In July, Robert Lichter, the president of the Center for Media and Public Affairs, released a study showing that ABC, NBC, and CBS had been tougher on Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) than Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) during June and July. At the time, ThinkProgress noted how Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly — who had previously praised Lichter’s work — criticized the study on his radio show, claiming that it “gives the bad guys in the media…protection.”
On Sunday, in a column on the “alleged bias” that readers routinely accuse the New York Times of injecting into their news coverage, Public Editor Clark Hoyt mentioned O’Reilly’s criticism of Lichter :
Lichter got a taste of what it feels like in July. He released a study concluding that Obama was faring worse than McCain on television news. Bill O’Reilly of Fox News, who had previously praised Lichter’s work as proving that the media was liberal, was incensed and rejected the study. “A study like yours gives the bad guys in the media — and they are legion now — protection,” O’Reilly said.
On his show last night, O’Reilly lambasted Hoyt for mentioning the episode. O’Reilly took particular umbrage over the fact that Hoyt likely “got his information” from ThinkProgress, which O’Reilly called “a far left website.” O’Reilly claimed it “was blatantly dishonest” to use ThinkProgress as “a primary source” without telling his readers. Watch it:
O’Reilly claims that it’s “dishonest” and “corrupt” for Hoyt to use information from ThinkProgress, but this ignores the fact that ThinkProgress simply reported O’Reilly’s own words and provided the audio. O’Reilly also claimed that his objection to Lichter’s study was “based on the method used.” However, as Lichter noted in July, he used the same methods that he had used when he published results that O’Reilly praised:
LICHTER: Well, I think the answer to that is: You can take all my studies or none of my studies. If you use a study, then you admit that the study is valid, and so if you say Obama’s getting bad press, we can quote this study. The same study, the same technique showed he was getting very good press before. And we’re going to be doing this all the way up to the election.
O’Reilly is right about one thing though. Hoyt should cite ThinkProgress if he’s using our information – there’s nothing to be ashamed about in using this “far left website” as a source.
It’s worth mentioning that the study isn’t a fair comparison. In June and July, the Democratic primary was still in full swing, whereas McCain was largely off the media radar, having won his primary earlier. So of course a lot more tough questions and vetting were being directed at Obama. They were also directed at his opponent at the time, Hillary Clinton.
Just sayin’.
October 21st, 2008 at 2:51 pmWhere’s my media bias, M-F’ers?
October 21st, 2008 at 2:51 pmPoor Bill should we all go to drudge or redstate? We know
October 21st, 2008 at 2:51 pmthat they would never put out BS. HAAAAA!
Reinstate the fairness doctrine, and O’Reilly will be out of a job in less than a month.
October 21st, 2008 at 2:57 pmO’Reilly is correct that O’Reilly is “dishonest” and “corrupt”
Nuff said.
October 21st, 2008 at 3:01 pm“a far left website.”
Just curious, but has O’Reilly ever identified who he thinks are members of the “far right”? Or has he ever even used the phrase “far right”? I don’t watch his show, but “far left” seems to come out of his mouth every other sentence, but I’ve yet to hear “far right”.
October 21st, 2008 at 3:03 pmif TP’s far left, i’m bill maher.
October 21st, 2008 at 3:03 pm.
Dear Bill-Doh O’Liely,
Why is it that the “FAR LEFT” is corrupt but your Reich Wing sybndicated program isn’t? I mean, SHUT UP! F’ IT! F’IT! We’ll do this thing in the morning… F’IT!!!!
.
October 21st, 2008 at 3:03 pm.
I told Bill-Doh…
… Don’t Be A Sucker.
Obviously, he refused to listen and became that sucker.
.
October 21st, 2008 at 3:07 pmDoes this mean that O’Falafel actually (a) knows how to use a computer, and (b) logs into TP at least sometimes?
Wow — if so: HEY BILL-O: STUFF IT, PAL. Now go away, or we shall taunt you a second time…
October 21st, 2008 at 3:08 pmHmmmm, Bildo reads TP.
Any guesses as to how he identifies himself?
John Kerry?
Mr. P?
Tracy_5?
Daryl?
I’m going with JK; that guy is out to lunch, & so is Bildo.
October 21st, 2008 at 3:08 pm… and believe me, Bill O’Reilly knows all about ‘blatantly dishonest’!
snark off.
October 21st, 2008 at 3:11 pmWOW, We’re the scary “FAR LEFT”…oooooohhh, ooooooohhh, I guess Bildo falafel pervert will be labeling us as “Un-American” very soon…
….oh, wait they are ready are doing that.
When a ReichWinger says you’re “Un-American” you can be proud of that…because it means just the opposite.
October 21st, 2008 at 3:13 pmI love this site, and I think I am more a moderate than anything else. Bill regularly slams other progressive sites, too. If you don’t think as he thinks, then you are wicked.
October 21st, 2008 at 3:14 pmLook, here’s how it is:
Anyone who disagrees with Bildo=Far Left
Anyone who would vote for Obama=Far Left
Anyone who thinks Iraq was a bad idea=Far Left
Anyone who thinks Powell endorsed Obama because of something other than race=Far Left
Anyone who reports Bildo’s own words to the public=Far Left
Anyone who questions the Bush Admin.=Far Left
Anyone who thinks we’re in a recession=Far Left
Anyone who thinks Impeachment isn’t just for blow jobs=Far Left
Anyone who thinks $700b to corporate fatcats is immoral and unjust=Far Left
Anyone who questions Sarah Palin’s experience=Far Left (but question Obama’s and you’re just being ‘reasonable’)
Anyone who thinks shouting “kill him” at political rallies is disgusting=Far Left
Anyone who thinks not stopping aforementioned shouts=Far Left
Anyone who uses an elitist word like “aforementioned”=Far Left
Couple all that with Bachmann’s The-Far-Left-is-Anti-America-They-have-Anti-American-views-they-are-leftist-liberal-traitors and you’ve got yourself one hell of a nightmare.

McCain is saying he was “tested” during the 1963 Cuban Missile Crisis, because he was on an aircraft carrier in the area.
October 21st, 2008 at 3:15 pmBill O’Reilly would have a stronger argument if he would treat the ThinkProgress source the way we treat wingnut links posted here by the trolls. Yes, we occasionally tell the trolls that their silly links to raving loony sites have no credibility here and make no further comment, but more often we discredit the link by pointing out why it’s wrong (just because it’s usually pretty easy to do, and it shuts them up).
Bill appears to be employing the former strategy of claiming that TP has no validity as a source. But if he went with the latter and rebutted the actual information in that source, he’d have a more credible argument.
Oh, that’s right — he CAN’T rebut the information. It’s his own words. Oh well…
October 21st, 2008 at 3:15 pmSo, am I to guess, according to the neocons, any and all organizations that simply state the real facts and present factual proof are far left?
October 21st, 2008 at 3:17 pm“a far left website.”
Is that you Trajan?
October 21st, 2008 at 3:24 pmThe Republicans have been buying power courtesy of big business for decades. Now that the people are coughing up money to get their country back the right wingers are crying like babies. This will not be over after the election. Obama and the congress need to know we’re paying attention and we want changes. The Fairness Doctrine needs to come back in some form and the news needs to be basically factual instead of lies and propaganda.
October 21st, 2008 at 3:28 pmKrazny @#17
Then I’m qualified to be a Senator, cause I took a tour of the Capitol building in 1961 when my family visited there.
October 21st, 2008 at 3:30 pmGod! I love the sound of O’Reilly whining! It means we’re getting under his dermal layer and itching/irritating/inflaming it. Goody.

__________________________________________________________
I realize this is somewhat off-topic, but I read the P-I article in your link and was amazed.
McCain says, “I sat in the cockpit, on the flight deck of the USS Enterprise, off of Cuba. I had a target.”
In other words, he wasn’t a decision-maker during this “test”. He was operating under specific orders that came from others who were making the decisions. This hardly counts as decision-making experience.
Does he understand that sitting in the Oval Office during a crisis isn’t like sitting in a cockpit awaiting orders? I suspect McCain isn’t that stupid, and he certainly does know the difference. However, he believes his audience really IS stupid, will somehow make some sort of “heroism” connection, and conflate a Navy pilot following orders with a president giving them.
October 21st, 2008 at 3:34 pmIsn’t Bill Orally the guy who tried having phone sex with a co-worker? What does it matter what he thinks?
October 21st, 2008 at 3:34 pmO’Liely says the same thing about other “far left” sources like Media Matters. And he simply ignores the fact Media Matters is simply reporting what O’Liely and others say and they always provide the full context, transcript + audio and video
October 21st, 2008 at 3:35 pmCrap. Billo would say that it was dishonest to use a tape recording of his own words.
*eyeroll*
October 21st, 2008 at 3:35 pmOT, Looks like McCain Capaign sent a letter to the Russian Embassy requesting a campaign donation, more than the legal amount.
McCain asked for $5,000.
Individual donations to candidates’ election campaigns are capped by law at $2,300, and it is illegal to accept donations from foreign nationals.

I would love to see Bill get his ass kicked; probably more so than any human being on earth. He is so insecure that it is tough to think that he is serious; I would like to think he is kidding. This guys has some serious problems.

lol Looks like the Falafel King is giving TP free advertisement on air. I don’t take anything that Bill-O seriously with a grain of salt. Pass the popcorn please.
October 21st, 2008 at 3:41 pmLuckily, O’lielly’s target audience is quickly dying out as the “greatest generation” passes over into their eternal reward.
October 21st, 2008 at 3:47 pmMissHMolly @#24 ~ Do you get the feeling that McIIIrd is maybe trying to drum up some business for the John Hero McMaverick action figures after he gets trounced Nov 4th>?

What do you think would happen if we and all “far left” media outlets started screaming that the far right people and media outlets were anit-American?
Lets start here. Anyone that watches FOX News is far right and anti-American. Anyone that believes in open-ended war, based on lies, for profit is far right and anti-American. Anyone that accuses another of being anti-American because they don’t agree with their twisted mindset and warped values just so they can feel more righteous is far right and anti-American. Anyone that believes George Bush, Dick(head) Cheney, Karl Rove, Condoleezza Rice, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Michael Savage, Michael Reagan, Jean Schmidt, Sarah Palin, I. “Scooter” Libby, Matt Drudge, Rupert Murdoch, Bill O’Reilly, Michele Bachmann, Glenn Beck, Bill Kristol, Joe Lieberman, Patrick McHenry, Robin Hayes, et al, are good and pro-American are far right and anti-American.
These far right, anti-American people have on numerous occasions shown their disdain for the constitution and the bill of rights and civil liberties. How does that make them pro-American?
October 21st, 2008 at 3:51 pmWayne! Great pick up! Now we know he’s desperate, but come on, Palin can see Putin rear his ugly head from her backyard!
October 21st, 2008 at 3:51 pmWhy doesn’t he just drop it off in her mailbox?
Correction: first sentence, anti instead of “anit.” Oh hell, they’re each a nit too!
October 21st, 2008 at 3:53 pmOops! “vice”=nice
October 21st, 2008 at 3:59 pmNow, now. It’s not vice to make fun of the developmentally challenged. One must remember that Bill0 calls Media Matters a “far-left hate site” because they commit the unforgivable sin of repeating what he says WORD FOR WORD. He wouldn’t recognize the truth if it did nasty things to his Southern orifice.

And just the same, I was tested because I was conceived at that time, too! So there you have it, Sarah’s can see Russia from her back yard and therefor is qualified on foreign relations and Johnny was at sea, somewhere and therefor was tested to handle a crisis. I keep saying, with these nutz, I’m the next energy Czar because my farts qualify me on natural gas and I was being conceived in 1963 and therefor I’ve been tested to handle a crisis, too!!!

Revealing the ugly side of Sydney?s binge drinking epidemic
02 Dec 08 @ 07:21am by Paul Tatnell
This atrticle contained passages the I felt slammed the original inhabitants of Australia.
The following quote was from some racist doctor.
Rolf Harris says, (BUT MBSPRINGER DOES NOT!)
Aboriginal children were never disciplined or expected to adhere to rules until adulthood, he said.
??(Until) then they have a totally carefree life to do what they want and that quite often involves smashing everything that they have.??
I was very upset at reading HIS words so I responded very critically.

ROLF HARRIS SAYS SORRY FOR RACIST SONG LYRICS?THEN GOES ON TO SLAM ?LAZY? ABORIGINES
?You sit at home watching the television and you think to yourself,
?Get up off your arse and clean up the streets your bloody self? and why would you expect somebody to come in and clean up your garbage, which you?ve dumped everywhere?
?But then you have to think that it?s a different attitude to life.?
He said Aboriginal children were never disciplined or expected to adhere to rules until adulthood.
?Till then, they have a totally carefree life to do what they want and that quite often involves smashing everything that they have,? he told The Age newspaper. Mr Harris blamed Aboriginal traditional values for the appalling conditions in many communities.
