Rep. Hayes Lies: I Never Said ‘Liberals Hate Real Americans’

hayes4234.gif On Saturday, Republican North Carolina Reps. Patrick McHenry and Robin Hayes warmed up the crowd at a rally for Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) by throwing red meat to the right-wing audience. As ThinkProgress noted, the New York Observer’s Jason Horowitz reported that Hayes “accused Obama of ‘inciting class warfare’ and said that ‘liberals hate real Americans that work and achieve and believe in God.’”

Yesterday, the Politico’s Ryan Grim contacted Hayes’s spokeswoman, Amanda Little, who said that the congressman denied making the comments:

Hayes spokeswoman, Amanda Little, says that Hayes absolutely denies making the comments that appear in the Observer article. She noted that other national reporters were at the event and didn’t pick up on what the Observer reported. [...]

Hayes spokeswoman Little is still denying it and accuses The Crypt of “irresponsible journalism.”

Horowitz stood behind his story, saying that the reason most national reporters didn’t cover the remarks is because they weren’t there; the national media’s plane hadn’t yet arrived. “I wasn’t on the plane,” explained Horowitz. “I don’t know if they were aware the national press wasn’t there, but they were staying stuff.”

Audio of the event recorded by Lisa Miller of WFAE in Charlotte, NC now definitively shows that Hayes has been lying about not saying that “liberals hate real Americans.” Here are his exact comments:

Sarah Palin — she’s a lady that can get ‘er done. She’s been in Alaska. She got ‘er did! Folks, there’s a real America, and liberals hate real Americans that work, and accomplish, and achieve, and believe in God. That’s a great comparison.

Listen here:

In 2006, Hayes said, “Stability in Iraq ultimately depends on spreading the message of Jesus Christ, the message of peace on earth, good will towards men.” As recently as 2005, he was still insisting that there was a link between Saddam Hussein and 9/11.

Update In the face of the audio, Hayes is now admitting that he did make the comments: "I genuinely did not recall making the statement and, after reading it, there is no doubt that it came out completely the wrong way. I actually was trying to work to keep the crowd as respectful as possible, so this is definitely not what I intended."

The thing that’s really, really burning their fat white asses is that NC is turning blue!

Hayes & Henry may even find themselves out of work, come ‘09…wouldn’t that be sweet.

misshusseinmolly, what’s the scoop on these Rep. races down there? Hopefully, it will swing Dem, just like MN is hoping with Bachmann.

TP, Bachmann’s opponent has $850,000+ in donations in less than 72 hours!

I don’t know which disgusts me more; the original venal smear, the approval of the crowd, the lie, Hayes own stupidity or the assumed stupidity of the rest of us (the majority, I would add). .

Come to think of it, even the morons in the crowd should be insulted that Hayes just refused to acknowledge their support and approval.

I am a liberal. I served honorably in the US Army. I worked honorably over thirty years for DoD. I love my country and hate demagoguery! That so-called Christian and North Carolina Representative has borne false witness against me and many, many others.

These phoney Christians are beyond contempt!

  17. CageyCretin says:

well, it is official: the Republicans will use every day from now until election day to build fear and hatred. All they have left is divisiveness, and they are not even trying to assimilate any new members — they just want to incite thier base. Not one to normally tow too much of a conspiracy theory, but it would not matter what particular group of people instigate mass riots and violence in the streets in order for ChimpyCheney to “justify” martial law. So, if they get the base so inflammed that when “that damn n#$$%r” wins and the base goes a riotin’ that’s good enough. On that note I did overhear limbaugh recently lament, in violent terms, “When is it OUR turn to riot?” And talk radio the other day here in the midwest had a long (and historically accurate) discussion on the emergency powers/martial law of Lincoln. IF there’s consipracy and plots brewing (and with THESE criminals, it is very possible — they have the power, and it might be naiive to imagine that they will willingly let it go just on the will of “the people”), just winning an election is not going to end it. Just sayin’.

    __________________________________________________________

Robin Hayes appears to be neck and neck with Kissell (his Democratic opponent). Hayes’ district is heavily Republican, but there are a lot of new voters registered this year, thanks to the Obama-Clinton primary, and they may have an effect even in the heavily GOP western part of the state.

I can’t get current information on how Patrick McHenry is really doing against his Democratic opponent. Last summer, McHenry was ahead of opponent Daniel Johnson, but not by all that much.

  20. CageyCretin says:

    Guido the Loving OBGYN Says:
The real problem here is Republicans are terrified of Liberals who work hard, and assemble.

Isn’t it more accurate to say that the Republicans are terrified of anyone who does not believe exactly what they believe? In other words, the modern Republicans are strictly “you’re with us or against us” and there is no other ground — you are Republican, or you are a feared and hated enemy. Period.

  21. Perry logan says:

    Dear President Obama,

Please declare martial law and arrest all Republicans. Just a suggestion.

  22. cha cha cha says:

  25. CageyCretin says:

    Perry logan Says:

    Dear President Obama,

Please declare martial law and arrest all Republicans. Just a suggestion.

Now that is just not right. Arresting anyone simply on basis of party is an act INJUSTICE, and an attempt to suppress differing thought. People can think what they want, and they can act as they please, as long as their actions do not harm other people (this axiom is the basis of all socieies laws, and of all systems of moral thought). Anyone asking for martial law in a democracy is anti-democracy. Martial law should not ever be an option in a democratic republic — because when enacted at the federal level it denies the republic itself. The ONLY instance of it being acceptable is when the republic is threatened by the martial acts of states (as occurred in the Civil War). Any other use of it is a complete abuse of power that is hateful to democracy, freedom and the republic.

  26. SkepticRising says:

It never ceases to amaze me when Republicans (or Dems for that matter, though it seems much less frequent) simply deny comments that are on tape. It’s like all they have to do is claim it isn’t so and that’s all there is to it. What diabolical logic must permeate their calcified brains that causes them to conclude this can work? Who are they going to convince?

  27. bob hussein lablah says:

    Next quote?

I never said “I never said ‘Liberals hate Real Americans.’”

  28. shoeless says:

I hate those Americans who are born to the families of uber-rich textile magnates, inherit vast sums of money, use that money and power to get elected to public office in order to legislate massive tax cuts for themselves, while pretending that they are just good ol’ downhome hard working folk.

What did McHenry do, tell amusing anecdotes about his involvement with gay hustlers and murder? Or maybe his insulting of our troops in Iraq? I have no issues with sexual orientation except for swine like this pink pear, who punish their own community for political gain.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. I call upon public officials, educators, librarians, parents, students, and all Americans to observe this week with appropriate ceremonies, activities, and programs.

I guess hate speech builds character…
