Colin Powell says he clearly is ready.
Quite a damper on the McCain/Palin message.
October 19th, 2008 at 1:09 pmIolair Says:
DID ANYONE CATCH the statement Powell made about not needing 2 more conservative Justices on the Supreme Court???
October 19th, 2008 at 12:36 pm
Yeah, that surprise the heck out of me, too.
October 19th, 2008 at 1:15 pmWith reference to Powell’s Supreme Court Statement….I believe Gen. Powell is on record as being Pro-Choice and Pro-Affirmative Action.
October 19th, 2008 at 1:22 pmPowell played a large part in the Bush/Cheney illegal invasion of Iraq. Powelll went so far to openly Lie to the United Nations and the American people for Bush. Bush/Cheney knew no one would believe them so Powell put his reputatiion on the line to make sure people would believe the lie. Yes after they didn’t need Powell anymore they kicked him out. But again he lied to the American people and said he knew nothing about the fake information, only to come back later and apologize again for lying and said he knew but could do nothing. Powell along with the rest of the Bush Administration are solely responsible for the death of thousands of soldiers.
Obama says he wants and honest Administration let’s see if he keeps his word. Powell nor Rice should be in Govenment. Powell needs a job so he will suck up to Obama even use the race card if necessary so will Connie Rice. Both Powell and Rice and the rest of the Bush Administration should be charged with War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity. As for Powell talking about a died soldier well he allowed that soldier and thousands of others to lie based on the lies he told. Powell had his chance to show what he was made and what he could do he followed Bush/Cheney knowing they were wrong and our troops deserve a much better leader then Powell.
October 19th, 2008 at 1:22 pm“Secretary of Defense, Colin Powell.” :)
October 19th, 2008 at 1:24 pmIt’s never too early to start polishing some apples.
Looks to me like he’s going this as sort of repentance. Seriously, he basically slammed his own party and the tactics they use. I think this is less important for us than it is about the message it sends to the Republicans and McCain.
October 19th, 2008 at 1:29 pm#77 Badger; That is correct.
October 19th, 2008 at 1:59 pmWhats been fun to watch is the wingnut reaction to this today. Its ranged from outrage to “so what?”. If Powell had endorsed McNumbNuts they’d have all over it like a cheap suit lauding his gravitas and statemanship and loyalty.
Big whoop Powell. First, he waits till the last two weeks of the election. Second, he’s a war criminial that should be in chains with the rest of the Bush cabal. Sorry Powell, anything positive you do from now till the time you die will never be redemption for sending over 4,000 Americans to die for the lies of your masters. Not to mention the millions of Iraqi lives affected by the war you sold to the world.
October 19th, 2008 at 2:10 pmThe nail in McInsane’s coffin, it’s over, but of course now the Reichwingers are going to attack Powell as Un-American…right Bachman?
October 19th, 2008 at 3:44 pmIts strange how Powell still enjoys this much respect in the mainstream considering his integral part in the Bush administrations lies and deceit before the Iraq war. His UN-speech was a complete disgrace
With that said I still welcome his endorsement and his criticism of McCains judgement, picking Sarah Palin and running this outrageous sleaze campaign. Hopefully it will convince independents and still undecideds not to vote for McCain
October 19th, 2008 at 3:44 pmIf Obama had any decency, he would’ve told Powell “No thanks“. But that’s a lot to expect from a panderer like Obama.
October 19th, 2008 at 3:44 pmI believe that Powell’s involvement in the Iraq War lie will never be lived down, and never should be. You lie down with vipers, expect to be bitten.
That said, this was a very clear and powerful endorsement of Obama and even more so an indictment of McCain and the GOP. There was no mincing of words and I especially liked his defense of the Muslim-American soldier, for too long Muslim/Islam have equalled terrorism and that is ridiculous and Un-American.
October 19th, 2008 at 4:01 pmColin Powell was steamrolled by Cheney and Rumsfeld. He was stuck between a rock and a hard place. He’s was NOT the Commander In Chief. Blaming Powell for his UN presentation would be like blaming Clinton for bombing an aspirin factory. He trusted George Tenet and the intelligence that Tenet presented to him.
I’m ecstatic that General Powell has endorsed Senator Obama!

Explain this thing to me, please…
Put a gun to your head, that is the only way you’ll be happy. There’s your explanation, loser.
Hey toilet face Matt, Is that all you can do is tell people who are smarter than yourself to commit suicide. After seeing you in action, watch your cyber-back, Bush AND Obama are watching you.
Now, Power Colon was involved directly with two major fabrications in US History, the Mei Lai Massacre and the Phony Anthrax Powder at the United Nations.
But then again, the odds are that Hussein Matt is either a plant, a stealth Republican, a Liberal who is stupid, or drinks too much.

Powell is a Neocon Imperialist who serves as an
operative for the Military Industrial Complex.
This whole election, as far as the Single Party with Two Illusionary Wings is concerned, is a Neocon fest. Powell endorsing Obama is like Ashcroft or Gonzalez endorsing McCain.

If you watch Colin Powell’s endorsement, you will see it consists of him explaining in great length why he personally will be voting for Obama.
And you’re saying… Obama should tell him No Thanks, to what exactly? His vote?
You are saying Obama has no decency, because he will not decline the vote of Colin Powell?
Does he even get that choice?
