Rep. Hayes: ‘Liberals Hate Real Americans That Work And Achieve And Believe In God’

hayescheney.jpg On Saturday, Republican North Carolina Reps. Patrick McHenry and Robin Hayes warmed up the crowd at a rally for Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) by throwing red meat to the right-wing audience. McHenry called the event the “biggest crowd John McCain has gotten in North Carolina” and said that voters had a critical choice between McCain and Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) this election. Someone in the audience yelled out, “It’s like black and white” to loud laughter. McHenry let the remark pass.

When it was his turn to speak, Hayes accused liberals of hating “real Americans”:

He [McHenry] yielded the microphone to Representative Robin Hayes, who prefaced his comments by saying it was important to “make sure we don’t say something stupid, make sure we don’t say something we don’t mean.” Republicans, he reminded the crowd, were kind people. Plus, he added, the liberal media had shown itself eager to distort such remarks. With the crowd duly chastened and put on best behavior, he accused Obama of “inciting class warfare” and said that “liberals hate real Americans that work and achieve and believe in God.”

This meme has been picking up steam amongst the right wing in recent weeks. Most prominently, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) exploded on Friday and said that liberals were “anti-American.” The McCain campaign and its conservative allies have also been blasting progressive ideas as “socialist” or “Marxist.”

Note that Hayes is the same congressman who, in 2006, said:

Stability in Iraq ultimately depends on spreading the message of Jesus Christ, the message of peace on earth, good will towards men. Everything depends on everyone learning about the birth of the Savior.

In 2005, he also insisted that “Saddam Hussein and people like him were very much involved in 9/11.” When he was told that no investigation found any link between Saddam and 9/11, Hayes responded, “I’m sorry, but you must have looked in the wrong places.”

Update Politico spoke with Hayes's spokesperson, who denied that the congressman ever made the statements. NY Observer reporter Jason Horowitz, who originally reported on Hayes's comments, stands behind his story: "I was there. That’s what I heard. I was taking notes while he was talking."

Um…I happen to work, I achieve, and I believe in God. I’m also a liberal. Does this mean I’m supposed to hate myself?

  3. shoeless says:

Yeah, Robin Hayes had to work real hard to get where he is.

Hayes owns a hosiery mill in Mount Pleasant, North Carolina. His parents were Robert Griffith Hayes, Jr. (October 21, 1907 – November 12, 1998) and Mariam Winslow Cannon (January 22, 1916 – August 4, 2007), daughter of textile magnate Charles Albert Cannon.

Charles Albert Cannon was the son of James William Cannon and president of the Cannon Mills Company from the 1920’s to the 1960’s.

Cannon Mills manufacturing plants were located mainly in Kannapolis, North Carolina (from the Greek for city of looms) and Concord, North Carolina.

There were multiple plants employing thousands of people during this time, running three shifts and producing sheets and towels.

  9. Wayne A. Schneider says:

Stability in Iraq ultimately depends on spreading the message of Jesus Christ, the message of peace on earth, good will towards men. Everything depends on everyone learning about the birth of the Savior.

I’m no expert on religion, but I’m pretty sure that a disbelief in Jesus as their Savior is not what’s fueling the hostility there.

In 2005, he also insisted that “Saddam Hussein and people like him were very much involved in 9/11.” When he was told that no investigation found any link between Saddam and 9/11, Hayes responded, “I’m sorry, but you must have looked in the wrong places.”

Oh, so he was convinced that Saddam was involved in 9/11, and his only proof is that we haven’t proved him wrong. Of course, all the searching in the world by motivated people couldn’t prove a link, and these were Bush people, too. Why don’t you tell us, Mr. Hayes, where the “right places” to look are.

Liberals are the new Jews now. Same kinds of rhetoric spewed in Nazi Germany. See: new rules put in place for FBI. See: U.S. detention center contracts given to Blackwater to build and staff facilities for illegal immigration purposes and for other purposes. See: Bush’s Executive orders regarding suspension of habeus corpus and martial law. Many other examples of where this is heading if it isn’t stopped, and stopped soon.

    Be alert.

Too many are filthy rich. I think it’s the scale of your federation. It’s just far too big, for people to care about someone else’s problems. Holland is a socialist state (we don’t think it is, but from your point of view I understand you don’t agree with us) and we have almost no poverty, health care has been dealt with in the 1950’s, if you need a doctor / hospital, he / it’s right around the corner waiting for you, all costs covered. I have 50 days (paid) vacation a year, a month’s salary extra to spend in that vacation, schools are ok, if you don’t have the money to go to any university of your choice the government will lend it to you, hallelujah, this is all great. And you know what? The U.S.A. made it possible by getting us up on our feet again after wwII, in the late 40’s and early 50’s. Your country did a great job helping us. We are still grateful.

Now please help yourself. We are too small and unimportant to do the job for you. Just get out the vote for Obama. He’s awsome. Keep him alive.

  43. impeachcheneythenbush says:

Dutch, thanks for your comments. I was born and raised in the U.S. 61 years ago, and I continue to be mystified by a country which is so rich and powerful, yet has a health care system that can result in bankruptcy and in some cases, death, for those either uninsured or under insured. Where the bright and capable kids can’t go to college without accumulating huge debt to start their young lives out with. Where individuals, and increasingly often, families, live on the streets or in their car. Where the elderly, especially, sometimes die in the winter or the summer because their electricity has been turned off, or they no longer afford oil to heat their homes (in the Northeast especially).

And I will tell you…it pisses me off mightedly when I hear the Right claim we are a “Christian nation.” When I hear the Right claiming that any attempt to help people (the community) by providing assistance is “socialism,” but providing the same assistance, in a MUCH larger amount, to corporations, including the banks now, is all about “growing jobs,” or “saving the economy,” or whatever statement seems believable. When cutting taxes that benefit the top 1-5% is “encouraging innovation and growth,” but cutting taxes for the middle class is seen as “socialism,” and “Robin Hood welfare.” And to top it off, those who protest these unjust and unfair policies are then called “anti-American.”

I am an American, who loves the country that was MEANT to be, not what I see now and what we’ve become. I love the country that could have been that “shining light upon the hill.” And I absolutely despise those and their policies that have distorted and destroyed that promise. And there’s nothing idealistic about this administration’s desire to “spread democracy around the world.” This country lost the real vision of the hope for the founding of this country long ago. The democracy that we try to spread is poisonous, and if you simply look at our most recent elections, it’s quite clear. If you look at the way our Congress has performed (or non-performed), it’s quite clear.

  44. pete says:

Thank you for the perspective, Dutch4BHO. Your English is better than most of us. And we, as a nation, need to realize that we depend on the goodwill of the rest of the world for our survival. Alas, the people currently in charge fail to acknowledge that to the ruin of all.

This is the first election in the USA where their is one visable black candidate and one who looks white but has many black close relatives. So it’s no so much about black or white as you might think. Many Americans are looking into their DNA to find who their related to but John McCain can name all his family back to Slavery and even today as with Lillian McCain who is much darker then Obama. I know John McCain doesn’t want to admit his family roots because Cindy wouldn’t want them to visit the ranch or any of those 7 homes they own.

Uh, Mr. Hayes, how about your Republican gems who screamed, yelled, intimidated, & terrorized Americans trying to exercise their freedom to vote? Those Repubs truly showed their hatred of Americans & American freedoms. What are you going to do about those Republican hate-mongers? Hmm? And really, this Repub garbage about “real Americans”– we hope “real Americans” are caring, respectful of others, inclusive, and not threatening towards others. Over the last few weeks, Republicans, especially some McCain/Palin supporters, have certainly been far from that definition- they’ve been hateful, racist, intimidating, & violent. 55. wizard2000 says:

After watching eight years of the Bush/Cheney administration thumbing its nose at the U.S. Constitution, the Bill of Rights and the “rule of law” in our great nation, I have a hard time believing anything that Rep. Robbing Hayes has to say about anything.

I could list all the abuses of power of the Bush/Cheney administration, but the idea that any of these Republicans are Christian in the Bush/Cheney executive branch is laughable. Nothing that any of these Republican “Christians” have done over the past eight years even remotely looks like anything Jesus Christ would have endorsed doing. Starting wars. Lying. Cheating. Stealing. Crony capitalism. Showing favoritism toward right-wingers, while freezing out liberals, you know, like Jesus Christ.

In fact, if Jesus were to return before January of next year, I’m certain he would make it his top priority to go to the White House and kick all the money-lenders out, grabbing Bush and Cheney by the scruffs of their necks and throwing them out into the Rose Garden (of course, Secret Service agents would wrestle Jesus Christ to the ground before this could happen, and probably taser him into submission).

Jesus Christ knew hypocrits when he met them, and the Republicans are hypocrits, especially those who claim to be followers of his. Republican Christians often repeat a right-wing meme that America is a “Christian nation.” Well, all I can say to these Republican “Christians” is “prove it.” How many millions of American children have gone to bed hungry each night because of pro-wealthy, anti-poor Republican policies over the past eight years, with the present Republican-created economic crisis leading to even more hungry children? How many children over in Iraq have died or been severely injured or, after losing their parents, ended up selling their bodies for food out on some street corner, because the self-proclaimed “Christians” in the Bush/Cheney White House launched an unprovoked, preemptive war against Iraq in 2003?

I’m not fooled by Republican “Christians.” I’m certain Jesus Christ wouldn’t be fooled either.

This country has been slowly evolving into that which we have sacrificed countless lives opposing–a militant nation with an agenda driven by religious extremists who promote freedom of thought only so long as it does not conflict with their own ideas. Sound familiar? We have become the enemy.

Ever since the 1960’s, the GOP consistently has been, and will always be, the party of exclusion, the party that attempts to diminish those who look different than themselves, pray to a different deity, or follow a different lifestyle. They are the party that uses fear and hatred as a weapon to intimidate any who do not share their points of view.

It is time for a fresh perspective, a new philosophy of America’s place in the world. It can no longer be us versus them at all costs; the world is far too small for such a narrow-minded point of view.

It is time to embrace those who are different than ourselves and accept them for who they are–it would be the “christian” thing to do.

  69. nofltwlt says:

Prior to the 2000 presidential election I was pretty much apolitical, thinking that both parties had problems and that most politicians have lost sight of what and who they are to represent. This changed when Bush43 ascended to the presidency with the help of Katherine Harris, Anton Scalia, voter intimidation, voter nullification and voter caging. These people and these tactics were all directed at giving Bush and republican candidates an undeserved upper hand.

Action that deprives or redirects the vote of even one citizen represents the most heinous crime imaginable in a democracy. Those who participated in these actions such as Ken Blackwell and Tim Griffin deserve jail time.

Karl Rove, Tom Delay, Newt Gingrich and others publicly advocate “a permanent republican majority”. Please understand what this means; it means loss of personal freedom and an atmosphere where group-think replaces rational thought. Lack of rational thought, along with nefarious/evil tactics of Cheney and the neocons, got us into the mess we are in. Instead of a “chicken in every pot” we now have a crony in every position, a microphone in every room, a tap on every phone and a lobbyist running every republican campaign.

Americans dodged a bullet in 2006 when we voted to renounce GOP and neocon fear mongering. November 4th represents another opportunity to retain our freedom by electing Barack Obama. Our choice is between a constitutional scholar with a track record of supporting those who are not in the very highest income bracket or, a “C” student proud of his lack of discipline – sound familiar?

I have come to realize that Democrats/liberals care about the things that should be the focus of well intentioned people – not so much for the other side. For those of you who don’t understand what I just said, Dems are better people the Repubs.

  70. Progressive Veteran says:

I work my ass off as an engineer and I gave 7 years of my life to the US military.

I’m a liberal Mr. Hayes, and I’m writing here to thank you for the utmost respect you’re giving the citizens of the US (little sarcasm going on there). I would also like to state that I’m sorry, but you must have the term “American” all mixed up. You see, we care about the constitution, civil liberties, and equality; things the Republican party has never really been in touch with.

  71. jpopphan says:

“Republicans, he reminded the crowd, were kind people.”

Oh, I have to call shenanigans on that one.

I am sure that some Republicans are decent, kind people – and I have a few friends who are that way – but the policies promoted by the GOP and the tactics used in every election can hardly be called “kind”.

The GOP tries to pass itself off as a populist party during election years, but once in power they return to being the party of big business. “Kind” people do not allow their political events to turn into a hate festival directed at the opposition party. “Kind” people do not stand by and say nothing when someone screams out that the opposition candidate is a “terrorist” or should be killed.

“Kind” people do not stand by while Karl Rove smears a little girl, using the color of her skin as a means of smearing a fellow Republican. “Kind” people do not cheat and lie and steal just to win an election.

“Kind” people have no home in the GOP. That’s why most of us kind, hard-working people are Democrats.

  72. lefty says:

All I have to say is this:

If any of you Republicans out there have the nerve to say “Real American” in earshot of me prepare to have your nose bloodied and several ribs broken. You’re asking for the ass kicking of a lifetime.

    F%@K YOU!!!!!

  73. unbelievable says:

Thanks for remindng me why American is a SECULAR nation.

The Founding Fathers had enough of the religious attitudes.

When will the rest of us?

  74. 1984 says:

You gentlemen who think you have a mission
To purge us of the seven deadly sins
Should first sort out the basic food position
Then start your preaching, that’s where it begins
You lot who preach restraint and watch your waist as well
Should learn, for once, the way the world is run
However much you twist or whatever lies that you tell
Food is the first thing, morals follow on

Good luck getting throught that eye of the needle..

  75. jessicaatEPIC says:

When it comes to Iraq, both candidates are falling short of addressing the humanitarian crisis that has displaced 5 million Iraqis and threatens to destabilize the entire region. On this both of the candidates are silent, yet we need sound, honest and clear policies for the best way forward and this must include the humanitarian dimension. This Friday, October 24th, Rutgers School of Law will host a symposium to discuss, inform and encourage the development of a peaceful, sustainable strategy in Iraq. 76. AllenAllen says:

    He apologized.

NC Lawmaker: Comment on liberals was wrong
    Associated Press – October 21, 2008 3:23 PM ET

I accept the apology but still say: Vote these Taliban out! They are insulting over 1/2 of US citizens, judging by the popular vote in the last two elections!

  77. zogtheobvious says:

The radicals have hijacked the Republican Party, and now they’re trying to hijack the very definition of American. And even though he apologized, it’s too late – the idea has been planted – as is ALWAYS the motive whenever one of these ‘wingers makes one of their unAmerican statements before offering up their meaningless apologies. It’s like the ol’ lawyer tactic where they make a statement, knowing full well that the opponent is going to yell “objection!” The lawyer quickly states “withdrawn” before the judge can rebuke him. The lawyer is fully aware that the idea is now planted in the jury…. which was the point all along.

  78. MLW says:

It’s time to stop the hateful rhetoric. Donate to his opponent.

    .

    Dear Representative Robin Hayes(R),

I work hard for my money, real hard for my money…
… And you still can’t treat me right.

I pray hard for that money, real hard for that money…
… And you still won’t treat me right.

Yet, you’ve screwed me well for some money, to hell for your money…
… I pray your god will treat you right!

    .

  80. Max-1 says:

    AllenAllen,
    I don’t care that he “apologized”…
… He spoke it because he misspoke it?

Deep apologies would include a deep understanding as to why it was wrong…
    … IN THE FIRST PLACE!

Apology or not, he is supposed to be above the Frey or, in this case, the fringe. Instead he “CHOSE” to lower himself to the lowest common denominator among the crowd; The “base” instinct of FEAR and HATE. There is no way he can parse it any other way. He can, though, denounce himself…

    .

  81. CinNC says:

I didn’t think it could ever get more embarassing than Jesse Helms!!!!
