Cartoonist depicts Colin Powell as Benedict Arnold in blackface.

A new cartoon by syndicated cartoonist Gordon Campbell hits Gen. Colin Powell for endorsing Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL). The cartoon shows a picture of Revolutionary War general Benedict Arnold — who infamously committed one of U.S. history’s greatest acts of treason — in blackface, followed by the line: “Benedict Powell…Race Patriot“:

benedict-powell.jpg

Politicker reports Campbell also stated that Powell “wishes to see someone who looks like himself in the White House.” Similarly, Rush Limbaugh is now saying that Powell endorsed Obama only because they are both African-American, and a prominent Maine GOP activist claimed, “If Obama was a white man, Powell would not have made the endorsement.”

It was only a matter of time before the wingnuts demonized Powell and used the “only because he’s black” as their primary rationalization for Powell’s whole hearted rejection of all things McCain.

Keep fannin’ those fires of hatred, bigotry and racism, GOPers! “Real” America needs to see how low you’ve sunk.

    PEACE

  2. 5th Estate says:

    Typically racist GOP bullshit!

Anyone with a shred of common sense knows that Powell is endorsing Obama because they have the same kind of genitals!

  3. McWars says:

It’s time for agencies who usually rate financial institutions, states and localities to downgrade the GOP to junk status. Then we should move to change “GOP” to MOB and seek their proper placement as a washed-up third party. The GOP has no business being a major party at this point and participating in debates on the major networks.

  4. Zooey says:

Powell had to know this was coming.

It’s horrendous, just the same. People used to do this sort of thing in private — now it’s out there are all to see.

What gets me is that they seem to be so proud of their racism and ignorance.

  5. DRxJ says:

Welp, let the flood gates of hate and bigotry open!
For Rush, and Campbell, and trolls galore, remember, it was Powell who was thrown under the GOP bus after 2004 for not following lock and step with this administration.
Powell has alot to atone for, but he did realize the error of his ways.
And he was crucified by his own party.

This is NOT about race, but about change.
Something the right can never comprehend.
It’s about the people, the citizens, the country.
It is NOT about the rich getting richer, and more power to the powerful.
8 years out of touch is 8 years too many!

    OBAMA/BIDEN 2008!!!

  14. tom says:

I would say it is time for well-respected white republicans to begin stepping up to the plate on this one. There are many of them, I am sure, who are equally dejected about the utter implosion of the republican party and its crash into cynical, irresponsible, negative and divisive demagoguery.

I agree that Powell probably knew the “it’s because he’s black” BS would surface. Actually, that makes his endorsement all the more compelling. If he were a pragmatist and concerned only with himself, he would have refrained from endorsing anyone.

Chuck Hagel, where are you? It is time for you to get this ball rolling!

  15. greenpagan says:

I guess they were just flaming us…

Now someone should flame them with a cartoon showing Bill Ayers burning a Confederate Flag.

Come on. We all know what the hell the opposition to Obama is all about at its core. It’s racism but it’s not only racism.

I can say no more in this venue.

All anyone had to do was to look at Palin the wrong way and the faux outrage became, “Obama, his supporters and Dems are sexist!”

But the MSM and Dems allow the Rupubs to get away with racism and sexism whenever it does not politically benefit them.

The Dem leaders need to stand up to this just as vigorously as the Netroots do.

  19. DvlsAdvocat says:

The sweet irony of their reaction is that it is a perfect example of the rhetoric and divisiveness that Powell used as part of his rationale for choosing Obama.

    Great job you friggin’ idiots!

  20. Marie says:

Because the racist pea-brains cannot fathom anyone not accepting their “truth” they project that no one would not consider race in important matters. They view everything through their bigoted prism, so they believe everyone else does also.

  22. McWars says:

As Powell stated on MTP, if the only factor in making his endorsement was race, he would have reached his decision 16 months ago.

People accuse African Americans of voting solely on race, but it’s healthy and normal, whether you’re republican, independent or democrat, to vote for the whitest skin on the ticket just to maintain tradition — and openly make that intention known.

The Racism of the image is more than a little shocking.

Soooo, Gen. Powell is “Benedict Powell…Race Patriot” simply for having an independent mind and endorsing Sen. Obama?

NICE! Me, I think he explained his selection succinctly. Imagery like that says a lot about the cartoonist.

  26. 5th Estate says:

Zooey: People used to do this sort of thing in private — now it’s out there are all to see.

Well here’s something to think about.

The Dems hammered the Republicans by 3-1 on average in the caucuses and primaries.
Obama has beaten McCain in new voter registrations by wide margins.
Obama is scoring very well with Independents.
A minority of Clinton supporters will vote against or not at all.

So, the odds are good that the popular vote will be significantly in favor of Obama, which will send a significant message about racial attitudes.

That would put the spotlight on racists. The GOP’s dependence on, and exploitation of, racism will be very well illuminated.

Of course that won’t mean the ‘end of racism’ but there can be some considerable good that may come out of this national “dialog” .

  27. The Dogfather says:

Well, if that’s the way it’s gonna be…

The only reason Rush Limbaugh has endorsed McCain is that he and McCain’s wife both have a history of drug abuse.

The only reason Newt Gingrich has endorsed McCain is that they both dumped their first wives after these women became inconvenient to their husbands’ lust for power.

The only reason George W. Bush has endorsed McCain is because McCain’s VP pick makes W look like Einstein.

The only reason Joe the Plumber has endorsed McCain is because…oh wait — his name’s not Joe, and he’s not a plumber…

This could go on and on, but of course it won’t — because we’re not like that in America, dammit…

Powell’s first mistake was thinking that republicans shared his values. Then he lived it with them for most of his life.

He’s really just another lee attwater or george wallace.

It is funny to note that you never hear of a deathbed conversion or renouncement of life activities from progressives. It only comes from the right who know they are doing wrong and do it anyway.

Racism is a barrier the GOP will never overcome. They may have a black secretary of state like Colin Powell first, then Condoleeza Rice, a front or cover to make people think they are not racist. Deep inside they are extremely racist.

It’s obvious the GOPers care nothing about the repercussions of their actions. Black/white relations have been on an uneasy calm since the 60’ s-70’s but that could change if the race baiting keeps up. I was very young when the 67 Detroit race riots occurred but I grew up with the aftermath…not good but relatively peaceful. Prejudice and hatered work both ways among the ignorant and there is certainly no lack of ignorance out there. Are the GOP tactics enough to reignite racial tensions to the point of “spill-over”? Lets hope not. (I’ve heard rumors of riot gear arriving in major cities however.)

I’m sure many of you caught Bill Mahers last show. Bernie Sanders made an excellent observation stating something along the lines of “there are millions of people who believe an Arab terrorist will inherit the White House if Obama wins”. Sad but true. I can’t imagine what might be going through the heads of the very ignorant. Some of my hope lies in Obamas ability to bring the country together.

BTW- As I write this I’m listening to Palin screech her way through a speech- even bringing up “Joe the disgraced plumbers helper” a number of times. Like listening to nails on a chalkboard. This followed a McLame rant…all to the chorus of-USA,USA,USA…

BTW- on the burned-out topic of Joe. Joe will probably be getting a physical a$$ kicking atop his verbal one sometime in the future. Those Local 50 boys aren’t gonna like what Joe pulled. That cannot break that in which they have been endoctrinated through rearing and fear.

The notion that Colin Powell would endorse Obama because he is black is a preview from those that hate Americans of difference as a functionary method to deal and resolve issues.

    Most of all…

If Rush feels Powell endorsed Obama because Obama is Black,

Rush might consider Powell endorsed the white half of Obama?
    ******************************************************

Maybe then Rush and his ilk can sleep at night.

  68. BrianFL says:

The reality is, if Obama was white, this contest would not be close. Look at how much damage the Republican Party has done. Imagine if it was Obama who had left his first wife when she wasn’t as thin as he liked? Imagine if it was Obama whose wife was a former longtime drug addict who stole drugs from her own charity? Imagine if it was Obama who finished near the bottom of his Naval Academy class, and McCain who finished with high honors from Columbia and Harvard Law.

What if it was the black candidate who acted so erratic and strange (suspended his campaign, then not actually suspending it, almost calling off the first debate, flip-flopping on his positions almost daily, etc.), especially in the debates, and it was the white candidate who was calm, collected, and thoughtful. The white candidate would probably be leading by more than 25%.

That’s why it amazes me that the right-wingers pretend like the guy with the black skin has it so easy. It’s clear Obama has had to work even harder to gain respect because of his skin tone. He’s had to be far and away more intelligent and reasonable in order to gain support from many people.

Yes, I’d like to see a woman in the White House someday, even as veep. But she must be someone who is qualified for the office and who will make the country a better place.

If I require more from a candidate than genitalia that matches mine, is it too far-fetched to believe that Colin Powell might require more from a candidate than skin color that matches his? Obama happens to be the better candidate, regardless of ethnicity. Powell is just going with the obvious here.

There are white conservatives backing Obama also, so what reasoning do you have for that? We don’t question when a white man endorses another white man. I have the greatest respect for Colon Powell and all the reasons he gave were very sound and well thought out. How can anyone earning $35,000 or less possibly vote for McCain? You will get very little income tax back, if you are lucky enough to have health insurance, it will be taxed and in turn raise your premiums. He has said very little about affordable education, and he will try to stay in Iraq until he dies. He offers me nothing. Last but not least, he and his partner will keep racism alive and does not care about anyone making less than $250,000 a year. He has never lived in my world!!
