I just let the algae flourish and rip out a few hands-full a week. I haven't done a water change in that time, except when cleaning the filters. The fish have never done better and I still have zero nitrates! Though, to be fair, it's not a "true reef tank". I have home-grown live rock, courtesy of a friends quarry, that I seeded with rubble my favorite store couldn't sell. I figure, rather than buying hideously expensive live-rock which mostly dies off, I just have the stuff that will thrive in my system.
