While Claiming ‘I’m Not Bringing It Up,’ Hannity Repeatedly Brings Up Obama’s Cocaine Use

Yesterday, Rudy Giuliani echoed the McCain campaign’s attack on the media for supposedly failing to research Sen. Barack Obama’s (D-IL) youthful drug use, which he discussed in his memoir. “God forbid somebody would do some reporting on Barack Obama’s use of drugs,” Giuliani said. Minutes later, however, he claimed, “I don’t think the Time[s] should” report on Obama’s drug use.

Last night, Fox’s Sean Hannity attempted a similar sleight of hand. After condemning a Times article about Cindy McCain, Hannity suggested discussing Obama’s cocaine use would be similarly inappropriate — all the while, repeatedly discussing Obama’s cocaine use. Even Fox News contributor Bob Beckel called Hannity out on his blatant double-speak:

HANNITY: Do you think it’s fair if I brought up that I started asking you questions tonight, Barack Obama has admitted to using cocaine? Do you think we should bring up issues of where did you buy your cocaine…Did you ever sell it? Would that be fair? [...] And the only reason I was asking a question that way, Bob, is because you know what? You would say to me, Hannity, 15 days out of an election, go take a hike. You’re desperate. So I’m not bringing it up. [...]

BOB BECKEL, FOX NEWS CONTRIBUTOR: Let’s be a little careful about you saying you’re not going to bring up the cocaine issue, because you just did.

HANNITY: I’m asking if I did bring it up, is it OK? And do you think if they’re going to raise these questions about Cindy — but go ahead.

BECKEL: But you did bring it up.

Later in the segment, Fox News contributor Dick Morris declared he needed to know if Obama had “trafficked” in cocaine. Watch it:

Of course, the New York Times has run an extensive article on Obama’s use of drugs, relying on “three dozen interviews” to conclude that Obama “seemed to dabble only with marijuana.”

This is hardly the first time Hannity has sought to use this “desperate” tactic. On Oct. 5, he mentioned Obama’s admission to having “dabbled in drugs” as part of a segment on the senator’s “controversial past.” On Sept. 3, Hannity complained “nobody ever talks about” Obama’s drug use, and on Aug. 12, he asked, “Do know if he ever sold drugs?” But of course, Hannity’s “not bringing it up”; he’s merely wondering that if he did bring it up, “is it OK?”

So if I bring up the speculation that Hannity might be a child molestor, is that okay? I mean, just because he's never been convicted of molesting children doesn't mean that Sean Hannity isn't potentially a child molestor. It just means he hasn't been caught. This is all speculation, of course.

  6. bobcat_grad Says:

Is it okay if I bring up George Bush in an alcoholic and drug user?

A February 20, 2005, New York Times article about secretly taped conversations that took place during 1998 through 2000 between author Doug Wead and Bush reported that "when Mr. Wead said that Mr. Bush had in the past publicly denied using cocaine, Mr. Bush replied, 'I haven't denied anything.' " The article noted that "[t]he White House did not dispute the authenticity of the tapes or respond to their contents."

An August 19, 1999, CNN.com article reported that a Bush campaign spokeswoman said Bush "has not used illegal drugs at any time since 1974, when the 53-year-old Bush was 28." The article added: "Bush has faced persistent questions from the news media about whether he had used illegal drugs -- particularly cocaine" and that "Bush has admitted to past problems with alcohol but has not directly answered the drug question."

In her book The Family: The Real Story of the Bush Dynasty (Anchor, 2005), author Kitty Kelley quoted Sharon Bush, ex-wife of the president's brother Neil Bush, as saying that President Bush "did cocaine 'many times' at Camp David during his father's presidency," according to an October 10, 2004, review of the book in The New York Times. The Associated Post reported that Sharon Bush later denied the quote but did not seek legal action or a retraction.

  10. LibertyLover Says:

Shoot. This is such a non-issue considering that George W. Bush was a real coke-head and he's been President for 8 years. Are they now saying: "Look at what a F-up Bush has been because of his coke use?" That might just be an excuse that would work, but then, Bush would have to finally admit that he was a coke-head, now wouldn't he?

I hope President Obama and the Dem congress investigate the use of hemp as a cash crop that could dramatically improve the economy. And, no, hemp is not the stuff that gets you high. Hemp is the male cannabis plant and could be an incredible economic boon.

  17. misshusseinmolly Says:

Real journalism is stone dead, having been replaced by the question mark. A truly useful punctuation mark, the question mark absolves the user of all responsibility for responsible reporting.

Fox has perfected "question mark" journalism, making their reporting look pretty much like this:

Why doesn't anyone report on Obama's extensive history of drug use?
Why can't we find out if Obama was a cocaine dealer?
How much of Obama's drug past is he hiding?
    etc., etc.

  18. misshusseinmolly Says:

Hannity is desperately attempting to compare Obama's drug experimentation in HIGH SCHOOL with Cindy McCain's full-blown drug addiction AS AN ADULT. And there's no evidence to suggest that Obama ever stole to score his drugs.

This is just more desperate flailing by the water carriers. They are trying to ignore the fact that most voters care more about economic conditions today than they care whether or not Obama smoked a couple of joints in high school.

Didn't Palin make a big deal about "looking backward"? So why is Hannity doing just that?

  19. tokin librul Says:

Friendz, the allegations of Obama's drug use are not meant to dissuade you from supporting him.

The allegations are meant to get into the media, where they will be repeated endlessly to the Palinolithic crowd, the one's who heard about ACORN 5 minutes before the rally.

And they will be used by 'undecideds' to rationalize their 'decision' NOT to vote for the black druggie/terrorist/muslim...

Will Hannity be able to swim long and hard enough
to ever break through to the surface again?

  23. Tired of being lied to Says:

Would it be fair if we asked why Hannity is such a jerk? Did Hannity ever snort? Take a toke? Pop a pill? I'm not saying he did, or does now, or probably will in the future, but he does have a big ego and a lot of money and we all know that people with big egos and a lot of money typically do drugs and cheat on their taxes, too. But how would we ever know if we don't ask these questions or launch an indepth probe? Would that be fair if we didn't?

But I'm not going to bring any of these things up. Because I'm above all that.

  24. DidHeJustSayThat Says:

    This

How about Palin's drunken abuse and addiction to wacky religion? She is operating in her own bizarre universe....needs help, but won't admit it.

  31. impeachcheneythenbush Says:

Hannity is an ex-construction worker, ex-bartender and a college dropout. He holds dual citizenship (U.S. and Ireland). He first went on the air in 1989. He was born the same year as Obama, whose resume reads quite differently, does not hold dual citizenship (U.S. only) also happens to be black and is probably going to be the next President of the United States. I think Hannity's vileness is based on personal jealousy as much as his idealogical tilt.

  32. Buckie Boy Says:

Repukes are like little monkeys flinging their poo at the audience, just hoping something, anything will stick.

Obama voters aren't buying it, Obama is going to win in a landslide.

  34. Angry McAngus Says:

Hannity has never denied molesting children. In fact, he's never talked about it. What is he trying to hide? Why won't you come clean, Mr. Hannity?

  38. CageyCretin Says:

Is it o.k. for me to inquire as to what specific favors McCain was granted while a POW for his assistance in torturing the other prisoners? Or to simply wonder how many VC prostitutes he was granted access to for divulging strategic information? What "pain killers" was McCain given by his captors for each propaganda film he did for them? How long was he hooked on those drugs? I'm not accusing, I'm just asking if it's o.k. to ask these things?

  39. tombaker Says:

  42. superid Says:

  43. 5th Estate Says:

misshusseinmolly #17: I think you could call it "questionable journalism".

The specious questioning is also part of the MCCain/GOP strategy of painting Obama as "other" by constantly asking "Who is Obama?".
That Republican orifice on The View, Hasselbeck, for example, has been parroting this meme for weeks, at every opportunity.
McCain and Palin have posed the question to their rallies.

They keep asking the question but they refuse to acknowledge the answers that have been provided by both Obama and press investigations over the past TWO effing years!.

It is all the more bizarre when we pose the corollary question, "who is John McCain?"

For at least eight years the McCain everyone 'knew' was the 'war-hero' and the political 'maverick' with a 'bipartisan' streak. That is what the public and especially the press chose to believe, without question. . Had McCain never run for the White House that's what the majority would probably still believe about him.

Ironically I'd say his 2000 effort helped maintain the facile acceptance of his claimed qualities due to the vicious nature of the Bush/Rove counter-campaign against McCain, which earned him enough sympathy to kibosh any further questioning of his character or principles.

Only now, as the official GOP candidate for president has the press bothered to examine him in depth, and thanks to the unusually protracted "season" and his early (compared to the Dems) emergence as the presumptive GOP nominee the press and the public has come to re-learn what they 'knew' about John McCain and have arrived at a very different estimation of him than before---an estimation based on research, not assumptions and blind acceptance of McCain's own propaganda.

Furthermore the manner in which McCain's campaign has been run has revealed far more about him than a dispassionate or even a partisan examination of his official record ever could.

In stark contrast Obama's record offers very little that is inconsistent with his persona and his own 'propoganda' whilst his personal conduct and that of his campaign as a whole has only enhanced his image, not diminished it.

I was one who was very concerned about Obama's professional political experience (but not his personal qualities) but it has become clear to me that his intelligence has largely transcended the conventional requirements for political success. Obama is clearly as genuine and principled a politician and a person as you could hope for. McCain on the other hand has shown himself to be the complete opposite--not, I would add, as professionally corrupt as so many of his GOP colleagues ( Ted Stevens, Tom Delay, Duke Cunningham for example), but rather corrupt in himself as a self-serving incompetent who believes his own hype.

We now know who John McCain is, and we know who Obama is and it looks like the majority knows who they would rather have as a resident in "the people's house".

But John McCain and his ardent supporters know nothing except their own fantasy that they know who they are ("real Americans") whilst they still insist that no-one really 'knows' who Obama is.

Funny how McCain constantly says "my friends" whereas I can;t think of any occasion where Obama has used that expression, yet Obama seems to have a lot more genuine 'friends' than McCain.

  44. 49erDem Says:

Republicans. They've proven themselves to be bad winners and now they're proving to be even worse losers. In fact, they're such bad losers that their "movement" is pretty much over.

  45. LibertyLover Says:

Heh. The republican talking heads are so frustrated that Barak Obama is as tephlony as Ronnie Reagan used to be... nothing that they throw at him seems to stick. I guess Obama is either that clean and open or just so hopeful that Americans are just tired about all the mud the talking heads like to throw.

  46. Progressive Veteran Says:

  53. prettybabe Says:

People like Morris, Guliani and Hannity are not aware of the biblical proverb: "Let he without sin cast the first stone." Morris is an adulterer. Ten Commandment violation. Guliani married a cousin, had an affair that his wife learned about in press conference, made his fortune off 7/11, children not speaking to him. A passel of Commandment violations. Fast lip Hannity is going to have a heart attack on TV or radio if he does not find a scandal large enough to bring down Barack Obama. Like all conservative haters on radio, their hate for Obama is personal. It has nothing to do with his politics. It's beyond him being a Democrat. Obama represents a loss of power for the all-white male control in the u.s. This is a fearful prospect for those white Americans who cannot except change, which will eventually come to pass whether it's through Obama or another minority. Though none of these haters will ever admit it, they actually envy Obama for achieving what they can only dream about. If you listen to any of them, they have all said this on air: "If I was president ...", or "If I was a senator..." And then they try to advise candidates on how to run their campaigns. Rush Limbaugh thought he could initiate a write-in to get his name of the Nobel Peace Prize list! He felt he deserved to win. For someone who's brain is on loan from God--God apparently shortchanged him, and didn't bother to tell him.

Dumb Question: Why was it OK and in the past when Bush repeatedly (and against the law) got high but not OK that Clinton tried marijuana - and only in a country where it was legal ?

Why was it OK for Bush in college (because it was in the past) but not OK (and not in the past) for Obama in High School ?

Why is it OK for Cindy Brady in the current but not OK for Obama in the past ?

OK, sorry about that one. Even Hannity wouldn't ask that question. He'd just ask if it was fair to ask that question.
