In an interview with a local CBS affiliate in St. Louis, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) criticized Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) for running ads “that are absolutely false about my positions on the issues.” McCain then made a specific reference to his position on stem cell research:
MCCAIN: The quote, tone of the campaign has been tough. Its been hard. Senator Obama is running four ads right now that are absolutely false about my positions on the issues.
Q: Which ones?
MCCAIN: On immigration, on health care, on stem cell research – and the other one I can’t uhh – they’re absolutely false. He says I do not support funding for stem cell research. I do. I mean, thats flat out wrong.
Of course, McCain did not specify what kind of stem cell research he supports. In fact, according to his campaign website, a McCain-Palin administration would only support funding for adult stem cell research and scientific studies that do “not involve the use of human embryos“:
As president, John McCain will strongly support funding for promising research programs, including amniotic fluid and adult stem cell research and other types of scientific study that do not involve the use of human embryos.
Since McCain began his run for president, he has been forced to do a political dance on the stem cell issue. He praised embryonic stem cell research in April 2007 but last September, while he claimed to support funding the practice, he added that “clear lines should be drawn that reflect a refusal to sacrifice moral values and ethical principles for the sake of scientific progress.”
But his current stance posted on his website makes clear that a McCain-Palin administration would not fund embryonic stem cell research — a position from a self-described “maverick” that happens to mirror the 2008 GOP platform.
should we perhaps use “he doesn’t remember” as the reason for all of his flips and mistakes and gaffes and jokes and lies?
October 21st, 2008 at 4:44 pmit would explain a lot to the idiots that know what old and tired look like?
I missed the part of the post that has something to do with the title. Where does McCain say he supports embryonic stem cell research?
October 21st, 2008 at 4:45 pmSen. McCain supports funding for stem cell research conceptually, it’s a psychological thing!

October 21st, 2008 at 4:54 pmRandomChaos,
It is flat out wrong to say that he is opposed to stem cell research. While he is opposed to one particular kind of stem cell research, it would be flat out wrong to say that he is opposed to all stem cell research.
I’m not trying to defend McCain here. I’m trying to help TP see when they are being the left version of redstate.com.
October 21st, 2008 at 4:56 pmThere’s no need to get upset over this one. Tommorrow he’ll either actively deny ever saying it, or someone from the campaign will jump up and deny that McWorse speaks for the campaign, or that his remarks were taken out of context. I’m just waiting till someone shows him saying it on videotape and his snappy rejoinder will be, Who you gonna believe, me or your lying eyes?
October 21st, 2008 at 5:05 pmImpeach Pelosi, Cheney and Bush and Save the Constitution!
Alejandro is correct on this one
October 21st, 2008 at 5:18 pmTypical Ministry Of Information type stuff from the McCain campaign. Just like the Troopergate report that totally absolved Palin by saying she broke the law.
October 21st, 2008 at 5:23 pmHe is to old to remember how he stands, he says he loves the Vets but either votes no or just does not bother to show up and vote, he is just to damn old and that`s coming from my 73 year mom who is a die hard republican and she say`s Palin is as dumb as a bag of rocks and will vote for Obama because he is right on the issues for America.
October 21st, 2008 at 5:34 pmTP is wrong on this one. There is enough McCain flips that
October 21st, 2008 at 5:35 pmthis is unnecessary. He has flipped on immigration from
supporting some sort of reform with Ted K. ,but now
says he wouldn’t vote for it.
Alejandro,
October 21st, 2008 at 5:42 pmYou are correct, my apologies. I thought the Ad itself stated he did not support Embryonic Stem Cell Research.
Hey a-holes! Stop trying to stick up for the old bastard. If he doesn’t support embryonic stem cell research, he doesn’t support the most promising avenue towards cures for a variety of diseases. Just because the old crackpot is spewing out bullshit about “adult stem cell” research doesn’t change the fact that he and his republican religious fanatic friends have been standing in the way of medical research.
October 21st, 2008 at 5:42 pmMcCain is being disingenuous. He trying to obscure the issue by generalizing stem cell research. A lie by omission is still a lie.

October 21st, 2008 at 5:45 pmI don’t think anyone is sticking up for him. I think they are just (oops almost used the word that may not be used) acknowledging the literal wording.
McCain still supported funding for embryonic stem cell research as late as January, 08. He changed his position to get support from religious fanatics.
From the Washington Post, in January of this year: “Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), who is running for the Republican presidential nomination, on Thursday while campaigning in Florida said he continues to support human embryonic stem cell research, the Washington Post reports. When asked whether recent advances in nonembryonic stem cell research would change his stance, McCain replied, “I have not changed my position yet” (Milbank, Washington Post, 1/25).”
October 21st, 2008 at 5:47 pmI’m just pointing out that this is simply another issue on which McCain has flipped out of political necessity and opportunism. The list is long.
October 21st, 2008 at 5:48 pmand I believe we would all agree on that but I think the point was what does the information say and not say in the post
October 21st, 2008 at 5:50 pmSorry Grandpa McCain,
but in today’s controversy, if you just say stem-cell without qualification, everyone thinks of embrionicaly derived stem cells. That is the clear implication.
October 21st, 2008 at 5:52 pm#5, LividLib says: He looks really old!
And that’s his good side.
