Giuliani: ‘God Forbid Somebody Would Do Some Reporting On Barack Obama’s Use Of Drugs’

On Saturday, the New York Times published an investigative piece on Cindy McCain that delved into, among other things, her past addiction to painkillers. Responding with outrage, the McCain campaign called the article “gutter journalism at its worst” and released a pre-publication letter from McCain lawyer John Dowd that invoked Sen. Barack Obama’s youthful drug use:

It is worth noting that you have not employed your investigative assets looking into Michelle Obama. You have not tried to find Barack Obama’s drug dealer that he wrote about in his book, Dreams of My Father. Nor have you interviewed his poor relatives in Kenya and determined why Barack Obama has not rescued them. Thus, there is a terrific lack of balance here.

In an interview with Fox News today, former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani continued the assault on the Times, claiming that the paper had unbalanced coverage of the two candidates and that “there shouldn’t be two different rules for Republicans and Democrats.” Giuliani, unprompted, also brought up Obama’s past drug use:

GIULIANI: You can’t even — you can’t even raise these issues. And, you know, God forbid somebody would do some reporting on Barack Obama’s use of drugs. I guess that was the point that Mrs. McCain’s lawyer made.

After raising the issue of drugs, however, Giuliani then claimed, “I don’t think the Time[s] should” report on Obama’s drug use. Watch it:

Giuliani accused the Times of “not reading their own newspaper” when they claim to have balanced coverage. But God forbid that Giuliani actually read the Times, considering that the paper has already investigated Obama’s past drug use. In February 2008, the paper published an article that relied on “three dozen interviews” and found that to his friends and associates, Obama “did not appear to be grappling with any drug problems and seemed to dabble only with marijuana.”

Transcript:

KELLY: You know, the Times has come out saying, look, we’ve reported vigorously on the backgrounds of both candidates.

GIULIANI: Yeah, like heck they have.

KELLY: And those who influence them, including both prospective first ladies. They claim that they’ve about just as tough on Michelle Obama.

GIULIANI: Well, they’re living — they’re living in their own bubble if they think that. I mean, in fact, they — it’s even worse than that. If you raise legitimate issues about Barack Obama, his connection with Ayers, his connection with Reverend Wright, his connection with Rezko who bought the house for him and went off to jail — you’re accused of being some kind of a mean, vicious, narrow- minded person.

You can’t even — you can’t even raise these issues. And, you know, God forbid somebody would do some reporting on Barack Obama’s use of drugs. I guess that was the point that Mrs. McCain’s lawyer made.

KELLY: Right. Mrs. McCain’s lawyer wrote to the Times saying — just so our viewers know — it’s worth noting that you’ve not employed your investigative assets looking into Michelle Obama. You have not tried to find Barack Obama’s drug dealer that he wrote about having in his book, Dreams of My Father, nor have you interviewed his poor relatives in Kenya, et cetera.

GIULIANI: Now, I don’t think the Time should do that. I think, you know, the presidential campaigns have gotten bad enough. They shouldn’t do that.

But if they’re not going to do it do Obama, they shouldn’t do it to McCain. And they shouldn’t do it, certainly, to Cindy McCain. And there shouldn’t be two different rules for Republicans and Democrats. And if they don’t think they have two different rules for Republicans and Democrats, then they’re not reading their own newspaper.

Most of the baby boomer don't have room to talk and Rudy who is a cross dress and has a boyfriend name Bernie with several woman on the side paid by taxpayers of New York. Here's a man who's children wouldn't support or vote for him when he ran for President. Records have shown Rudy used the 9/11 victims money for himself and friends while letting these fireman/police suffer and die. Today we see Law Makers not only lie and steal but we see those who like Foley molest kids with no one stopping him, hiring prositutes like Vitters who continues today and Larry Craig looking for sex in the men's room of America. Rudy once the fighter for rights sold out to the Mob and the corrupt Republican Party. Rudy is working hard on getting as much of that 800 billion dollar bailout money from Hank Paulson. Yes ready is using the smoke screen he's famous for as he attacks Obama based on lies he's robbing the taxpayer blind.

    Rudy who?

I pray he goes into retirement after the election is over and never darkens a doorway again. The very sound of his drag queen voice irks me. Sorry didn't mean to insult any drag queens out there.

    Well you did.
OK quick survey how many people here have ever done drugs?
I have. Pot and mushrooms in the 70's.

  11. spencers mom Says:

Shall we go back and look into W's drug use, too? Because it occurs to me that cocaine was an illegal drug when Georgie was indulging.

I suspect that Obama and Bush were using cocaine during the same era. The difference being, of course, that Barack was a teen while GWB was still partying hard until his forties.

And wasn't Laura Bush a pot dealer in college?

    PEACE

  12. republicans hate facts Says:

So Rudy, do you approve of George Bush's long history of substance abuse? Did that make him UNFIT to serve?

  13. Uncle Ho Says:

i go an equivalence fer ya:

Did he knock over bodegas to get his fix?

    No?

Cuz Cindy McCain robbed non-profit health care organizations for hers.

  18. barfly Says:

  24. Fred Says:

On Saturday, the New York Times published an investigative piece on Cindy McCain that delved into, among other things, her past addiction to painkillers.

This is what moved julieonly? So sad but so true. She not only was addicted but she had the monkey on her back so bad that she committed felonies to obtain the drugs just as rush did and they both got off without being punished, despite the fact that it would have been easy to prove.

    justice is for sale.

Actually quite a few who were in high school during the late 60s and 70s at least tried it.
    So what?

Just like Al Gore confessed, Yeah, I inhaled too.

  27. Fan of Man Says:

hey rudy, god forbid anyone investigate your role in/on 9-11.

  28. katy Says:

OK quick survey how many people here have ever done drugs?
I have. Pot and mushrooms in the 70’s

Yup, Pot, mushrooms, LSD and cocaine in the 80's. But really, if you have Pot there should be no need for the others. I'd have Pot more often to enjoy in my own home but some idiots made it illegal. I would grow my own but it's easier to let others take on the risk. I see California has a fine, legal Pot business going. Imagine the tax revenues if it was made legal and the cost savings from anit-pot enforcement and the new jobs created and smaller crowds in prisons and happier people, imagine all the people living life in peace!

  31. konchster Says:

  34. Zimzone Says:

Rudy & Tim Pawlenty should both be voting for Obama.

What's that? You LIKE it under the bus?

  35. pete Says:

What the Reichwhners fail to consider is the fact that, since his arrival on the national scene, Obama has faced close scrutiny and, despite changing some views based on current events, he has been consistent in his behavior. Flippy McSpin, on the other hand, has become unrecognizable to any who have followed his career.

The question that the "librul media" should be asking is: "who the Hell is this evil spirit who has taken over John McCain's body"?

  36. markusmarkus Says:

I have a confession to make to you all: I inhaled.

  37. Exit Stage Left Says:

The exile into irrelevance mustn't be easy for this fascist asswipe.

  38. livelongandprosper Says:

What the Reichwhners fail to consider is the fact that, since his arrival on the national scene, Obama has faced close scrutiny

This pisses me off as well. The right can't see this fact when they blissfully ignore requests to 'get to know Sarah Palin'.

  39. liberal traitor Says:

Bill Clinton smoked pot, he was able to be President for 8 years without any real problems...until the Rapture Right decided that an out of wedlock blowjob was the beginning of the Apocalypse.

John Baldacci smoked pot, and he's doing a pretty good job governing Maine right now.

Half my college professors smoked (and half of those still do) pot and they are still intelligent human beings with a great deal of knowledge to impart to the world.

I'm pretty sure that the founding fathers problem toked once and awhile, since hemp was pretty popular back then...I have no proof of this of course, and even if they did it wasn't the blow your mind stuff that's around today...

I smoke pot and I still manage to maintain a life, a job, and stay a well-informed citizen who beyond the civil offenses of possession, consumption, traffic tickets, and the occasional public drunkenness while in college, is still a law-abiding citizen who has never hurt anyone, nor would aside from self-defense.

Barack Obama smoked pot as a teenager, does not any longer. He became a community organizer. He became the first black President of the Harvard Law Review. He became a constitutional law professor. He became a state Senator. He became a United States Senator. He became the first black man to truly have a real shot at winning the Presidency.

And he will become America's first black President.

I only hope that he TRULY becomes the change we have so desperately needed for the last 8 years...

Exactly. If many of the people so afraid of Marijuana due to the demonization it has suffered in this country were able to actually TRY IT since it was legal...

Most people would be too lit to fight each other.
Cancer patients (among others) would have some pain relief.

Legalize it, regulate it, tax it, don't let minors smoke it (I have no problem making that concession, i.e. legal age to smoke weed is 18 like cigarettes).

Do this and watch revenues grow, violence decrease, and happiness quotients skyrocket up into Candy Unicorns on Clouds with Cute Puppies Land!

  41. krdaddy Says:

more ludicrous and insubstanative drivel from the party that
delights in alienating others and even themselves when no one
    else is available.

  42. judyinnm Says:

liberal traitor - What you said.

Got a deficit? Legalize drugs & tax the hell out of them...

Plus, give us our Constitutional Rights back that were taken away, in the name of the Wars on Drugs AND Terror.

  43. Tweedster Says:

Seriously though - there is a huuuuge difference between a young adult experimenting with drugs, and someone who steals prescription drugs from their own charity to feed their addiction.

  44. Keith Says:

Newt Gingrich said smoking pot at the time he was in grad school at Tulane was just proof you were not brain-dead.

Dubya had problems with drugs and alcohol until he was 40.

Bill Clinton being a Rhodes Scholar and Barack being #1 at Harvard Law are proof they did little or no drugs.

  45. Wayne Says:

    Keith Says:
Dubya had problems with drugs and alcohol until he was 40.

    Dubya is still a drunk.

  46. TonyC Says:

In an interview with FOX NEWS, Rudy cried about Unbalanced coverage???? ON FOX NEWS????

I think that says it all right there.

  47. misshusseinmolly Says:

Let's see -- all of one paragraph devoted to Cindy McCain's drug past and it appears in the bottom third of the article. Below all the standard puff-piece stuff about how she shops for silver trays for her husband's staffers and adopts orphans from Bangladesh.

The fact that she slept around with a married man didn't even appear in the article (but if it had, Giuliani probably would have looked quite foolish complaining about THAT).

If McCain and his team can't even stand this small amount of heat, what in the world are they doing in the kitchen?

  48. Keith Says:

Rush Limbaugh got his maid's friend to buy thousands of Oxycontin in a Denny's parking lot.

Ollie North's diary says the Contras were bringing tons of cocaine into the US. Reagan funded them illegaqlly.

Patty Reagan said her mom and dad (Ron and Nancy) smoked pot at Hollywood parties in the 1960's.

Wayne LaPierre, head of the N.R.A., lies about where he went to college to hide his drug use and left-wing politics.

  49. TRDaggett Says:

I don't recall 'Mr. 9/11' complaining [earlier] when the MSM wouldn't say a silgle bad word about Senator McCain..

BTW, doesn't Giuliani have some international rogue to assist or something? Oh that's right, if the status quo isn't continued his business will suffer.. Once the Bush&Cheney criminal enterprise are out of office the gravy train will be at risk!

Another thing, although I dislike the Conservative hypocrisy, I don't like anyone's struggle with [any] unhealthy addiction being used negatively. Many of us have fought that fight in one way or another, and know that the fight is hard enough without the incredible negative publicity.

But as usual I digress - All Giuliani and the McCain-Palin supporters have left is [verbally] throwing their feces against the media wall and hoping some of it will be repeated and some undecided (??) people will be ignorant enough to let the lies affect their vote.

  50. ElBruce Says:

I had never, never, never in my life heard of somebody getting a slap on the wrist and no jail time from the DEA themselves - until I heard about Cindy McCain's deal. That's the most egregious thing.

  51. Bozo The Neoclown Says:

psssttt, rudy, STFU you irrelevent, cross dressing freak of nature. look at the slop you're selling on some crappy cable "news" outlet.

  52. Buckie Boy Says:

Man, republicans sure don't do "Desperation" well, now do they?

This last 14 days are going to be ridiculous, they will be throwing as many lies and personal attacks as possible, not knowing that it is backfiring on them....

....which is why Powell turned on them....thanks McCriminal for the Powell endorsement, maybe you could throw a could more our way.

  53. Buckie Boy Says:

....throw a couple more our way....

    little typo there

  54. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

When is the right-wing going to learn? Journalism is nto about finding "balance", and presenting every viewpoint on an issue no matter how wrong. Journalism is about finding objective facts. It is a fact that Cindy McCain had a drug addiction problem, and even did some bad things to get them. Journalists can report that without having to dig up equally devastating dirt on someone from the other side of the political aisle.

You don't want "balance" in your journalism, you want "objectivity". Especially since people from the right-wing have such a hard time telling the truth.

    What about Cheney?

He was using one of the most deadly drugs of all: alcohol

And he SHOT a dude on it!

Too bad they don't ALL smoke cannabis. The world would be a much better place.

  57. impeachcheneythenbush Says:

As I recall, it was Obama who self-reported his drug use as a young person in one of his two books...oh yeah, and he was also upfront about his tobacco use. But quite honestly, when Bill Clinton said he'd tried pot, but never inhaled, I cracked up. Who in their right mind wouldn't have inhaled pot?

  58. DRxJ Says:

God forbid a former GOP mayor try not to distract current events by bringing up non related issues!

  59. DRxJ Says:

impeachcheneythenbush, when I was a young adult (who didn't smoke), the first couple times I "tried" pot, I did indeed inhale incorrectly, and thus "felt" nothing.
    So it is possible.
But once I learned how to inhale properly....hoo boy! Let's just say, dorm room life in college took on a whole new dimension, especially with a mixture of Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon!
    Heh!

  60. celtic cynic Says:

..."God forbid somebody would do some reporting on Barack Obama’s use of drugs..."

Yeah, God forbid somebody would do some reporting on Giuliani's and McCain's and Bush's and Gonzalez's and Rice's and Rumsfeld's and Palin's use of drugs.

There, I fixed it for you. Did I leave anyone important out?

  61. qatwoman Says:

"GIULIANI: You can’t even — you can’t even raise these issues. And, you know, God forbid somebody would do some reporting on Barack Obama’s use of drugs….
Well Rudy...you must have been hiding under a rock or had you head so far up Bushbaby's assets to not have realized that Obama admited quite some time ago about his drug use. Suprised Bushbaby didn't try that smear.....he has shown himself hypocritical enough to try something that low. But he lets his lickspittle do that dirty work!

  62. retired Says:

God forbid someone would write about McCain's repeated violation of the Uniformed Code Military Justice while on active duty. Adultery, Bigamy and Conduct Unbecoming are all federal crimes.

    livelongandprosper Says:

They can't legalize pot, the war on citizens is too profitable. It has also allowed them to increase thier swat like method of policing.

  64. Keith Says:

impeachcheneythenbush Says:when Bill Clinton said he’d tried pot, but never inhaled, I cracked up.

Clinton didn't explain it very clearly. Since he had never smoked a cigarette, he was not used to smoke and could not handle it. As soon as he inhaled the pot smoke, he coughed it out. You get no effect when you do that. The smoke must be inhaled into the lungs and held there. He did not do this. That's what he meant.

I say his excellent grades through high school, Georgetown, Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford, and Yale are proof that he did little or no drugs.

  67. jjm Says:

There should be a distinction made between someone who has been addicted to drugs -- and in a way that affected behavior (fraudulently obtaining prescriptions to feed your habit, e.g.) and someone who openly admits to having dabbled in social use without addiction or the questionable behavior it entails.

  68. Jules Says:

Rudy is a cross dresser? No wonder I didn't get the jab Obama did at the dinner.

Well lets bring up Cindy's drug stealing from her own charity..she was hooked, Obama just used it some , not addicted as Cindy was, or Bushy..........

  69. dasm Says:

Or W's use of drugs? Or Giuliani's? Or Cindy's?

  70. erikdnieto Says:

    Thufferin Thuccotash!
Get over yourself, Mr. Giuliani. You're a fading star. You're no longer "America's mayor," if you ever were.

  71. driene Says:

RUDY, RUDY!! I feel sorry for that poor man. He can't seem to get anything right. No matter what you say Rudy, you are NOT the moral compass for anyone running for office. Wasn't it you that committed adultery? Get Outta Town--now!!!

  72. Sambadaddy Says:

Should have vetted his Police Commissioner. Ghouliani doesn't realize that he has served his purpose for the Republitives. Following the 2006 mid-term massacre and the debasement of the presidency by the Bush Corporation, they needed to take the temperature of the American public. Rudy, you were the rectal thermometer. A candidate of very low character has already been selected. Go away.

  73. the Lone Voice of Reason Says:

Well there ya go, only the legal mind warping shit you can get your doctor to prescribe, ala Arizona Barbie, so we can keep the pharmaceutical companies raking in the dough is ok, right? What a non issue and what a putz. Real surprised he didn't tie it in with 9/11 again

  74. clatech Says:

The way the liberal media went after Joe Wurzelbacher is a good indication of what average Americans have to look forward to in a Barrack Obama administration (God forbid). Access will be based on positive contributions to the Obama persona and Hollywood status!
