McCain: Obama Campaign Has ‘Savaged’ Joe The Plumber

Today on Fox News Sunday, McCain said that “Joe the Plumber” was just “the average citizen” asking Obama a question, and he had the right to an answer. (Apparently Obama’s six-minute exchange with Joe was not extensive enough for McCain.) Continuing to hitch his campaign to Joe, McCain claimed the Obama campaign was “savaging” the Ohio citizen. Watch it:

Of course, when an average citizen asked Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) a question about Pakistan just weeks ago, McCain decried it as someone engaging in “gotcha journalism,” and said the question was merely a “gotcha soundbite.”

The idea that Obama has been “savaging” Joe is ludicrous. It was McCain who brought up Joe the Plumber — 21 times — in the final presidential debate. In fact, Joe himself said after the debate, “To be honest with you, I’m sure Obama didn’t want my name mentioned. … I wish they had talked about, you know, more important issues.”

What’s more, McCain continues to insist that Joe would face a tax hike under Obama’s plan. The truth is that Joe the Plumber — as he himself finally admitted — would see his taxes cut. As the New York Times noted, “neither his personal taxes nor those of the business where he works are likely to rise if Mr. Obama’s tax plan were to go into effect.”

McCain cited Sen. Joe Biden (D-DE) as someone who had “savaged” Joe. Biden merely pointed out that he didn’t know many plumbers who made $250,000 per year — a fair statement, considering that fewer than two percent of Americans make $250,000 or more.

Apparently to McCain, when a presidential candidate engages a voter in a 6-minute dialogue and when the media factchecks a claim about tax policy, that constitutes “savaging” a voter.

Update On ABC's "This Week" today, Newt Gingrich repeated the claim that Joe had been "savaged by the elite media."

Perhaps Joe should have been honest in the first place, and then he wouldn’t have faced the same scrutiny that everyone in the public forum now gets from those of us here in the ‘blogosphere’. The media is asleep at the wheel, so someone has to do their job for them. And it’s not like calling us ‘liberal’ as a perjorative is going to stop us from finding the truth.

What? ANOTHER ethics lecture from Newt Gingrich?

  9. Marie says:

    Joe has been savaged?!
He was a deceptive fame-seeker, or a plant. Easy and quick investigation proved that to be true.
It’s sad and stupid state of affairs to realize that asking questions to verify the veracity of assertions and claims is now referred to as “savaging.”

This is without a doubt the whiniest Republican ticket I have ever seen. Uncle McNutzi started this by wasting his last debate opportunity babbling incoherently about some guy his campaign read about on Drudge. Then Joe the freaking plumber(’s helper) gave voluntary interviews to every media outlet that asked. The fact that McPalin didn’t vet the guy and he turned out to be a little nutty is not the fault of the press or Obama. Stop whining about yet another bizarre strategy not working out.

    sigh… what to do….?

  21. Shayne says:

McCain worries about all the small business owners but he couldn’t be bothered finding one of them to shill for him. That’s because a true owner would know that chances of netting $250k are just about impossible. And that McCain’s health insurance plan is what will really cost us money.

  24. barfly says:

McCain’s trying to take a page from the Nixon playbook: expose an elite (or an elitism), who is attacking a regular-joe’s honor/background/religion/income, and act the victim, when the inevitable counter-punch is thrown.

Tricky was much more adept at it. He could get them to swing at him, by using proxies to push the message, and keep his prints off it.

I’m surprised Graham and Leiberman aren’t out there, making the case for him.

  25. Iolair says:

The Democratic Party should counter the “spread-the-wealth” line with “invest in Americans.”

Let’s face it, when you tax the super-wealthy and use that money to invest in education and health care, you are investing in the future of America and the well-being of her citizens. And I don’t think raising the tax rate on the top two percent of Americans is going to dissuade anyone from striving to reach that tax bracket.

  26. Shayne says:

That’s a good one Pete. Bachmann is just misunderstood. Yeah, that’s the ticket. I have to go donate to the other guy now.

  34. Mycelium says:

Joe is whining that he’s being picked on-”I’m just a plumber”. That pi$$es me off more than the fact McLame tried to use this idiot to bolster his campaign. Although I no longer make a living at the trade, I am very proud to have spent a long and arduous 5 years serving a plumbing apprenticeship and achieved journeyman status. No Joe…you are not a plumber and should be arrested for illegally installing plumbing. Next is from a few days ago but deserves repeating. (Although I know it’s not really the point of this forum.) BTW- I don’t know any real plumbers supporting McLame.

“Joe the Plumber” is a disgrace to the proud and highly skilled plumbing trade. People tend to poke fun at plumbers but have little recognition on their value to society. Understand that nearly every major plague and epidemic throughout history can be traced to poor sanitary conditions. The plumber’s motto is actually “the protectors of health of the nation” and you can add with that “the environment”. The plumbing trade is much more complex than the guy with his butt crack exposed showing up to fix your toilet. Plumbers not only work to provide safe drinking water and sanitary conditions they also do things like pipe in medical gasses and MRI’s in hospitals. There are obvious reasons for licensing.

Poor plumbing installations are a serious health risk and can lead to a plethora of health disorders. Licensing curbs this problem by necessity. I know of no state in which a license is not required to install plumbing. (Although a state registered apprentice may install plumbing under the auspice of a journeyman.) To be a plumbing contractor one must either be a master plumber or have a master under his/her employ in order to obtain permitting. Achieving journeyman plumber status requires 4-5 years training/schooling (pending state) followed by rigid state testing- add another two years with even more rigorous testing to achieve master status. One must admit that is a respectable amount of training and deserving of just that-respect!

This brings up “Joe the Clown Act” claiming he’s gonna be a “plumin contrakter”. What a joke…he probably wouldn’t make a pimple on a plumbers a$$. Truth is he’ll be out a job soon. The local plumbing inspector has surely gotten wind of him and his un-licensed contractor buddy illegally installing plumbing while claiming they don’t need no stinking license because its residential…false! Joe should and will wish he kept his mouth shut.

Nice move McLame. Causing more unemployment.

  35. unbelievable says:

And the beat goes on Says: I am so SICK of hearing about “Joe the Plumber!” Again, we have allowed how many days of what SHOULD have been discussion about serious campaign issues (like the economy)

Indirectly Joe has been responsible for exactly that – pointing out how Obama’s economic policies will be better for middle-class America, and how the only 2% of Americans making $250,000 will pay only a tiny bit more.

  36. Another Joe says:

If you saw the clip where this fake plumber confronted Obama, it is clear, he had nothing in mind except to be a menacing, intimidating presence.

I will grant him that right and I think Obama handled the initial confrontation well.

It was all a set-up from the get-go. He is not a licenced plumber. He is not in the yellow pages. He does not earn more than 250,000 dollars per year – at least not according to available information.

When they tried to have “joe the plumber” rallies in OH – only 5 morons showed up.

They are responsible for this failed campaign strategy and in typical repug fashion, they are blaming it on someone else.

Just like they blame their failed wars, the economy, the dysfunctional healthcare system, and the financial melt-down on everything but their own policies and 8 years of dur chimpfurher.

For the party that constantly talks “personal responsibility” to constantly deny any responsibility is laughable on its face.

  37. barfly says:

Another point that Gingrich made, was that Obama would, of necessity, scale back his plans for tax cuts and raises. His reasoning: the wealthy would only move their money off-shore.

Except, if Obama were to eliminate SSI’s income cap, they would have no choice but to contribute on every dollar earned in the country. There is no way they can shelter income, or defer taxes. In this way, the wealthy, who have been getting in essence a free ride all these years, would be encouraged to show more interest in how those funds were used.

well, Joe The Plumber highlights Obama’s economic plans, McCain’s incompetence and desperation and the GOP’s policy and rhetorical weaknesses.

This is the end-game. Keeping it simple at this point may well be best. I’m sure if we both posted a list of issues we’d like to have addressed in the public discourse–Iraq, DOJ, GITMO , Defense Spending, the SCOTUS, Energy, Education, Infrastructure, the Environment, Climate Change, HAVA, Ekection Reform, Domestic SPying, War Crimes, Contractors, Church and State, Gay Rights, Abortion, Health Care, everything really… all related and all important, so in the final 2-1/2 do we discuss all those and try to settle (as it were) all those issues in that time?

I suppose we could do that here, but the MSM is a simple beast and they will keep it simple. So I don’t know…is sort-of “is what it is” at the moment.

  43. pete says:

    Awesome post, Mycelium.

I might add that, in addition to sanitation issues, an ill-trained plumber can also screw up gas lines or electrical wiring. Add that to the obvious issues with leaks and an ill-trained plumber can destroy one’s home or even kill you.

An old acquaintance of mine thought he could install a new water heater, it blew up and he was lucky to escape with minor injuries.

  44. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

I still say that “Joe the Plumber” was a set-up. This guy is well known to a local conservative talk show host. I’m betting that the talk show host, when he found out that Obama was going to be in Joe’s neighborhood, called him and asked him to try to find Obama and ask that particular question. I’m also betting that that host arranged to have the camera there to get the encounter on tape, hoping they would get something that would embarrass Obama. McNasty keeps saying that Obama went to his home. That is a lie. Joe found Obama several blocks away from where he lived. And he had to lie about himself to make the question he asked plausible.

I’m betting that Joe is sorry he allowed them to talk him into it now that he has been proven to be a liar, tax cheat and unlicensed at the trade he is in. I say “too bad so sad”, he should have known better.

And the fact that McNasty and Palin are still using “Joe the Plumber” in their stump speeches, after McNasty apologized to Joe on Leno for exposing him to the press, speaks volumes about what a soulless person McNasty is.

  45. pete says:

    dbadass:

I’ll track it down for you, probably this evening. My own list of cetaceans is rather short. Gray whales, pilot whales, orca and pseudorca(?), and harbor porpoises.

I did have the opportunity to go on a whale watching excursion guided by the late, great, Ted Walker. We even happened upon a pair of “courting” grays on the way back to port. Unfortunately we were all out of film because we had already seen so many, plus pilot whales and porpoises. Doc Walker nearly pitched a fit because at that time, 1971, no one had ever filmed the mating behavior of grays.

  46. 5th Estate says:

Iolair Says: The Democratic Party should counter the “spread-the-wealth” line with “invest in Americans.”

Well said! That’s not just good political advice, it’s also good policy.
“Spread the Wealth” might appear to have an appeal to those who don’t have “wealth” BUT as it is rather predicated on income taxes it also suggests that the less wealthy have to give up some of their “wealth” for the greater good at a time when they need alll the wealth they can muster.

I’ve always held that when tax revenues are managed for the public benefit then taxes ( up to a point) are a great thing. Managed for the benefit of a few they are a bad thing! It;s how the taxes revenues are used that matters, not the fact of taxation itself.

This is all by design with the Republicalns. They have nothing to talk about as far as the issues are concerned so they have to manufacture false outrage to divert the public attention from the fact that they have nothing to say about the issues. It’s just another version of “look over there, there’s a shiny thing there”.

  58. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

The thing that convinces me that Joe was a plant is the fact that he asked a question that required him lying about himself to get an answer. But, since there isn’t anything about Joe’s life that wouldn’t improve under Obama, I guess he had to lie to get an answer that could be used against Obama.

    barfly Says:
Another point that Gingrich made, was that Obama would, of necessity, scale back his plans for tax cuts and raises. His reasoning: the wealthy would only move their money off-shore.

And Ginrich didn’t see anything wrong with that? The wealthy already move their money off-shore and a significant number of them pay zero income taxes through various loopholes in the tax codes. Hopefully Obama will close those holes and set up something that will make it very expensive for the wealthy to move their money off-shore.

  60. pete says:

I try not to think about how and why Psycho Shelly does/says things. It makes me feel dirty. But, I am encouraged that her extremism is at least being mentioned in the local media. She has powerful backers who, until now, have kept her insanity under the radar.

  61. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

Here’s what “Joe the Plumber” said on Mike Huckabee’s Fox show:

“You know, when you can’t ask a question of your leaders anymore, that gets scary,” he said.

It only got scary because he agreed to allow himself to be used by the McCain campaign. If they hadn’t used him, no one would have every known who “Joe the Plumber” really is. He has no one to blame but himself. Naturally Huckabee didn’t point that out to him.

  62. 5th Estate says:

    mycelium and Pete….

I’ve 15 years experience in the custom renovation biz ( as a cabinetmaker) and thus worked with many trades. Plumbing is a dirty and taxing job. Aspects of it look simple enough but to be a licensed plumber is to be an engineer. Ive done some ’serious’ plumbing myself from having observed professionals, but for the final connections ( and to satisfy inspections and the CO) I’ve always had a licensed plumber make the final connections (and add the traps and vents I suspected might be needed but didn;t know where to place). 4 hours work on the professional’s plumbers part at $150 was money well spent for the necessary expertise.

So called “manual” trades are vastly undervalued in this predominantly service society.

  63. pete says:

  72. Mycelium says:

    Thanks Pete-5th Estate.

In addition to my last post- I have many friends whom became plumbing contractors. Not one of them nets anywhere near $250k.

Sorry but I have to rant a little…

The only reason any skilled tradesman I’ve ever known supported the GOP is primarily because the NRA was extremely successful in convincing them that the dems were going to take their hunting rifles from them. That coupled with gay issues dems seem to champion…nothing against gays…but the issue makes many uncomfortable and that’s why Rove et al use it. The phony GOP “values” such as “God and Country” has won many over too. This comes from the experience of having worked with literally thousands of tradesmen since Reagan.

A little about unions. My comments relate to my experience, which lies solely with Building Tradesmen. (Plumbers/piping trades, Ironworkers, Electricians, Boilermakers, etc.) You know…the people who at least used to build America…whom suffer when factories are built overseas and plants close here. Say what you want about unions but they (did) provide “checks and balances” to corporate America. The powers that be have successfully demonized unions to the point where they are nearly irrelevant. When was the last time you heard a positive story about unions? But the truth is- if you are “Joe six-pack” and not a union member you probably don’t have health insurance worth having and you surely do not have a pension plan for retirement. (It’s obvious 401k’s cant be trusted.) Once upon a time non-union labor benefited immensely from strong unions because employers had to offer benefits to retain labor…once upon a time. IMHO, Organized labor is a key to revitalizing America. (Want a positive story about unions? Check out the UA’s (plumbers, pipefitters, sprinklerfitters) Helmets to Hardhats program offered to returning veterans.)

One of my attractions to TP many years ago is that it is/was a Progressive web site. (I’ve been around since before Ryan Neat used to spank MA all over these forums if anyone else has been around that long.) Hate is too kind a word for my feelings of BushCo but I have no love for the Democratic party either. Hard to argue that the dems were more than complacent in selling the working man down the road. The Clinton administration embraced the GOP initiated NAFTA as if it were its own. That was the beginning of the end of middle class America. (GATT and others provided additional daggers.)

I have always voted democrat but I must admit the vote was probably more anti-republican. The only time unions hear from democrats is election time when they pay lip service to what they’re going to do for the “working man”. Then they consistently vote to sell union interests down the road. I’m not sure “Steve the Steamfitter” really has a party. Which leads to why I support Obama.

I’ve had enough of the political status quo. Enough of the Bushes and the Clintons for that matter. I can only hope Obama represents the change I’m personally looking for. I hope the drive towards energy independence and new technologies produced domestically are sincere. Manufacturing is the key to real wealth for everyone- we’re seeing psudo-wealth explode before our very eyes. Americas crumbling infrastructure needs to be addressed also. After all- who builds America? It’s time for Made in America to mean something again. Baring “shenanigans” Obama will win this election. I’ll be patient because I understand change doesn’t happen overnight… but I hope he doesn’t let me down.

“Joe the plumber” is being “savaged”? You mean the same “Joe the plumber” who admitted that he would benefit from Obama’s tax plan? Say it ain’t so, Joe. Say it ain’t so.

    .

So the McPalin Campaign whored Joe the plumber around and then decries, how dare the media and Obama for noticing?

In Ohio Swing, McCain Again Hails ‘Joe the Plumber’
Washington Post – 4 hours ago

By Michael Abramowitz WESTERVILLE, Ohio — Barack Obama may have Colin Powell in his corner, but John McCain still has Joe the Plumber.

    ah hahahahaha!

  76. nofltwlt says:

McCain is like Bush in one more aspect, every seemingly cleaver thing he does, such as creating a “Joe Plumber”, turns to shit.

It is McCain who savaged “Joe Plumber” just as he did Paling; these people are the creation of a failed McCain attempt to promote his popularity – ain’t workin John.

  77. DallasNE says:

Interesting that McCain blames Obama for exposing Joe the Plummer’s tax and license problems when Joe the Plummer is himself blaming the media for digging into his past. Of course, the only reason the media had an interest was because McCain injected Joe the Plummer into the last debate 21 different times. McCain has only himself to blame for for Joe being exposed for his far right activism (refusing to pay his taxes and refusing to get a plummers license from the State).

I know this thread is probably dead but this is hilarious! Sounds like Joe’s gonna get his a$$ kicked to boot! I know some folks from Local 50 and they’re about as tough and willing to dole out an a$$-kickin’ as you can get. They ain’t gonna like what Joe pulled…
